If you're staying at the hotel, Zach's is just upstairs and super convenient. We sat inside the bar area which I believe is a different location than the main dining room. This may be why our service was impacted. Our bartender, while super friendly and trying to do his best, was overwhelmed and had just started. Lots to learn. The dishes were all really well presented - that takes skill, in and of itself. While these weren't dishes I would come back for, it was a nice, quiet dinner to end a full day. And, don't overlook location - this is in Alaska, so you will pay more. That aside, nothing was spectacular but nothing was terrible enough to leave on the table as well. More on point seasoning would have breathed life into my jambalaya. My dinner mates had similar comments about the chicken pasta and taquitos. The French Dip went over well with my dad. What would I change to up the service and experience? Direct guests to the main dining room if service cannot be duplicated in the larger bar area. Maybe add another bartender to help out in the evenings, when it tended to be busier. Offer a limited drink menu and nothing more. This might increase the speed and also play to the strengths of the staff. For us, it took a long while to get our total drink order and mine never came, so I ended up ordering a local cider. Bring a chilled glass with the cider, friend. Our check took a while as well. The food came timely. So, again, the patterns looked to be with the staff manning the bar area. Ate nachos that were really good. Also had artichoke appetizer, wow! Service was great until we wanted to get our bill. Waitress was slow getting back to us but she was also tending bar, and the place got really busy. So try the place out, I don't think they deserve all the negative reviews they have gotten lately. My dinner friend got samples of both soups to see if they were too spicy for her, something most restaurants wouldn't do. This was a nice little food spot inside a hotel. The ambiance was nice, almost sophisticated in the dining area we were in which had rich wood tables and bookshelves. The food and service were good as well. We went here for lunch and it was quite busy, but thankfully the service was on top of things. We got fried calamari, a Rueben, and salmon cakes. The fried calamari was delicious. Nicely crisp but tender inside. We couldn't stop eating it. The Rueben was also very good and the bread was structured but still soft and easy to eat. The salmon cakes were good as well. They had a familiar taste to us because we grew up around asian food so that speaks for it's authenticity. It was nicely flakey and well seasoned. It just really gets under my skin to pay $6 for bread when I've paid $23 for a main course that should include it. It's good bread but I feel ripped off every time. And a bourbon and coke is like $10 so be warned. The seafood pasta was good, but that tiny spec at the top rim of the bowl is the shrimp. I could put two of them on a quarter without lapping over the side. I didn't see any scallops at all. Lots of fish though. Garden salad, peach crisp and coffee all pretty good. Update, overall review increased to 4 stars after my 20th meal. (Im at Sophies a lot.). I have lots of really good meals, most things on the menu, all quite good. Since I was staying at the hotel, I ordered my meal to go back to my room. I did sit in the lounge while I waited for my order. The lounge is very nicely decorated and would be excellent for an intimate meal. There is a full bar available with a large variety of wines available. The staff was very nice and professional. Offered me a water while I waited for my meal which came out within 5 minutes. First, I ordered the calamari from the small plates menu. It was crispy outside and cooked just right. It was served with cocktail sauce and a remoulade sauce and lemon slices. I also ordered the Alaska Fish and Chips. Three pieces of cod, battered and fried. The coating was soaked in grease which was disappointing. The fries, chips, were overcooked and hard. The coleslaw was not to my taste. Perhaps this was a fluke. This is like a secret restaurant, tucked away inside Sophie's Station. Tiny bar area, but still a cozy atmosphere overall. We had craft IPA beer on tap, was delicious! 12, 16, or 22 oz! Ordered the hummus app, was curious when it came with a salsa and a honey mustard but when you put all of it on a pita chip it is an amazing combination of flavors. I had chicken carbonara for an entree, so good. The chicken and marinara was perfect, on top creamy sauce with tortellini. The only thing that was disappointing was the service. I ordered a rib eye, rare, that came with mashed potatoes, and steamed veggies. I ordered a French red wine that I don't even know how to pronounce, but was absolutely lovely to drink. I was disappointed in the steak, though tasty it was cooked medium instead of rare (ummm, HUGE DIFFERENCE in temperatures) and the server said he would let the cooks know. I mean, I even asked the guy beforehand how well the cooks cook their steaks and he said well, liar (or maybe they cook their steaks more on the well side than the rare, ar ar ar). I thought he should have made the attempt to take back the steak to recook to my specs, but apparently being a server is outside his skill set (also the steak was $36, so I should have got what I ordered). This might sound snarky, but he also had a bit o' 'tude with me upon my entering and making the mistake of sitting in his section. Starting with the artichoke dip which was completely flavorless and served with heated up bread 2/10. The blackened chicken cesar salad was underwhelming with old lettuce and lacking dressing. The chicken was the only good thing about it but honestly how do you mess a chicken cesar salad up? We ordered the lava cake and we're served in to go boxes. My friend never received her meal and the waitress never checked in to see that. Just to top things off after delivering my husbands wings the waitress came back over and asked if she could give his order of wings to another table and if he had touched them yet. Excuse me? The food came out cold (Fish n' Chips & Reuben) and Dave couldn't take the time to fill our drinks. The fish tastes like any other defrosted treat I would serve my kids from Safeway. The dipping sauce... Not sure what it was. What it was, was a white sauce with maybe relish. It was bland enough I am not sure what I was eating. The Reuben... It was poor enough that when my wife offered another bite I decided to chew on my nails. At times you couldn't tell the difference between the Reuben and the fries. Mid-week breakfast at Zach's Restaurant. I called ahead to make sure they were serving breakfast. We were the only diners. What a luxury. Blueberry pancakes were so tasty. My friend called them kinda donut-like. Scrambled eggs, bacon and side of hash brown completed my meal. Coffee tasted rich. Servers attentive and accommodating to our requests. HOWEVER, I ordered a full rack of ribs. After 44 ounces of beer...I was ready. Part of ordering ribs is the mystique about the ribs potentially coming straight off the smoker. Hot. Juicy. Delicious. These ribs were COLD! Straight from the fridge. A 2nd grader could have warmed them up in a microwave and I'd have been fooled after those beers. BUTT...Zach's managed to hire a line cook or chef who didn't bother to check what was going out to the customer. I sent them back and just ordered bread pudding...which is always awesome. As well as, one of the worse fish (halibut) and chips I've had, mostly batter & old, previously frozen fish, they said halibut so I guess I have to take their word. My husbands chicken carbonara was horrible, was more like creamy cheese soup with some pasta shells with over done, tough chicken... he was ill all night & next day. & still recuperating. When we called to speak with management we spoke with an incredibly rude Cathy Schulz, who was condescending, antagonistic & defensive immediately. At no time did she offer an apology or apathy. This place has a classy atmosphere with two options for your dining experience, the lounge or traditional restaurant. I'd recommend leaving the kids at home, as this is a bit more upscale, especially by Fairbanks standards. If you're looking for a classy place to get an awesome meal and don't mind a higher than usual price tag, you won't be disappointed. I came to Zach's with my husband and a friend about two weeks ago. The seafood selection is very popular, and as I ate the salmon I found out why. I believe this was the first dining experience I had while in Fairbanks where I cleaned my plate. I hear the steaks at Zach's are phenomenal as well. I would recommend it to family and friends, and suspect I will eat here again soon. read more

We are on a tour with almost 50 friends on a visit to Alaska on land than following up with a sea cruise. The first night we stayed at a hotel (Sophie Station Suite) in Fairbanks, then since we were so exhausted by a late arrival last night - 1:30 AM with a breakfast gathering at 7 AM; elected with 4 friends to stay and eat at Zachs - in the hotel. We were a bit apprehensive coming into the restaurant, especially since there were several students from Jamaica serving water and trying to help - yet once our waiter - Jimmie showed up things looked up. Both my wife and I had Bacon Wrapped Bacon with Pacific Black Cod with Newburg Sauce with . All I can say we both ordered Coconut White Rice and it was fantastic. Although the wait staff tried, they were unable to salvage our visit to Zach's. There were 6 people in our party and I had called ahead to make sure they were able to accommodate us. I was assured they could. We arrived and it took a while to get seated as there didn't appear to be a host or hostess seating people. We waited over 15 minutes to get water; and then only two of our party were given water before the person left with the pitcher. After another ten minutes of watching him provide other tables with water, I went to the area they kept the pitchers and started pouring the rest of the table water. He rushed over and apologized. Our waiter finally came over to take our order; apologizing and saying they were short-staffed that night. After over an hour of waiting to get our meals I finally flagged down the nice man giving everyone water and asked about our meals. The waiter came over and said there was an issue in the kitchen and it would be right out; it took another 15-20 minutes. Most of the meals were okay. Two of us got the Thai Beef salad and it was not god. The salad part was fine but the beef was unseasoned and over cooked. What disappointed us most was that not once did a manager appear on the floor. The waitstaff really was doing their best, but they certainly weren't getting any support from the manager. I believe it was a drink special, and the bartender messed up the first one (she knew it, asked me to try it, and let me keep it anyway while she remade another), but the second attempt was phenomenal. Their rib-eye steak was cooked properly but inedible. Apparently their idea of seasoning is salt and nothing else. It was so salty I couldn't eat it. Maybe that is their way of getting customers to order more beverages from the bar, but considering the wait staff was missing in action, that would have been impossible. Landed in Fairbanks hungry for dinner and found this place on Yelp. Glad I noted that it's in a hotel otherwise I would have missed it. It has the "hotel restaurant" feel. The staff was helpful and let us grab dinner before their Valentine's Day reservations. I ordered pasta and my husband ordered a burger. The pasta was good with fresh veggies.
