Across the highway from San Marcos factory outlet stores is Zaxby's , all things chicken. It's been open a few weeks so everything is shiny brand new, the employees are happy, smiling and courteous- hopefully these employee traits will remain as Zaxby's gets to be an older establishment. They have chicken strips, chicken salads ( or Zalads..they like to through in the "Z " whenever they can ), and chicken sandwiches. No whole pieces of fried chicken. It reminds me of a Chik-Fil-A...you can have your healthy version or you can opt for deep fried , not greasy,so you feel like you are misbehaving on that diet. You can order online, they do catering as well. We ordered a Cobb Zalad , it was big enough to share and had a generous portion of wonderful deep fried strips, with a slice of buttery Texas toast. The decor is fun and they have this great self serve digital coke machine ( of course with other flavors besides coke..) I really liked Zaxby's and plan on eating here again when I visit the outlet shops. read more

The Chicken tenders are good. I got it to go and they were still crispy when I got home. Fries are good. Also enjoyed the Zaxby's sauce as well as their sweet tea. It's Worth a try. This place is great! Had it for the first time the other day, and I'm not usually a fan of fried chicken places like Caines or Bushes. This place was different. The service was very good! The cashier was very friendly and helpful when I told her it was my first time eating there. She suggested #3 chicken sandwich with lettuce and their sauce with fries and a drink, and that's what I got. The chicken was moist and seasoned well. I didn't have to drown it in the sauce to get flavor which is what I have to do at Caines. The fries were plentiful and seasoned just the way I like it. The sweet tea was perfect, really sweet but not too sweet. I suggest getting an order of potato chips! My friend got some and we ended up splitting it. They were crispy on the outside but still soft inside, and once again... Seasoned perfectly. I will definitely be back for more. Probably going to try out their milkshakes. Don't eat here. The management obviously does not care about the cleanliness of this restaurant. Nasty tables, trash on floors. FOOD on floors! We have eaten at a lot of Zaxbys and this one was disgusting. We got there at 1:30 - after the lunch rush - and stayed there at least 30 minutes. No one was cleaning the tables and MOST tables and booths were grimy and in need of a good cleaning. Will not eat there again. read more

I was so excited to finally find a Zaxbys that's wasn't in Georgia. The staff were super friendly and really knew the menus. The food well cooked and seasoned. Although they put too much ice in cups (but who doesnt). The inside is very clean and a great atmosphere. The lemonade is very good especially when it doesn't taste like it's powdered lemonade it is actual lemonade. read more

I'd never heard of Zaxby's, and because my kids wanted chicken tenders, we decided to give it a try. The kids meals were fine; exactly what you'd expect from a kids meal. What my wife and I did not anticipate was the kids meals being better than the buffalo wings we ordered. These "buffalo wings" are more like over-fried chunks of breading (little to no discernible chicken) doused in flavored sugar (terrible wing sauce). At least the wing sauce would be more palatable if they used their chicken tenders as wings, but whatever those little bread nuggets were were simply hard and terrible tasting. I don't intend to return, and I advise anyone who sees this to go elsewhere, or enter with incredibly low expectations. read more

Chicken tenders are small, so order one or two more than you're thinking. They're the size of one and a half McDonald's chicken nuggets. Horrible service and slow is an understatement. We decided to dine in on a Sunday at 2:15pm. My wife and I ordered salads. There was not an empty table in the place and only about 25% of the tables had their food. That should of been a sign to head out but we already paid so we decided to wait. After waiting 35 minutes and still no food the manager came out and was talking to people around us who had their food. He was chatting with the people next to us asking how everything was. They said the food was OK but they had to wait over 30 minutes for their order. His response..."Have you ever been to a Zaxby's when they first open? If you had you would know that my staff is working on two days training and they're really not that good yet" This went on for one more table I heard him talk to. After waiting for 45 minutes I went up to the counter and asked how much longer I should expect to wait for a salad. The cashier responded with "I don't know, whenever we call your number it will be ready" I asked for a refund and headed out. I know that one should give a restaurant the benefit of the doubt around opening weekend but the service sucked, the wait was unreasonable, and the manager was a complete jackass. I had a chicken strip sandwich, which was really good the chicken strips were great and juicy and the Texas toast was nice and buttered. They have several different buffalo sauces to choose from whether it is mild to extremely spicy. The fries that accompany were well seasoned and nicely cooked. The wings and things my gf got was equally as good, it came with boneless wings, chicken tenders, fries, and Texas toast. I had Cane's b4 I ever tried Zaxby's, and I put down the salt shaker years ago...... But to me, my BFF and my wife, everything tasted very salty.... The fries were damn good, not overly salty, but the chicken strips were just way too salty for our taste.... Not sure if this is normal, I'll try some of the hot wings next time. Zaxby's this was my first time visiting this NEW establishment and I found the owner/manager to be extremely RUDE, DEGRADING to his employees, and once I got my food home A BUG was found in my salad at dinner time while consuming what seemed to be a decent salad with good seasoning. A good comparison of Zaxby's would be comparing it against Raising Canes Chicken fingers. A better comparison would be to refer you to an old episode of the Simpsons. One day, Bart discovers he has an evil twin named Hugo that for years, has been living in the attic. Hugo is dull, dimwitted, lumbering, and lives on buckets of fish heads that Homer feeds him every night. Never mind that Bart had never noticed the surgery scar by his ribs or that Homer has been dutfully clmbing the attic stars every night for 10 years with buckets of fisheads, How did Bart not know Hugo was up there? Anyways, ...So in this example, Canes would be Bart and Zaxby's would unfortunately be Hugo. Zaxby's strips are half as thick or as long as Canes. They were over cooked and a little dry. Their sauce is exactly the same as Canes. Zaxby's does have more options like wings, salads and shakes. Those are just aight. I want to mention that the Zaxby's in San Marcos was messy. Tables were not bussed. Food on the floor. The restrooms had not been cleaned all day, It was the middle of the day when I visited, so they were not busy.That seems like a minor thing, but I have never gone to a Canes where they missed those kind of details. Zaxby's was just...ok. I'd stop in again if I was driving by, but I would not go out of my way to look for it. Canes, may have a limited menu but they do one thing and they do it right. While shopping at the outlets, my girlfriend and I noticed a new place called Zaxby's. We decided to try it out and on the way in asked a customer how her meal was. She said it was okay. We were hesitant in going in after her answer but we still tried it. We should have listened. $19 for two combos plus drinks. Your sides are cole slaw and fries with not an option to change them plus drinks were an extra charge. Who eats cole slaw in Texas? Only one place to get ice and your fountain drink so you had to wait in line. The batter on the chicken was fine, something you would find on fish so your mind plays tricks on you. Am I eating chicken or fish? Haha. Employees took up all the good seats in the dining room. They all sat at 7 separate tables texting or listening to music. The dining decor is above average but the majority of the table tops were greasy, dirty. Save yourself some money, go to Chicken Express. Their combos include drinks and you get to pick your sides for $6 cheaper for two. Or wait for Cane's Chicken, they will be opening in August (at the old Arby's location) and their chicken is awesome...and cheaper as well. read more

The food is always good when I come here. The majority of the time it's always hot and fresh. The only thing that I hate about coming to this location is the lack of tables to sit and eat at. There are more two seater tables than there are tables for parties with more than 2 people. The tables are always dirty. They never give too much attention to the dining area. One time we went there when our youngest was a newborn and they had the fans on in the dining area. We went around about 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't busy at all and there were about two other couples eating along with us inside. The ceiling fans are blowing so fast and so hard I went and asked if there was any way that they could either turn them down to a lower setting or turn them off the girl who I asked told me that there is nothing that they could do about it because if they turn one of all of them would turn off and that they had no control over that. After given that answer we got a refund and walked out because there was too much air being blown on our newborn. They get three stars for the taste of the food. read more

We stopped by this restaurant on our car ride back up to Dallas from San Antonio. I've seen a Zaxby's in The Colony, but never had an opportunity to try it. It was pretty good, nothing extraordinary, especially for the price. I felt that the cost did not compare to the amount of food that you received, it was a bit high.
