This place is outstanding. There was no wait, even though we had a reservation on a Wednesday night. Staff is extremely pleasant and nice. If you're like me and absolutely love Japanese cuisine, you're going to open the menu and want one of everything here. Lots of unique dishes and rolls. A nice sake selection, along with abundant cocktails - many with a Japanese flair. We started off the the fatty tuna tartare with absolutely amazing "crackers" that are made of either seaweed or fish skin. You'll get a quick taste of wasabi. Even if you don't like wasabi, it doesn't linger and just adds a nice taste to the app. For dinner, I had the wagyu bowl, which I've wanted to try for so long. It was just mouth-watering and delicious. My wife got the American roll, but with sweet chili sauce instead of wasabi sauce. She thought it was perfect. We then decided to get the salmon truffle roll. All I can say is "wow!" Truly one of the best rolls I've ever had, with a variety of flavors, and it honestly couldn't have been more perfect. Second time here at the omakase bar and it's my favorite omakase so far! So good that I decided not to take pictures this visit so I could focus on enjoying each piece. ALL of the fish from the omakase were very fresh and tender (which is, for some reason, a rare thing in my experience). Garnishes were good and didn't overpower the fish. For example, the Kanpachi only had fried chili paste on it- nothing too experimental like the modern omakases. I'm no expert but the rice was a nice temperature in my opinion (warm but not particularly so when compared to the fish) and didn't fall apart. I really enjoyed every piece but the most memorable ones were the King Salmon (with roasted tomato- honestly the best I've had and one of the main reasons I made my second visit), Shima Aji (with ginger scallion- amazing and never had this combo elsewhere), and maybe the Madai (I forgot the garnish used on this one). The cleanliness and quality of service was what stood out the most to me here. This place is located practically in the heart of Manhattan pretty much right next to Times Square area. It was $80 for the omakase sushi which is standard. I did enjoy every piece of sushi, especially the toro. I was really excited to try Watami since it recently opened and I love to explore new restaurants in the city. Yelp has as a "full bar", not true, they don't have liquor license. Very bright, like a cafeteria, and food was ok. Wasn't bad, but not what is expected for the prices. Service was friendly but not great or efficient for an empty place. Im all for supporting local business but they need some adjustments. Plus, our sushi was "luke warm" not cold, not even room temperature. Made us wonder safety since is raw fish. Family run (2 brothers and son-in-law are the sushi chefs and sister is the hostess/waitress.) This is a just-opened 2nd branch of this family owned and run sushi restaurant (other location is on Long Island). Prices about on par with good nearby take out and eat-in sushi places but much more pleasant with fish quality equal or better. It was not crowded when we stopped by for an early Tuesday dinner.
