I ordered the sushi lunch special. For like 9 bucks, I got 12 pcs of sushi (roll) and miso soup. Both the soup and the sushi were very good and fresh. My wife ordered beef and broccoli. Again, very fresh and it was also very good. Beef an broccoli came with soup, fried rice, and a spring roll for around 8 bucks! We were very impressed by this place and would definitely go again. I've been to Zen a total of 3 times and each time I have an incredible experience. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with a waterfall that is very entrancing. Maybe I just have bad luck with this place but I was disappointed EVERY time! I gave this place a try several times and it has been just awful . My first trip there I ordered a Togo order and they gave me the wrong order. I work at a restaurant myself so i understand the confusion of togo orders when its busy so i decided to give them another try. Second time I went to dine in I found a ball of ginger inside my napkin! It was just gross!Then, I ordered an icecream tempura and as I was enjoying it I found a fish tail in it.! I completely lost my appetite. This place clearly does not have proper hygiene. I mean who finds food in their napkin? And who would EVER want to find a fish/shrimp tail inside their DESSERT? This place is absolutely disgusting and you would only go there for low quality food. Also when I got my sushi roll with crunch on top. Maybe it was because I went at the end of the day but it tasted stale and was not crunchy at all. Each time that this happened though the workers seemed very apologetic about it and always responded with "i don't know why that happened" well they should definitely figure out why such things are happening and fix it. I will not be going back to this restaurant. Service was terrible. The server we had ate his lunch during our meal. Then we had to get another server to accommodate us. At the end of the meal I did not tip, because I felt as though the service was terrible. The server ran out of the restaurant after us asking us why we did not tip. Why would I tip someone and they stopped during the middle of their service to eat their lunch. Food is ok but service is terrible. read more

They were very accommodating of our large group, reserving a nice table, allowing us to hang around well after we finished our meals, and even offering separate checks to all 7 of us. Love this place! My mom and me go here regularly. Beautiful decor, friendly service and great food. Their Thai dishes did not impress me at all, there's a funny flavor to them. But I absolutely love their beef lo mein, it's the best I've ever had. The BBQ beef skewers were great too, and my mom loves their sushi and mixed drinks. I suppose one would not equate "Burtonsville" with good sushi, but this surprisingly was on par with many DC sushi spots. In addition, it's like a little mini P.F. Changs with the decor and Chinese options. The special rolls were a little expensive, considering you only get 6 pieces. I got the "Crazy Girl Roll" which was delicious and spicy, but for $13, I thought it would be an 8-piecer. The calamari was excellent as were the apple martinis. The bf ordered the crispy honey beef and it was excellent--not too much batter, perfectly crunchy, and a good portion. It's definitely on the higher/nicer end of Chinese restaurants, so don't expect inflated portion sizes due to things being coated in batter or random veggies thrown in. Also, our server was wonderful and attentive! Overall, I really liked everything and would return if in the area. read more

They aren't stingy with the alcohol either! My only complaint were the loud ass giggling aspiring to be teen mom hoes sitting behind us. Those bitches were so loud. Their General Tso's Chicken is great! It's made of all white meat and served in two sizes. They had no problem making it not spicy with brown rice. Been here about 4 or 5 times. Each time the food was subpar. Sui's Asian Bistro has much better tasting sushi. And this last time I came to Zen, I ordered the General Tso's Chicken. It was certainly the worst General Tso's I have ever eaten. The chicken tasted like rubber and not cooked well. Even the people I was with, who come to Zen more often, agreed that it was very bad. My friend also purchased a Thai noodle dish and he struggled to eat it. I tasted his dish as well hoping it would taste better than mine, but it tasted just as bad as mine. Only reason I give this place 2 stars is because there ambience is decent. But, based on what I've eaten there so far, it is not a place for a foodie! read more

Food is great! Nice ambience, a hidden gem that is small and quaint. Reasonably priced. My daughter and I went for lunch. They offer several lunch dishes to choose from and a Bento box with a spring roll, rice, sushi, salad, soup and a hot meat item (chicken) for a really decent price. I would have given 5 stars....I ordered the chicken & shrimp combo which was tasty but was completely filled with an abundance of red & green peppers 2 shrimp and a good amount of sliced chicken. My daughter had the chicken Lo mein which was hardy and filling. They both were served with soup, spring roll and fried rice her meal was about $6.55 and mine cost $7.55. Recently came for lunch and were utterly disappointed with the service. First we waited over 5 minutes to even have someone come over to us. My husband asked if he could substitute rice for veggies with his Thai basil chicken, the waiters response a flat out "no", as he just stared back at my husband. Headline: Very disappointing. We had a menu with a coupon, so when it came time for Sunday dinner, I checked out the Yelp review and was pretty impressed with what I read. The proof is in the eating, though -- and we were all fairly unhappy with our food. The adults ordered up some sashimi and a special roll that was praised in a comment below, for its heat and flavor (the Hot Hot Hot Roll). The kids ordered lo mein and kung pao -- plus we had some Chinese appetizers/soup. At least, the sushi was presented nicely and looked good. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with the fish, but it just didn't taste good. Maybe old, maybe it picked up flavors from something else. I wish I could be more precise, but it just wasn't good fish. The Hot Hot Hot Roll wasn't noticeably spicy. It was cloyingly sweet -- not what I want in sushi. The Chinese food was also underwhelming -- looked like what I'd expect from a strip mall Chinese restaurant in the far-out suburbs. The entrees were over-sauced and un-inspired....and seriously heavy on the soy sauce. The Volcano Shrimp was over-cooked, too bready, and I'd guess made with lousy frozen cocktail shrimp, and the siracha mayonnaise lacked any real heat, despite the name. This was safe "hot and spicy" food - the kind made for people who wouldn't really want hot and spicy. The hot and sour soup was decent, but it's hardly a reason to pick a restaurant. Besides, I've had better up the road in Columbia. I hate having to give a bad review, but after having had a miserable meal at Flavors of India, I've made it my mission to try and give others fair warning, before they waste good money on bad food. We've been going to the new Tendou Sushi farther up 29 N, in Fulton. That place serves up some might fine raw fish, and much of the other food is worth a try, too. I can't say that about Zen Asian Grill & Sushi. Based on our first -- and last -- experience, I'd be surprised to find anything there that doesn't taste better in many other places within easy reach. I've tried many things on the menu and everything is always cooked well and prices are very fair for the portion and quality of food. I am a Chinese food lover and have tried most of the local take out places but Zen is my favorite by far. It's great for takeout and dining in. Zen for me a 3-4 star rating, depending on what you order. The restaurant itself looks nice and the staff tends to be helpful and attentive. My experience has been that the sushi is pretty good and better than I expect from a restaurant of this size. My wife says that the house special rolls are good and she likes the selection. The weak point seems to be the "Chinese" entrees. The fried rice is heavy, greasy and kind of bland. I'd say the same about most of the other entrees. They're not bad per se, but no better than I can get at any carry out and not as good as the best carry out/ delivery places. Overall, I'd say it's a safe bet for a large group, especially if you don't want to spend a fortune or have some people that don't like sushi. It's good for adventurous children and nobody looks at us askew for walking in with our baby. It's not for sushi connoisseurs. There's plenty of seating and I've never waited for a table. Being in a large shopping center, there's plenty of parking too. read more
