Zen's Lobster Fried Rice
Lily L.

Went here one day while I was passing by Astoria and I have to say, this place was definitely upscale. I felt completely out of place in my tshirt and jeans, however the food did not disappoint. We got char siu bone marrow and it was definitely the highlight of the meal. The bone marrow was perfectly buttery soft and added to the depth of the already delicious char siu buns. We also got their zen lobster fried rice. Although it was definitely delicious as well, it wasn't my favorite. Another dish we tried was the wagyu crispy nigiri. Don't forget to get cameras out for this dish as they torch the wagyu at table side. We also tried the roasted pork belly. The pork belly was super tender however it was a little tough to eat as the crust of the pork belly was a little on the tough end. The servers were also very attentive, my friend and I definitely enjoyed ourselves. We paired everything with a nice glass of Cabernet.

Great, chill ambiance. Can be fitted for romantic/ family / friends type of vibe. Service staff was quite attentive, they check on us every 20 minutes or so, and asking if everything is ok. The dishes we got were tasty, though the pork belly skin was a bit sticky, can be stuck to your teeth great flavor and texture though. The decoration is the restaurant is hip and modern, also has this on the wall circle chair setting, perfect for Instagram photos.

The dinner at zen was very nice. The food itself was very tasty, although portions were a bit on the smaller size. The highlight of the night for me was the drink, I don't remember the name and can't find it on the menu but I closed a picture. Was SO refreshing and very well mixed. It was a bit warm in the restaurant, the front wall was open providing a bit of breeze but was sweaty through most of the meal

Babyyy babyyyy I love the customer service and the food here . I came here for my graduation dinner and ugh 10/10 I can't wait to go back. The passion fruit drink with the added prosecco amazing. You can get cute pics here because of the dim ambiance. The stuffed lobster so good. The veggie lo mein? Omg we ordered another round lol. The prawns? So good. I legit can just keep going . Just go okay. You won't regret it lol . Customer service was amazing can't wait to go back!

What a place!! The decor is 10/10. Sultry yet exciting. Beautiful art all over, different type of seating: table top, booth tables.. Service: our server Brianna was excellent and attentive. Food: fresh.. and delicious.. the chicken fried rice was 12/10. Veggies were firm and crunchy which I love. Orange chicken. Was moist yet crunchy and flavorful. Chicken wings were regular. Nothing to write home about, missing the flavor pop!! Would not get again. Drinks were a bit pricy but delicious.

My first time visiting zen Astoria, the ambiance is beautiful. Great for a date night or birthday. I attended a birthday dinner. It was a prefix menu Family style. You do get a lot of food and leave with leftovers . You can take a lot of pictures there the filet mignon and broccoli taste delicious and I love the lo mein. The dumplings was good as well and the sesame chicken chicken sat teas are usually my favorite at any restaurant that I go to that sells it, but this is actually my least favorite out of all the other restaurants that I have been to. I had a lychee martini which was OK and a strawberry lemon drop I didn't really like the drinks are different. They have an acquired taste if I will come back not really sure I have had better expensive Chinese food at other places.

We initially planned to go to a different restaurant but as we were waking by zen the music made us rethink our dinner choices for the night haha. Spontaneous adventures are always the start to a great night. Don't mind the cowgirl outfit, it's Halloween weekend. So the story goes like this, a cowgirl and Kim possible walked into Zen.. The host was super sweet. The place was pretty busy as expected for a Saturday night but we were able to be seated at the bar right away. The bartender was very attentive and the service was great ! The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is a 10/10. A sexy little date night spot..and in our case perfect for a girls night out. The crispy sushi was my fav. These quick bites leaves you hungry for more. The calamari to my surprise was amazing! Calamari is always a starter for my friends and I - it's been a while since I've had some that I enjoyed, so I wasn't expecting much here. I am so glad to say I was pleasantly surprised. 10/10 I went home and raved about to my sibling because they need to try these! The lo mein was tasty and the portion was hugeee. Glad we ordered to share! I would love to come back whenever I'm in the area next. Highly recommend!

I had to check this spot out as I saw posted on ig and reading reviews on yelp that came out for it. This is right across the street from Blend Astoria. They have different cuisines, but have the same ambiance. Making reservations is recommended! Once you walk inside you're greeted by loud music and nice ambiance. I ended up walking to the back for the restroom and there's a hookah area right off to the side. I spoke to the manager and he told me they do parties and for 8+ people it will be pre fixed. There were a lot of different asian fusion foods to try out. For appetizers, I had chicken satay which comes in three pieces with this amazing sauce. The wagyu crispy rice was great too. They ask how you want it made and that's how they prepare it for you. The roasted pork belly was good, especially if you pair it with a side of rice or the chicken fried rice too. The ube cheesecake was a great recommendation by the manager and the waitress. Wish it was a bit bigger. Overall, the food was good, but the service was a bit lacking due to it getting super busy and not having enough waiters on staff. If that gets fixed it would've been a better time!

Thank you Zen for making my solo birthday dinner a wonderful experience, great service, vibe, beautiful decor, nice playlist. The food portions are a bit small but tasty, loved the strawberry lemon drop. Was surprised they gave me a dessert & sung happy birthday to me, free of charge. Thankful for my waitress & another waiter who took my pics for me, being that I was alone. I will definitely visit again.

The food and drinks are overpriced for the area and what you get but the bartenders are super nice. We came in and sat at the bar and the restaurant is gorgeous, I had white wine because I wasn't necessarily wanting to drink too much and it was okay. A bit basic but something you can get anywhere. Then I ordered the lo mein and it was okay at best, it was missing flavor but the bartender was attentive and helpful so I guess come for that and skip the food.

What I came back for and then a little to go, but didn't end up getting anything to go

So the first time I was here they did an amazing job on every aspect. So much so that after being filled with sushi, I still came back to get a little nostalgia from my first experience... came to the bar ordered the Chai Bubble Tea Affogato.. however while waiting for my dessert, over the very loud, but pleasant music I hear a woman on speakerphone... I can hear her entire conversation. Like she is intentionally wanting everyone to hear. I tried to get my dessert Togo and blamed it on the temperature of the restaurant coupled with this inappropriate behavior at the bar. I was shocked that no one said anything to this guest, I jokingly thought to myself this had to be someone who is dating an employee.. wow my radar was spot on . She yells out babe to an employee who works behind the bar. They move her to a booth after a quick conversation and I feel her eyes on me. I think maybe it will be better, but now I can hear the difference in where she is located with her speakerphone is on, while she is intoxicated. Her man must be Julien because that's the name I hear her say. Now she's slamming her fist on the table behind me. This place is delicious and the atmosphere is amazing. However this makes me have zero desire to come and spend hard earned money when the atmosphere involves a loud, drunk girlfriend of an employee. I'm not sure when having a person you know at a restaurant meant you acted more inappropriate. Needless to say it's only gotten worse and I had my dessert planned on ordering some food to take to go, but I couldn't stand being in there for one more second . It's really sad that not a single employee said a word to her like hey, maybe this is an inappropriate way to act. If any guest ever acted like that and I've been in Food & Beverage for 27 years as a Food & Beverage Director, I would absolutely say something to a complete stranger, but if it was a friend or family or significant other, that would be an entirely different issue for me . But that's just me.

Super nice ambiance and nice bar inside. The drinks are excellent and fresh (all syrups and ingredients made in-house - HUGE difference). Service was really good and the manager even came over to ask how everything was. After telling him the rice was mediocre he went and spoke to the cooks immediately. The Gen Tso Cauliflower was excellent (and I am not a big fan of cauliflower or vegetables). Chicken was super good. The matcha lava cake was incredible (I am not a big matcha fan). Will definitely revisit and recommend to others.

So yum!!!! Top 3 thai spots for me…read more Food- Classic order of Pad Thai & Drunken Noodles. The pad thai noodles are a big thinner than i've had before but that didn't bother me, it has such great flavor too. I recommend ordering it spicy, it's the perfect heat if you're looking for that kick but don't add it if you can't handle spice. The drunken noodles are not spicy in my opinion but i can handle a bit of heat. Loved the flavor and the noodles had the right texture, could've done without the huge chunks of tomato but great otherwise. The summer rolls were good, hard to mess those up. We also got a free mango salad with the order and that was so fresh and delicious. We just popped in for pick up but the hostess was really nice and attentive as soon as we walked in. It looked to be a nice casual spot, could be good for dinner with friends or date night.

Pad Krapoa Moo Krob, the meat on the pork belly was so juicy - the pork skin was crunchy and chewy at the same time, flavors of Thai spice, basil, and bell peppers harmoniously working together to bring a balanced meal. The shrimp basil fried rice was delicious, a great alternative if you're not feeling the crab fried rice. The service at Obao is always prompt and helpful, whether it's questions about the menu or recommendations, anyone is willing to help. One of those terms is that there is a $25/pp fee for late cancelations or no shows. **Given the rules, I think it would be nice if THEP informs everyone when they book reservations that there is a great likelihood that you will be seated at a communal table.** Upon arrival we were seat when 3 out of the 4 arrived. Yes, we were seated at the communal table, which was off putting initially because we were looking for a more private experience and opportunity to catch up. However, we powered through and made the best of it. Service started off shaky and rushed initially, with incorrect drink orders presented. However once we all settled in things improved. The food was good and the atmosphere was lovely. A few entrée dishes were unavailable and required a little flexibility in the night's taste palate. Overall Thep was enjoyable and I would like to return now that I know what to expect. Just A Note: If a communal table is not ideal I would suggest reaching out directly to the restaurant to see if something can be arranged.

The service was pleasant, friendly, efficient and helpful from the minute we walked in without a reservation. The ambiance and decor was gorgeous and took me out of NYC for a moment. The phenomenal taste of the first sip of the Thai Iced Tea that paired so well with the rest of my meal is the reason behind the first picture I took. For the apps we ordered my favorite- Chicken Curry Puffs and Chicken Satay. The Chicken Curry Puffs were soft and perfectly mashy on the inside and had a perfect crisp to the layered outside. The Chicken Satay was so different here and yet so savory served with this soft garlic bread. The sauces were so fresh, vibrant and distinct and added to both the appetizers. The peanut sauce had crushed peanuts and was such an accompaniment to texture. For the mains, we had the Chicken Pad Thai and the Braised Beef Short Rib in Penang Curry. The Pad Thai was a great standard and tasty with the crisp sprouts and zesty lime. This Braised Beef Short Rib is where it is at! One of their house specialties- the decadent flavors and textures of this dish is something that will be memorable and just the right touch of spice. Lovely bright orange sweet potatoes and beautiful green beans went so well together with the beef and curry. Looking forward to trying more of their menu and not defaulting to my usual. Warmed up Chicken Pad Thai on the pan over the stove today in a little bit of butter, this was as delicious as it was going to get today. I missed one of the most exquisite Thai Iced Teas I've had in a while, it truly set the tone of how great this late lunch was.
