When so many old school Italian bakeries are closing, I'm so glad this place is still around. I got a lemon roll, some sorta raspberry cake/roll, and a lobster tail, and they were all outstanding. Bought some Italian cookies here for Christmas. They had great prices for all their pastries. The Italian cookies were buttery and delicious. Had one of the large chocolate chip cookies and it was sweet and churchy. Will be back if I'm craving some sweets. read more

I'm sorry to report that their quality has gone down significantly in the last 2 or so years. Originally the owner was Italian and the pastry and cakes were excellent. Probably second to Lasalle bakery but they were more reasonable in price. Later another owner bought the bakery and I was told they were Portuguese, but carried on the same Italian styles and quality. Apparently another owner has bought or is running this business now and their quality has gone down hill. Last summer we ordered a Blueberry pie which was dry and chewy. We also ordered a fruit torte which was extremely hard. A month later we ordered a red velvet cake for a birthday. It was a special order and that turned out to be a disaster. The cake seemed like it had been frozen for a long time and the price was close to 40 dollars and only served 6 people. Had i been able to ordered it from Gregg's i would have because Gregg's has quality cakes and food. This week bought a red velvet for Christmas from Gregg's for about 35 dollars and it serves 12 people. I will no longer be ordering from Zaccagninis due to the lack of quality and cost. read more

Stopped by the day before Thanksgiving and picked up a Pumpkin and an Apple Pie mostly because I forgot to order them earlier. Fortunately they had both as well as a number of other choices. While we été there we picked up a few more tasty items they offer. They had a ton of other options from cakes to pastries to breads. I ended up grabbing a Blueberry Turnover (excellent) and tried one of their Raspberry Twists (also tasty). Seriously embarrassing that it was my mom who found this place on Yelp and not me. My wife is pregnant and said she was craving pizza strips. We have had some here and there, and they weren't anything to write home about. We looked up pizza strips near me and Zaccagnini's was close by so I stopped there. These pizza strips were the best we've ever had, and my wife has now asked me to stop by on my way home from work to get her pizza strips. Went here for the first time this morning and what a treat!! The woman serving us was so sweet and welcoming as I ordered a plethora of assorted treats. From Italian pastries to cupcakes to blueberry muffins, they truly have it all! A must try would be the checkerboard cake and their zeppole. I stop in here from time to time for pastries. I prefer Crugnale but they didn't offer mini pastries. I like to support local and it was my son's 16th birthday so I decided to give them a shot again. Two years ago I bought a disappointing birthday cake for his birthday (read previous review) Since it had been awhile and it was only pastries I figured it would be fine. I went in store (May 25) and placed order for 12 cannolis with chocolate chips, 12 cream puffs and 12 chocolate eclairs. It came to $36 including tray ($9/dozen + $9 tray). I decided that I really didn't need a tray but could use more pastries so I called and spoke with the same girl who took my order. She remembered me and edited my order to add 12 more cannolis, no tray. Fast forward to this morning. Somone left a message on my voicemail that I was supposed to pick up an order at 7:30 a.m. and it was now 1:00 pm. I told them that I would pick up the order in the afternoon so I don't know how they got it confused with 7:30 a.m. My husband went to pick up order and was told it hadn't been paid for which was incorrect. I no longer had the receipt because I didn't think I would need it. I had to pull up transaction on my bank account, screen shot it and text to hubby to prove payment was made. No big deal but annoying since I was busy preparing for guests. Then he calls me and asks how many pastries he is supposed to have. He was short 12 cannolis. I called and she said order was correct. He brought them back in to show that it was missing cannolis. She offered to give me a variety with nuts or refund $9. At that point I just took refund because my son only likes the ones with chocolate chips. By the way, chocolate sprinkles and chocolate chips are not the same. Not even close. That's what I got. Stupid, tastless, sprinkles on them. I called back. The woman I spoke to was very nice and apologetic. I felt kinda awful for bitching about it for a minute. I would never order from here again though. I'm actually happy that they gave me 12 less cannolis because they tasted like disappointment. What does that taste like you ask? The shell was okay but the filling was creamy and overly lemony. Not dense ricotta like creamy. Perhaps not enough ricotta or not enough confectioners sugar. Ricotta, sugar, vanilla NO lemon. I'm italian. I know a good cannoli. I love lemon by the way but it does not belong in a cannoli. Neither should chocolate sprinkles. I think my Nonnie rolled in her grave when I opened that box. The one thing I will say is the chocolate eclairs were very good. I know this is a long rant and overall just a first world problem. There are a ton of bakeries in RI, skip this one for large orders. read more

Fall is right around the corner and if you want to taste the most delicious pumpkin pie you've ever had in your life, go to Zaccagnini's. Everything they sell is delicious - breads, pies, cakes, pastries, brownies, "bakery pizza," spinach pies, etc. Over the decades, I've probably tasted everything on their menu. They sell checkerboard cake by the slice and the slice fills a dinner plate. Their brownies are dense with fabulous chocolate frosting on it. If you're going to visit someone, bring them over a pie or a pound cake. Not a fancy place. Not trendy. Just a good old-fashioned "we know how to bake great-tasting pastry" place. Oh. Very damn good pastries and cakes! I miss the Pasty Gourmet wherever the hell they went... but this place does an amazing job and the staff is very polite, professional and courteous. The cakes are very moist and rich with flavor, and the frosting that tops them is flavorful as well. They're not too thick and heavy like the cakes you get at the supermarket. The cake shelf / cupcake shelf often has themed cakes already made for whatever upcoming holiday is approaching. Say for example if Fourth of July is nearing, the red white and blue cakes would be proudly displayed. If you're not in the mood for a themed cake, NO PROBLEM! They always have German chocolate, carrot, cookies, and cream, and more cakes in the shelf for you to decide. They did my graduation cake and while it wasn't "Cake Boss" quality... it still tasted very good and there were leftovers for a couple of days! These are the highlights of the bakery: - layer cakes. - brownies. - cupcakes. - chocolate chip cookies. - donuts. - anything chocolate really. From the outside, it doesn't look so hot. In fact, when we came in this Saturday we thought it was closed. However after grabbing an easy spot to park in their back parking lot and heading to the front door, we got a real treat. This place is like the Willy Wonka factory of pastries. Soooooo many decisions to make. They've got cupcakes, Zeppoles, cannolis, about twenty different cakes, pies and fruit tarts, chocolate covered donuts, cheesecakes, you name it. The lady behind the counter was SO nice and helped us land a decision on this gigantic an awesome looking peach cream pastry... Uh... cake I suppose? Also got 10 of their mini cannolis, a bunch of cupcakes and two chocolate covered donuts. The donuts were awesome. The cupcakes were way too sweet for me, but I'm sure that kids would go nuts for them. The cannolis were pretty darn tasty. Everyone at the party was asking me where I got the peach puff pastry cake thing. They used fresh peaches, not canned soft peaches which was especially impressive to me. Overall, great place. My family has been a longtime fan of their cakes. This year, with all the COVID-19 stuff going on, my mom got my birthday cake from Zaccagnini's to try and make it a little extra-special (since we can't see friends, go out, etc.). Of all the years I've had their cake at family parties and gatherings, this was the most outstanding cake I've ever ever had. Gold cake with lemon curd filling, whipped cream frosting, and coconut topping. Unbelievable. We also got spinach pies and pizza- holy yum. Big thanks to this family bakery for finding a way to stay safely open and provide delicious goodies. Also, price couldn't be more reasonable. Came here for zeppoles on St. Joseph's day and was pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly and the pastries were delicious.

I was so excited to try this place, but it doesn't look very welcoming (or open). Once I went it, it's a bit dark and drab. But the cases full of sweet pretty things. I would up trying a cupcake ($2.75 or 3.00) and a slice of checkerboard cake ($4). First of all, they are quite a bit pricey. Then when I actually tried the checkerboard cake, the frosting was so ridiculously sweet that I couldn't finish it. The cake itself was good, but the frosting tasted worse than the supermarket frosting. I wound up throwing half the slice away because it was too sweet to eat and I didn't want to waste the calories. The cupcake was much better, but rather dry and not super flavorful. I found a cupcake place in Pawtucket who makes amazing cupcakes, and they're much cheaper. It was worth a try, but I wasn't impressed. read more

St Joseph takes a backseat to St two for the week. Not beinPatrick when it comes to mid-March holidays. To help fix that problem the Projo divied up equal column space to the two. Not being Italian myself, I learned a couple of things about St Joseph's Day from the paper. For one, St Joseph is the patron saint of people named Joe or Joseph. To me that doesn't seem fair. I don't get my own saint so why should they? Anyways, I also learned that many Italians go out of their way to eat a zeppole on St Joseph's Day. I had never had a zeppole before so I figured now was as good a time as any. I put "italian bakery" into the ol' yelp search engine and Zaccagnini's was the closest place to me to pop up. My opinion might not be valid since this was the first zeppole I've had. I likely wouldn't even review this place if I had anything negative to say since it wouldn't be fair to knock a place without having anything to base it on. But this place and the zeppole were frickin' great so I might as well give them some credit. There was a constant stream of people coming into this small place while we looked around and a constrant stream of zeppoles came from the back. Everything in the shop looked really good and while my choice was easy, the girlfriend decided she wanted something differnet. She went with a rasberrry stick which she liked. I obviously went for the zeppole. The thing was messy. The girlfriend was so turned off by watching me pound down fist fulls of vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and fried dough that I don't think she's going to let me see her naked for at least a week and a half. But it was totally worth it. This thing was great. I absolutely found a new St Joseph's Day tradition, but I don't think I'm going to go an entire year without heading back to Zaccagnini's. read more

Our family has bought the whipped cream birthday cakes since the 60's and they are excellent!!! Best cake ever - the wipped cream is not overly sweet and is light and fluffy - perfect. Can't say enough about this cake. I brought one to my sister's for her birthday party and it was the hit of the party. My aunt (89 yrs of age) couldn't say enough about how beautiful it was. Zaccannigni's is as good as a bakery gets. The staff is friendly also. They will be my next stop for my next birthday party. read more

I've gotten "not so fresh" bread and pastries here in the past but possibly for location convenience have gone back there. This morning was my swan song for this place. When I walked in the left hand side case was completely empty. I looked at the right-hand side case and didn't see what I wanted, ie, Sfogliatelle. I asked the salesperson if they were going to have any later and she said she would check in the back. After waiting a few minutes, she came out with one Sfogliatelle in tissue. I asked if it were fresh and she said something I could not quite understand. Sadly, I have had this delicate pastry that was not fresh in the past but this one from this bakery was the worst of the worst. It tasted like it was a week old, the flaky crust was so tough I couldn't bite into it and the custard filling was extremely dry and almost solid. I will say that the confectionery sugar sprinkled on the top seemed fresh and was probably applied while I was waiting. I did call the bakery a few minutes ago and told the woman who answered the phone to pass the above on to the baker. I'm not in the habit of writing any reviews like this but I felt it was warranted. read more

For 16 bucks you can get a huge three layer tiramisu cake, cant beat that. Yummy. I tried several places i.e, La Salle bakery in Providence, Pastiche (Atwells ave), Vienna in Barrington, Stop n Shop, Konditor Meister (Braintree, MA) and Zaccagnini has the best tiramisu cake I had. I also had their cheesecake which is also good and you can actually taste the cheese! My next visit I will probably get the cannolis and fruit tarts. This place is not the most decorative and parking is in the back, but that didn't matter to me. It's all about the awesome taste of my tiramisu cake! You wont be disappointed. read more

Sometimes one has to look past the front door. This store is nondescript and doesnt attract one to the place--- but once one goes inside you dont want to leave. These types of bakeries are disappearing but each case oozes with quality. It isnt just restricted to pastries for the pizza and calzones are delicious and the cakes/cupcakes are worth the drive. They have the right frosting/ cake ratio and sweetness. The people who have helped us for the times we have visited have been patient, kind and professional. The Russian Tea cake was excellent. First time I have had this cake with a chocolate base and chocolate frosting. The apple turnover was nice flaky and lots of apple filling. I've been going to this bakery since I was a child. Always loved the pastries and the employees have always been friendly. I just recently stopped in for the first time in quite a while and was not happy with my experience. The woman at the counter acted as though we were a nuisance to her and was rather short and rude. Then a younger woman from the back came out and was rude on the phone with a customer. If this is how customers are treated not sure I wanna go back. Just walked into the Cumberland location looking to try and order a birthday cake. There was 2 customers who walked in after us and were greeted and got their order taken. We asked about cake size and got eye rolls. We asked about fillings and they walked away. The 2 women who (helped us) did not even now what tree nuts were. The were not willing to help us. The women with brown hair was rude, and simply irritated to take our order. This bakery is located a mile away from my house,however it is not worth the aggravation to go back there!!! read more
