I've lived in huge cities with a plethora of really good Asian food. I'm not a native of Corpus Christi and I didn't know what to expect coming here for my short term stay, but damn. You guys have a food Asian place and this is it. The portions are HUGE! What I've ate: *There's reallllly good bibimbap here (even though it has regular spinach and not the traditional Sigeumchi-namul and missing a few of the other traditional toppings). It's also huge. They give you the gochujang (red pepper sauce), but I also add the ginger sauce. *Damn, the japchae is really flavorful. I got it as a side and it's as big as my regular rice bowl. There is also an option to order it as your main course. The noodles aren't as chewy as I usually like them, but I ate them piping hot since I was so hungry. It'll probably get chewier as it cools. *Ginger sauce. You get it on the cart by the wall. It is SOOO good. I love this stuff. It has my A+ rating. It goes well with the bibimbap, onion pancake, spam mitsubi, etc. This is easily two meals for me. I can't wait to try the other items. Also, they had a great lady working the front counter. I was skeptical about this place because it is marketed as "Asian fusion" and when I saw 5+ different countries on their menu, my skepticism only grew. I think we can all agree that Z Counter is not authentic. It may have the flies and look of a C health-rating establishment that would make it authentic, but it's just because the workers don't clean well. My fish fried rice had some type of breaded fried fish in it and tasted sweet--not at all like how it's supposed to taste. And the deep fried pancake wrapped ground meat thing was confusing but it was good. Everything seemed to be overly sweetened and I guess that's why diabetes is an issue here. read more

My family has lived in corpus for two years and I'm so sad that we just gave Z Counter a try... I wish we found them sooner! Their food is fresh, delicious, convenient, and reasonably priced. The environment is very casual, a great lunch spot for a day date or friend date. I've tried their egg rolls (amazing!), their ramen bowl with chicken (will be my go-to) and their counter donuts. This is hands down one of the best Asian spots I've been to in my life. I couldn't wait to take a photo and had to dig in. The luxury bowl is the best fried rice combo in existence. Sesame tots were so yummy. I'd definitely recommend this as a sweet appetizer! The mac has minimal cheese, seems like they just sprinkled some shredded on top. Very strong garlic flavor. But a huge serving, so it should be shared. The tots should probably be shared also, but they were easily devoured. Thankfully, I didn't witness any of the critters mentioned in other reviews. My roommate and I went to this restaurant on a whim and ended up finding a gem! The restaurant here is pretty small but the food is absolutely delicious. We got the basil fried rice with chicken and plum lou mein (I think) with chicken as well. They turned out to be mouth watering and I would get it again 100%. The mint lemonade is a MUST HAVE. Let's get down to business. If you told me that this place was in Corpus Christi before I visited, I would have called you a liar and walked away. No offense to CC residents at all, but when I think of Corpus, I think of seafood and pizza. Z Counter completely turned me on my head. This place is out of this world good. Thank you Corpus for allowing me to be green with envy that I would not be able to eat here on the regular. I was scouring Yelp for some unique places to eat in Corpus during a recent business trip. What sold me was the Miso Mac & Cheese and I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked into Z Counter. The cashier was incredibly friendly and gave great recommendations when I told her I wasn't sure what to order. I came in right before closing time and while I felt bad an apologized (I thought I misplaced my wallet and spent close to an hour searching for it) both the cashier and cook reassured me they appreciated my business. Upon recommendation, I went with the Green Onion Pancake Wrap with Bulgogi (!!!!) Beef and a side of the infamous (seriously) Miso Mac & Cheese. The wrap was heaven in bite size form. The sauce that comes with it, is a perfect balance of sweet and tang. I also had some of their house ginger sauce which was equally as tasty. The bulgogi was some of the best I've ever had. I was worried the pancake would be too heavy, but it was more like a crepe and leant itself to the flavor of the entire warp harmoniously. The biggest problem I have with mac & cheese is that it tends to be just noodles and cheese, no matter how many cheeses you add to it or topping you put on top. The miso takes this mac to another level completely. It's unlike miso soup and gives the mac a whole other dimension completely. Not to mention, it was a great reheat when I was a little hungry after a few late night beers. I loved Z Counter and may make the drive down to Corpus to satisfy my craving! Oh, Z Counter, WHY oh WHY are you so far from my home?? WHAT can I do to convince you to move??? We were at the Beach for our anniversary and was looking for something to eat before heading home. We started perusing seafood restaurants, but nothing jumped out at us, so we decided to expand our selections... one of THE BEST things we did that day!! Yelpers had reviewed Z Counter and posted some pics of some AMAZING LOOKING FOOD, so we abandoned our thought of seafood and headed over. Let me first tell you that this delicious gem is in the middle of a strip mall. Now, some people may turn their noses up at that, but I couldn't care less where the restaurant is! And, there are a huge amount of great eateries that are in strip malls. Well, we were overwhelmed and at a loss of words by the picture menu on the wall. THANK YOU MENU GODS!! It is so nice to actually see what you may order when you have no idea what it is! From the pictures on Yelp, I had already decided on the Thai basil fried rice with Chinese sausage and kimchi and fried egg. The Hubster, however, had two entrees he wanted. Since everything there is so affordable, we decided on three different items... the Thai basil fried rice, the Bulgogi and The Deluxe Green Onion Pancake. HOLY MOLY!! All were sooo tasty and sooo amazing. I actually did a little dance with each bite I took. Don't overlook the Ginger Hot Sauce. It is soo good and not too hot, but a perfect compliment to the flavors of the entrees. Even though we were completely stuffed, and had about half of our food still on our plates--- did I mention the serving sizes? CrAzY-- we decided we definitely needed the Counter Doughnuts to go. They were spectacular as well, Simple, fried dough goodness with sugar and cinnamon on them... YUM! Not only were we smiling when we left, our wallet was smiling as well! For all of the deliciousness, we spent less than $40 total! The food here is good. I've had a few different items from the menu and it's probably one or the best viet places in all I'd Corpus Christi. They have really good Vietnamese iced coffee (1 of 2 places in the entire city that have this, crazy!) just a little overpriced for the size.. but I guess they get to being that it is considered "unique". The only reason I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars is because service really depends on who helps you when you get there... there are some really nice people, and there are some that make you feel as if you're bothering them. read more

Was disappointed by the spam musubi tho. This place is my favorite place to go in Corpus as far as Asian food goes. It has the best fusion of Asian cuisine; they have everything! They have the big hit Korean dishes like the kimchi stew, bibimbap (rice with veggie medley, meat, and egg on top), jjap chae (clear noodles with veggies), and jjajang myeon (noodles wth brown sauce). - Sorry, not used to spelling these out. They also have one of my favorite Vietnamese foods, the banh mi (viet sandwich). I also love their beef noodle stew and pork buns. On top of that, they have rice bowl and fried rice options. Then there are some Americanized options, like the Dad's Mac and sesame tots. There's the spam musubi too which I think people like. I haven't tried everything, but so far I haven't been disappointed with any of their dishes. Some things I recommend in particular are the jjap chae because it's most flavorful one I've had, and the bibimbap. Also the Vietnamese mint lemonade is good. I just wish the prices were a little cheaper, then I'd come here way more often. read more

People of Corpus Christi! Hear me now! You must, MUST go to this restaurant! I have come to your fair city for nigh on 24 hours and in that short time I have discovered a jewel beyond compare. Okay maybe that's pouring it on a little too much. However, I really did not expect to find a restaurant of this type in this town. I have nothing against Corpus Christi, and I'm sure there are many many find restaurants in the area. However, My drive from the airport to my hotel was festooned with visions of fast food and chain restaurants, mile after mile of them. My drive made me... Sad! But then somehow through the will of some dining God, I discovered Z counter. it may seem strange that I would give such a high review to a restaurant at which I only sampled two dishes. But those two dishes were so extraordinarily goodthat I cannot help but praise this tiny eatery. I needn't tell you what they were,as they were so good that I have to believe that everything else on the menu is as awesome! Now, I do have to be fully faithful to the Yelp code (What ever the heck that is) and point out that the restaurant was a bit messy and needed some tables cleared, and the floor swept. But frankly for that level of food that I enjoyed, I would gladly have taken out a broom and done the job for them! Go there Corpus Christi! Go there NOW! Great Asian fusion restaurant that is one of our foodie mainstays when we visit Corpus Christi. Not very large seating so try to beat the lunch rush or come a bit after 1 pm. Full disclosure; we have not come close to trying everything on the menu as we are addicted to a few favorites. Always a sucker for green onion/scallion pancakes. Z Counter's are light and flaky with a semi-sweet dipping sauce. I begin with good intentions to try something new, but the Chinese sausage and shiitake mushroom fried rice is heavenly and my mouth can't form words other than "Chinese sausage fried rice please." Unlike other restaurants where quantity is used in place of quality, Z Counter provides both. The steaming hot fried rice is served in a massive bowl that could double as a helmet. There are large chunks of grilled Chinese sausage and mushrooms in almost every bite and the flavors work in harmony with no one flavor overwhelming the others. A take out box is almost always required. Now for my vegetarian wife's take: Like me, she has stuck to a perennial favorite; the tofu bahn mi sandwich. Once again, a very generous portion. The demi baguette is lightly toasted, crunchy yet chewy inside and stuffed with fried tofu, cilantro, pickles and sauce. The pickles are light and crunchy with a perfect mix of salty and sweet and the layers of flavor work in harmony. Next time (and there will be a next time) I promise to try something else and I'm pretty sure it will be just as delicious. read more

I ordered one of their usually fabulous generous sized rice bowls. I ordered curry fried rice with grilled pork. The rice was delicious but the pork was inundated with a petroleum smoked taste that was awful. I took it back to the counter and informed them and he said "well what do you expect me to do about ?" I said "well obviously you don't care much about customer service" I took my bowl back to my seat and picked the pork off and tried to enjoy the rice. What a shame. I will not go back. I gave three stars only because the rest of the food was delicious. They need to work with their employees on customer service or they will lose many more customers. This place is popular with millennials so you'll see lots of man-buns and beards on the guys. Can't wait for that trend to end. Food....I ordered grilled pork over pancit noodles. Wife ordered beef short rib over rice. I got the better meal. Really tasty noodles, perfectly cooked pork. I noticed a lot of people leaving with to-go containers. NOT ME! It was so good I polished off the entire bowl. My wife did not care for her selection. She really liked mine. I gave her some of mine and vice versa. The meat in her bowl had a ton of gristle, very little edible meat. She also thought that the rice was too gummy. We'll be back and I KNOW she'll order pancit noodles next time. read more

Checked before leaving and she had chicken, asked that it be replaced with the beef and got attitude. I don't understand, I was polite, left a tip, and waited patiently. I understand mistakes, they happen. But handing my food over with a hateful attitude and a "here." was unnecessary, especially when it wasn't my fault you typed it wrong. I love this place! Closest to Hawaiian style cooking here in Corpus. I've had several of their dishes and everything always has a lot of flavor.
