This is probably hands-down my favorite pizza place in Berkeley. I love deep dish, Chicago style pizza. Unfortunately, I can't eat it anymore because of being gluten-free but my memory of it is oh so good. I do have their gluten-free pizza now and it's also very good. My family still enjoys the Chicago style deep dish. Their sauce is so good, I've tried to replicate it when I make pizza at home and think I have come pretty close, but not quite. It's always quite busy in there and buzzing with people happily eating. The service has always been excellent. read more

Really a great pizza. Came in the summer to avoid the college student crowds, easy parking and no wait for a table or to order.

Stopped by with my daughter for a quick slice and took advantage of their lunch special -- a slice of pizza, Caesar salad, and a soda for $12.95. It's one of my favorite deals. This Solano location is one of the few that offers a veggie slice, which I really appreciate. At other locations, you usually have to substitute with a personal Zachary's Special (no sausage), which is more expensive. Unless I'm getting the deep dish version, the veggie slice is really the only one I'll order. Service was great from the moment we walked in -- greeted warmly and served right away. Ordering was simple and easy. They had just pulled a fresh pan of veggie slices out of the oven, so both my veggie slice and the pepperoni slice were hot and fresh. There's plenty of seating, the dining room was clean, and I always love the customer-submitted artwork on the walls -- it's one of those consistent touches I enjoy at all Zachary's locations. First and foremost, the customer service from both chaps was spectacular. Definitely made us feel welcome, were patient with my indecision, and was very accommodating. Restroom AND restroom was clean. That's a big plus in my book. About a dozen tables available and the noise level was not too loud. I ordered A SMALL Chicago deep dish pepperoni pizza. (Check vid for cheese pull.) It was hearty, heavy, and delicious. 2 slices filled me up. I'll be avoiding eating something this dangerous for about year, minimum. I give my pie a 5 out of 5! My bestie ordered Small Thin crust Chicken Special w/ vegan cheese. It was the yums. Only downside was that at certain points, the chicken/cheese/bbq sauce will slide off the pizza. I came to this iconic location of Zachary's Chicago Pizza after visiting the original location on College Ave in Oakland. I didn't think I could eat Zachary's pizza two times in one day, so I waited a couple of days. This location at the top of Solano Ave is the second location to open, back in the 80's, so it's been here a long time. Like the Oakland location, parking is a bit of a pain in the area. Don't even think about parking at the grocery store across the street, they have a guy watching the parking lot and where you go. One trick with Zachary's, is if you're ordering deep dish pizza, call it in advance and then get in line. There's usually a wait for a table here as the inside is quite a bit smaller than the Oakland location. They take 45 min to prep and cook and you may not be the first person in line, so be patient, it's well worth it. The deep dish is the same at all the locations with that yummy flaky crust and fillings. Go for the stuffed option, where you get another thing crust layer on top and that is covered with sauce and cheese. The servers are very experienced with serving the first pieces to the guests. It's best to let them do the first piece and then the other pieces are easier to serve. We got the Zach Classic again, I love that combo. I'd like to try the half baked option sometime and then finish the cook at home whenever I wanna eat. read more

Zachary's is a true East Bay gem. I always take out-of-towners here, including those who have lived in Chicago and they always have great things to say about it. I always wind up parking a few blocks away but it's not too much trouble. They make everything to order and they do warn you that the deep dish pizzas will take time to bake. So don't come here expecting fast food. Service is always great, the server has always plated up our first slices for us. They do get busy, so be patient! Tried Zachary's for the first time and it was also my first time having deep dish, I'm a big fan! There were plenty of vegetarian options. We got the spinach and mushroom pie, and it was delicious with amazing cheese pulls. A small was more than enough for two, possibly three, so it's a great value. The arugula salad was a light, fresh starter. The pizza did take about 30 minutes to come out, but the cozy ambiance and attentive service more than made up for it. Our server checked in often and kept our waters topped off. The restaurant wasn't busy when we went, which made for a relaxed experience. I also really liked the unique wall art! Parking was a bit of a challenge on a Saturday afternoon, metered spots are limited nearby, but there's free residential parking a short distance away. No quotes around special, because even though we've ordered it for decades, it's always special. Get a large, not a medium, leftovers keep. And it always get eaten. Haven't adventured beyond that on the menu, and when it's that good, why? We did once order a large salad, maybe 10 years ago and people said it was just OK. But I digress. My absolute favorite pizza in the world!! I wish they had this in SoCal! Zachary's Chicago Pizza adds a fun twist to their pizzas with a hearty amount of fresh tomato sauce coating the toppings. I especially like their Good Health and Zachary's Special flavors, split half-half. A medium stuffed pizza was perfect for our party of 4. Their salads are delicious too. The Solano location was peaceful on a Thursday evening with great service. The pizza does take a while to come out though so if you're dining in, make sure you budget enough time. read more

We come here every Saturday. It's great food, friendly service, and family-oriented. The overall quality and taste of the pizza and Caesar salad is excellent. The portions are also very satisfying. I really wanted to like it , but on this crust, it fell really short. The crust is just not good. It was bland, uninspired, and was just a mess! It was a huge disappointment. As always, the service was great - a combination of younger severs and older ones. All top notch and fantastic! Truly a pleasure dining at this location with this staff! Good job! We will be back for the deep dish, but avoid the thin crust at all costs. So many better thin pizzas in Berkekey that really are special and taste phenomenal. This little gem in Berkeley or Albany is great. It's it's on a strip of little boutiques that you can walk to while waiting for your pizza there. It's consignment shops and bedazzled shops and luxury rug, shops and all kinds of shops and the service was really good you can sit and our takeout and we decided to take out got home and we got the deep dish pizza. It was so good. Oh my gosh, perfect cheese Just good. The Ambiance you can go on a date there a first date will be great. There are somewhere to take the kids a solo day. One of my favorite things is grabbing a slice on-the-go, and Zachary's has an awesome lunch special available from 11a-3p that includes a slice of choice (usually cheese, pepp, veggie, or sausage) with a side Caesar salad and drink (iced tea or fountain) for $12.50! Slices at $6.50 a pop! Service is always quick, efficient, and friendly ~ as much as I enjoy getting deep dish with friends..our fam typically does the traditional thin-crust! Love the cornmeal crust, it's truly to me what sets Zach's apart from other local pizza spots. Hearty toppings, chunky tomatoes, amazing ranch. The way to my heart! The Zachary's Special (cheese, Italian sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper) is a go-to and don't sleep on the Barbecue Chicken, so fire! We've been coming here for years, and their pizzas have been consistently awesome. We usually get their Stuffed Spinach and Mushroom pizza to go. As soon as we got home, we went to town. By the time I realized I forgot to take a picture of the pizza, it was too late haha. Just know the pizza taste very fresh. It doesn't leave that heavy icky feel like other pizzas would. Come at me all you want but having been to Chicago, I can honestly say that we do it here in the Bay Area better than in Chicago. I see this place pop up all the time as the featured restaurant for the week on my sf2bay newsletter (I live in Los Altos) and have made a note to try it out but have never gotten a chance. One weekend over the holidays, my family had lunch at nearby Chez Panisse. My family always likes to pick up a pizza from Cheeseboard for dinner but it was closed for the holiday. I asked one of my clients who lives in Berkeley for an alternative and she recommended Zachary's, a "Berkeley classic" as she put it. Even though we came at 3:30 PM (since it was after lunch), this place was quite busy so you can tell it's popular. Even though the interior and ambiance are quite nice, this place still gives off the classic Berkeley hipster vibe. We got the combo and chicken specials. The pizzas were super tasty and you can tell the ingredients were super fresh. Even my dad who normally doesn't like deep-dish enjoyed the pizzas. Although Cheeseboard is still our go-to pizza in Berkeley, we have now found a reliable alternative if it is closed in the future! read more

Ah Zachary's! For a institution that has little to no competition out there (esp. since the demise of PATXIS) it is rare that you have a restaurant that remains excellent year in year out. We have been going here for almost 3 decades and I was shocked when I realized I have never thrown down a review. There are exactly 2 of these apex deep dish pizza places. It can be beyond insane during busy times. As such we typically visit off peak times. The thin crust pizza is good but what you really want.... nay need is the deep dish. The pizza takes time to cook. So plan on that and enjoy your apps in a leisurely manner. The Pizza: I typically order a deep dish with red sauce, pepperoni, sausage, onions, peppers, black lives and garlic. The crust is perfect. flaky but with enough doughy give, it would be awesome by itself with a good cheese. The sauce is fresh, rustic and has a ton of flavor. The gooey cheese leaves a train from the pie to your plate. These are stick to your rib slices and no matter how you put your pie together its going to be tasty. We added bacon last time and it was just as good. I would limit ingredients. Too many will destroy the delicate balance int he pie Salad: The Caesar was fresh and flavorful. Unlike most places catering to the bland common denominator you can (as you should) taste the anchovies in the dressing. It was a tasty way to kill time waiting for your deep dish. One of my first dates 30+ years ago was at Zach's on College Ave. My sig. other ordered extra tomatoes and to this day, I'm relentless on my teasing as only old married couple can do. There's a layer of tomatoes on top so hint....absolutely no need for extra tomatoes. The quality is still there after all these years. The crispness of the crust, oozieness of the cheese (that's right ...made up a word everyone understands) and the the service were top notch. This is the pie I where I throw out tracking carbs or being concerned with Keto. It's about enjoying life in the moment. Eat this pie. The only regret was I could not eat more. Unfortunately I'm probably an oddball for being unable to wait around for their deep dish, but I was short on time so I figured lunch specials on a different kind of pizza should be fine right? Well, to similarly minded folk I say: it's reasonable value to feed yourself in a pinch but a good pizza it was...not quite. A very casual joint that seems mixed between table-service and first-come-first-served depending on what you tell the folks up front. Either way, you can walk right up to the front to put in your order in and things come out pretty fast. I'm not sure what I was expecting for the pizza, but for six bucks a slice I was at least convinced it'd be better than what I got. The lunch special in of itself will definitely help fill you up and at least in terms of volume it is a very hefty slice. However, this is mostly because it's so thick on the bottom that it's hard to think this is their thin-crust. I had to drink the iced tea with eat bite cause the dry bottom was hard to eat by itself. Way beyond dry and with very little in the way of sauce (not to mention my sausage just didn't have much sausage, see if you can see any in the picture). The salad was honestly better than the pizza. I'd give them another chance for a deep dish pizza, but I can't recommend their thin-crust, not by the slice at least as per their lunch special. It works in a pinch, but it's not a noteworthy eat. read more

After reading all the 5 stars reviews I had high expectation which didn't meet. Chicago pizza I had in Chicago was way better. The restaurant only had few groups of customers around 6pm on weekday dinner and tables are mostly empty.. (maybe this was red flag) We had to wait 30~ mins to get stuffed Zachary's special, which tasted just like tomato sauce with few sausage bites and some veggie chunks. The 12" tomato sauce pizza costed $40 after tax & tips (def not worth). The crust is really hard to chew and the pizza wasn't as deep / stuffed as when I had in Chicago. The server was friendly although they only came around our table just to take order, bring food and to get check. Maybe this place used to be better or I had too high expectation.
