It just really gets under my skin to pay $6 for bread when I've paid $23 for a main course that should include it. It's good bread but I feel ripped off every time. And a bourbon and coke is like $10 so be warned. The seafood pasta was good, but that tiny spec at the top rim of the bowl is the shrimp. I could put two of them on a quarter without lapping over the side. I didn't see any scallops at all. Lots of fish though. Garden salad, peach crisp and coffee all pretty good. Update, overall review increased to 4 stars after my 20th meal. (Im at Sophies a lot.). I have lots of really good meals, most things on the menu, all quite good. Service depends on who is on shift and how busy they are, as you'd expect.

Fred calamari in a take out container $12

Since I was staying at the hotel, I ordered my meal to go back to my room. I did sit in the lounge while I waited for my order. The lounge is very nicely decorated and would be excellent for an intimate meal. There is a full bar available with a large variety of wines available. The staff was very nice and professional. Offered me a water while I waited for my meal which came out within 5 minutes. First, I ordered the calamari from the small plates menu. It was crispy outside and cooked just right. It was served with cocktail sauce and a remoulade sauce and lemon slices. I also ordered the Alaska Fish and Chips. Three pieces of cod, battered and fried. The coating was soaked in grease which was disappointing. The fries, chips, were overcooked and hard. The coleslaw was not to my taste. Perhaps this was a fluke. I've read other reviews and other dishes are spot on and delicious.

Went thinking it was a restaurant, but the restaurant was not open but Zach's Express was. It is a bar that serves the full menu. The lighting is darker and they have smaller 2-3 top tables. The food was good. I had the Taquitos which were large with great flavor. The jalapeño honey was nice foe dipping.

This is like a secret restaurant, tucked away inside Sophie's Station. Tiny bar area, but still a cozy atmosphere overall. We had craft IPA beer on tap, was delicious! 12, 16, or 22 oz! Ordered the hummus app, was curious when it came with a salsa and a honey mustard but when you put all of it on a pita chip it is an amazing combination of flavors. I had chicken carbonara for an entree, so good. The chicken and marinara was perfect, on top creamy sauce with tortellini. The only thing that was disappointing was the service. The waitresses were a little gruff, poor appearance, and they didn't care much when we mentioned that the cup of soup I ordered never came. Would still come back to try other dishes!

    Sour tomato bisque

Update: Came here for dinner and got the tomato bisque ($4) which had a slightly sour aftertaste, just like the expression on our lovely server's face. Got the Seared Salmon ($27) presentation with cantaloupe, mashed potatoes, buttermilk, topped with fried potato shavings. It was okay. If you are in the hotel this place is decent, but it's not great. Sometimes convenience supercedes seeking out quality. 9/24/2012 (2 stars) Yeaaaahhhhh, it didn't get any better. I came back and ordered another steak, rare, and it took the fine cooks 3 different tries to get it done right. How can one overcook a steak past seared rare? The waiter was nice and made sure it was done correctly since I had sent it back medium well the first time. The steak had a cute little stick in it that said rare! Must have meant rarely cooked right... Got a nice couple glasses of zin and a dirty martini with a touch too much vermouth. Send to a Friend Link to This Review Write an Update 4/19/2011(2 stars) Located on the second floor of Sophie's Station is Zach's Restaurant. Upon entering the interior gives a feel of casual elegance with an air of expensive food. There are tables covered in linens, a lot of dark wood paired with cream colors, and a bar that sits in the corner of the restaurant. I think there was even a fire place. I ordered a rib eye, rare, that came with mashed potatoes, and steamed veggies. I ordered a French red wine that I don't even know how to pronounce, but was absolutely lovely to drink. I was disappointed in the steak, though tasty it was cooked medium instead of rare (ummm, HUGE DIFFERENCE in temperatures) and the server said he would let the cooks know. I mean, I even asked the guy beforehand how well the cooks cook their steaks and he said well, liar (or maybe they cook their steaks more on the well side than the rare, ar ar ar). I thought he should have made the attempt to take back the steak to recook to my specs, but apparently being a server is outside his skill set (also the steak was $36, so I should have got what I ordered). This might sound snarky, but he also had a bit o' 'tude with me upon my entering and making the mistake of sitting in his section. The veggies were cooked well, though the mashed potatoes had huge lumps of potato and were not very good.

    Big breakfast!

Mid-week breakfast at Zach's Restaurant. I called ahead to make sure they were serving breakfast. We were the only diners. What a luxury. Blueberry pancakes were so tasty. My friend called them kinda donut-like. Scrambled eggs, bacon and side of hash brown completed my meal. Coffee tasted rich. Servers attentive and accommodating to our requests. For instance, my friend asked to switch hot chocolate to coffee and they did so. Lovely snowy views and classical guitar music made this a lovely respite.

Great food, the open crab sandwich is super delicious!!! The creme smoke salmon soup is a bit too creamy but still delicious. Great service tok

Just came in again for my husband's birthday dinner. Everything was delicious. Hubby had the chicken carbonara and I had bacon wrapped scallops with Alaskan cod. Chicken carbonara was awesome, as always. Scallops weren't over cooked and the fish was moist. Also got the artichoke dip which was also a delight. Always have a good time at this place. It's quiet but still a casual ambiance. The wait staff come around just the right amount, not overbearing at all.

When we arrived, we found out that you'd need a reservation to dine in the main dining hall, so we ended up going to the Saloon side where we had to find our own seats. We sat near the pool table, and the chairs were super unstable. The staff were fine but clearly seemed busy and understaffed. It took a long time for them to bring us water and take our order. I tried flagging the waitress 2-3 times when she was passing by and felt very ignored especially as I've made eye contact with her a few times. We ended up ordering the fried seafood combo and the seafood chowder, and it ended up taking at least 20min to come out (even the soup). The dishes were all very salty and definitely needed a lot of water to go with the food. Overall, definitely not a place to go before a flight since you might not be able to get in and out very quickly, and the food was really just alright for the price. Perhaps the main dining room experience would be better but I still wouldn't recommend it given the food quality and service.

If he tries this crap again, I will keep on editing this until the end of time. Because he took $208 from me and gave me $.13 in product. I asked that man at the grill to cook me a piece of fish medium rare. He told me he would not. Matter of fact, I went down to the prime rib area where they were cutting off a piece of medium and I asked for medium rare. He tried cutting it off the same spot. I said that's not medium rare he said it was I said fine knowing well I was going to write this review. Now you wanna play the game if you respond to me and I respond you you go right ahead and we'll do this for the rest of time. But you don't ever wanna walk into this place and spend your money on this crap. The Alaska Salmon Bake in Fairbanks comes with a reputation that the food unfortunately cannot support. Both the salmon and the cod were cooked far past any reasonable standard -- reduced to a dry, flaking consistency closer to fudge than fresh fish, with none of the moisture, fat, or flavor that world-class Alaskan seafood deserves. When I requested that my salmon be prepared medium rare -- the correct preparation for fish of this quality -- I was flatly refused. This is a liability shield masquerading as a culinary policy. Alaska runs some of the finest wild salmon on earth through these waters, and to reduce it to the same overcooked fate you'd find at a casino buffet is nothing short of malpractice. Properly prepared salmon should be translucent and silky at the center, the fat still doing its work, with a clean sear on the outside. What was served bore no resemblance to that standard. Holland America books this excursion as a signature Alaskan experience. Travelers deserve to know that the fish -- the entire point of the meal -- is cooked without skill or care, and no accommodation is made for guests who know how it should be eaten. Skip this and find a Fairbanks restaurant willing to treat their product with respect. You don't get to go on top of my review without an alternate response to me. You people knew full well what you were doing and how you were doing it. I asked every person there to cook beef fish, medium rare everyone and then said absolutely not so you can go to hell. And if you want to keep on going, I got the rest of my life to make you my cause so go ahead make my day.

We ended up ordering beef noodle soup and the duck crepe, which both were surprisingly better than I expected. However, my only issue with the dishes were the veggies used, which was far from any Asian veggies since they used raw lettuce and it was very undercooked and had a slight bitterness that somewhat ruined the dishes for me. In a way I think the dishes might have tasted better without it although I appreciate the effort to add in some veggies. For the beef noodle soup, the broth and the meat was good and the egg noodle went well with it. My friend ordered the ramen version, and it was literally instant ramen noodles (not worth in my opinion). While you're able to dine in they operate more like a take out spot as all the utensils and boxes are using take out and disposable containers. Overall, not a bad spot if you're craving some Asian food.
