I went here for the first time with a big pile of things to dry clean. I was impressed with their professional appearance and organized orientation for first time customers. The keychain tags are a great idea (I'm always losing those stupid receipts....), their rates are straightforward, and their goal is to get you in and out as fast as possible. I won't complain about their mediocre cleaning - you get what you pay for - but they are also unethical. They lost 2 shirts I had made. They were expensive, so I've been trying to get reimbursed. Over 2 months, I've spoken to various employees and managers multiple times. They always say, "I'll call you once I [submit your claim/get approval/talk to X person/etc.]" But it's clear they're just lying, because no one has EVER called me back. It's just a run around, and I'm sure if I don't file a case in small claims court or something they will never actually pay me a dime. I've brought a lot of clothes from thrift stores here to get cleaned. I go out of my way to bring them here because of the price, but there is almost always an issue with something in each of my orders. For instance: - a couple months ago I brought a jacket in that had a label on it saying it was able to be dry-cleaned. The staff told me it would be charged suede prices (it was not suede). I pointed out the label and she said it would be fine. When I went to pick it up, the staffer again said it was suede and they wouldn't clean it unless I paid them more money. Apparently the first person never made a note or indicated it was fine. Then when someone thought it was not OK to clean, no one tried to call me about the issue nor to see if I wanted to clean it anyway at the extra price so it would be done when I went to pick it up. I'm glad I didn't need it the same day I got it back. - stains on a dress were still there when I brought it home, and in an obvious place on the front. At other places, if they can't get something out, they will make a note and the staff will tell you when you pick it up. Instead, I discovered it when I tried to wear it one day. - I got all the way home (a 45 minute+ undertaking on transit) and found two of the buttons on a shirt were broken. It was vintage, and the buttons were unique, so it basically ruined the appeal of a really cool shirt. 90% of the time, they are fine, but that last 10% will get you. I went there for the pricing, then discovered the drop off bag tied to my debit card, email notifications, fast, friendly service, and dry cleaning as good as the "Classics" who charge WAY more. When I found out about Zip and their amazing prices, I was so excited to switch to them and spend $100s less on dry cleaning a month. Unfortunately, it was too good to be true. After a couple trips, I found that my shirts smelled the same and a couple of stains weren't removed. My boyfriends pants were also not creased properly. We have since switched Dupont Court Cleaners in Dupont even though its way more expensive. read more

Started using Zip - in November and was very pleased. Tailor good and counter service was pleasant, quick turn around time, and convenient. The last two visits - terrible customer service. Same person - no eye contact, no thank you, and attitude that says "I don't want to be here." I asked about separating my lighter blouses and there was no response - he just dumped those blouses in the bag with the other darker items. No comment, no explanation. I will admit that I was so flustered that I almost left without my cleaning and he unpleasantly reminded me that I had cleaning. Zips needs to find a place for this fellow where he doesn't have to interact with customers. I will try my best to avoid him in the future (he was one of only two people working at the counter this afternoon) and if I can't I will go to the cleaners down the street. Can't beat the prices but I agree that you shouldn't take anything of significant value there - the stains don't come out and I think their process is hard on your clothing. I took a quilt to be laundered and the fabric has been tearing like crazy ever since (I have the same quilts in smaller size that I launder and there is zero tearing problem). I took my daughter's crocheted blanket and the guy asked me in a rather accusatory way if it was a table cloth. I said no, but then he shook his head and wouldn't accept it. Customer service, as other reviewers have noted, is pretty unfriendly. My mother, an expert seamstress who unfortunately lives out of town, said the work done by the tailor there was very poor and she showed me a tear he'd made by mistake that he'd hidden on a pair of pants I'd sent in. I've taken garments to Zips before. I don't usually take anything intricate or stained in need of care because you get what you pay for. Also they do not take curtains, table cloths or any household linens. And, like everything else, they're real big jerks about it. A business that enforces bad policies, and does not value customer service, will not get my business ever again. I used to think that Zips was the rare example of getting much more than you pay for. But they ruined the belt to my favorite dress. They gave it back to me shredded, and just shrugged. Apparently the policy posted in the store and on the receipt in small lettering says they're not responsible for damage done to belts. This policy sucks, but their implementation of it is even worse. I suggested to change the policy to not accept items they wont be responsible for. Response: shrug. I suggested that that the employees should alert customers to the policy before they accept belts. Shrug. I suggested they should at least apologize for ruining my favorite dress. Shrug. He was annoyed that I was upset, that he even had to talk to me. Why is this person a manager? read more

Horrible! I had a comforter dry cleaned, and it came back with multiple spots that weren't there when I took it in. The "texture" of the comforter is ruined as well. Now I have to buy a new comforter. Will NEVER go back. read more

The quality of the treatment of garments is hit or miss. But after having misplaced my garment AND made me feel that I was of course the one at fault, I am DONE with this establishment. Not only did they misplace the item, the manager on duty made it clear that I was the one likely at fault. He said he would do a search BUT wouldn't commit to following up with me on the search if he followed up at all. When they eventually found the garment, there were no apologies over the phone or in person when I picked up the garment. Poor quality and poor service, that's it for me. read more

Price: Great!! Note: They accept CASH ONLY! (But do have an ATM on premise should you not have any.) Service: Piss Poor. Take Away: We will be going back in the future (as placed around us are much much more expensive) but will never expect more than rude automatons helping us. (So nothing that needs special handling - suits and work shirts are probably fine though.) We dropped off clothing at 9:15am on Saturday (yes after their 9-5 same day cleaning) and were told to call Monday morning as it might be done by then and we might not have to wait till 5pm Monday to pick it up. (Which would not have been a big deal). I called Monday morning and after listening to an automated message about "a busy business is a sign of a good business but they aren't too busy for your concerns please be patient and we will see to your needs" a man picked up the phone to let me know they were busy and it would take a couple of minutes as all the customer services reps were busy. No biggy, right? 15minutes later he pick up the phone again, does not remember he's put me on hold and tells me I was stupid for calling as they don't have time to look up (in their computer) if an order is done. Then he told me to call back an hour later. When I complained that it was rather unacceptable to tell someone we will be with you in a second and then 15min later tell them to call back as they are too busy for you. (I mean tell me the first time around, and don't make me listen to a stupid jingle for 15min). His response was that I clearly didn't understand customer service and he didn't know what I wanted from him as he couldn't kick someone off line to check. ZIPS: Here's my question for you: When someone is asking for a pick up and your customer service rep is looking for his garments, in those 3 min couldn't the rude guy at the phone have looked up if my stuff was ready? I am on hold (again) with Zips now (someone answered, now I have been waiting for 12 minutes and counting this time . . . ), trying to get through to a manager. An email I sent was not replied to. This is beyond frustrating. When I picked up clothes from the Zips, I noticed that there was a blue laundered shirt that did not belong to me. I also noticed that my white shirt was gone. I brought it to the cashier's attention. He told me that I would have to wait OVER A MONTH to see if they could "find" it and they would call me. When I expressed that this did not seem acceptable, he said he'd be willing to take off the cost (under $2) of getting that shirt laundered. Well, of course I didn't think I'd have to pay for you to clean a shirt that you have lost! I am now well over the "over a month" wait time, and cannot get any response from them to replace the cost of my shirt. This is unacceptable. Went to Zips around the holidays to get a handful of garments dry cleaned. It was about 2 weeks later when I decided to actually wear any of them and I chose to wear a white knit cardigan. After about an hour of wearing it I realized, a) it was still dirty (had marks all along the hem and back of it) and b) found what appeared to be rust stains on the underside of the right arm. This wasn't the first time dry cleaning this garment and I've never washed it myself. It wasn't there before I dropped it off either. Needless to say I'm pissed. Won't be taking anything back there again. Moral of the lesson, check your garments before you leave cause I'm sure they wouldn't do shit about it now and you get what you pay for. I'll definitely spend the money at a quality dry cleaners than this assembly line of a shop. read more

I would go out of my way to go here. They've done a good job with all my dry cleaning (though I've never had a tough stain or anything). I was really afraid to have them alter my clothes but feeling cheap I gave them a try and am very pleased! I've had skirts, pants and dresses hemmed here and as well as straps on a dress shorted (I'm short, ok). Each time I was pleased with the outcome. You get what you pay for. Great for mid and low range garments. I wouldn't take my Gucci clothing there for cleaning. Sometimes my shirts have clumps of dried up soap on them but other than that they look and smell clean and the pressing is excellent. You can't beat the price. The alterations are a bit on the expensive side. Replacing 2 buttons of my suit jacket was $21.00 and took 7 days. All in all, I will keep going back, just remember... You get what you pay for... Really average place. It's cheap, which is its best feature. Don't get your zippers redone here. They completely butchered my pants. The dry cleaning is ok. It's mostly just pressing. If you want something truly dry cleaned because it's dirty, I wouldn't go there. You simply can't complain for 2.29 an item (used to be 1.99) Now that I've moved away from that part of town, I do wish there is a zips close to me. read more

When I lived in Van Ness, this place was clutch. It's cheap, quick, and relatively reliable, though certainly not amazing. The key: cheap. At $2/item (cash only, of course), drycleaning your suit will only put you back $4. That's unbelievable, given that most other places will charge you 4x that (and most will do no better a job). That said, I wouldn't take anything really expensive here. Nor do they really save you anything on standard shirts. read more

It's amazingly cheap with great hours and they turn it around the same day. Regarding damage, I've experienced the same issues with dry cleaners costing three times as much. I also love that I can park in the back lot by the car wash which is very convenient in the city. read more

I do all of my dry cleaning here and they're always on time. There were a few times when my clothing had some nasty spots that had to be re-done, but all in all the staff was very courteous and the quality of their work is very good especially for the price. read more

Been using Zips for almost two years now and have been pretty happy with my experience. You have to take it for what it is--cheap dry cleaning--and not bring your really nice items there but for work clothes and more casual items it's great. The turn around time and price cannot be beat. read more

I've been taking clothes to this Zips location for about 2 years now, and I have never had anything but a smooth experience--especially compared to other dry cleaners. Zips' prices--significantly lower than other dry cleaners. Zips' technology--more modern than other dry cleaners (they send you an email when your clothes are ready to be picked up and give you a key tag with a barcode so they can quickly find you in their system). Zips' quality of cleanliness--the same as other dry cleaners, as far as I can tell (I've never had anything bad happen to my clothes; they've always been cleaned and pressed just fine). Maybe other reviewers had one-off bad experiences--I've gone to this place like 30-40 times and never had a single issue. read more

I tried out Zips for alterations based on a friend's recommendation. I don't live near Zips, so I had to take public transportation and walk several blocks to bring 5 items to be taken in. The prices looked reasonable on their price board, but it wasn't until after I had been there for 45 minutes getting each item sized and pinned that I understood that each thing they did to the garment was a separate line item (hemming a dress was one price, hemming the liner of the dress was another, taking in the waist of a pair of pants was one price, taking in the rear of a pair of pants was another). After committing so much time, I decided I would just go for it, even though the total I was quoted was much more than I'd anticipated upon preliminary review of the price board. I was required to pay in advance, over $200 for two dresses and three pairs of pants, and the cashier informed me that the alterations would be ready in one week. I showed up a week later and not only were my alterations not finished, but the cashier told me then that I had been undercharged for my alterations. When I finally got the items back, a week later than I was originally promised, the alterations were terrible. Both dresses still hung like sacks, and the pants were still too big in the waist and rear. To be fair, the hems were fine. At this point, having had to travel to and from Zips without a car on three occasions, and having had to pay more than I was originally quoted, I cut my losses and took my clothes elsewhere for further alterations. I can't speak to their dry cleaning, which is certainly a great price, but I would not recommend Zips for alterations, unless all you are having done are hems. read more

I was reminded today that you should NEVER use Zips for your quality or fragile clothing. It had been a while since I patronized the spot and came back with something ruined (took a rain coat there once and when I got back the hem had completely unravelled). I had a stack of dry cleaning that would've cost hundreds of dollars so I decided, "What the heck?" They came back looking fine and I wore 1 or 2 of the garments with no problem. Then today I put on a pair of pants. Look great on the outside but inside the lining is completely wrinkled. I feel like I have popcorn inside my pants. I was combing my hair in the mirror and happened to lift my arms and was shocked to find that the silk shirt I just got back from Zips had holes under EACH of the armpits. This was one of my favorite, quality blouses and I now have to throw it out. Bottom line-- this place is for your casual, sturdy duds only. Nothing you treasure. read more

Terrible uninformed staff! I asked them if a shirt could be dry cleaned, they said yes. I even asked what if the tag says hand wash, they said its no problem. I came back to find a RUINED shirt. The metal parts on the shirt were completely unglued and the shirt has to be disposed now. I'm highly disappointed. I've been going here for almost a year and now I understand what they been by when you have a bad experience only ONCE you never go back. They offered me nothing for my shirt, only the 1.99 for dry cleaning free. I'd rather pay by extra 5 bucks to not have to lose my one of a kind shirt. This time I had them fixed (again) , and picked em in to be stitched, paid, picked them up (and I forget to check until I was home) but the rip hadn't been fixed. The surly, rude employees in this shop have always been miserable. Most of them act out how much they hate customer service, and the managers seem to enjoy keeping lines of people waiting while only one or two desks are staffed and many employees are laughing and chatting away. Customers BEWARE. I have been a customer with this cleaners for over two years but no longer after today. Last week I went on a business trip. Once there I pulled out a sweater I had cleaned at this establishment only to find the sweater was completely ruined with a bleach like stain. Upon returning home I stopped by today to speak with the manager and to show him the damage. Basically he did not want to take any responsibility for the damage. Worst yet implying somehow the discoloration occurred due to something I did prior to bringing the garment into them to be cleaned. Really! What am I five years old. I have had this sweater cleaned by them on at least two other occasions in the past and there was no issue. The sweater was from KASPER and of good quality. DO NOT GET ALTERATIONS done at Zips! There are major communication challenges with the alterations man. I should have left with the dress when he clearly was not listening or understanding what I was asking for. I picked up my dress and it soo short in the front that it looks like I am wading in water-horrendous. He has no idea what he is doing, clearly. Zips is super cheap but they have never gotten a stain out of anything I have brought there... Do yourself a favor and spend a little more money and go elsewhere where they know what they are doing. Zips is amazing. When my boyfriend lived in Van Ness, Zips was seriously the best thing about the neighborhood. They are incredibly fast, professional, and ridiculously inexpensive. I just wish that there were more locations that were convenient to where I live now -- I am instead paying three times the price for half the service. Zips - you get what you pay for. I usually use my neighborhood dry cleaner (Dupont area) but went to Zips for the price. I was taking a number of relatively inexpensive clothing items and made the mistake of throwing my white Theory pants into the mix. They came back covered in pink stains. When I returned them to be re-cleaned, they came back with additional pink stains and a new blue one to boot. Gave them another chance, and the blue stain disappeared from the top of the pants to reappear at the bottom; the pink stains appear to be permanent. Talked to two managers on the phone all of whom were reasonably polite, but could never connect me to the owner, who never appears to be there. After being brushed off multiple times and attempting to pick up the pants on no less than four occasions, I finally located the owner. He informed me there is nothing they can do to remedy the situation as it has been more than 30 days since the pants were initially dropped off. Also informed me that the stains (the ones that appeared, disappeared, and moved with each cleaning session) could not possibly have come from their system, leading to the only logical conclusion - I must have brought the pants in with stains on them and then somehow gotten additional stains on them while looking at them at the Zips counter as I attempted to pick them up. Ruining clothes is terrible, lying about it is worse. read more

I am a huge fan of Zips. I am there several times a week and have been really pleased with their work and how quickly they turn around the cleaning. They go out of their way to be convenient: In by 9 out by 5, ATM in the lobby, parking behind the cleaners, friendly staff, etc. When you combine those features with the extremely low prices you really can't get a better deal in the Van Ness area. read more
