If you are staying at Princess Lodge in Fairbanks, I HIGHLY recommend you walk the 1/2 mile or so to this restaurant. Service was excellent, drinks (wine and beer) were good, and the food was quite tasty. Wife and I had the fried cod and one order was more than enough for the two of us. Light, flaky and not too oily. Fries were good as well meaning fresh, not sitting in a basket for hours. I had a chowder bowl which I'd definitely recommend. Wife had a side salad that she said was nice and fresh. Friends split the halibut and both mentioned it was very tasty and fresh. All in all, check it out. This evening after a day of touring The Large Animal Research Station (University of Alaska - Fairbanks) with Musk Ox, Reindeer and Wood Bison, and walking trough Pioneer Park, we drove to Chena's Alaskan Grill for dinner. Dinner by the banks of the Chena River in Fairbanks AK We saw this restaurant off the highway one morning on our way to Denali National Park but they are only open for dinner between 5:00p to 10:00p so we planned on dining here on our last evening in Alaska. The restaurant is located on the gentle banks of the Chena River on the grounds of the River's Edge Resort cottages. We didn't have any reservations but when we walked in we were led to a table promptly. The place had a casual and comfortable ambiance inside. There was a sign on the front door in relation to being short staffed posted but we had Nikolai as our server and we didn't feel neglected as he was very attentive to our table. Nice young man from Bulgaria. I had been craving for steak so I ordered the Grilled Rib-Eye while hubby got the Grilled Chicken Breast. The steak was 12-oz big smothered with shallots and mushrooms and red wine Demi glaze. Loved the sides of garlic mashed potatoes and veggies. This is one of those places that we knew was a tourist trap, but wanted to see the appeal anyway. We went in a little worried because recent reviews said service was non-existent, but it proved the opposite. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. The food was good. I think Alaska prices make it a little pricier than it typically would be. We wanted to try the salmon or halibut, but we are still new to fish and didn't want to dive head first, so we went with the seafood fettuccine as well as the elk meatloaf. My only complaint with the food was that my mashed potatoes were really cold. The rest of the meat and veggies were hot, but the potatoes even though they still tasted amazing; cold. The fettuccine was really good. There was large chunks of vegetables as well as good sized pieces of salmon, halibut, and shrimp. The house salad was a bit boring for the price. I think that could have used more toppings just because $10 is steep for just lettuce and a little bit of carrots. Otherwise, this was one of those places we have gone to and it was good, but nothing I need to return to. It wasn't bad, I just wouldn't have a reason to go back. Open till 10 on Sundays! Quite important since almost everything else closes at 9 in Fairbanks. Wonderful deck area next to the river, which catches the evening sun, however they closed it tonight because the weather was sketchy (wind, rain). Food was presented quickly, and we felt it was decent. The salmon was a touch over cooked, and the Caesar needed more salad dressing. The croutons came from a bag, and tasted a touch stale. Both the salmon and my hubs cheddar burger tasted char-grilled, which we loved. The creme brûlée didn't use real vanilla beans and also used canned whipped cream (!!). Service was adequate. Indoor ambiance was so-so. The tables felt a bit crowded. The floors weren't being swept of leftover food/crumbs. Takeaway: definitely try to get a table out on the deck! Chena's has a good selection of beers on draft, wine by the glass or bottle, or cocktails ($11+ each). Apparently they're also offering house made mojitos & sangria. Strike two - out of the wine we wanted on the menu! Strike 3 - order their onion soup (which they had the first time) of the menu. 20 minutes later they said they didn't have onion soup! We had a group of us come in and were greeted and sat quite quickly. Everyone on the group of seven got appetizers, we tried every one. To sum up that portion, none of them were good. The artichoke dip was very thick, had very few and over cooked crisps. For the main meal I got the ribeye and it was majority fat. I ordered medium rare and they cooked it properly and flavor was not bad, slightly salty. Poor cut of meat. Service kept up well. Out of the whole group, no one liked their meals. The best dinner we had in Alaska. It was so delicious that we ordered again . It was Father's Day so they have special menu. We ordered NY steak, lobster ravioli and pistachio crush halibut. We have 2 adults and 2 kids. They hauled them in a minutes so we ordered another NY steak and halibut to be satisfied. The halibut is so moist. It's served with wild rice and walnuts. The NY steak was so awsome and paired with garlic potatoes. The lobster ravioli is very awsome too! read more

Dined here 2 months ago and had a great experience, the food was amazing. Went recently and the food was absolutely terrible. The meatloaf was over cooked and dried out. Crab cakes were okay but did not have a lot of flavor. The rice pilaf accompanying the crab cakes tasted of old beef broth left in the pan overnight. The waiter did his best, he was nice. The last waitress we had was also amazing, found out she quit due to management which is a total disappointment. read more
