I placed an online order at the Zippy's Waipio; something that I've done many times before. It's always been super easy to place an order on the app and have it put in a locker for pick-up. However this time, almost an hour went by, past the estimated ready time and I didn't receive a message that the order was ready which I thought was weird. I came to Zippy's in person and met with a cashier named "Prudence". I informed her that I placed an online order and it's been almost an hour and I still hadn't received a text whether the food was ready or not. Prudence laughed at me and motioned towards my family's order which was set off on the side. She said that I needed to come pick up my order. I told her that I selected the option to have it placed in the locker and to notify me when my family's order was ready. She argued with me saying that it's my responsibility to have had came and grabbed it myself. She continued to all the lockers were full, however I looked over at the lockers (right next to the registers) and not a single locker was occupied. The food was cold by the time we had gotten it. If I hadn't came in person to check on the order, it doesn't seem like Prudence would have notified me at all. She didn't apologize, argued, and made it seem like it was my fault for not checking in with them; which shouldn't be the case if you choose the option to have your food placed in a locker. My girlfriend and I dine here often because we are always in the mood for comfort food and Zippy's is very consistent in what they serve so you know what you are getting when ordering. My girlfriend had here usual won ton min and I hade fried noodles. You can't go wrong when ordering Zippy's saimin, the noodles are always cooked just right so you almost never get overcooked noodles. The staff at this location is wonderful. Our hostess (I forgot aunties name) was so sweet and so was our attentive waitress Sarah. She checked on us often and refilled my cup before I asked lol. Offered us dessert but also didn't make me and my mother feel rushed. I have a Velcro dog as well in her bag and she asked if she needed anything. Very sweet. For Father's Day, both my brother and I are empty nesters, so he and his wife and I decided to go out for lunch instead of making a cook-out like we usually do on special days. So off we went, reached there about 10:15am and gasped at the amount of people waiting outside for a table. We all said the heck with that, and went back to Waipahu to our back up, Zippy's Waipio. Told my brother to make a reservation on their website as we were driving back to Waipahu and he did have confirmations, but of course the wait time was stating 40-60 minutes... Well, we all knew it was a special day so we decided to be patient and wait. As my sister in law has a recent disability and requires the use of a walker, once we got our seating after just about 20 minutes (whew... thank goodness the wait times on the website were optimistic), the host walked us to the left upon the host desk and to the booth just past the small service area so that she could put her fold up walker out of anyone's way and she could seat comfortably right by that service area. Wow, this is just about 11 25 am and the crowd in the dining area was packed! The nanas who waitressed and the two male helpers were really busting their ass and inside of myself i was congratulating them for their hard work and still keeping a happy and smiling cheerful face! I ordered the large saimin and mini-plate of korean fried chicken, hoping that this combination will be enough to satisfy this big man (aka: blalah, haha) appetite. I asked for toss salad and brown rice to go with the Korean fried chicken plate. We waited and talked story... but funny as our waitress brought only my two dishes first. I felt bad to eat so I did not until they also received their dishes (a chili loco moco, a regular hamburger loco moco and a small bowl of saimin). Yes, their meals came about 12 minutes latER but i have to take into the consideration how busy it was... I could see through the pass way the kitchen help also busting their behinds as they cooked the meals for both the restaurant and take-out sides. You could see them wiping the sweat off their foreheads as it was hot (i know as I used to work in the restaurant industry decades ago). I also realized our smiling waitress made an error and gave me white rice which of course i did not eat, so she came back with a small plate of a scoop of brown rice and apologized to me for her error. Man, the large saimin had so much toppings and were generous with it! Though there were the longER wait times and a few minor errors like giving me white rice instead of brown and the odd times their meals came out about 12 minutes later after mine had arrived...I still feel the rating should be a 5 instead of a 4 that I wanted to give...as I took into consideration that this was Father's Day and it was packed! Shopping is definitely cardio as I came to Waipio to the Hawaii Okinawa Center Craft Fair and parked right beside across ZIPPY'S the open lot dedicated for the craft fair overflow parking and decided to walk over and shop and did so on the return and decided to stop and ZIPPY'S. Very nice location with signs very easy to read and loved that Napoleon's Bakery was open and operating so that I didn't need to wait in the takeout line to make my purchase though I did that anyways lol! Not feeling anything fried since I got some Andagi as well it was the Spaghetti plate with meat sauce. The service is very nice and yes they asked for my Zipster number which is very nice as I always forget to do so and waited for my order at tables which was nice and clean and a easy spot to rest and recover after a long day. Worked a long day and decided to get a burger and fries and a Mac salad for dinner. I online order so when I drive there it will be ready. I put it in at 7:47pm. I get there around 8:05 and no text that is ready. I sit in my car...at about 20 minutes I go inside and sit down and see my name still on the board that they are making it....50 minutes later, I get the text that it is ready. Since I was planning to be in Waipio today, I checked beforehand what eating establishments might be open early. Zippy's came up as opening at 6:00 am, and I remembered I had wanted to someday try their Chili Moco, which I had only heard about. That someday would be today. The counter staff wasn't the friendliest, but then again, Zippy's has never impressed me that way. The wait was longer than I expected, but I factored in how busy the kitchen must be with call-in orders and with the person in front of me ordering several items. When my order was finally called, I sat at a table and lifted the lid of the nicely packed meal in anticipation. I wasn't disappointed. If you've had loco moco before but not a chili moco, just think of it as a loco moco with chili substituted for the usual brown gravy. Service and quality has really gone down, while prices have gone through the roof here. Paid $18.75 plus tax for a shoyu pork plate. First they skimp on the bag (small bag where the plate barely fit and was sideways) and then they didn't close the lid good (was half open). So, when I got home and picked up the bag, gravy came pouring out of the bag, all over my truck seat and my foot. Took it in my house and opened it. The shoyu pork was bone dry (no sauce). The side with the rice and mac salad was soaking in liquid. The Mayo mixed with the sauce and was all over it. Rice and Mac salad was ruined. I don't like mayo on my rice and the salad tasted like plain boiled macaroni because the taste was washed away by the sauce. This is one very expensive plate and there isn't that much pork. I could have eaten at a nice sit down restaurant for the price I paid. Shout out to the team that worked the Halloween night shift. It was around 830 pm we placed our phone order and when we got there it was totally packed. Long line but a majority was waiting for orders up. As the time passed by for the next 5-10 minutes the team that worked the front pick up area was on a roll, plates and drinks were being completed and called out. No one was fussing or frazzled. It was awesome watching each of them hustle plus the back of the house. It was pretty cool. Growing up on the North Shore, we've made countless trips through Waipio, the Zippy's has been a steadfast stop for my family and me for as long as I can remember and even still today. The place hasn't changed much in twenty years, I still remember being so excited when the aunty's gave me a nickel to get a prize from the machine BEFORE dinner...and it's still there today! The food at Zippy's is pretty consistent throughout all Zippy's. My favorites are the Korean fried chicken or chicken trio. Although, I do have to say that I used to love wuntun min but now I'm really skeptical ordering it from any Zippy's because I feel like, lately, they can't hit that right temperature. As far as the servers and service, no complaints. From the to-go side to the restaurant side, I have no complaints. The decor and building hasn't changed in my lifetime, and I wonder how I would feel if it does change? Updates are coming soon since the Mililani one is under construction and I can only guess what the new vibe is gonna look like; it's only a matter of time. When we finally finished eating, we waited to ask for takeout containers. About 10 minutes later, Sharon reappears from the kitchen. She finally looks at us & yells from across the floor, "Are you ready for the bill now?" Doesn't ask if I'm a Zipster Rewards member or if we need containers to take home food or even if we wanted to order dessert etc. At this point, I'm over it & just tell her to bring the bill with 2 containers. She does so & disappears again. I write down my phone # on the bill & wait a couple more minutes before having to flag down the elderly male worker there (Leo?) to give the bill with my phone # on it back to Sharon to redeem any rewards. Leo finds her & she pulls up my member accnt but when she brings it back she says there's nothing to redeem. Weird. So I give her my debit card thinking maybe I don't have enough points because I just signed up in Sept. She runs the card while I'm signing into my Zipster app. Lo & behold I see I have over 3000 zipcoins! So I go back to Sharon before signing the final bill & ask her how come she didn't redeem any of my obvious rewards. She tells me, "Oh because you didn't request to redeem any specific rewards." I was confused & replied, "Isn't that the reason why we give you our telephone #? To see if we're eligible to redeem rewards to credit to our final bill?" She said, "Oh no..customers have to request it & specify that they want to redeem rewards because we can't just redeem it for them if they don't specifically request it. Once we run the card we normally can't apply the reward." I was just about to ask for her manager because now I know she's making things up as we go. She then starts getting flustered so she said she'd void the original transaction to my card then apply the reward to the new bill charge & told me that the voided transaction should be refunded to my bank in 1-2 business days. Duh..that's automatic considering it's the merchant's error not the customer--right? All this could've been avoided had Sharon done her job right the first time while pulling up my accnt for my eligible rewards! This shows that Sharon just didn't want to deal with the hassle of the voided charge & refund. It's not my fault she's LAZY! I finally sign the corrected bill then collected my voided/new receipt copies & walked out. Monday morning around 8am. Waited about 5-6 mins before being acknowledged for a seat. Noticed 2 other tables filled. Guessing the staff was busy preparing something in the back. Noise level was a little more than a whisper. 3 zip mins, 2 burgers w/fries & waters all around. Food served within 10 mins. Broth seemed a little bland compared to what we all remembered but it still hit the spot. Drinks refilled upon our request. Disappointed that I forgot to use my zipster rewards app & server didn't mention it either. read more
