This sushi spot was delicious! I have been here twice now & both times did not disappoint. 1st time I came here with a couple of my girl friend's for an early dinner. We had drinks & their special rolls, with a few appetizers to share. We sat out in the patio as it was still warm out & the ambiance out there was great, very welcoming. The 2nd time I came with my family & we sat in the dining area. Our server was attentive & I felt we paid reasonable for the amount of food we received. I'd come back again to try their speciality sushi rolls & appetizers itself. I must try their dessert one time as well! It was busy both times I've gone, but never a wait. The food is good, but the whole experience is ruined by the rude pompous owners and staff. Service is hit and miss. Sometimes, you get a good server, and the next time, you'd be better off waiting on yourself. They didn't post clear specifications on their holiday gift card sale, then tried to change the policy when I told them of their mistake. I'll never go here again. We have been several times and the food is good! Getting seated at a table has been a challenge the last two times and yet there have been a couple tables for 2 open while and after we are done eating at the sushi bar. We were seated for 20 minutes and nobody talked to us or took our order. My wife went to the front desk and told them and he told a waiter in back. 5 minutes later still no help and we left. They were busy when we first got ther, but there were a few open tables by the time we left. It also appeared they had plenty of help. read more

Went for anniversary and birthday with my wife and friends and the service and all but one meal were amazing however.... My wife ordered pineapple fried rice which came loaded with corn ( does not say corn anywhere on the menu nor do you expect fried rice to have corn ) and she has a severe corn allergy. Called manager over and explained the issue and she said " you have to pay for that meal" which I didn't care and asked them to make her same meal with out the bag of frozen peas, carrots and CORN and she argued and said she couldn't do it and walked away!! I absolutely love Zen from the prompt and friendly service to some of the best rolls around. I am absolutely in love with their Bento Box meals. They come with an enormous amount of food and it's cooked to perfection. At lunch they are discounted and include everything but the soup. I've had a few of the rolls there so far and the most recent indulgence is their Badger roll( pic below). Amazing flavor and texture. As far as service I've had Jose the last 3x I've been there and he is the best server I've had anywhere. Very patient, funny and prompt. He makes Zen that much more enjoyable. We came here for a double date this past weekend and had Codey as our server who was AMAZING. Service was 10/10. He was on top of everything and had great suggestions for us for both food and drinks! The sushi itself was okay, very average. We had the kamikaze roll and the volcano roll. Both were nice and spicy, just how we like them. The edamame appetizer is a great choice! We did make reservations prior because this place always seems to be busy. On Thursdays they offer 7$ martinis which is so fun! They also have a variety of different specials which all seem like a decent deal. Love the fact that they have outdoor seating on the patio for summer! They also have seating right in front of the chefs which is also really neat so you can watch it being made right in front of you. The price of our dinner was very reasonable. This place is awesome!!! They serve genuine sushi in the small town of Beloit. As far as ambiance, it is 5 stars almost transporting you to a city Asian restaurant with style and even a sushi bar so you can watch the chef. The food is excellent. For being located in the Midwest, the food is ridiculously fresh. If you want to save some $$ go for lunch. The bento box if $9 is an awesome value. A ton of food that is very filling. Also for $13 you can get 3 types of sushi or $10 for 2 types. As far as vegetarian selection, there is plenty. I LOVE the vegetable tempura sushi....the taste, texture, and overall flavor was sooooo unexpected, I loved it. Also my favorite is the bipnbop with tofu. The sauce and crispy rice is phenomenal. I like Zen, but I don't love Zen. We are very particular on what Sushi we like and are very willing to pay for it. This place has either an owner or a head chef that doesn't see the forest through the trees. There is a sashimi or sushi dish on the west coast called "American style". Zen would do well offering this. That dish comes with mostly salmon and tuna - or hell even offer a salmon/tuna only dinner. The answer is not to order a la carte so a $25 dinner becomes $60 either. My wife doesn't want fucking sardines, hamachi, red snapper, etc... she doesn't want ANY white fish raw. They used to just up charge us and give her salmon. Now they refuse to do so, so we don't go back. Salmon is probably the cheapest fish, its sold in mass quantities and typically farm raised. Honestly - make your customers happy and quit being arrogant about how it should be served or how you want to serve it. That being said, this place has great drinks, an attentive wait staff that apologized profusely for the above issue, and their quality is great. BUT if you don't have happy customers you pretty soon have no customers. read more

Both were delicious, but the Kamikaze roll was my favorite. It had just the right amount of spice with the added jalapeño. Did an online pick up order, did the chefs choice of 7 pieces and California roll with soup and salad. I specify just fish please (didn't want octopus or salmon eggs). They took it as all fish, so i got 9 pieces, no cali roll or soup and salad. 2nd time they have screwed up my order. I don't think I will ever do take out again from this place.
