We love Asian fusion so we will always try a new place offering that and while visiting NYC, my daughter and I decided to give this place a try. The restaurant was empty upon our arrival, other than one other table, and our waiter was very attentive at that time. We started with the fried chicken wontons which were delicious and then shared the chicken and broccoli and beef lo mein. While the main dishes were fine, the were nothing extraordinary and you had to pay extra for a bowl of steamed rice. I have never experienced that before. The main issue I have with this place is that a large party came in while we were eating and our waiter forgot about us. Someone else brought us to~go boxes and after about 15-20 mins our waiter finally brought over our check and when I selected 20% for the tip, which was more than deserved given the fact that he ignored us for half of our visit, he got an attitude and walked off. Did not even thank us for coming or anything! Or bill for the two of us was $85, for anyone interested in knowing. Needless to say, we will not be back or recommend. read more

Was so excited to try this place on a friends recommendation. We got last minute reservations on a Saturday morning. The restaurant was quite empty. We were one of three couples dining in. It took them some time to get us seated, which wasn't a big deal since there were just two servers and no host per se so we assume they were busy. The good part - Food was a 3.5/5 maybe even a 4 overall. We got seated and got to appetizers - tried the5 soup dumplings, crab and truffle soup, and lychee shrimp. Presentation was good and taste was okay too. For mains we got the lobster udon and salt and pepper tiger prawns, both of which I liked. It was good comfort food for a particularly cold day. The food served was also nice and made sure we were doing okay. Now the bad - there were gnats flying all over which made me wonder how bad the kitchen was. The tables at the end of the room had a lot of junk (cleaning supplies and table cloth bundles) stowed on which made was very unappealing. The worst bit - we had not had the worst time and left a 22% tip. An hour later I received a phone call saying that my card had been declined and asking me for my card details. Thankfully I was able to log into my account and could see the transaction. I then asked them how much the bill amount was and what I had ordered - they told me an order completely different from mine. I'm glad I pushed back coz initially the person who called was pretty aggressive and rude about how my card had been declined and didn't want to wait for me to check my statement either. Having figured out their mistake they then quickly hung up - no apologies or explanation!! All of this left a terrible taste in my mouth. Overall, I don't think I'm going to return. If you go - beware of the gnats and please don't give them your credit card details over the phone without verification! read more

Shrimp ball deep fried with a mustard dipping sauce - signature app - served in a tree like structure with dry ice creating some drama. Sautéed mushrooms on a crispy scallion pancake disc - the mushrooms were delicious, though I did not really taste any scallion. Beef baos with a taro chip were delicious (I will take three more next time). A rainbow of soup dumplings followed - mine was tasty with a seafood filling. Next came make your own Peking duck- the star of the night - who doesn't like a super crispy presliced duck? Next classic though unusual chicken with broccoli (super plump chicken chunks - a little too sweet for my palate), addictive cacio y Pepe udon with crab and perfectly sautéed baby bok choy. What an amazing fine dining restaurant! I love how all of the portion sizes are generous as fancier restaurants typically give the tiniest size plates. I love all of the unique dishes like the passion fruit prawn, creamy king crab udon, and lychee shrimp balls. My favorite was the lychee shrimp balls as the presentation was amazing and I've never seen anything like this. The waiter was friendly and our waters were consistently filled. We come here all the time. The front desk woman set in her chair with her legs curled up on the chair itself. Then we ordered drinks, appetizers and then whole peking duck and string beans. We needed to ask for water initially. Then the string beans arrived before the appetizers and before the water and our drinks. This place is truly a hidden gem! Food was absolutely delicious. Lychee shrimp balls not only were they delicious the presentation was beautiful as well. The apple spritz mocktail was so yummy, they don't have their liquor license yet but I can't wait to try it that with some vodka. The Restaurant's decor beautiful, service warm and friendly. This is actually the first restaurant where I saw servers wearing gloves while serving food, which i actually appreciate. Located in the E 80's, this comfortably elegant UES restaurant w/ an overpriced wannabe elevated Chinese Cantonese menu that's neither fusion nor Americanized Chinese cuisine serves up above-average dishes w/ fresh quality ingredients. However, most of the dishes we tried lacked seasoning, refinement & "wok Hei" - that charred texture / aroma that cloaks piping-hot stir-fries - which is the foundation of most decent Chinese Canto dishes. Black Pepper Steak sauce was weirdly too sweet but the beef quality was good. Sautéed string beans were bland & didn't have that nice char, which is what makes the dish shine & is indicative of poor "wok hei" skills. Fried Lobster in garlic -although fresh- had too much batter & was also pretty bland. And although presented in a gimmicky way, Lychee Shrimp balls were creatively executed. They were decent but served w/ the wrong sauce. Perhaps, a sauce w/ a bit more acidity & spice would've been a better complement to seafood. Overall, we liked that each dish had fresh quality ingredients, which is usually harder to come by at Chinese restaurants on the UES. Hence, the 3.75-star Yelp rating. Hopefully, they can work it out & focus on executing more authentic Cantonese flavors & hiring a chef who knows how to cook w/ "wok Hei." And we'll be back to try more dishes. read more

We were only a party of 4, therefore, we opted for the mushroom flower tree background. There was no cocktail menu due to their liquor license of only beer and wine. I was fine with that. I started with the I love Lychee mocktail. For appetizers we shared the truffle mushroom and lychee shrimp. The lychee shrimp is must order just for a social media video. Both dishes were amazing and worth ordering at least once. For the entrees we shared the passion fruit tiger Prawns, curry Veggies with Scallion pancakes, sautéed green beans, king crab udon, succulent branzino and salt and pepper shrimp. Everything tasted amazing and portions were generous. I also had a glass of sancerre. For dessert, we shared the limoncello truffle and chocolate for my friend's birthday. We have been going to and enjoying Tang by Mr. Sun since it opened; although the space is usually empty, the food is excellent. Yesterday I went to lunch with my mother and a friend. We had a delicious meal of Peking duck, Treasure Prawns, House Special Bacon Fried Rice, and Sweet & Sour Chicken. As the waiter cleared the table, he stood above my right arm. He grabbed the empty dish of sweet and sour chicken and brushed the spoon out of the dish into another dish. As he did this, the sauce splattered on the sleeve of my white sweater, leaving four stains of orange, and onto my hair. I immediately said something to the waiter, and he said it had nothing to do with the spoon; the remaining sauce had simply spilled out of the dish. If that had been the case, the sauce would have made one spot on the sweater, not several splatters, and not gotten into my hair. The manager offered me a hand wipe and a shot glass of seltzer with a dirty dish rag to clean my sweater. When we suggested they should pay my cleaning bill, we were ignored. In past experience, when a restaurant has a lapse in service, they have offered something in exchange, a free dessert, an adjustment in the bill, or coverage of a cleaning bill. Tang offered nothing, not so much as a free cup of tea. As we were leaving, the waiter apologized while repeating it was the sauce dripping out of the bowl that caused the problem; he did nothing with the spoon. In my experience, a decline in service is frequently followed by a decline in food. I hope that is not the case with Tang's. As much as I enjoy the food, I do not intend to wear it home. read more

Service was bad. I came in and there was nobody at the front door. After 5 minutes or so, somebody came out and seated me but didn't come to take my order for quite a while. As i was leaving I said I'm sorry i can't wait any longer to be served and the waiter said "no worries", in a way that seemed smug and mean. He was talking to another customer. Came back to Tang by Mr Sun on a Friday evening for dinner. They had a 1 ballon, and this restaurant has been open for 1 year! Hope it will stay in business for a long time to come! We really love their Peking duck, it is definitely one of the best we've had. The skin is so crispy and perfectly cut. The pancake is very thin and perfect. I don't like the wraps to be thick, I've been to other restaurants and the wraps are bun-like, terrible! Can't even taste the duck at that point! This time we also tried their Maryland crab cake, which was divine! Yes the pieces when they came out were small (small bite size) however they redeemed themselves when the inside was entirely of crab! I've had crab cakes where they were large but full of breading. But this wasn't the case at all! I was impressed and it was served with a tangy mustard sauce. We also ordered the string beans, which was a nice portion. Overall we love coming to Tang! read more

The main dishes were subpar unfortunately. The texture of the chicken was off for every single meal. It was sooo soft and didn't taste like chicken at all, rather soft as tofu. This really knocked the ranking. We did appreciate the amount of protein and portion of each meal but texture of the chicken was disappointing. All plates were aesthetically pleasing in terms of presentation but overall food looked better in photos. WOW, wow, wow. This is probably one of the most impressive restaurants I've ever been to! From the decor, to the food, to the staff, there's literally not one bad thing I can say about this place. I came here with my friend and we both thoroughly enjoyed this place. For an appetizer we ordered the shrimp balls, which came out in a beautiful smokey display. We also had the truffle mushroom pancakes which were delicious. For my main meal I had the king Pao chicken which was great. I definitely didn't have enough room for dessert, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to try one of their amazing desserts. I got the red lantern, which was an amazing cheesecake with strawberry and raspberry. I am not a sweets person, but this definitely hit the spot! I will definitely be coming back here. Lunch date with my sister after a trip to the Met: The location on 3rd Ave is very unassuming even being on the UES. When you walk in to what you think is just a basic Chinese restaurant, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the decor/ambience. Rubel was an amazing guide through the menu and made pointed suggestions. The food was more than filling - even the happy hour menu - with the only set back being that they do not have the full bar. The restaurant felt fairly upscale, the decor was really nice and could see this being a special occasions type restaurant. But the food we got kinda gave Panda Express..? The hot and sour beef felt like it only had breading inside, and didn't feel like it was worth the price at all. It is also worth to note rice is not included with main entrees. The pecking duck was delicious though -- the crepe wrap felt a bit thick but the duck was well cooked. Overall, felt mixed about this place but our server was really nice!
