Brought my 78 280z into these guys with a problem that 3 other mechanics couldn't figure out. I could barely drive it when I brought it in without it stalling or coughing and sputtering. Richard had it fixed and ready for pickup in hours. Drove home like a dream. Felt like I just picked it up from the dealer lot in 1978. Amazing service, nice to take my Z to someone who not only knows the cars and how they work, but also cares about keeping them on the road. The repair I figured would be like 1200 bucks or something because nobody could figure it out, turns out it was a minor issue causing major problems, was like 200 bucks. When I picked the car up it ran better than it ever had in the 22 years I've owned it. The car likely has had the problem the whole time I've owned but it just got worse recently. Holes in hoses etc. tend to do that over time of course. I still have to take it for smog check, but if it has passed for the past 22 years the way it was running, I'm expecting some impressive numbers after Z Expert's work for sure. Regardless, of how it does on the smog it's good to know that if it does need a tweak to pass I can take it over and have Richard and the team adjust whatever the numbers say need adjusting.. I To tell you the truth It's difficult to even find a shop that will work on these old cars. I call most places, tell them I have a 78 280z and I might as well have said "I have the plague, can I come over and hang out." Dang, I'm pretty happy with my experience just now. 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe (my baby) was overheating. I knew it was not a radiator problem or coolant etc., thought maybe a sensor. Looked up a Nissan specializing mechanic and Z Expert popped up right down the road from house. Went over, all Datsun and Nissan in the Lot, Rich took t he car in no questions and had it back to me 2.5 hours, fixed with new thermostat, and some coolant. Found my mechanic for the G. Yes, it's a classic, feel free to be impressed. Anyway, Z Expert is the best place for any Datsun or Nissan... the guys are really lowkey, but fast (good combo). I own a 1990 300zx TT and I've taken my Z to Richard a total of 3 times. I made my first visit about a year ago when I first purchased the car to have Richard perform a general inspection. He doesn't posses great people skills and never seems thrilled to be servicing your car. It's almost like he's seen so many Z's that he's no longer excited to see another Z car appear at his door step. At any rate, the inspection went well, he gave me an itemized list of things I should look into replacing and he completed the inspection within the time that he quoted. For the last year I have maintained my car elsewhere but returned recently to Z expert to have my clutch line replaced. Here are my frustrations with my last visit. 1. They are not open on weekends, therefore it is very hard to coordinate drop off and pick up if you work normal business hours during the week. 2. Richard told me to pick up the car and when i got there, the clutch feel was horrible. If you're a Z expert and tested the car after the work was performed then it should be obvious something isn't right. After waiting for Richard to end his 20 minute phone call, I waited for another 30 minutes while one of his technicians adjusted the clutch position to compensate for lack of pressure in the pedal. At this time, I was already frustrated after having driven from Long Beach in traffic to find that my car had not been repaired properly and on top of that there were no apologies for the wait or for calling me to come pick up the car before he had properly inspected the technicians work. 2b. After the adjustment, the clutch was not perfect but it was hard to tell just moving the car forward and backward on his small lot. I drove the car home and soon regretted my decision. As i was driving I would engage the clutch (lifting my foot) and the clutch would stay partially engaged not allowing the car to accelerate properly and needless to say I was not able to continue driving the car. I let the car sit over the weekend and on Monday morning I got the car towed to the shop once again. I was off on Monday and Richard guaranteed that he would have the problem corrected by the end of the day. 5:00 rolled around and I never heard from Richard. I called him on Tuesday to get an update and to my surprise, my car had not even been driven yet. The techs then went on to make a few more tweaks and then I finally got a call back just before 5:00 to let me know that my car was ready. I work in Torrance and get off work at 5 so I told him to leave my car in their parking lot and I would grab the car with my spare keys. Today marks day 2 driving my car since the readjustment and the clutch pressure is still weak and I'm having trouble shifting my car into gear. I'm not a specialist but I know about cars and it seems that the clutch has not been properly bled and that there is air trapped in the lines. I would think a specialist would know how to correct this issue the first time and could spot this problem a mile away instead of me having to point out the flawed clutch feel every time. My greatest frustration comes from the fact that I've been really kind and understanding but every time I have a conversation with Richard it seems like he has better things to do and working on my car feels like an inconvenience for him. I'm sure I could get Richard to make more adjustments to my clutch with no cost to me but at this point I would rather pay another technician to perform any other work that is needed to return my clutch back to its original state. read more

Took my car to richard today and had my clutch checked. He told me i needed a new one and that the "dealer charges $3000.00 for something like this". He then went into his office to calculate an estimate. $1575.00 is what he came back and told me. I got in my car and left because you see while he was in his office. I called Autotech by Beck in Pasadena and they quoted me $725.00. DO NOT GO TO THIS GUY. HE IS A CROOK! read more

I found Richard and Z Experts when I was desperately trying to find someone to solve the expensive 'tire roar' problem that was a design flaw in many Zs from 2002-2005. The dealer had no solutions. Nissan had no solutions. I called Z Expert explained what the problem was and within 2 hours Richard called back and told me what was needed. He ordered the part and the problem never came back. Finding a mechanic who can repair a 1975 280Z is getting harder everyday. I came across Z Expert and decided to give them a try. I found someone who I can trust to repair my old Z. I had the Z towed in, Richard and his mechanic took some time to finally resolve the problem. Since the car is a weekend driver, I would rather have them figure out the problem than to partially fix and then I have to come back. After a few weeks, Richard called and said he had the car fixed, in his message he said we finally got the craziest car in LA running. It doesn't get better than Richard. Some time ago, the "Z" had an intermittent electrical problem - stalling and sputtering when driving. I was ready to start replacing parts like crazy after a close call on the freeway. However, took it up to Richard who kept the car a few days, tracked down the problem in his usual methodical way and fixed it. I originally met Richard because of my long history with Datsuns. However, for the past few years he has done terrific work on my 99 Jeep Wrangler. Good diagnostics, great communication and everything that has been fixed has stayed fixed. Costs have been very reasonable. I have seen minor repair work in progress as well as full restorations at his shop. I would not hesitate to work with him on such a project. Z Expert gets the job done for the best price you're ever going to find. A lot can be said about any mechanic--usually, it's not anything good. I've taken my 1981 280ZX Turbo to numerous mechanics in my long ownership of it, and it has cost me a mint in the past to get anything fixed (I still have nightmares about my trip to the Nissan dealership). It says something about the Z Expert that I have been driving an hour, each way, for over ten years whenever I need to take it to a mechanic. I have no doubt that, if I had not found the Z Expert, I would not be driving my ZX now. In fact, I probably would have had it crushed down into scrap a decade ago. Richard always gets to the root of the problem at hand and takes care of it. He's a great mechanic who charges a better-than-fair fee for his services. I very highly recommend this business. Took my car there for much needed repairs. Car had been sitting up for sometime and I needed alot of work. I told them I wanted to be able to drive the car long distance if I wanted to when repairs were completed. When they presented the car to me. The engine bay was still dirty. Had cob webs in it and an obvious exhaust leak was coming from under the hood and not one of the few recommended repairs. I said ok well let me just pay and get out here. After they did a major tune up, valve adjustment, water pump install, master cylinder, wheel cylinder and brake replacement among other needed repairs. I left out of the shop heading towards Sawtelle with my friend behind me. The car bucked, sputtered, stalled, and would not accelerate above 15mph all this less than 400ft of their shop. When I finally made it back to the shop my friend following me told me it was smoking badly and the brake lights didnt work. When I parked it back at the shop and pulled up park brake up it didnt hold. The manual gear shift was so loose it felt like it was coming out of the transmission. When I talked to them later the following week I was told there was clogging at either fuel filter or fuel tank. So when I came back for the car. It was still sputtering after a test drive but noticeably better. I left them a list of things to fix after test drive they did fix most including replacing fuel tank but the fuel guage didnt work. When I got it back and again not a recommended repair. I didnt know about fuel guage til I drove to gas station and put $27 of gas it. Should be more than enough to lift fuel guage needle off of empty. Plus the shifter still felt is was going to break off in my hand. I'm done, never again. Saw great service reviews here for Z-Expert but, no such luck for me. In fact I had to take to another shop after they were done. Good Luck if you go to this shop. Wish my luck with them were better. read more

I am the original owner of a '75 2+2 Z that I bought when I lived in Portland, Or. I moved to Venice in '90 and Z Expert was nearby and a logical choice. I had only used one mechanic in Oregon and hoped to do the same in LA. Richard did a great job anytime my car had a problem. He was not patronizing or dismissive as some mechanics are towards women. Once he diagnosed the problem he explained it in clear layman's terms and suggested the best fix. He was my Z's "primary"...I wish my primary was as good with me as Richard was with my Z. During a period when I was between positions but had something that needed fixed, Richard would propose a more modest repair that would keep me mobile until I could afford the complete repair. When I moved to the mid-city area it was easier to use a mechanic that was open on Saturdays...so I did. I tried 3 different shops & spent $800 trying unsuccessfully to fix a problem when I finally called Richard and took my baby to him. I told him my tale of woe, making the "you're not open on Saturdays" excuse....he corrected the problem in about 3 hours while I waited, charged me $140. For 24 years he's kept my Z running and in great shape...if he ever decides to open only 2 days a week, or move to Orange County, he'll still have me as a customer. I have been going to Richard for almost twenty years now, and I could not recommend him more highly. There is one quality in a mechanic that trumps all others...someone you can trust. No matter who you are, you take your car to Richard, you are going to get a fair deal. You go in and think you need a $500 operation...but it turns out that just a hose was loose, Richard is going to say "Good news...just a hose." This has happened to me multiple times over the years, and often he won't even charge me for something minor like that. When I do need something more serious done, it gets done quickly and for a fair price. A fair price for quality work. I have never felt overcharged. . Someone made a comment about Richard being a good person to go to if you are female, and I second that. Richard is just a nice guy and an honest dude...take your car to him, and you are not going to get taken advantage of, even if you know squat about cars. My wife likes Richard as much as I do. We've had discussions about how much we would pay to have our car towed up to Richard if we broke down in O.C. or something, and we would definitely pay $200+ just to know that our car would be in the hands of someone we know. Take your car to someone you don't know or trust, and you deserve whatever happens. Another thing I appreciate about Richard is that if money is an issue, he'll help you do only the things you really need to do to keep your car going. The downside to all this honesty (for Z Expert) is...they do such a good job on my car, I really don't see them that often. So I am always eager to try and spread the word, as Richard is someone that deserves to have a line outside of his door. I value Richard so much I have actually bought him holiday gifts on two occasions. If you know me, that's telling. Having a good mechanic in L.A. is always going to be important. Give Richard a shot, and you will win in the long run, no matter what kind of car you have. read more

I was experiencing a stalling problem with my Nissan Maxima and the dealer was useless, the AAA garage replaced the wrong (expensive) part, and yet another garage tried seven different (also expensive) repairs before I found my hero, Richard. He knows absolutely everything about these cars, identified the problem, fixed it and my car has been running perfectly ever since. I've brought my 2004 FX35 a few times for repairs. Each time, Richard diagnosed the problem and solved it quickly, at a fair price. The shop is a no-frills place, and it can take a little while to get the work done if they are busy, so be sure to plan your day accordingly. With a 1984 Datsun 280ZX, parts break regularly. That's bad enough, but finding someone competent to fix a car Datsu 30+ years old is near impossible. Take the tail lights; I had three mechanics tell me it was the light bulb (wrong), two had no idea what the problem was, and one said he knew, but it would take time to find the part on eBay. But he never could. These were all supposed to be mechanics who had expertise in Datsuns. At Z Expert, Richard said they fix those tail lights "all the time." Sure enough; fixed. Then there was the differential. Not that I had any idea what that was, but apparently in the shape it was in, the differential could have fallen off at any time, stopping me dead (in more ways than one) on the street or freeway. With all those other mechanics, why did no one say anything about this? Actually one did make a note, but made no attempt to fix it--"you can't get the part." Well, Z Expert found the differential and replaced it. If you have a Datsun or any "Z," I suggest you stop shopping around for someone to fix your car and drive to Z Expert. I will. Once again (7 months later), Richard has fixed a problem most could not track down and the one mechanic who thought he found the problem put the part in wrong (so Richard found out). Richard is honest, friendly, and can fix a Datsun. I drive from South Orange County to Venice (405 :(), leave my car, and need to borrow a friend's car, but the inconvenience is worth it to find a Z-Expert who knows what he is doing! read more

I had a bad wire going to my airflow sensor, he was able to diagnose without replacing the expensive sensor and just replaced the cable. Never in my life have I left a comment here but it took this experience to do so... I'm sorry to say I was not able to experience this place for their work, but was shown a different face. Shawn in particular took care of me, oh so he thinks. I called the place after finding it on yelp and reading great reviews. So I called... I told Shawn my situation, that I worked 9 to 6 mon thru thurs but Friday's got off at 2... so I understood the shop had work, obviously... so I asked him about a date 3 weeks into the future... trying to plan out to leave my car a Friday and hopefully get it started a Monday so I wouldn't lose time at work and wouldn't be without a car mainly during the week to get around, which I did so and dropped off my car Friday Sep 21 (to get started sept 24)... that day of drop off he told me he was a bit behind and wouldn't be able to start Monday like we agreed but more Wednesday... you know I hate being without my car like anyone else, it's my daily driver 350z but I want this ticking sound gone and trusted this guy... so I said man, if you can have it by Friday I'll leave it... if not I can't and he said he'd have it done... why would anyone leave their car otherwise? So Wednesday the 26th I call and come to find out my car was not going to be started and not going to be done by Friday so I ended up going down that day and picking my car up... Luis and the owner talked to me and apologized and I wasn't going to leave a review but today I went into my mini glove box behind my driver seat I realized that my mini wrench/combo tool that was a present was taken... so I'm sorry Shawn had to ruin it for the shop but I only give them 1 Star read more
