Haven't been here for awhile, but since we were in the wilds of Northtown and getting a bit peckish, figured we could stop In. There were only three other tables occupied when we got in. We were told to seat ourselves , so we picked a two top by the window. We were handed menu's and the server came back with ice water and asked if we were ready to order. We ordered the fried gyoza (5) and my dining companion ordered shoyu ramen . I ordered my "standard" curry with white rice and pork katsu. The gyoza were crispy and hot. Served on a little tray with a soy based dipping sauce. No plates were provided for the gyoza which is pretty typical, but kind of a negative for me. The ramen was served in a medium size bowl, chocked full of noodles, charshu, etc but no undercooked soft boiled egg. (I think that was extra, but to me I thought eggs used to be standard). My dining companion said the broth was good and the noodles toothsome. My curry came shortly afterward, a decent sized katsu , medium serving of short grain rice and the curry. I usually don't order my curry very spicy and on the scale of 1-10 I usually order 1or 2. Today it was one. The katsu was crispy but still moist in the middle, piping hot. The curry was just thick enough and I I had enough to mix in with the rice after I was done with the katsu. Zen is so so good. A wide range of options to top your curry with. They also have a good portion of ramen/udon type meals. For an appetizer I highly recommend the Kaarage. And free. I mention this probably because I live in LA and paid parking is the norm. Just get excited if a place validates or on Sundays when parking is gratis. That's in most places, not all. Anyway ... Walked in and it's packed. Place is good for large groups. Probably best to call ahead though so seating can be arranged eliminating a wait for tables to clear if when they get busy. The service was pretty good. As it was busy, the servers had a flow going - going in and out of the kitchen taking care of the guests both on the way in and out of the BOH. As for the food - see pics. Most were cooked well but as you can see, some were a little overdone. The Katsu wasn't too dry - but would have loved it had it been a little more tender and moist. Overall, it was a good experience taste wise. It was quite a bit of of food - had to take some to go. Heated up and was still good. Never the same as when it's freshly made but still good enough. We arrived about 10 minutes after they opened. The restaurant was clean and bright. The staff was very attentive and friendly. I went with the mini curry bowl, which was perfect and added a side. The curry had a slight spice but wasn't overpowering. The rice had good texture. The croquette was nice and crispy but most items lacked salt to balance. The Thai ice tea was refreshing. There's options to beef up the meal where you can add veggies, proteins, etc. I appreciate the traditional atmosphere, and the server was very friendly and fast. Zen Curry is an absolute gem, especially because it's so close to home. It's the perfect spot to satisfy my Japanese curry craving. I've tried Japanese curry at other places nearby, but it just doesn't hit the same as it does here. The flavor and spices this place delivers keeps me coming back. Service seems to be hit or miss each time I visit. During my most recent call in for a to-go order, I felt very rushed, and the person who answered the phone wasn't very pleasant to speak with. This was right after they had opened, so it wasn't busy at the time. Portion sizes could also be better. I ordered a regular and my partner ordered a large, and there really wasn't much of a difference between the two, which was a little disappointing. That said, the food itself is consistently good, and it's still my go to spot when I'm craving Japanese curry. Was pretty quiet place with families and can definitely talk and catch up. The staff seemed very busy with customers and only one waitress and one bus person. Drove pass this place on our way to a TBall game and figured why not once the game finished. We love trying new/different places especially outside of our neighborhood. Ample parking shared with several other businesses, we got there a bit after opening so it was fairly early. When we walked in, we were greeted and were told we could sit anywhere. Our server brought over water without us having to ask and she gave us a few minutes to decide on our selections. Our order was Katsudon (2pork cutlets donburi style), tonkatsu ramen, mini curry bowl (mini rice bowl with curry sauce), karaage chicken and gyoza. Everything came out fresh and hot and the curry on point, exactly the taste I was hoping for and the chicken crunchy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. The pork cutlets in the Katsudon was a bigger portion than what was expected and the cutlets were thick and juicy. Tonkatsu ramen was delicious as well, the only thing we didn't like about it was the bamboo shoots (personally I'm not a bamboo shoot fan) and now I know next time I can ask to not have it, which is great because they accommodate as requested when possible. Price wise, affordable and won't put a huge dent in your wallet. Our total bill after taxes and before tip was $46.55, which also included 2 cokes (soda is in a can, no fountain drinks). 9/10 place and will visit again, there were other items we wanted to try but didn't want to overdo it on our 1st visit. Japanese curry is one of my favorite dishes, so I'm glad I was able to find a solid spot so close to home. They offer 3 sizes for the rice curry: small, regular, and large. The portions are pretty big and the small is the perfect size for me. You then get to choose your add ins for an additional price. I always opt for the chicken katsu, which comes out perfectly crisp. You can also choose your spice level. My spice tolerance isn't very high, so I get the 3 and it is perfect. A nice kick, but not too spicy. Don't forget to ask for the pickled radish! The croquette was fried nicely and was interesting and good. The vegetables seemed like a stewy mix of frozen and fresh that were ok. The Medium size might be large to most people. I had extra leftover but not enough for two meals. My husband tried a medium sized curry #8 heat (35 cents for #8 heat) with sausage, spam, rice, and an egg. The egg was almost heard and came out unseasoned. We were surprised that they fried the spam. They give you spoons to eat your meal here. I thought my meal was easier to eat with a fork. It tasted worse than store bought naan and you only get a few pieces for the price. They do have コロッケ Korokke which is potato croquette. It was a bit cold but it was good! Be warned--- they are extremely overpriced given the small portions. You'd think you were eating at a gourmet restaurant on the strip. I ordered to go, came out to about 26 dollars as I ordered a curry with VEGETABLES, extra curry. No meat or anything like that. My container came half filled because apparently extra curry means putting a regular portion in a larger container...I paid for a larger container with barely any food. It's complete robbery. One scoop of rice and half a container of curry....its like every spoonfull costs 2 dollars as I had about 13 spoons of it before it was gone. The owners must be rich...I guarantee you the ingredients don't cost even 1/100 of what they charge. Price was very very competitive and the flavor was delicious. I had the spicy level 4 (it goes up to level 10) and it was quite a kick but still mild enough. The portion was perfect, not too much and not too little. Service was very good. They always made sure we were doing okay but like not overly aggressive. The place was very clean and organized. I have been frequenting this place for a while now. Every time I dine here the consistency of the food is spot on. Although there really isn't much vegan options here, we end up eating a more vegetarian meal instead. The flavor of the curry, food and service is what keeps bringing us back here. The atmosphere is casual. The food quantity is good. The price seems a little on the higher end for a casual dining experience but we'll worth it. The only issue I have is the spice level...I usually get a 0 because I'm a wimp, but even a 0 has a little kick to it, lol.
