I LOVE THIS GEM! It is the best you can get in the suburbs. The portions are a bit smaller than what I am use to but price is more affordable than other brunch places. On Saturdays, it gets super pack so make sure to come early! Or prepare to wait at least 30 mins for a table and 30 minutes for food! I just want to add that... A true neighborhood gem. We have been going there for over 20 years. Great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Can get a little busy, but the atmosphere will chill you out along with the delicious food. Prices are reasonable given the quality. read more

My husband and I went to Zakes Café for the first time on restaurant week. It was packed out of the door and I can't say that they have a formal reservation system because we had a reservation for 7 PM and we weren't seated until 7:40 PM. But the food and service definitely made up for the wait. The restaurant week menu is different than the normal menu but we had a really great calamari salad and duck flat bread for appetizer, for entrée we had a risotto and filet mignon and for dessert we enjoyed some tasty cakes. We actually had double dessert because they gave us complimentary dessert to make up for the long wait. You can drive pass this place ten times and wouldn't know it's a restaurant - that's how unassuming and low key the place is. First impression walking in - ummm are we at the right place? Let's turn around, I think we're on someone's front porch. But then the closer you get to the front door the more apparent it is that you're at the right spot. Cool little place, the dining room is actually a living room and the servers look like residents. It's a different vibe. Anyway I got the blackberry peach pie with caramel drizzle as we only went there for dessert. It hit the spot. Big chunks of warm peach with four or five blackberries on the inside and a flaky sweet crust. I definitely have to come back for lunch or dinner and see what else they have to offer. We were greeted promptly and there was no wait. The drink taker came over and my son ordered a large juice, but it seemed small for a large. The gentleman who took order wasn't smiling or pleasant. No English muffins or bagels. I ordered the Tex max omelette...I've never had ingredients not mixed in with the egg, but instead a whole piece of ham within the fold of the omelette and the other ingredients inside that. My son got chocolate chip pancakes and they weren't inside, just sprinkled on top and only about 10 at that. We waited quite a while for the check. This is a small place I've been for brunch a few times and just to grab a piece of cake sometimes as well. It's an old stone building with plenty of character and charm and it has easy parking right on premesis. Outstanding, even on a busy Mothers day brunch crunch. Been here a few times now and always pleased with meal, service and atmosphere. The place was so busy, but the hostess was very attentive, seated people as quickly as they rose from the table to leave (turnover was awesome). Highly recommend this establishment. I've been looking for a nice brunch spot that's not located in Philly. Someone recommended I try Zakes. I was very happy with my decision. As you walk in, there's a bakery to the left that sells cakes and cupcakes. The restaurant itself is small and brightly lit with a lot of natural light. I ordered the crab, mushroom and cheddar omelet minus the mushrooms along with the honey and lemon pancakes. The omelet was delicious. They use real crab in the omelet, not that imitation stuff. The pancakes were delicious. There is a sprinkle of sugar, which has a hint of lemon. The pancakes are thin, which is actually how I like my pancakes. To top it off, it's not accompanied by syrup. Instead, you're given Zakes' homemade caramel sauce. If you decide to visit Zakes, keep in mind the parking lot is fairly small. read more

Came on a Sunday afternoon for brunch after driving by many a time and seeing a 4 star rating on yelp. Seated immediately. It's a packed and family friendly spot, so a bit noisy. My dude decided on a breakfast burrito and I the crab cake Benedict. I wasn't really wowed with either. The "burrito" was sizable, but basic and kind of bland. Same for the Benedict...meh. Deep fried instead of broiled crab, hollandaise without any zip. Their "home-fries" were potatoes cut in the *shape* of home fries, but ultimately just deep fried like a french-fry with no griddle panache or onions. The service was a bit frenetic. Our table was visited probably five times by four different friendly and efficient servers -- several of which were for coffee refills. In retrospect I wish I had guzzled another cup or two since each coffee was $3... sounds like a shruggable expense, but at the end of it all -- $34 plus tip for a breakfast I can't really complain about, but am not in any rush to repeat. read more

Went to Zakes for breakfast Saturday with a couple of coworkers. Sssshhhh... don't tell the wife I went without her. With the new year Zakes hasn't changed a thing. They are still delivering delicious quality dishes that are amazing! DJ was visiting Zakes for the first time. He ordered the French toast and was very pleased. Rich a regular at Zakes ordered the pancakes and bacon. I was prepared to order a crab omelette when I noticed the Vietnamese Benedict. I ordered the Benedict with home fries. The home fries are fried to a perfect golden brown and are seasoned well. The Vietnamese Benedict was awesome! The poached egg was nice and runny. The ground sausage patty had a touch of heat on it and the ginger sauce pulled it all together. This might be my go to breakfast meal for sometime to come! read more

We just had a wonderful dinner at Zakes. Service was pleasant and relaxing You feel like friends at this restaurant. You couldn't ask for any better service. Orders were taken, courses came out promptly but not rushed. All with a smile. Menu is interesting and ambitious. We had the carrot ginger soup and the avocado salad. Our entrees were cod with artichokes and spinach and the center pork chop with brussel sprouts and potato gratin. Seasonings were wonderful and sauces were delicious. I cook so I like to order something I couldn't easily make at home. Salads and vegetables are fresh and the dressing is perfect. Even the bread is homemade. And then there is dessert. Zakes is a bakery as well and their summer shortcake and cheesecake were excellent. You can take something home with you or order a cake for a special event too! And they serve breakfast and lunch, all quality menus. Their pancakes and chicken salad are popular. Iced tea and coffee are always good. This restaurant is byob so you can bring a favorite wine or beer. Parking is convenient. We come here often but this is my first review of Zakes. I could go every week. Bravo to Zakes! read more

I ordered the honey lemon pancakes taking the advice of other yelpers and I'm sooooo glad I did! These pancakes were perfectly made with the perfect amount of fluffiness and slightly crispy edges. The lemon flavor is not overpowering at all. A few drizzles of caramel was all that was needed because the flavor of the pancakes held on its own. I'm very picky with pancakes since it's an easy dish to make but these went beyond my expectations. It's a perfect serving size and I finished it feeling satisfied. But for those who are extremely hungry, I would order a side dish. They stop making breakfast items around 12ish. Coffee was average. Walked on to meet a friend for brunch and we were sat almost immediately despite it being pretty busy. Service was pretty quick and the food was great. I had the butter pecan pancakes with a side of the chicken sausage and I really enjoyed it. Server did not come back to really check on us however which would have been beneficial because the orange juice had pulp and I would have been able to tolerate it if I had a straw but because I didn't, I didn't drink much of it. My wife and I were looking for something DIFFERENT. We found it at Zakes. However I have reservations that I'll explain below: First the things that need improving IMHO- If you are handicapped (I am) or in a wheelchair, access is NOT EASY ( after a ramp up to a short landing there are 5 stairs plus another one leading into the restaurant. If there was another wheelchair friendly entrance, the signs are not present /not visible or we did not see it) & after entering, the dining room is TIGHT (LOTS of tables). The service was average- no greeting by our server, no explanation of specials or anything on the menu (which is very interesting and varied in a extremely good way) Pricing was expensive for what we ordered- Our bill totaled $50 That purchased an omelette, french toast, bacon, chicken sausage, coffee for 2, granola and a fruit cup. We don't mind paying for good food, but when we do, we expect a WOW factor- unfortunately there was none. The parking lot here is small, so when you end up parking somewhere that doesn't really seem like a spot, you'll think, "I'm going to be waiting forever to get a seat." But that's just not the case. They keep the crowd moving by providing great service. We sat and ordered our food inside of 10 minutes and I would say our food was out and ready to be enjoyed within another 10. I've only ever been here for lunch and agree with the assessment that it's very much a "ladies who lunch" crowd, but there is a fairly large group of foodie business people from the nearby corporate park sprinkled in. Today for lunch I had the quiche that's paired with a side salad. Delicious. I ended my meal with a slice of key lime pie. Yesterday I stopped in for a cupcake (it was one of those days) and they didn't disappoint. For $2.50, I satisfied my craving with a delicious cupcake to go (just right, not too sweet) and didn't overdo it. Just right. Needless to say, the sweets case is not to be neglected on your next visit. One little thing -- this isn't a good place for a business lunch where you plan to get work done. Stopped here for lunch today with my mom and sister. It's cozy, nice, and loud enough that everyone can have a nice conversation without feeling like anyone is being disturbed. I had a hard time deciding what to get. There were easily 10 things I would have gladly ordered. Between the daily specials and the regular menu, there is definitely something for everyone. I ended up choosing one of the special sandwiches - a turkey Reuben with Gouda. The sandwich was delicious and came with mixed greens and homemade potato salad. My sister ordered the crab cake sandwich, and said it was very good. My mom ordered the lamb salad (an interesting addition to a menu) and also enjoyed it. We sat directly next to the baked goods, so we absolutely had to try some after lunch. Again, a tough time choosing. We ended up trying the carrot cake and a chocolate cake of some sort. If you put the word "cake" in the name of your business, then you had better be prepared to defend yourself. I will try your cake and I will revel in the opportunity to tear you down on the internet if you fail to deliver an exceptional experience. The only thing that I find sweeter than cake is the pain of others, as I often savor the flavor of a vitriol-laced review and the ensuing business lost from it(however minor that may be). That being said, Zake's Cakes & Cafe exceeded expectations. The triple chocolate mousse cake here is absolutely splendid. It was delicate, moist, and hit the bullseye in the sweetness department. It was really, really great. Brunch here rules. I recommend the seafood quiche, which contains crab, shrimp, slow roasted tomato & provolone. If that doesn't sound good to you, it is because 1. These items are forbidden in your diet 2. You did not read the last few sentences properly. Please re-read them. The mixed green salad served on the side with the quiche is a great complement to the crabby/eggy/seafoodyness. I also got to try the crabcake benedict. It was good. On the action-movie-parallel-satisfaction-scale, this is Terminator 2: Judgement day when I was a little kid who wasn't supposed to watch R rated movies but somehow got to watch it at a friend's house and felt like I was a serious renegade breaking the rules. read more

Tony and I went out to dinner and then decided to track down something sweet. A quick review of Yelp pointed us toward Zakes and their cute little bakery counter. We heard cafe and assumed it was coffee shop-ish, we didn't realize it was a restaurant. But luckily, the staff were SO sweet and accommodating, they let us commandeer one of their little two-seater cafe tables just for dessert and coffee. I had the chocolate peanut butter cupcake. The chocolate cake was moist and delicious. I've had many a chocolate cake in my time and this was one of the best. Chocolate cake can so easily turn dry and this wasn't the case at all. Scrumptious. The icing was SO peanut butter-y and sugary and to die for. And to top it off, there was a little heart-shaped chocolate candy on top. I'm not sure if this is the norm or because Valentine's Day is coming up but either way, I'm in. Tony had some sort of chocolate decadence cake with mousse and chocolate cake ... awesome. Both desserts were really fresh, not stale at all like so many other places. Clearly, dessert is the highlight of a meal here based on how many diners made their way over to the mouth watering dessert case to admire the delicacies. And it was worth it :-) It's harder to get enthusiastic about brunch in the suburbs than in the city, though Exton has proven me wrong multiple times. But in and around 19002? Well, I think that our brunch places get really old really fast when you least expect them to, I wish it weren't so :-(. But Zake's has revived the brunch scene for my sisters and me. Everything was reasonably priced for the amount and quality of food that we ordered: Crab cake benedict (special) Scrambled egg sandwich with cheese and bacon Onion, spinach, and brie quiche ...with the accommodating sides, of course, and we had a really balanced, hearty, and, well, good quality brunch :-) This was also a sentimental experience just because my sisters and I haven't hung out together since the summertime, so hooray for bonding over food!
