After reading all the 5 stars reviews I had high expectation which didn't meet. Chicago pizza I had in Chicago was way better. The restaurant only had few groups of customers around 6pm on weekday dinner and tables are mostly empty.. (maybe this was red flag) We had to wait 30~ mins to get stuffed Zachary's special, which tasted just like tomato sauce with few sausage bites and some veggie chunks. The 12" tomato sauce pizza costed $40 after tax & tips (def not worth). The crust is really hard to chew and the pizza wasn't as deep / stuffed as when I had in Chicago. The server was friendly although they only came around our table just to take order, bring food and to get check. Maybe this place used to be better or I had too high expectation. Having been from Chicago, and lived there for over two decades, I was in the Berkeley neighborhood and had to try Zachary's deep dish pizza--especially since a fellow Chicagoan suggested it. Zachary's is quite good. I seem to recall, or have romanticized, that the sausage on pizzas in Chicago as being more even flavorful than this delicious sausage I enjoyed today, though. However, I would entirely eat this deep dish pizza again with pleasure. I got it with sausage and spinach. I *have* to mention the crust--it was PERFECT. With all the cheese and other ingredients...other pizza places can have a challenge making the crust bottom crunchy. Not Zachary's!! Their crust was *exactly* as I remember it in Chicago. The staff is attentive and friendly. I came mid-day on a Sunday and it was a happy, lively place with almost every table occupied. I have always loved the service here - I'm not sure what the secret is, but everyone always seems super friendly, and makes me feel welcome and appreciated. It may be one of my favorite caesar salads of all time. Big hunks of croutons - just amazing! We got a Medium stuffed pizza - the combo -with black olives and artichoke hearts. It came out shortly after we finished the salad. If you havne't been here, the stuffed pizzas are a thick pan-baked Chicago style pizza. The crust is amazing - flaky, and a little yeasty tasting. The physical features of this place are very interesting. Walking in my eyes followed around the walls of all the things that they have up there that makes this place unique to itself. It was warm and there was a buzz in the air you could tell that the customers were happy and excited to get to their pizza and I looked around to see the reasons why. I peeked into our neighbors Box of pizza to see what they got. OMG. We got ours to go and it was worth a wait. It truly was like a Chicago style deep dish pizza. And the flavors were fresh the cheese was creamy I'm so happy that they don't use that cheap skimmed milk product that makes your pizza so rubbery. The pizza sauce was perfect. Though ours was to go I still stopped and had a beer and took time to enjoy the room and watch other people enjoy their food. I've been wanting to try this place for a while since I've heard Zachary's is highly rated as pizza places go. Both times, I ended up doing a create own small pizza, stuffed (deep dish/thick crust), only cheese and sauce (no toppings). Although I considered some of their premade options and adding toppings, I ultimately decided against it since each topping is rather steep in cost, and getting a pretty bare bones pizza gives me a better sense of what the main part of the pizza tastes like. The first time I ordered in person and it was a 40 minutes wait for it to be ready for pickup; however, it did seem they had a lot of staff working at the same time which is great. The second time, I ordered ahead on the phone to not have to wait. The pizza was definitely heavy on the tomato sauce, and the cheese itself tasted delicious and dense yet gooey. It's very thick, the bread is dry around the crust but not too dry to be unpleasant. Overall it tastes pretty rich (and could probably be almost like garlic bread, if we had put garlic and removed the tomato sauce). This no-toppings pizza I created was almost like ordering cheesy bread with tomato sauce, which is not a bad thing in my eyes. The one thing that I'm intrigued by and don't really understand is the ownership model for Zachary's - it advertises itself as an employee-owned company specifically, but not as a worker-owned co-op, and according to the website, it's employee-owned because the employees all own stocks/shares of it? For those of you commuting here, you can consider parking out front on the street or like us hike the 20 minutes from the campus (not recommended on a hot day). We ended up ordering two pizzas, one deep dish and another thin. The server informed us of the cooking times to set expectations. We opted to have them come out at the same time. Meanwhile, we enjoyed some beers and chat it up (much like other folks who come here - it can get a bit loud). When our pizza came (yes singular), we welcomed it with hungry stomachs. We got a medium classic deep dish and it fed us 4 comfortably. The blanco thin didn't come until a bit later and they were so kind to comp the late the pizza (they apparently had a mixup with another table). It was delicious and again fed us 4 comfortably. The thin pizzas are not too filling and have a nice balance of toppings. While tasty, I'm still heavily preferential to their deep dish. This wasn't my first visit to Zachary's and certainly not the last. If I lived any closer, it would be the place to go to satisfy my monthly pizza craving! read more

Came at 2pm for late lunch on a Saturday and we were seated immediately. As soon as we sat our server came up to see if we knew what pizza we wanted since they are deep dish and take a while to cook. We needed a few more minutes because all of the pizzas sounded so good and it was hard to pick one. We ended up ordering a half chicken special and half BYO of pepperoni, bell pepper and black olives. Ordered a Caesar salad and some beers to enjoy while we waited. Shareable Caesar salad was big and loaded with freshly shaved cheese. There were 3 of us and we managed to finish it, but barely because we had to save room for the pizza. Beer selection wasn't too expansive but they did have some local cans which was nice. Ended up with a hazy IPA from an Oakland brewery and it was the best hazy I had that day (post two breweries). Pizza came in about 30 minutes and was piping hot. Filled with gooey cheese and topped with zesty sauce, it was a true deep dish pizza. I've had deep dish in Chicago and this one definitely compared. Ordered a medium which was 8 slices, ended up having 2 a piece and leaving with 2 slices. Microwaved one later that night and it was still damn good. Zachary's is always a must every time I come home to visit. There are a few places that come close in SoCal, like Tony's Little Italy in Placentia but nothing as delicious. Due to Covid, had to show vaccination card and ID to dine inside. We did and it was a reassuring to know other diners did too. Individual Spinach salad with feta and bacon was gigantic - could have easily shared this side salad with 2 other people. Our server was great, checking in frequently and taking care of us. Then the Main Event, what we've all been waiting for, our deep dish Mediterranean! Stuffed full of green olives, artichoke hearts, cheese and tomatoes... it was a sight to behold. I've heard they have thin crust too but I ask myself, why? Deep dish is the whole point. It's Friday and you're walking through Costco and find (2) $50 Zachary's gift cards for $80. What do you do?? Well, we bought them and immediately redeemed for dinner. I believe we have eaten at every Zachary's pizza location in the Bay Area, that's how much we enjoy their deep dish pies. In this occasion, we had dinner at their Solano Ave location, which happens to be our local Zachary's. The restaurant was full but a large party was leaving so we lucked out and didn't have to wait much. We didn't need to see the menu as we placed our order ahead, and we mentioned it to our server so she could link our pie to our table. About an hour goes by and everyone is getting their pizza except us, and that's when we flagged down the gentleman who was checking people in. He looked into it and found our pizza boxed and staged in the pick-up area - no biggie it was a busy night and were not the type to make a fuss over nothing. The pizza was still fresh and delicious - we had a medium half carne and half Zach's special. Zachary's pies are always consistent and don't disappoint, regardless at which location you are dining in. The BAD: Upon payment we handed our gift card to our server, but on the return trip got the manager (assuming) who brought to our attention that we couldn't tip using the gift card. In that very instance, I had the biggest regret over buying a Costco deal (which by the way has a nice display near the coffee aisle) to save $20 in the long run. Before he got carried away, I stepped in and mentioned that we were actually tipping in cash, and upon learning that he left the receipt and walked away. I understand he meant good, but at the same time it's rude to assume people don't tip in cash. Idk! Again, I did take some offense to his comments and not sure if I'll be using the rest of my balance to dine-in.. I'll do pick up. If there's a tipping issue, management must find a creative way to put the message out to all customers. I don't believe the solution is to send the manager to your table to say out loud that you just used a gift card and not tipping. That's embarrassing.
