Sorry to say, we had zero star service from one of our previously preferred local joints. My wife and I sat down at the bar on Saturday night and were completely ignored by the bartender. There was no welcome, and he seemed to go out of his way to not make eye concast. We sat down next to the taps, so there is no way he could have missed seeing us enter. After 5 minutes of being ignored, watching him serve other clients, futz with bills and tabs with his back to us, get ice from right in front of us, but not look up, we got up an walked out. I'll update Yelpers in a year or so as to whether their service has improved...one year is about the next time I will set foot in the place. Until then, you can find us at the Landmark in Livingston, where we are always greeted and appreciated. read more

In the mood for a great burger tonight, and I couldn't imagine a better place than Zagursky's Bar & Grill, (AKA Z's) on Mt. Pleasant Ave. in Whippany, NJ. As usual, their generously sized 1/2 pound California burger was cooked to a perfect medium; juicy in the middle and crispy on the outside, with a pile of crispy bacon , lettuce, tomato, and pickle, served wuth a Keiser style roll. It was a handfull of deliciousness. Definitely one of my favorite burgers anywhere. I also ordered a large basket of french fries; expertly prepared, crunchy on the outside with a light, fluffy inside. Also a must have when at Z's is their soft, hot hot pretzel, with their super hot, clear your sinuses mustard. Zargursky's in one of those iconic, old school, classic, neighborhood joints that goes back to 1945 and are quickly disappearing. Very neat vibe with lots of TVs for the space size. Definitely can't seat more than 40 people or so but I'm sure standing room can get that number higher. Service was very good and friendly. The food is very good, limited menu with about 10 items to order but if you like bar type food this is the spot for you. Fun atmosphere for a guys night or meal. A nice local bar, good food, good service, and well-made cocktails, and a decent selection of beer on tap and bottled/canned. Not a ton of seating, but we have been there for lunch on several occasions, and I have not had trouble getting a seat. read more

First time @ this place. Bwhat a gem of a "Dive Bar" This place has been here since 1945. There are only q0 items on the menu.....with no prices. Had the wings ( which were hand- dipped and fried perfectly. Also had the Bacon Cheesburger. It was good, but the wings were incredible. So I've been coming to Z's for years with my son and we sit on the restaurant side but we always are treated like family and have a great meal. I had the California burger for the first time tonight and it might have been the best burger I've had. Macro brew pints for $5, cheeseburgers cooked perfectly & served on a good roll for $8 and just $2.50 more for a side of fries, also friendly people -- Zagursky's is an a-ok neighborhood place. Don't expect craft beer, the 5 taps were Shocktop, Stella, Bass, Bud, Bud light. Left half is the bar, right half is tables with service. If you like low-key divey places you'll love it. I like divey places if I can chat at a reasonable volume, maybe on a quiet night Z's is the place. Unfortunately the noise level was ruinous when we visited on a busy Saturday night, conversation was flat-out difficult. To boot they were laughably understaffed with just one bartender and one waitress (working so hard she couldn't talk) for the entire place so everything took a while. If it's fried, you're probably safe :) Chicken wings here are basically battered fried chicken served dry with little cups of Frank's red hot sauce and bleu cheese dressing, a dozen for $11. Incredibly hot (thermally), very good fried chicken and the *parts* certainly are the wings, just didn't meet my expectation of buffalo wings. As others have noted the onion rings and fries are very, very good; ours arrived too hot to eat. My dining companion's burger was cooked medium to her spec, the roll was fresh, topped with a pallid unripe slice of tomato, very basic but also crazy cheap. Also serves bar pies, about $8 for a smallish pizza on a notably crisp crust with forgettable sauce and toppings. You should ignore them and focus on the burgers and fries. Vegetarian rating: 1 star bcos your options are greasy kid food: grilled cheese, cheese pizza, mozzarella sticks, french fries. Our pints were a tad flat, not completely devoid of fizz, but served without any trace of foam and just a little light on the bubbles. Aside from what people say about it being a dive, I look at it from the perspective of the food. The menu is typical of a bar/grill with burgers, sandwiches, wings, etc. The beer on tap is standard with nothing shouting out craft beers. I had the California cheese burger with bacon. My friend had the bacon cheese burger with grilled onions, and a side of fries. Both of the burgers were cooked perfectly; pink and juicy in the middle. They were big burgers; my friend had to cut it in half! They give you plenty of bacon and they're crispy. The fries are battered and seasoned perfectly. If you like spicy, ask for their hot mustard. Came back this week for some bites before a wedding and asked for patron on the rocks they only have jose cuervo, and charged $12 for a 4 ounce drink of it!!!!! LMAO this is NOT NEW YORK CITY nor should Jose Cuervo ever cost $12. As well as tito's- i was a little blown away it was hard not to laugh at the price. This hole in the wall has great service and great food. This is one of those places that Yelper's get right because no, its not a 5 star restaurant, but in the $ dive bar realm, this place is a gem. I gave the wait staff a tremendous amount of grief, like I typically do, and they dished it back. When the food came, they were proactive in saying "I know I owe you mustard but can I get you anything else?" rather than leaving me guessing if they or I forgot. I've been coming here for years. It's a bar ladies and gentlemen. The food happens to be really good. Taco Tuesday has been a hit for awhile now, so much so they sell out sometimes. The pizza plain and well done is fantastic when you want a quick bar pie. The burgers are consistently good and I happen to really like the wings. It's a bar. You can have a conversation with just about anyone in the place, including KP (owner). A lot of people reviewing Z's should stick to the nice places and the umbrella drinks. Z's is old school. Even if I didn't like something one night or someone was having a bad day, I always go back. I've had great times, food and drinks at Z's. The only reason I didn't give it five is because of how they make their wings. Dry with no sauce unless you ask for it then just a side of cold Frank's Red Hot. One of the best burgers I have come across. Great meat and grilled with that crispy crust. It's a "dive" bar for sure. With friendly people until they've had a little too much. Then, it can get "too much" to stay. And to get to it, you have to either be in the "know" or be patient in finding the place. My only issue is the bun, which I think is too thick and heavy. It was a more of a hoagy type bread. I found myself pulling off pieces of it and leaving it on the side but I must say, it;s worth having that burger again. Finally, the value for the quality is a real big plus. read more
