I stopped for lunch at noon and the place was fairly empty. This is a small-town diner with a large menu. My server came right over and took my order. I went with the special, Hot Turkey with mashed potatoes and a bowl of split pea with ham soup. She brought my drink and soup right away. The soup was really hot, but I could tell just by looking at it that I was going to like it. It was thick and full of ham chunks. You could totally tell this was a homemade soup, it was one I would get whenever it was on the menu, VERY GOOD. After the soup, she brought me my meal, and everything looked good. The turkey was hand carved, but it looked dry to me. Good thing there was gravy on the meat because it really needed it. The mashed potatoes were good, just lacking in flavor. They really needed salt added. Overall, I would come back, there were enough good things about this place (service, prices and homemade food) to deserve a second chance. I will be back. read more

We stopped for a late lunch. Lemon chicken rice soup and Greek Salad with house-made Greek dressing was absolutely delicious! Very generous portions. My "cup" of soup was a regular bowl size, and the salad was huge. Have lunch for tomorrow and truly looking forward to it. Great waitress as well. I thought I would try the homemade onion rings. They look delicious when they came to the table but when I bit into it I could taste fish and french fries so they use the same grease for everything I didn't even finish the onion rings I ate one and that was enough for me. I don't care for the sauce that's very runny there's no meat in it so again another thing I won't get. The service was okay but as soon as I got my food I got the bill. I like omelettes but read my review about the omelette restaurant in town and figured you can't go wrong with a Coney Island restaurant. It turned out as expected. I got my egg white veggie omelette and it had cheese in it. I had the choice of hashbrowns, American fries or grits. I got the American fries and they were large and good. I also got rye toast and it was good. My friend got a breakfast special with hashbrowns, eggs and choice of bacon or sausage. He got the sausage. Zefs is a local dive with great food from breakfast to dinner for a reasonable prices. Omelettes , homemade soups, gyros, and of course coney dogs. I just had a special which was an 8 oz NY strip that was excellent. Flat top and booth seating. Moderately clean restrooms. Service is normally good. I have and will return. read more

My husband and I have gone here for dinner a few times. Waitstaff is always friendly and the food is always good. However, our most recent visit was very disturbing. About halfway through dinner, the male cook began yelling obscenities toward one of the waitresses. It didn't just happen once, but two or three times. Everyone could hear what was happening because everyone turned to look in that direction. There was a family there, including children. The waitresses said this is not the first time this has happened and that the owner is just as guilty of the same type of behavior. How completely unprofessional, never mind the fact that it is unacceptable to treat women with such abuse and disrespect. Our waitress said it was her first night back and she will not be returning. Ordered the Tuesday special, two loose meat burgers with choice of fries or soup. I chose the cream of broccoli soup. When my soup came, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was a full "bowl" and not just a "cup". When I began to eat it, I was quickly disappointed, as it did not contain broccoli pieces, only what I would describe as "specks". I finished my soup and said nothing. When the loose meat "burgers" were delivered to the table, I saw two hotdog buns filled to overflowing with what appeared to be some type of chili sauce from a can. The waitress could tell from my face that this was not what I had expected and said to me, "Looks good, doesn't it? Everybody likes it." Another waitress informed her that many people have been under the impression that they were ordering some sort of "burger". I accepted the plate but was unable to eat any more than three or four bites and set it aside. When the waitress finally noticed, she returned and asked if I did not want this, I told her no and explained I had expected it to be a loose meat "burger", as it read on the daily special menu. She initially disagreed it said that, but then looked and agreed with me. She then quickly turned to the main menu and pointed out an item that said two loose meat "coneys", stating "there, see?" Realizing my displeasure of her attitude, she offered to take it back and asked if I would care for something else. I ordered a cheeseburger and ate it without complaint. read more

Usually love this place when we dine in! Got a carry out because we didn't feel like sitting in today. Got french toast, 1/2 order biscuits and gravy and a side of chili cheese fries and they told us 45 minutes. Showed up 45 minutes later and they said another 10. We waited 15 minutes and asked for our food and they said ANOTHER 10 on top of the 15 we just waited. Waited inside the restaurant for my togo for 30 minutes, might as well have dined in. The gyro meat had a funny taste and was way overcooked . The coneys were... Well coneys . Nothing to swear by i found better testing coneys at the corner store down the road. Used to drive 15 miles here to get a real Coney island experience. It was good and friendly service. I was there 2 weeks ago and my friend and I ordered cheese fries. Fries came, no cheese but a long nasty hair instead. Told the waitress she didn't say anything but took the fries. Brought new fries, no cheese again. Told her again she said nothing. Then she brought us cold nacho cheese in a cup! Never apologized or offered us a discount, nothing. I would have walked out if it wasn't for my friend. This place has taken a nose dive in service and quality. It won't stay open for much longer with that kind of experience. We eat at Zefs quite often. My husband loves the coneys on Tuesday. I think they are .99 cents. We went to Zefs for our anniversary, he's so romantic. I had the grilled cod with baked potato and salad, it was excellent. The dinner salad was huge, and very fresh. My husband had the chicken gyro with hand dipped onion rings. The onion rings are always perfect. The chicken gyro has a nice grill and Greek flavor. For desert we split the cheese cake. Its good. The service has always been fast and friendly, with Zef helping the girls serve. He comes out and asks how we are doing. He mentioned he goes to eastern market twice a week for his vegetables. Fair price, quality food and service. Show us a better restaurant in bay city!! Very few restaurants are consistent and usually if they are consistent, it is consistently bad. Not the case with Zef's. Always good, always fast. Breakfast is an experience, and you will always have more than enough to eat. I can not fully express my love of the breakfast skillets. I am impressed that they are featuring more and more ethnic specials: stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls, goulash, and the awe inspiring chicken lemon rice soup. Never been here besides breakfast, but as far as that goes they certainly need a lesson in how to cook eggs. Seems like if it's not scrambled or an omelette they can't get it right. I've also had raw sausage, and more recently the place has began to get dirty. The laminated menus are falling apart and are usually turning black from needing to be wiped off. Some of the servers are good, but there's a lack of helping each other out so when one is busy they tank all their tables while the other servers sit back and do nothing. Overall I like the food offered, but a little step up in the game would bring it up to par with other breakfast joints nearby. read more

Had a delivery order...both identical orders (2 piece French toast with 2 eggs and meat) with the exception of one of them needing an extra piece of French toast. Upon delivery, one order was rung up correctly and somehow, the other was rung up as 3 pieces of French toast with meat and a side of eggs. The basic 2-piece order was 4.95 and the other one was 6.50 + 2 for eggs...so that extra piece of French toast costs 3.55 more than the two piece with eggs and meat.
