Being born and raised in Hawai'i, everytime I come back to visit I usually stop by Zippy's to either get their 1) Zip Pack 2) Spaghetti or 3) Fried Chicken. It was always comfort food and pretty cheap as well. Sometimes the lines at this location can get REALLY long. Greetings. I just want to share with everyone my experience at Zippy's in Nuuanu, next to Brothwicks mortuary. I was wanting to have a regular saimin on my way to an appointment. My time was limited but I felt I had enough time to have something to eat. I approached the counter at about 2:30pm and their appeared to be two windows to place orders and one window to pick up orders. It looked like there was one person in front of me finalizing her order. It also looked like there were about two people waiting to pick up their order. What was odd was I waited for about 5 minutes before someone at the pickup window finally asked if they could help me. It was not even busy. So I went up to the clerk and politely asked how long it would take to get a regular saimin. The server said about ten minutes. I looked at my watch and decided that I did not have enough time so I politely said thank you but I don't have enough time. I turned around and started to walk out and thought I would use the restroom on the way out. I was in the restroom about 30 seconds when suddenly an employee outside the door started to bang on the door and yell, hey I need to clean the bathroom. This went on constantly, even though there was not any sign outside about bathroom cleaning in progress. The banging continued as well as the yelling for about another 30 to 45 seconds. I completed washing my hands and walked out of the bathroom and everyone was starring. The Zippy's employee was insisting that he needed to clean the bathroom. I don't understand the impatience. The conclusion that I come to is that the counter clerk was not happy that I did not place an order and used the restroom. The other employee was just trying to shoo me out of the bathroom. There is a sign that says the restroom is for customers only. I will offer that I frequent Zippy's on average once a week for the last ten years or more. Thats roughly $8000.00 in purchases in the last ten years. I definitely feel that I am entitled to be called a customer of Zippy's. I have purchased many meals from Zippy's since I have been a local resident of Oahu all of my life. The treatment that I got from the employees of Zippy's was absolutely rude and un-called for. As a result, I will never dine at any Zippy's again. Today, I went to Bale's sandwich shop and they had a better menu, healthier choices, cheaper prices and much better service. I have resolved myself and said so long to Zippy's as far as dinning choices goes and will never spend a single dollar in a Zippy's restaurant again. I regularly come to this Zippys and am always greeted well with great service. This day was no different! Though they were out of both Shoyu Chicken and Spare Ribs, I opted for my usual order of Korean Chicken. The wait time was very little, and the staff continually stopped by to make sure I was okay. My servers Margie and Lynn were amazing and made sure that I was great throughout my meal. Definitely coming back again, not only out of convenience, but because of their aloha hospitality. P.S. The bathroom having to be buzzed open by a counter worker did somewhat upset me being that I had to go really bad & had to wait even just a few more seconds for that! If I didn't have to pee so bad, I guess I wouldn't mind. The fast food side is on the small side. it does make it hard to dine there. The interior & exterior of the store looks beautiful. He even said that the place had been renovated in part for handicap access. Noisy! Hooo the noisy. Families, kids screaming. Shaddap your kids and make them sit down and eat for Chrissake! What ever happened to manners you loud, rude, impolite brats? And that goes for your kids too! I ordered a somen salad which was more salad than somen. Should not have been such a discrepancy. Should have been half half, if you ask me. Pointless to serve so little somen. From a merchant's point of view, somen is cheaper than the "Nalo style greens" and I would have appreciated more of it. When waitress brought 2 take home bowls for him he halved portioned the dish into each container. I suggested that one container was for the min and the other container was actually for the soup so that the rest of the food wouldn't get soggy. He took everything out and reportioned it with the soup only in one container. Spilling half of the soup all over the newly renovated tables. Dumbass. I've been doing so many 1 star reviews lately. I think I'm watching too many foodie shows and they're making me a little snobby. But, recently, I just want something delicious if I'm eating out. Not something I can make at home, or something that seems like little to no effort was put into cooking it. So, since I didn't get my turkey fix satiated during Thanksgiving, I ordered the hot turkey sandwich. It was awful. It was literally just some deli meat turkey on wheat bread with gravy on top. There was no veggies, no garnish, no sauce, no mayo, no anything. It was awful. I was hoping it was going to be like the Bob's Big Boy (RIP) turkey sandwich, but was very disappointed. The service was also so bad. Kenny was our waiter, and he was going out for dinner, so the other waitress tried to take over for his section, but she had too many tables, so no one came the whole meal to check on us, to refill our water, or to refill my tea. I purposely got a large for the free refills, but there weren't any refills. Kenny also got my husband's order wrong. Zippy's is ono, from evah since! I've been eating at Zippy's since hanabata days in the late '70s, definitely a favorite for local food. I had the pastrami sandwich for the first time. It won't be the last. The pastrami, the rye bread, mozzarella and the sauce...it was very flavorful. I'm a local boy, and usually get a plate lunch, but I'm glad I went with the sandwich. Since our favorite one is closed for renovations (the one on King next to Washington Middle School), we headed over to the one on King next to Piikoi Street. It was so crowded; people were circling around the parking lot like vultures just waiting for a spot. So, I suggested we head over to the one on Vineyard. Secretly I was happy that this one was too crowded, because I like the one on Vineyard better. Fortunately, my wife could not see the happiness in my eyes behind my dark glasses. We arrived at Vineyard Zippy's and were promptly seated by a friendly hostess. I ordered the Zippy's Omelette, which consists of cheddar cheese, Portuguese sausage, onion, bell pepper, celery, and tomato. It also came with choice of toast, white or brown rice, or hash browns. The omelette was delicious and cooked perfectly. I should have ordered brown rice, because the hash browns were slightly undercooked; I guessed they were stored in a freezer and had not thawed sufficiently. My wife ordered a Belgian Waffle. She also ordered strawberries and whipped cream to go with it. She liked the waffle, but was disappointed that the strawberries were frozen strawberries and looked nothing like the ones displayed on the menu. The service was friendly and efficient. I would have given them five stars if not for the frozen strawberries. Change them to fresh, or clearly indicate in writing that they'll be frozen on the menu, and I'll upgrade my review to five stars. read more

Okay this is my favorite zippys to go to in the whole island ONLY bc the restaurant area of the zippys is open 24 hours and you can go there in the middle of the night if you're hungry. I always come here for salad and they always have the best salads ! I also think their salad is homegrown aqua phonics that are Waaaaay more healthy than most GMO vegetables grown these days .. And only Hawaii does that for their locals and their local zippys , it's so wonderful . OMG and their desserts are SOO good but kinda unhealthy , same with their Portuguese bean soup .. Oh well and their customer service is excellent ! Only downside is they're kinda slow when it's rush hour but other than that .. My favorite midnight place to go for food . Last year , this location was closed for 2 months due to renovation. Since reopening things haven't been quite right. The last few visits it seemed they hired all new staff and everyone was still learning. This visit my child's pizza was rock hard - Like someone had microwaved it too long. My usual - Korean Fried Chicken was also overcooked and tough. As if it was fried, put on the side for a long time then refried again. Really great service tonight!! Called to order take out, person who answered was exceptionally friendly, and repeated my order correctly. Upon pick up, Joy assisted me at the drive up window and was super friendly, with a big smile and called me by name. For about a week my 3 year old daughter has been saying that she wants to go to Zippys. So last night we decide to take her to the Vineyard zippys since we live so close. We got seated right away and the server came and took our drink order. My daughter decided that she wanted to have chicken nuggets with fries and corn. Since it was a special treat we decided to let her have a fruit punch. I ordered the beef strogonoff, and my bf ordered the beef cutlet. Our food came out pretty fast. The food was hot and fresh. My daughter devoured her nuggets and corn(she loves her veggies). My strogonoff was soooo good. The meat was soft. My bf's beef cutlet was sooo good. The outside was crispy while the inside was soft. Since I ordered the complete meal I could get a dessert. So I asked what kind of pies they had, she said, pumpkin, lemon meringue, and custard...my daughter answered for me...LEMON. Hahahaha. So when the dessert came I gave a piece to my daughter and she loved it. I usually don't like to order lemon meringue's because of the surprise of tartness. But I was really surprised at how good this lemon meringue was. It wasn't tart at all!!! Definitely a must try. The only reason I gave this place a 4 star and not a 5 star is because our server was a bit slow after serving our food. It came to the point that my boyfriend actually waked up to the soda fountain to refill my fruit punch because I had been waiting forever. The parking lot can get a little hectic when its crowded..They do have a back lot but after looking through the first lot and not finding anything, you would have to go around the entire block just to get into the back lot..((if it doesn't make sense, you'll understand when you have to go through it.)) If you want to order from the bakery, you have to get in the main line and still wait for then to pack your goodies. And the MALASADAS don't come out remotely warm. They get 3 stars because food is still okay, even after running back and forth from the pick up window and my table. I would probably try the drive thru next time. read more

So, who isn't a fan of Zippy's? When I was in Highschool I didn't eat meat, which made ordering at Zippy's a chore. I had to rotate between a mushroom omelette, saimin, and trying their vegetarian options, which I found disappointing. Now, I eat meat and my experience is a lot better! I'm mostly a fan because it's convenient and a tradition, not because I am or have ever been "wow-ed" by their food. Everything is pretty good. My usuals are the club sandwich, chili frank, and zipmin. Once in a while they make a good teri beef burger or teri burger, but I've noticed the execution is inconsistent, so I've stopped ordering it. I think my real problem with Zippy's isn't even a problem with them at all, it's just that my family and friends like it so much or find it so irresistibly convenient that I find myself there about once a week! I am out of new things to try and have eaten everything there at least three times over. So you see, it's not Zippy's fault I'm giving them 3 stars. It's really my own. Anyway, they are accommodating for groups and service is okay. During peak hours it's a madhouse, especially parking and dine-in. Depending on your server, service is also a bit spotty. read more

OMG I miss Zippy's sooo much! I came back from Hawaii and had chicken katsu at some place called Hawaiian Drive Inn (ha!!) and it was awful. Over here in CA, we have other places like L&L and Ono's that are the best Hawaiian fast foods here but Zippy's is just off the charts. The chicken katsu was prepared perfectly and I love their mini portions. Only thing is that the chili that I've read and heard so much about wasn't mindblowing at all. It's Vineyard location is certainly one of its crown jems and offers its stellar menu with good service and a convenient location. The Vineyard location features the same menu that you would come to expect of all of the Zippy's locations. Let's be honest, you ultimately come here for one thing: the chili. Is it the greatest thing you will ever eat, probably not. However, it is certainly top notch along with their well-cooked fried chicken. When it comes to locations, the Vineyard was one of the first to under renovations and features a sun-filled atrium for outdoor seating along with a very comfortable indoor dining area for a restaurant experience. For large or small groups, the seating areas are perfect for the occasion. Service is generally good with the staff being quick and attentive. The menu prices aren't as cost-effective as they once were, however they do offer some good deals from time to time as well as specials. All in all, the Vineyard location is one of the better in the chain, will you be wow-ed. Probably not. Will you be content, you bet you will. read more
