I asked myself what makes a fantastic pizza? I mean, fundamentally all pizzas are all the same rite? Well... in lieu of heading home after a seldom trip to Berkeley I thought a pizza was a necessity of a Wednesday night dinner. A few of my colleagues have been talking about this place and I've seen several fantastic reviews on Yelp... I just had to since I was in town. I ordered the half baked deep dish pizza, carne and pepperoni. Dude, that thing is insanely heavy! & I suggest calling in an order if you're thinking about getting a half baked 'cause parking is crazy!! Took like twenty minutes to get my pizza and I was given the tip to let the pizza thaw to room temperature before nuking the fat slab of tomato and meat. So that night I baked the pizza and handed it over to my boyfriend to critic this monstrosity... No. 1, he doesn't like hella tomato. Numero Deux, he was overwhelmed... naturally it was filling... so he wasn't so ecstatic as I thought he'd be. At first I was like ... ehhhh... It's okay. But the next day! Holy Moly! Just came here last night, after a couple years. I used to come here all the time when I was living back at home (El Cerrito.) As I am older now, I appreciate the paintings that they have. As a younger person, I didn't so much. LOL I know this place is very popular/busy, and everyone loves it. I still, wish that it was bigger. Been coming for last 20 yrs. Deep dish still taste great. Why?! It's cuz of the abundance of flavorful tomato sauces caked on top of the pie. AND the crust is kinda like thick crispy pie crust. The sauce makes all the difference. Normally would never eat the crust on the edge, but here I eat everything. Pizza is a bit pricey though. My small 10 inch pizza with four topping and a soda came up to $34. Soda was $2.50 btw. Unfortunately can't afford to eat here too often as one can see. Finally went to the only Zach's that I hadn't been to yet. I have to say that I actually didn't dine here as I was just getting my customary half baked vegetarian as well as a large caesar salad. Zach's has their operations down pat. We had been at an all-day sports tournament nearby with some hungry and cranky kids. They were not going to have the patience sit there and wait 25 min for their pizza. Ao the kids were already impatient when I told them to wait in the car while I ran in. Good thing we were ordering to go as the place was packed and the line looked long. But I just walked up to the register and ordered my half baked small mushroom and spinach, and a large Caesar to go. The Caesar serves 2-3 people. Before my credit card even cleared and I had signed for it, the pizza and salad were ready to go. Crisis was averted as the kids ate the Caesar cheese sticks on the way home. A deep dish pizza takes about 15 minutes after pre-heating the oven to 450 degrees. Yes I have lived in Chicago and I think this deep dish is on par with and maybe even slightly better than any ever tasted. I used to go to Zachary's at least once a year. A friend of mine that went to UC Berkeley told me about this place and whenever I need to go to No. Cal. I would make a stop at Zachary's. I landed at Oakland Airport around 11:00 and know that it was going to take about 45 minutes to go to Zachary's and it usually takes about 30-40 minutes for a pie to be ready so I called and place an order to eat there. I ordered a small pepperoni and mushroom. When I got there, I sat down and 1 minute later the pie was in front of my face I love the juicy tomatoes and the gooey cheese. First time ever stepping foot in Berkeley, so I called up my friends for some places to go to. The undisputed consensus: Zachary's. I'm like, ok, deep dish pizza, I'm always down for deep dish pizza so what the hell. Plus my friend that I was rolling (no, he's a BRUIN like me) with vouched for it too so easy decision. And I can't help but grin at the fact that we found a parking spot RIGHT in front of the place. The one great thing about this place that other places should emulate is that you can put your pizza order in while you wait. Genius idea, considering it took somewhere near 45 minutes to cook this bad boy and we waited for 25 minutes to sit down. And I came on a Sunday when the rush wasn't really there. I can imagine how crappy the wait must be on a Friday or Saturday night. Half Italian meatball/half BBQ chicken, 100% awesome. Very cheesy, awesome flaky crust, extremely fresh ingredients. There's tomato sauce, and then there's TOMATO SAUCE. And this is the latter. Like honestly, my words aren't good enough to describe this pizza. My dining partner had fond memories of pizzas past fro Zac's and I think he was a bit disappointed. He insisted we have the Spinach and mushroom and I must say that the Spinach gave the pie and unpleasant earthy taste that permeated the entire pie. I was not fond of the crust as it tasted a bit like a cracker. I have had Chicago style at 2 other places but never in Chicago so I can not say I am an expert. One of the best gluten free crust I've tried. I wanted to give a shout out to this business and how they have streamlined the social distancing process. All employees had on masks. Customers were appropriately separated based on if they were coming or going. The cashier disinfected the touch screen before and after I used it. I was the only one who handled my card as to not pass any germs along. The cashier also politely checked in with me about my mask to confirm that the style was the safest for me and other people I might be in contact with. When I went to grab my pizza it was placed on a separate table so that no social distancing was violated. I was just so impressed how easy this business made social distancing. Whenever we visit the Bay Area we make it a point to visit Zachary's. Sometimes we unwisely try to pair this with a follow up visit to Fenton's. I know! Not this time - we were all about the pizza. This location is directly across the street from Trader Joe's. It's like torture! To start off our visit right, we found some street parking on the street directly adjacent to the restaurant. Whoo! We ordered 2 pies. There were 5 of us - 3 kids and 2 adults. We didn't care. The pies were deep and full of tons of cheese and other quality ingredients. Our waitress brought them to the table, set them on some stools at table height, and proceeded to serve us. Good thing - we would have been so intimidated! - these pies were sizable and so heavy! My kids could barely eat one piece. I had a salad starter - yummy, but I should have saved more room for the pizza. My BIL and I valiantly tried to power through but it just wasn't happening. We took the rest home and had the pizza for 2 more meals, but there was no wasting it - it was soooo good! This place can get VERY crowded and we were lucky to get in when we did. Fortunately, because it was a weekday it was not so bad, but if you're going on a weekend or Friday night, just beware. It's very close to the BART station and a lot of other fun stuff is within walking distance. We did walk around a bit after we ate - we were so full we couldn't just get back in the car! Instead of being incredibly happy after eating this sinfully delicious meal, I'm actually feeling incredibly guilty. It was soooo good. But probably sooooo bad for me. I have tried their spinach and mushrooms, Mediterranean, Good health, etc. all very good choices. This time I am surprised to find they have Gourmet mushroom and All veggie on their menu. I could wait to give both of them a try. I called 30 mins ahead and asked to make my deep dish to-go. The lady who picked up the phone was really cheerful and professional. 30mins later I got my perfectly divided deep dish with wholewheat crust. I only wish there were more toppings on my All Veggie. Coming back to dine in some years after my last visit, I noticed the decor is spruced up- yes, they still have the incredible, pizza poster artwork hanging up and down the walls, but they have added a pop of color with a pleasant yellow and mirrors on the wall by the line area. The space feels bright and open! The food: stuffed crust is ALWAYS the way to go here! We ordered a medium super veggie and a full order of Caesar salad for four ppl. How have I not written a review about this GRAND SLAM FANTASTIC place ?!?! Forsure my go-to spot for pizza because my boyfriend and I are snobs and won't eat pizza unless it's delicious, WORTH-IT pizza !! I've never been disappointed with the service or quality of food at Zachary's. One of the most popular pizza locations in the Bay area for a reason. I recently visited Chicago and tried their deep dish pizzas and honestly, I sort of liked Zachary's better. Have it be the endless basil I'm able to shake on top of my pizza, or the satisfaction of taking a bite into the flaky, crunchy, but also soft crust, or how chunks of soft tomatoes mesh perfectly with the assortment of meats... Zacharys takes the cake (or in this case, takes the pizza !!) I always order the Carne Deep Dish and have tried other pizzas like their Veggie or Chicken, but you have to go with the Carne if you're a meat lover. The layer of sausage at the bottom of the deep dish makes every bite enjoyable and the random bits of bacon add great flavor! Make sure to call ahead of time if you know you're dining in during lunch because they can start cooking the pizza, which takes 30-40 minutes to fully be cooked and ready to serve. You can't call ahead during dinner because they're normally packed so you'll have to go inside to put your name down. Luckily, there's a lot of cute stores nearby to kill time. I love this place so much I brought a family friend who was visiting from Asia ... and Zacharys was the one of the reasons he wanted to move to America because he loved the pizza so much. Heck, he always orders pizza in Singapore and always expresses his cravings for even a bite of Zacharys deep dish! The food was awesome. These 3 stars are based purely on the food. If it would have been the service. It would have been a negative star or 2. My waitress sucked. In all my time of eating out I have never not left any tip. Guess there is a first time for everything. She was standing in the back clearly in sight and drinking a drink. I seen her once when I ordered and once when I asked for a refill. When my refill was brought back I said thank you and she set it down and no response. It seems she had time to cut up and visit with some other employees but not stop by and check on how the food was. Probably one of the top 3 worst waitress/server I have ever had. Ok, wtf....I'll keep this one short as my first one didn't post...and is lost forevers. Glory glory to Zachary's Pizza! A nice break from traditional pizzas where all the toppings are on top...and definately a treat when all that's around me is Round Table and Pizza Hut (beware of the delivery man, Lazar!!) (...although I do love Costco pizza's) Thick, pie-cake-like pizza where the cheese is melted deep in the center and the toppings are baked together with the sauce. I find myself doing the Egyptian everytime I bite off a t-rex chunk off my slice, trying to get the stringy cheese into my mouth without having to snip it off. Stringy cheese is the best. If you're a traditional kind pizza person, then you may not like Zachary's. This location in particular was pretty busy the last time we came (but we had a large group of about 10 and it was dinner time on a weekend...) and we waited about 30 min. or so before being seated. When you're in the Berkley north Oakland area and are craving deep dish Chicago style pizza give this place a try. We saw the reviews and knew we had to try this place out. It gets busy with take outs and dine in so call ahead. Ultimately the service was good and they were friendly and honest and direct about the choices and what the go to items were in the restaurant. The ambiance is loud but quiet and it's good for faMilies and sport teams after games or after watching a Cal game. We were a large group so we caught the offf guard however they did weLL taking care of uS and explaining the dish choices and we enjoyed ourselves. The pizza and the crust was amazing. I've been going here since I was a kid. My favorite deep dish pizza in the world. For some reason I didn't think any of the stuff in Chicago is better than Zachary's. I normally get take out, but every once in a while I'll dine in. Zachary's has a pretty efficient system to order/eat etc. You can also get half baked so you can finish it off at home and have it fresh and piping hot in the comforts of your home. I've never done this option, just letting people know it is a possibility. The deep dish and thin crust pizzas are both amazing. I love both of them and could eat either one on any given day. This is one of my favorite meals. You can see from yelp pictures what the pizza looks like, and there is only one way to find out how it tastes... The restaurant is no frills and there is metered street parking. If you haven't been here before, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. read more

I'm a regular at Zachary's and honestly can't believe I haven't written a review yet. I always make my own deep dish with sausage, black olives, and mushrooms! One of the most consistently good deep dish pizza joints in the area. Sometimes service can be spotty depending on the waiter you get. I drink a lot of diet coke and am in need of constant refills. I usually pre-warn the waiters and sometimes they're really on top of it! Sometimes they give me double sodas but other times they're really slow on the refills. Deep dish pizza: 10/10 Diet coke: 10/10 Service: 7/10 Ambiance: 9/10 ( It gets loud but its a very lively atmosphere) Tip: Wait times can be hefty but you can order your pizza when you get there and it will be done by the time you're seated. read more
