I really wanted to love this place .... But having been to tea houses here locally and several in San Francisco, I know what good tea time is. Sadly, this was not it. The waiting room we sat in as we waited for our table had a funky earthy smell. I looked up and saw that the ceiling had an uneven texture. I wondered if water damage/mold was a problem in this room. The hostess led us to our table shortly thereafter. She was a little rough around the edges, not warm and welcoming as you'd expect. We were seated and noticed both of our tea cups were dirty, so we requested new ones. Our waitress was nice and she explained the offerings when we asked. Just fyi, it would have been nice to get the breakdown when our waitress greeted us. That's basic. Adults pay $60 for tea and 1 serving of each treat, and kids pay $40. We ordered the orange passion fruit tea. It was good. I wish they offered hot chocolate for the younger kiddos. The sandwiches were so disappointing. They were super tiny and had minimal filling. The cream cheese sandwich was good, curry chicken was decent, peanut butter and jam was ok, but the foie gras and smoked salmon weren't edible. The pastries were also underwhelming, with the exception of the lemon tart. That little lemon goodness was decadent and fluffy, and had a delicious crumbly crust. The apple puff pastry wasn't crispy and the crust was soft and soggy. The vanilla cupcake was too dense and bland, but the icing was delicious. The chocolate mousse wasn't creamy or fluffy, but dense like thick icing and needed to be sweeter. The scones were hard and cold, and not even layers of whipped butter could fix them. We wanted to go for our six month anniversary last month but they are not open on Tuesday for dinner so we decided to go here for our seven month on Thursday. We particularly wanted to eat here since they hired a chef from Republic in Takoma Park which was our belated best friend's favorite placs.All we can say is this our new favorite. The service is great and the environment is lovely. They were very prompt, friendly, and answered our questions well. Since it was a nice evening we chose to eat outside which was lovely and socially distant. They recommended we look around inside which is a lovely historic environment. Accessibility for those with mobility issues isn't the best but from other reviews it is clear they are working on it. It was happy hour when we arrived so we ordered a cocktail with cranberry and the Toll House Pilsner along with the ribeye skewers, wings, and mushroom escabeche which were 30% off. We then had our main courses which were the trout and ribeye and they were both among best we've ever had, with the trout being the most remarkable. To drink with dinner we had the Two Roads Roadsmary's Baby and the Black Flag Busy Bee pumpkin beers. For dessert we had the berries and cream and chocolate cake along with a hot toddy and a bourbon apple cider to drink. Thanks so much for a remarkable experience! It was a perfect time of year to eat outside with the foliage and the fall decorations were all lovely. In the future we will try dining inside in the restaurant, tavern, or cafe. We look forward to returning in the future and told my mother we would bring her for her 60th birthday as she only does outdoor dining and would love this place. read more

This review is for the Cafe. I really debated between 3 and 4 stars. We were meeting a friend for lunch and unfortunately the other areas of the restaurant don't open until 4:00. There is a small parking lot, with a generous number of handicapped spots, and a larger lot across Dale Drive. The Cafe has no table service. You're given a menu at the front desk upon arrival and invited to find a table. When you are ready you place your order at the front desk. We went down a small flight of steps leading to a room overlooking the gardens and with a homey fireplace separating it from the bar area. We were able to find a server to ask what the soup of the day was, what the quiche was, and how to order a glass of wine and a beer. Turns out you order beverages back at that magic front desk and pick them up there. There are carafes of water and plastic cups on the bar for self serve. Your order is brought out to a table near the entrance to the bar and a device you are given blinks when your order is ready. At the "delivery" table are forks, knives, and napkins, again for self serve. The ambiance is beautiful, warm and cozy with multiple smaller dining rooms, large windows, the fire place, the gardens. The down side is the food is average at best. The portions are generous but the Caesar salad was just average. Rich and our friend both ordered the Shrimp Po Boy which was on a sub roll with shrimp, lettuce and cucumber, but needed more sauce and the shrimp were not crispy with the breading falling off. There was a mound of fries which could have been good but were not hot, just warm. Such a beautiful venue if the food were just a little better. read more

I'm a life long silver spring resident and finally made my way to Zinnia this past weekend. Overall it was a great experience! Very unique and charming venue, friendly attentive staff, and a solid brunch menu makes this a fun local spot. The vibes of the place were probably the best part of the experience. The venue is a house with rustic interior and it felt like we were dining in someone's home for tea time. There are plenty of rooms which make for a great private dining situation, and everywhere else was bustling with a lively crowd. Our server was super friendly and welcoming, and gave us good suggestions for the menu. The food was good but not extraordinary. The eggs benedict could've used more hollandaise, though the salmon pastrami was flavorful. The menu had a lot of options though, will have to get the shrimp and grits next time. This place is so cool! The garden is beautiful, and the old building that the restaurant/cafe is in is full of character, with dining space in several rooms and a downstairs tavern (staff is happy to help guide you). The elevated American food is amazing, with high quality ingredients and great execution of flavors. The highlight here is definitely their desserts and pastries. We split three across the table and we loved all of them! There was almost a fight over who got to finish the chocolate crunch dessert.... These were made even better upon learning that the pastry chef is an absolute lady boss at the top of her game. Hope to get her number next time! read more

My bridal shower was hosted here and it was the most beautiful day! Big shout out to the event coordinator, who I know was immensely patient and helpful with my shower host -- the day went off without a hitch. We had the whole room in the back to ourselves with buffet apps and entrees and a small bar with wine and prosecco. The food was delicious and there was more than enough space for our 30 guests. I'm just gonna say this once, okay maybe four times- but if you like shrimp and grits, GET THEM HERE!!! They were the best I've ever had. In a spicy-ish bbq sauce with cheesy grits and perfectly cooked shrimp. We sat in the garden during a Saturday brunch and had mimosas and enjoyed the flowers and little pond. I will say that nearly every table has 6+ chairs around a coffee table, or a table that's low. It's totally perfect for a group happy hour, but difficult to eat at because you're bending over. There were no regular 2 or four tops in the garden that are prime for eating. Our server was adorable. It was her first day- I wish I'd remembered her name but she was so sweet and attentive! She recommended the shrimp and grits and was not wrong! The inside is beautiful and I can't wait to go back and try the dark speak-easyish bar in the basement! It's just like the old Mrs K's but better. The bar upstairs had been completely redone and looked beautiful. It's not cheap- and for that, we'll probably stick to reservations for special occasions. There are so many things that were done right to renovate this lovely venue and to make it up to date sand modern. No matter where you decide to sit, be it one of the elegant dining rooms or the beautifully appointed sports bar you'll be sure to enjoy yourself. To experience the vast variety of of entrees that you have to choose from, in addition to scrumptious appetizers and desserts you will need to visit this little jewel more than once. We went for dinner on Father's Day. Our party was 6 adults and a child. The restaurant is a formerly Mrs K's Tollhouse. Garden is exquisitely landscaped with lots of outdoor tables. There's spacious indoor dining space. For drinks, we had Summer white sangria, Julep, Kingston Heat, vodka martini. Two Starters, Burrata, seafood chowder and mussels. highlights of Mains are definitely the Fried Chicken, scallops and the Chef's special blackened catfish in crawfish etouffe sauce. The service is good but a bit slow. It was not crowded so am not sure why food took a bit of time including kids dish and desserts. Finally stopped by here for an early dinner on a Sunday night. I've been admiring the garden and the colorful vintage umbrellas on the patio tables out front for some time now, so I'm glad I finally got to try it out. Because it was very hot, we sat inside in the main dining room. I believe the garden, dining room and tavern all have different menus so just be aware and ask for clarification before you are seated if you're looking for something specific. I got the meatball special which was delicious in a rich tomato sauce; however if was a very small portion as it only had 4 tiny meatballs which I wouldn't consider a full dinner on its own. My friend enjoyed the gnocchi-which she thought was delicious and we both got specialty cocktails. The ambience and service were great, but the food was not and the cost was way too high for what we received. They charge $60 per adult which gets each person six finger sandwiches, many with very scant filling. You also get five small desserts and your choice of tea. We found most of the desserts to be unexceptional. The lemon tart was probably the best of them. Be aware that a 20% gratuity is automatically added to all bills. This is my second time here with the family, and 2nd time's not the charm. Counter service was not great. Came at 9 am and the young man at the counter made some snide comments that my sister witnessed after we finished ordering. My husband had asked how many pieces of bacon per order and they didn't know. He just wanted to know so he can order the appropriate number. He just wanted bacon and eggs. The young man also told my husband to read the directions on the table when he asked something. It was his first time here and the staff really wasn't welcoming and helpful. You'd think being in the hospitality business, people would be nice. It's really too bad, I know they're owned by the same people as Takoma Bev and we've always had the best service at Takoma Bev, so I was really surprised to get this kind of treatment here. We'll go to Takoma Bev next time, since service is not friendly here. I had the Sausage and Egg Sandwich and it was fine. The bacon was good. My sister had them cook her quiche more as the filling wasn't quite set. It was still a little watery coz of the butternut squash. You really to roast or cook the butternut squash before adding to the quiche to release and evaporate the water in it beforehand. My rating is for the cafe experience only; I haven't come for food. I frankly had been a bit anxious about trying it due to all the confusion about their different "rooms" and how people say they ended up with reservations for the wrong room and ended up on weird chairs and things like that. But I decided to try it out because a) I don't have good places to work during the week other than Starbucks when I want to get out of my house and b) someone on the MoCo subreddit had said Zinnia was good for working. I hadn't even known they had a cafe until then. I was still a bit nervous on where to actually go, but basically if you park in the parking lot or across the street where it says Mrs. K's toll house parking (Zinnia apparently used to be Mrs. K's -- this is legit Zinnia parking), and come in through the front door, you'll see the cafe counter straight away. When they have cafe hours, you order at the counter (they do have a kitchen you can order from as well as ready-made pastries) and sit anywhere you want. And there are a lot of great choices on where to sit: The parlor looks like your grandma's living room. I guarantee your grandma had a couch like theirs. Mine sure did. This room isn't great for working, but is great for weekend knitting or conversation, there are a handful of couches. The natural light here is ok but not as good as in the dining rooms. We sat here today, when it turns out they were going to start serving brunch in the dining rooms at 10am. The main dining area is split into two rooms, both with very good natural light, and a bar area between them. There are many tables, both lower dining tables and higher cocktail tables. My favorite is the high top by the window, so please leave that one for me :) During the work week they get a decent working crowd but there is more than enough seating across the two dining rooms for the crowd. As far as the coffee goes, it's pretty good. They have the same Counter Culture coffee as Kaldi, which I like, but they don't have splenda, only stevia, so I would say Kaldi wins on that front. But Zinnia has the advantage for working of being a) MUCH quieter than Kaldi and b) easy free parking. Kaldi will probably continue to be my #1 knitting spot on weekends, but Zinnia is now my #1 working spot during the week. Someday, I may actually order lunch while I'm there and then I'll report back. I will say that a bit more explanation of how things work here on their website couldn't go amiss, and definitely update info that the cafe open seating ends at 10am Sunday. (I'm not sure about Saturday, I should have asked). I will give them props though for offering to let us sit in the tavern part if there wasn't room in the parlor, but fortunately the parlor emptied out before 10. All in all, the staff appears to be working very hard and it's a cool place. I'm sure I will be here a lot. read more

I went to catch the World Cup game here. Since I have never been here before I wasn't sure where to book. The restaurant, garden and tavern have separate reservations. The restaurant was super chick and open floor plan. Very modern look. The bar is nice and long with plenty of seating. Unfortunately there are no TVs in the restaurant. To watch any tv events you must book the tavern. I was lucky that I was able to snag a seat at the bar. Even though I had a restaurant reservation. I had their burger with fries. It was delicious. I went during brunch on a Sunday. The bartender mentioned the skewers were delicious. I am definitely trying that next time. For brunch you can get a bottle of champagne and mixers to your liking. Sadly they didn't have pineapple. So I stuck to grapefruit. I was able to watch the Sunday World Cup game comfortably. The crowd was also nice and not roudy. They also had a live band which finished their set at 2pm right when the game was starting. I imagine they started at noon. I had some Paloma's that were delicious. The parking lot is narrow. Just keep that in mind. I had a great time here and will definitely be back to try dinner. read more

We have visited the garden a couple of times for appetizers and drinks. We visited the bar last week for happy hour, and we were blown away! We had an excellent and knowledgeable bartender, Alanna. She can make an excellent cocktail! We started with the Ribeye skewers amazing! - the chimichuri sauce was fresh and boasting flavor!! The show stopper was the mussels - super tasty tomato broth and fresh mussels. We asked for extra bread to finish the sauce. The burrata is served with a fabulous zesty sauce. We finished with the chocolate cake and ice cream. It was delicious and not super rich / dense which is nice! Ambiance was beautiful with the gas fire and decorations for Christmas. Our book club has been meeting here for months, and it's become the perfect place to eat, drink, and gossip about our latest reads--especially the smutty ones--without worrying about anyone eavesdropping on our more colorful discussions. We've had the pleasure of sitting outside by the firepits on those lovely days when the weather is just right, and it really sets the tone for a fun, laid-back brunch. There's also a downstairs area with a speakeasy vibe--think cozy, dark, and intimate, but with a slight "dungeon" feel that somehow makes it all the more charming. The mood is just perfect for sipping cocktails and digging into some seriously tasty food. Speaking of food, it's always on point. Everything we've tried has been delicious, and the menu offers a great variety that suits all of our tastes. And the drinks--wow! Potent but well-balanced, just the way we like them. We've definitely found our go-to place for both food and drinks. Whether we're seated around the fire or tucked away in the speakeasy, we can always count on this spot to give us the perfect atmosphere for our monthly meet-up. **DON NOT BOOK an EVENT AT ZINNIA** I rarely leave a negative review but our experience with Zinnia was so awful that I hope by leaving this review that others will be spared of our experience. We booked Zinnia for a private event. From the beginning to the end we encountered problems. Shortly after signing the contract the event manager stopped working for the company. Then we started working with Justin who was very unresponsive.   But what was most disappointing was what happened the day of our event.  Our event coordinator arrived to find that the restaurant area to be used for the event was actually dirty. The tables were not arranged as had agreed upon, and it went down hill from there. The service was awful,  I mean really bad.  We were to have what was described as a beautiful "cheese and fruit fruit board" display and an "appetizer station", etc.  Instead several slices of cheese were put on a plate without crackers, bread etc.and no appetizer station. When we questioned this, we were told that this was what we had ordered, and the bread or crackers was extra.  The caesar salad course was served 20 minutes late and the next course was a disaster.  The chicken and the beef were dry and the sides were not served at the same time as the main course.   I followed up with the owner, Chris Brown after the event and he provided may excuses for all the short comings and offered a partial refund for all the errors, but then he never made true of his promise and processed any payment.  It is months after the event and despite many follow-ups we are still waiting to receive the refund he offered. This is clearly no way to run a business and I can't help but think Zinnia has financial problems in addition to business practices that I don't see as ethical.  There are many great venues to have an event in the DMV area but I would not put Zinnia on the list. read more

Even though this restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood, It is definitely a hidden gem. Parking lot is a little small but there's extra parking across the street and in the neighborhood. Service was very nice, we shared a bottle of wine among 5 friends and all the dishes we ordered were excellent. I had the chicken that was marinated in some kind of wine sauce and it was a huge portion, very flavorful. The beet and argula salad we had was excellent, so with the burrata. The dining room is so beautiful, it's definitely worth making a reservation. Later we went to get another drink downstairs in the tavern. The parking lot is a little small but you are able to park on the streets as well. We didn't make a reservation but was able to be seated immediately in the Tavern Bar area. This restaurant is one of the absolute gems right outside of the downtown Silver Spring. My spouse and I decided to try it out for a birthday dinner since we drive past it on the way out of downtown Silver Spring and it did not disappoint. First, the atmosphere is incredibly unique. There are approximately four areas of this establishment and every area has its own flair. We sat inside the main dining room as reservations for outdoor seating was unavailable in March. The main dining room had an eclectic atmosphere with large open windows for natural light, high vaulted ceilings and antique-looking decor. Each of the other dining areas, which we explored briefly, all had their own flare. We planned to return and try sitting outside on the patio garden portion. Second, the food was delicious. Extremely flavorful and each dish was thoughtfully crafted and presented beautiful. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, and the seafood bouillabaisse and scallops as our main courses. The seafood was fresh and perfectly prepared. Even the cocktail was on point. Great food paired with the vibrant atmosphere made the birthday dinner one to remember. The waitress also comped a glass of wine since she didn't know it was my spouse's birthday until the end of the dinner. We didn't inform her so it was a kind gesture to do that. Came here for a birthday dinner (mine) and it did not disappoint. It is now my favorite restaurant in Silver Spring. The gardens are just beautiful. What an amazing place to sit for a drink and a meal. We had the burrata, the trout, and the gnocchi and all were delicious. The one thing I thought could have been better was the cocktail I had (which is no longer on the menu), but since I've only had one cocktail there, I won't offer any broader opinions on their cocktails.
