The General Tso's "Chicken" was better than the Sesame "Beef," but both were good. The Three Green Vegetables (broccoli, zucchini & green beans) were bland, but the Buddha's Delight had more varied tastes. The miso/tofu soup was standard, but the vegan sushi spicy tuna and Dragon were relished. It was my first time trying lychee tea ... sweet ... liked their teapot and candle warmer (photo below). The ambiance is decent so we hosted a party here 7 adults and 5 young kids, we ordered a lot of dishes. I've had vegan food before and this place is rated so/so. ***The tofu soup had a boiled cockroach in it!!! Wtf our guests ordered the pumpkin soup instead. (I skipped) Already turned off we kept going benefits of the doubt. ***We now find a large piece of steel wool in the lo mien that the kids were eating. WTF... showed the owner she told me what it was and just blamed the chef as if it's nothing big. 2 incidents in the same night!!!?? Seriously that's unheard of or deliberate I was done after that, I will never come back here. We tried to be nice and didn't want to take pictures of the cockroach or steel wool what if my 4 year old ate this??? Zen Garden really does live up to the name ... a great place to for vegan food and having a calm meal with friends or alone! When I went around early afternoon on a Saturday, there wasn't many people there, which fortunately allowed me to hear the fantastic music choice, like sitting in a classic coffee shop. Food-wise, the "incredible chicken" is a popular staple and for good reason ; it really does remind me of orange chicken and has a bit of tanginess to it that hits the spot. The stuffed mushroom also was tasty, pretty much little balls of joy every time I plopped one I my mouth. Only thing, the "complementary veggies" of the dishes felt pretty bland, pretty much just tasted steamed, and are a little on the pricer side. Still would recommend for any vegan though ! read more

This was a birthday request from my niece. It's a vegan Chinese restaurant in a neighborhood in Long Island... it was my first time back since I moved away 29 years ago. When we arrived for our 7:00 reservation, we were the only ones in there. The space is so beautiful! We got seated in a comfortable space and got our menus. There was... a lot to choose from... like a LOT. Sushi, noodles and lots and lots of tea. What stood out was a set of zodiac blooming teas. Being Aquarius season as it is, I had to get the Aquarius tea. I've never seen a giant flower bloom inside tea water before. It was quite an experience to watch. On top of that, it tasted delicious. I got some sushi -- sweet potato and avocado rolls specifically. Delicious -- but theres' never enough pickled ginger :). I got the Singapore Mei Fun noodles as my main dish, and it was pretty darn enjoyable too! It was a HUGE mound though, and I had to box a lot up. Now, the highlight... Dessert was a peanut butter mousse brownie -- a warm melt-in-your-mouth brownie topped with peanut butter mousse. It was amazing! I'd return just for that hahaha. We would give 5 stars if it were not for the desserts...where the quantity is very minimal, but not the price. They run out of or don't make enough of the items on the dessert menu...a bummer. I bring everyone I know here because the food is phenomenal! Literally everything they make here is so delicious. I highly recommend the Peking duck buns and the chicken satay for starters, and dessert is a MUST! I always get the peanut butter mousse bomb, it's gigantic and can easily be shared. I also love their tea menu, many of them are served as a small pot of tea over a tealight candle holder, very cute. Sundays and Mondays they have sushi specials, really delicious. The spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and other rolls really taste so close to the real thing it's crazy. So well made. They have a small discount for bills paid in cash which I like to take advantage of as well. Honestly I hope this place stays in business forever because i will never stop coming and bringing my friends here to try the food. It's amazing. I went to this restaurant twice. The first time I went, I came with a a party of 5 around 8pm, the whole time we were there we felt rushed but it was understandable because they close at 9. However, I came with a table of 12 today around 7pm. They rushed us when ordering and they constantly collected our plates even when there was still a bit of food left. The workers are very unprofessional and rude. We ended up leaving at 7:50 because we felt like they were kicking us out. The food is subpar, definitely not worth the price. I have been looking into coming to Zen garden for some time now I've literally scanned the menu however when you get to the actual location things may change. Upon walking in we were greeted and asked if we wanted to dine in or take out. Of course we said Dine in! We sat at a nice comfy table with really comfortable seats. We were given some time to go over everything so for drinks we decided to order a Blooming Virgo they gave us all tea cups to be able to share and enjoy. It was great you get about 4 cups out of this order I can't wait to try another flavor this one was great. A homemade ginger ale which has a spicy but yet rich taste to it For appetizer we got 1 order of Chicken Satay with Curry Peanut Satay Sauce and let me tell you this was absolutely amazing! So good we ordered another one immediately. We also ordered vegetable pan fried dumplings. The dumplings are as great size unfortunately our were cold we did not return them however I personally wouldn't order them again. There was a lady there that gave us some suggestions which was great we got two items that she said were popular while one was great the other not so much. The entrees are family style we ordered Zen signature incredible chicken with white rice it was crunchy and had an excellent texture. Was really excited to try a vegetarian spot and we were craving for some healthy options but this place was just okay. The service was great but the food itself was way overpriced and the portions were very small. To eat we had: Hot and sour soup: not hot OR sour enough. lacked flavor and depth. Shrimp lettuce cups: way too much breading and too much crunchy toppings. I'd rather have more of the "shrimp". The lettuce was also a little brown around the edges. 3 Treasures: This was cooked well. I enjoyed the stuffed eggplant and pepper. The tofu lacked flavor, but i appreciate the bok choy that came with it. General Tso's chicken: Tasty but a little too sweet. Vegan milk tea: Really sweet as well. Overall a miss but might try again. I'm not a vegetarian but Zen Garden makes me think I might be able to survive as one (OK, let's not get crazy here). The wife wanted to try this spot since we're always looking to change it up and we were pleasantly surprised with how good the food is here. The menu is very eclectic - vegetarian Chinese food populates most of the menu but they also have meatless burgers and salads. We ate only the Chinese fare when we came and it was delicious. The mock duck was meh (I've had better at more traditional Chinese veggie spots) since it tasted like tofu skins soaked in soy sauce. Taiwanese chicken roll however was far better - crispy and the taste did sort of resemble the meat version. Double cooked pork was really good - sauce was spot on and the "meat" looked real and tasted great. Orange beef was also well done and was an excellent vegetarian version of the original dish. They also carry a large variety of teas here which are decent. Prices are going to be a bit more expensive since the use of fake meat tends to cost more than using actual meat. That being said, the service was good and this place is most definitely worth eating at even if you're not a vegetarian. read more

Food is targeted toward the white neighborhood so flavors are pretty average depending on the dish. The ambiance is aesthetically beautiful & peaceful with velvet spacious seating. Ordering and service was pretty minimal, not too often, maybe 4 visits to the table throughout the whole meal. However, my biggest issue was the harassing service at the end from my waitress. I left a cash tip from the remaining cash I had on me so they wouldn't get taxed for it through my card. I'm getting up to leave and the waitress is ranting about how her manager requires an 18% tip (which is against the law but ok) and how I wouldn't understand how hard the service industry is. This place was not my type of food. I am willing to try anything so I went there at the request of my vegan friend. Some food was recreated to resemble other food. For example " cheese" or "chicken" I think that is processed, which is the opposite of what I would want. The soup was tasteless. I guess you have to get used to it. read more

My wife and I were in the area and found Zen Garden on Yelp as Vegan option. We had a wonderful experience. They have done a nice job with the space, that was a barber shop before. It is quiet and comfortable. The food was great, much of it home made. Definitely try there herbal teas. They aren't just from a tea bag. The ginger/lemon tea was made from fresh ginger and served in a glass teapot over a flame to keep it warm. The dinner I ordered was amazing. Hand crafted tofu "skin" rolls with shredded mushrooms and tofu. It was original and definitely a lot of work to make. The owner Cathy came over and talked with us a while. First of all, delicious food and excellent service. The place was cute and clean. Our issue was with the price to food ratio. We understand times are difficult for restaurants, however times are difficult for people who go to restaurants as well. This restaurant is nice and something we kept seeing when we would drive and decided to try. This is not a place where one can stop by and be full on a budget. This is a place you would need to be ready to spend a bit. We order a pot of tea $6. It was delcious but literally just enough for 2 people and it was no free refills. Highly recommend. I went with a friend on a Saturday afternoon. Seems they have a heavy lunch crown and heavy dinner crowd but right in between they're not crowded at all. We started the meal with the rose milk tea (almond milk). It's very good and they give these cute tea cups and a candle warmed kettle on the table for refills. For non-tea drinkers: it's like a latte but subtly tastes how roses smell. We both loved it. We then got the yukka fries and edamame as appetizers. The yukka fries were addicting my good. Entres were the reccomended Peking duck buns - seitan, and double general tso - tofu and eggplant. We ended the meal with almond milk lattes and a vegan coconut cake with blueberrys. Total came out to about $45 a person. Probably won't be my go-to spot because of the price, but I will definitely be going back whenever I can. Staff was also super sweet and made sure all dietary restrictions were covered and the menu looks overwhelming but they had a big hand in recommending dishes. Judging from the reviews I thought this place would be my next favorite asian vegetarian restaurant, unfortunately Bodai in Flushing still holds that title. Although I did love the cordial, friendly hostess and servers and zen atmosphere of the restaurant, I felt the food lack a bit of flavor. Their cedar fried rice was very hard and dry. Their nuggets was quite tasty fresh out of the kitchen but if you're a slow eater like me, you'll notice the texture of the bread becomes mushy as if it was slightly undercooked. However, I did enjoy their peking duck buns a lot. It was quite expensive but worth every penny. It was possibly the best 'peking duck' I ever had. The roti canai and satay chicken was palatable. The wait for our food was painfully slow especially when the restaurant was only serving two other tables. I really wanted to love this place but sadly, it didn't satisfy my taste buds as much as I thought it would and I left unimpressed. Aside from my mediocre review, I do see a lot of potential in this restaurant so I'm hoping to come back in the near future to try it again. read more

Wow Im not a vegan but I tagged along here with my friends because they wanted to come. Now usually when i get "vegan meat", it only leaves me wanting to eat real meat/a burger after. Their "General Tso" chicken and "peking duck" taste like the real thing! The texture/taste was very similar to real meat! Was able to meet the owner here too. Since it was our first visit, we tried ordering items from each category on the menu but alas, they were sold out of the Avocado Rice Paper Roll. Sad face. (Notable lunch specials but I was here for dinner so I couldn't partake in those prices). The place is quiet and comfortable - lined with large banquette style seating or comfy arm chair seating per table. The decor and layout are exactly the same as when it was the Royal Tea House (same space) except they removed the butterflies from the tree that still sits in the center of the restaurant. The food: - roti (sans the curry). My kids just wanted the bread. It was really good. - fried vegetable dumplings, these were tasty and seared nicely. - samosas (peas, potatoes and onions inside), flavorful and good texture. - mock roast BBQ pork meat, not sure what the "mock" meat was, am thinking seitan or similar but the sauce was tasty. It did resemble both in looks and texture of the real thing. - edamame, lightly salted and steamed nicely. - guacamole and chips, everyone liked this but the tortilla chips were not homemade - side order of french fries, these seemed to be air fried and did not have the right texture of an actual fry. It was so light and airy, good but not what we expected. I did notice they were not oily. - falafel in a pita with sweet potato fries - Skip, the falafel (it's not the ones I'm used to - it was not crunchy/crumb-y/deep fried ball with chick peas, instead it resembled more of a donut shell texture; like a munchkin). - tofu with stir fried vegetables, this was very good. Not oily or greasy and the flavors were very light. The vegetables were fresh and delicious. - Bell peppers stuffed with quinoa and tomatoes, similar to a salsa mixture. I liked it but I miss the rice that is normally part of the "stuffing". Desserts: Vegan Brownie & Vanilla Ice Cream - my kiddo didn't taste the difference so they pass for flavor. I've eaten there twice and each time leave feeling satisfied with the service, food, quality, and price point of the menu. This restaurant reminds me of the quality food that Franchia in midtown Manhattan has. I'm so excited to have Zen Garden available to enjoy, so we don't have to commute to the city for a good vegan meal. It's a very interesting '70's look ...blue velvet and this thing which I believe is missing the Disco Ball....lol.., ok the food was very very good!
