As I warmed up my leftovers this afternoon, I realized I did not write a review for this impeccably delicious meal. The service was pleasant, friendly, efficient and helpful from the minute we walked in without a reservation. The ambiance and decor was gorgeous and took me out of NYC for a moment. The phenomenal taste of the first sip of the Thai Iced Tea that paired so well with the rest of my meal is the reason behind the first picture I took. For the apps we ordered my favorite- Chicken Curry Puffs and Chicken Satay. The Chicken Curry Puffs were soft and perfectly mashy on the inside and had a perfect crisp to the layered outside. The Chicken Satay was so different here and yet so savory served with this soft garlic bread. The sauces were so fresh, vibrant and distinct and added to both the appetizers. The peanut sauce had crushed peanuts and was such an accompaniment to texture. For the mains, we had the Chicken Pad Thai and the Braised Beef Short Rib in Penang Curry. The Pad Thai was a great standard and tasty with the crisp sprouts and zesty lime. This Braised Beef Short Rib is where it is at! One of their house specialties- the decadent flavors and textures of this dish is something that will be memorable and just the right touch of spice. Lovely bright orange sweet potatoes and beautiful green beans went so well together with the beef and curry. Looking forward to trying more of their menu and not defaulting to my usual. Warmed up Chicken Pad Thai on the pan over the stove today in a little bit of butter, this was as delicious as it was going to get today. I missed one of the most exquisite Thai Iced Teas I've had in a while, it truly set the tone of how great this late lunch was. read more

I see what the hype is about! I've been meaning to come for a while - 2 friends and I shared 4 mains and an appetizer. Everything was really good! The vegetarian spring rolls weren't too heavy and clearly freshly fried with a little sweet and sauce. 3 for $9. We also got the vegetable pad see ew to share - this was probably my favorite even though it was a bit basic generally speaking hahah. I think this was $21. The Moo Dang was super flavorful and came with 3 different kinds of prepared pork. $18 - so good over the rice! The Kao soy is always gonna be a hit over rice as well. We got it with chicken ($20). I met up with a friend here last week who suggested it as a great spot, it was a bit out of the way for both of us but hey this place delivered! We were there for a light/early dinner and split an order of veggie fried spring rolls and the tofu pad see ew, I can't really remember much about the appetizer but the pad see ew was *five stars* excellent! There's so many ways this simple dish can go wrong but the noodles were just right and everything was nicely balanced. Service was excellent - they're toddler-friendly and the restaurant itself is beautiful. I'm guilty of ordering a little too much thai take-out which makes it easy to start getting places mixed up, but this place stands out for sure! Panang Curry - a Thai curry with a creamy coconut texture and a sweet, aromatic spicy flavor. Thai Basil Shrimp - nice and spicy with string beans, peppers and fresh basil. A book club friend recommended this spot and I am so glad she did!! From the outside, you would not realize how cute the restaurant is inside. I dined solo at the bar which was an amazing experience. The line gets very long here, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation beforehand. The restaurant looks small and unassuming from outside, but is very cute, spacious, and well-decorated once you enter. I really liked the similan curry. It was sweet and creamy with the perfect touch of spice. It came with a sweet pickled cucumber salad, which paired well with the curry, as well as roti and rice. Restaurant is very spacious in its location and has a very quiet ambience to it. I was very surprised to see the decor when we ate-- i just wasn't expecting it to be so nice. Not a place where you have to be too dressy so do not worry. The service was fast and the servers were so nice. They were also very helpful in any questions we had. We ordered the steamed mussels for an appetizer and it was good. I think it just isn't as fulling as i would want it to be for a shared appetizer so i prob would have gone with something else next time. We shared pad Thai with mock duck (WOW! Never had duck on pad Thai i went to Thailand) -- def a game changer. We also had the kea mao with beef which is flat noodles either some spice to it which also was delicious. The last meal we shared was the kana moo krab which was rice with and egg, steamed Chinese broccoli and pork. I always love to get a Thai iced tea when I'm in one of these restaurants and we also shared the lychee iced tea which was good but a little sweet (in case that's some thing you look out for). A neighborhood go to spot for years! Up Thai is always solid and my personal favorite on the UES (where there are an abundance of Thai restaurants). The inside is well decorated and although it is often busy, it usually does not take long to get a table. This time we tried their salmon spicy rice special which was so flavorful and delicious. The sauce was perfectly spicy and added a nice kick and the salmon was very crispy. Also enjoyed the curry puff which had a flaky pastry and delicious filling. Just had to come here at the recommendation of Marianne w. Hole in the mall place on 2nd avenue near 74th Street upper East side New York City. Wife have the $26 Suki dish with glass noodles shrimp chicken and vegetables along with breaded squid in a mildly spicy sauce. I had the $35 beef short rib Penang with brown rice. Dish came with slice sweet potatoes and several hunks of beef on bone in a spicy sauce along with green beans. Both of us loved our dishes and look forward to seeing Marianne come here to try the dishes. Whenever I'm on the Upper East Side, Upthai is one of my go-to spots. The service is always warm and attentive, and the festive décor gives the place such a cheerful, welcoming vibe that makes you feel at home. Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday at around 1 and it was packed. Luckily, we waited maybe only about 15 minutes. The restaurant is a tight space since all the tables are packed kind of close together. We had a stroller with us and had to leave it up front. But we did get a corner booth, which was nice. To start, we had the Hoi Jor (deep fried tofu skin stuffed with ground pork, shrimp and crab meat, served with plum sauce). This was flavorful, and I liked the plum sauce it came with. There was also a good amount of filling. For my main, I went with the Pad Thai with tofu. I had initially asked for no egg so that my daughter (who's allergic to egg) could also eat some. Not less than a minute later, I asked the waiter if I could actually just have the egg on the side, and he said it was too late and that he already put in the order. Seems strange because 1. Did he really put in the order that quickly? 2. Couldn't they just cook an egg on the side? It's not like I had asked for an egg and then asked for it to be taken out. But no big deal. I do wish that they specified on the menu that the tofu would be fried tofu puffs, because I was expecting/wanting regular tofu. Other than that, the flavor of the pad thai was good - not too sour, and not too sweet, which can be a fine line. Hubby had the Up Thai Fried Rice Claypot (sea scallop, shrimp, chicken, Chinese sausage, onion, scallions, and shiitake mushrooms), and my sister had the Kao Soy (egg noodles, red onion, green apple, fried shallot, and pickled mustard greens in red coconut curry broth). I tried a bit of both. The rice was a little too salty. The broth from the kao soy was good. We all had a little bit of leftovers for the next day. UES is not usually a neighborhood I venture to, and the food wasn't good enough to make me go out of the way for it so I doubt I'll be back. But I'm glad we were able to find a last minute lunch spot with a relatively short wait. read more

Crab fried rice - amazing, loved the mound of softly cooked fluffy eggs and peeled crab, the green sauce made this dish a star, I'd come back for this 2. My favorite here is the soft shell crab. They fruit crisp so I request that the sauce be served separately so I can enjoy the crispness of the soft shell crab! They also have good Thai Tea and appetizers we had to share. I highly recommend this because it is easily accessible by bus. Tried the crab fried rice and it was super good full of flavor and perfectly seasoned. I got mine without the egg and it was still really enjoyable, so I can only imagine how good it is with everything included. Definitely recommend getting the sauce on the side!! it's a must and really takes it up a notch! The ambience was really nice, relaxed but still lively. So DELICIOUS!!!! Upscale Thai street food that blows your mind. I wish I came here with a group of people to be able to tried more things. Everything in the menu sounded so good. I arrived without reservation on a Saturday afternoon and they accommodated me quickly without any problem. The server was very friend, I ask him for suggestions since it was my first time. He recommended me a special dish of the day that consisted of soft shell crab in a curry on top of a fried eggplant bed that came with a side of white rice. I had the Thai tea without milk that was quite concentrated in a good way because I keep pouring water on it and it lasted longer. A delicious Thai spot in the UES where you can enjoy the classics! *AMBIANCE* Highly recommend making a reservation here because it gets VERY busy. The decor is lovely and perfect for date night or catching up with loved ones. The Turkish looking lights in the back of the restaurant create warm lighting with a comfortable vibe. *FOOD* Some of the standouts were the Thai Iced Tea, Up Spring Rolls, Curry Puffs, and the Pad Thai. The dishes were all very flavorful, well balanced and the ingredients tasted fresh. The only dish I felt could be improved was the oversalted pad se ew. It tasted like I was eating a bottle of soy sauce and the noodles felt overcooked. *SERVICE* Unfortunately, the service was left to be desired. In between appetizers and mains, we had to wait as long as half an hour, which I felt compared to other Thai places they were able to turn dishes much quicker. We also saw folks who were seated after us getting their dishes before. During prime hours, it seemed like they were churning a bunch of take out orders, so be prepared for a wait. Another 4.5 stars although this was really close to a 5! Pro tip. Make a reservation through Opentable if you are coming here on weekend. It was very crowded but with reservation, we were seated pretty quickly as a party of 4 but there were people waiting. We ordered apps which were all very good. The skin on wings had a nice crisp; the calamari was nicely breaded and the aioli went really nicely. The curry puffs could have used a little more curry flavor but still pretty good. The entrees were all very good. Favorite was probably the duck tamarind with eggplants. I have never had eggplants with this dish but it was prepared really well. The kea mao (drunken noodles) were very good and had a nice level of heat. The Massaman curry was also pretty good although could have used a little more heat. And the one major hiccup was that the short rib panang took forever to come out. We were pretty much done with all of our other dishes when it finally came out. Was it worth the wait; not really. The short rib was incredibly tender and fell off the bone but the sauce was a little nondescript and (like a broken record) could have used some more heat. We also ordered some cocktails and I had the Thai iced coffee, and they were all very good! Next time we come back (and we will be back), we will ask them to put more heat. As a soup lover though, the tofu vegetable soup was so bad, I didn't even want to finish it so that was disappointing; the salad was definitely the better option. Got the single crispy spring roll for the appetizer and tried the green curry and the massaman curry - both were flavorful with a nice spicy kick. OVERRATED!! This spot is popular amongst UES folks, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. What we got: - Chicken Satay Skewers: Came with delicious garlic bread. The skewers themselves were just ok, not anything to write home about. - Salad Roll: Tastes fresh, since there was mint in them, but again, just ok. - Pomelo Salad with Grilled Shrimp: My FAVE of the apps! It's a bit spicy, but balanced really nicely with the sweet + tart pomelo. - Pad Thai (Veggie): AWFUL - it tasted super inauthentic, as if they stir fried frozen veggies with the noodles. The taste of the dish itself didn't taste like a Pad Thai at all. - Pad Se-Ew: Better of the noodle dishes. Tasted very standard. Overall, there are SO many other Thai spots with solid menus and better, more authentic flavors. This spot tasted like something that belongs in the suburbs. The weight was about 30 minutes on a Saturday night 8 PM. When we walked in there were not a lot of Asian people and everyone who was eating was eating their own entrée which is kind of odd for an Asian place since most things are family style. We asked for medium spicy on all the food and it was not spicy at all. The short rib panang curry was pretty much a soup and not a good consistency for a curry. The pomelo salad with shrimp was very good, but only has three pieces of shrimp. The duck on the basil fried rice was definitely worth adding and the fried rice itself was weirdly sweet definitely solid choice overall for a Thai place in the upper east side but not worth waiting in line for and I think it was a little bit overpriced and very Americanized. The service at Up Thai was noticeably really good, even with it being really packed inside. I got the spring rolls as an appetizer and they were good, and the sauce it came with was amazing. The soup we got was good too and nice that it was vegetarian. The broth could've had more flavor in my opinion but it was still good, and I liked that both the soup and rolls had glass noodles inside. I got veggie noodle soup as the main course. I didn't love the taste of the soup/curry part but the crispy noodles it came with was a nice touch and it was filled with veggies. I think I'd order something else for the entree next time. Everyone talks about how exceptional the food is here and that just wasn't my experience. I came here last Saturday for dinner with a girlfriend of mine and we made a reservation for 6pm. It was originally for indoor seating, but I was about 20 minutes late so we opted to sit outside instead. You might be able to walk in, but I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation. Food: For an appetizer, I ordered the curry puffs which were ok, but had a weird texture gooey on the inside. My friend and I both ordered the Paloma paradise drink which was pretty and tasted ok. For the main course, I ordered the massaman curry with crispy duck, which I wasn't wowed by. For me, the duck was cooked too hard which made it dry. We came here late on a Saturday night around 9:30pm. The place was still buzzing, we got a seat at the bar. Lots of choices of dishes. My husband wanted broad noodles and went with Kea Mao, aka Drunken Noodles. I went with Moo Dang, which had three different meats; roasted bbq pork, crispy pork belly and Chinese sausage with a hard boiled egg, rice and a thick gravy - it reminded me a little of Loco Moco. This restaurant was crowded on a Saturday line. You can't miss the fairly large line outside either waiting for a table or for takeout. The lady that checks you in is outside, kinda annoying when it's cold. We got there 10minutes early for our reservation and she said we were too early. She kinda got nasty with use for entering the restaurant before waiting to be called - only to be mistaken because her colleague called us in for our reservation. So... don't enter unless given the go ahead. The restaurant, although small, is beautifully designed. Seating is a bit tight, as customers and servers frequently bump pass each other. The food is worth the trip. The pad see ew was well seasoned and cooked. Not as salty and sweet as other places, which IMO is great. The up Thai spring rolls are very good. They are jammed packed with their special mixture of veggies and seafood. Calamari was solid, nothing to rave about. The rotti and the duck is also very good, their take on Peking duck. Short ribs has a bit of kick to it, but the coconut milk based sauce is amazing. Although we finished up the short ribs - which fall right off the bone - we had them back up the sauce. Fried branzino was incredible. Well seasoned, well fried. Lastly, we got the crab fried rice. Very well executed as well. We ordered the massaman curry with crispy duck, pad see ew with beef, and eggplant basil with pork. The food all came out really quickly. Everything was so yummy. My favorite was the curry with duck. The duck skin was so crispy. It was also great bang for your buck, around $80 post tax and tip for the 3 entrees. The only thing I'll note is that the space is pretty intimate. Went to UpThai on a Sunday night to celebrate and very glad we did! We got the duck appetizer, pad see ew (w/shrimp) and green curry (w/chicken). I also had the lychee martini and it was well worth the money! Out of everything HIGHLY recommend the green curry, it spicy with a hint of sweetness and one of the best Thai dishes I've had in NY.
