The cafe

The place was kind of hidden. I happened to see a sign while on a run. I loved the decor. The name caught my attention because I'm a red hot chili peppers fan and the nostalgia drew me in. Great coffee. The girl was super sweet. The only thing I would say is don't go here if you are in a hurry but otherwise it is worth the wait if you have time.

Weak cold coffee. Horrible. Avoid.

I will preface this review with the acknowledgment that this is the epitome of first world…read moreproblems. I actually love this place (I could have sworn I had reviewed positively before). I'm just extremely disappointed with how poor my experience was today because I had only super positive experiences previously and was looking forward to dining there this morning after sometime away, but holy hell ....today's experience has been so profoundly bad. Firstly, my husband ordered two breakfast burritos - one with bacon and the other with bacon on the side. I'll chalk this one up to miscommunication, but they put bacon in one, and bacon in the other too - and then added bacon on the side to the other and charged us $5.50 for the extra bacon. Again, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here and will be sure to communicate explicitly next time. They kindly made me a new one, but the new one had potatoes that weren't cooked thoroughly (likely to rush the food to me, so I acknowledge the difficulty here), however there was hardly any avocado. I literally had to complain again because I didn't believe there was any avocado at all. I wouldn't be as pissed if this weren't an EIGHTEEN DOLLAR breakfast burrito. Lastly, the coffee lids don't fit on the cups. We tried to put one on and ended up spilling the entire coffee. I chalked this up to an accident on our part, however another patron who observed our incident said "their lids don't fit the cup, right??" And I was like "oh so it wasn't just us??" And she was like "no, I almost spilled mine all over too." This random patron encouraged us to ask for a new cup of coffee as a result (thanks, random patron!). The Molly's team did kindly make us a new (albeit quite bitter) drink, which I appreciate. However, the lid was still an issue - it would spill out of the cup all over the rim between the cup and the lid when I'd try to take a sip, so I took off the lid entirely, but then was stuck with dealing with spills while walking around - I had to move at a snail's pace to prevent spills altogether. This was easier to deal with random leakage around the entire cup every time I'd sip with the lid on. Ultimately It was just a lose-lose with the ill fitting lid situation. All this to say - Molly's Team, yall were fantastic just a month ago. What happened? I understand food and services in the beach area stuff are often expensive and rarely good, but you guys are *too* expensive for this poor of service and quality. Two stars because at least the folks there are generally nice.

I suggested this place because they have pastries and looked like a good brunch menu. It has a nice outdoor patio which was perfect on a beautiful beach day. I ordered the chilaquiles and requested if I could have any chorizo. It's not listed as an option, but I saw that they had it on other menu items. The chilaquiles is made with a red salsa, and you can ask for their house salsa on the side. The eggs come scrambled, plus a side of sour cream and avocado. I really enjoyed it. It had just the right amount of spice. I also ordered an iced soy milk pistachio coconut latte and I couldn't leave without trying their pastries. I ordered a chocolate croissant and a chocolate chip & blueberry scone. They also offer day-old scones for $2, which I love that they offer to reduce food waste.

I got a bagel with cream cheese, eggs and sausage. Lost a point because of the syrup and the parking situation. The place was busy at 8am on Friday so prepare so that on any given time.

I have not been here since they opened in the 90's and I'm glad this spot is still alive and kicking. The portions are generous and the staff cranked out our two dishes within 15 minutes. There are tables on the outside with a view of Crystal Pier and the beach. The tables inside gives you a view of the foot traffic on the boardwalk. Parking is tight around this area. We ended up paying for parking in the next block. I got the big breakfast number one. It is generous enough for two adults. Two pancakes, two strips of crispy bacon, English Muffin, potatoes covered in ooey and gooey mounds of cheese. It was tasty and hit the spot. My wife got the breakfast burrito. I washed my food down with a cup of OJ. They also have coffee but no decaf coffee. Here's the workflow, order at the counter, get a table, the staff will deliver your meal to your table inside or outside. From the outside it looks like a laid back beach restaurant, but the food prepared here is more than meets the eye. There is a reason there is usually a long line, the food sells itself. If you get the chance put this place on your hit list. Enjoy!

It was absolutely packed when I visited, and finding a seat felt like a challenge. I eventually snagged a little desk in the corner. Sure, it was next to the bathroom, but honestly I was just happy to have my own little workspace. I ordered a lavender ube latte, half sweet, and it was so good. The flavors were perfect, and the temperature was spot on. Also, can we take a moment for their ceramic cups? So cute! For food, I tried their Cali vegan sandwich. It was okay, but I was hoping for a little more flavor. It felt a bit dry, and the fries weren't very hot by the time they arrived. Given how busy the place was, I'm guessing that may have played a role. Overall, it's a solid place to hang out, grab a coffee, or get some work done if you can find a table. Plus, it's only about a 7-minute walk to the beach, which makes it an easy stop before or after a PB stroll.

I had been here one other time and hated it, but decided to give it another try. I ordered two honey salted lattes. After waiting about five minutes, the girl called my name and handed me one hot latte. I told her I had ordered two, and she said the ticket only showed one, but then proceeded to make the other drink. She poured the hot drink into two cold cups and added ice. I asked if they had any espresso in them because the color was basically just milk. She said, "Oh, I forgot," then proceeded to pour a shot of espresso on top of the already diluted coffee. I tasted it and asked if there was any honey or salt. She said I had ordered a vanilla latte, which I didn't. She finally handed me a "salted honey latte," and it was gross and tasted like milk. I almost asked for a refund, but after three attempts, I just walked out. Don't come here--horrible.

We took a morning walk on the beach every day we were there and caught a couple of beautiful sunsets. There were many restaurants and coffee shops in very close walking distance and we were minutes from the San Diego Zoo and La Jolla. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We ate breakfast one morning on the patio facing the beach and it was nice. We also sat by the pool a couple of times and had drinks and they had fresh cookies every day which were yummy and I thought really nice. Since I did mention it was our anniversary they had a dozen roses waiting for us in our room and gave us a bottle of wine-really nice :) My only negative was that we were unable to get a room with a king size bed, they said it was based on availability even though I had booked months in advance, so that was disappointing to spend our anniversary weekend in a room with two beds.
