Big Box Store meets one of Life's Regular Needs! I have been using the local neighborhood dry cleaner for ever, but recently the Zips commercials got to me, so I decided to try it, since my regular cleaner has new staff and new pricing. And Zips touts their low price and quick service. What is different is: If the place is busy, you stand in a que to get to one of the many clerks. You are assigned a key tag (also use your phone number and an ID), where in my neighborhood store they recognize me. You pay for your service when clothes are dropped off, as opposed to when you pick up. Clothes can be ready the next day, and normally are, and you get an email when they are ready. Pick up, you stand in line, they go and search the racks and you get your items. Parking is tight behind the CT Ave location, and the place is pretty big so it is a long walk, and down stairs, so if you are handicapped it is a bit tough. I have not worn the clothes that they cleaned and I will need to go back a few more times to see if I like what they do, so far it worked well. read more

ZIPS is a discount cleaner and it's like an assembly line. I've had several items damaged. Men should check the collar button and sleeve bottoms on dress shirts. They often come back damaged, broken or missing. When they do replace the button, it is often an odd size or mismatched. Do not take any good quality wool or blend dry cleaning items to this location! They should be used for laundry items and bulky bedding only. Send your good clothes to a quality cleaner. They also will not return any items left on the item (label pins or uniform pins) or in pockets. They also tend to lose items. They have lost at least three of my shirts. Getting compensated for a loss is a difficult process. They won't even begin to consider compensation until 30 days after the loss is bright to their attention. You can see how often they lose items just spend about a half hour in line -- you usually witness one or two people who had issues with their orders in that time frame. I will only use this business when absolutely necessary. read more

I went there a few times. Dry cleaning was fine - you have to give them your phone number when dropping off clothes. I'm writing this review because I just got a mass text from them that is an ad. "ZIPS Cleaners of Washington is an essential business. Keeping your clothes clean & disinfected. $14 comforters till 7/15/20. Show text at store." Before I discovered Zips Dry Cleaners, I had the dry cleaning blues. Been all over the 'hood trying this place & that. Some better than others, but none all that. Some lose your clothes, some stain your clothes, some are pricey & claim to be green. Or make you wonder if the girl behind the counter who's just your size & repeatedly comments on how nice your stuff is, wears it a la Seinfeld (when Jerry's mom's coat ends up on his dry cleaners wife's back). But I digress, the point is that- Now I go to Zips. All the way up Conn Ave, one Metro stop, w/my dirty clothes on my back. They're professional and friendly, cheap & so far haven't lost a thing. I understand how some people can complain... sometimes I don't feel like they do the BEST job but I've found that if I point out every stain I see and make the cashier take notes, things run smoothly. $1.99 for everything... I don't own an iron and I blame Zips. Make sure you bring cash and be prepared to wait in line on Saturdays... it's a mess. read more

Update: over a month after my fiance's shirt was lost by ZIPS, they have yet to find and return it to him. Someone reached out to us based off this Yelp review (on Yelp itself) and communicated with us for two days saying they tried to get the owner on the line, and then dropped the ball on this and stopped communicating with us further. I reached out to that person multiple times--no response. I guess it must be really hard on ZIPS management to keep calling the owner of this franchise to locate something their incompetence has lost. I've called the ZIPS store directly asking for updates on the shirt--no response. Bottom line: AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This place WILL lose your clothes or damage them. read more

First time using Zips, now I know why they are cheap. I took 3 blouses to be pressed only and they pressed the wrinkles in. They looked better when they came out of the dryer and that doesn't say much. I picked up my cleaning and walked across the street to where I live, the blouses were not laid down or smooshed in my close. The picture is what the blouse looked like right after I got home and took the bag off. Unfortunately I dropped off 6 blouses when I picked up these 3. I hope they do more than press the wrinkles in. And as others have said the staff person who helped me acted like I was bothering her. read more

I have been going to Zips on King's Highway for years and I never had any issues. So when I moved to DC, I decided to continue my business with Zips. Boy, did I make a mistake. First they lost my brand new bottom up shirts. They found it almost a month later so at least they found it so that is where the two stars comes from. I really want to give 1 star but I will be fair. I get my shirts back only to realize that there are now buttons missing. This is unacceptable and ridiculous. You mean to tell me that after almost a month of waiting, they couldn't even fix the button due to this inconvenience. I am really disappointed in this Zips because I wanted to like it because of the convenience of home and work. It is not worth the headache. read more

The crew at Zips are fast moving, obviously hard working, and polite to the last. I am transgender, wearing nothing other than woman's clothes and makeup. Even that, which has set more than a few people back on their heels, doesn't even get a stare, a snicker, or a laugh- they treat me as if I were wearing a business suite. This is a very important point- they are as polite as can be. The prices cannot be beaten, and the turn-around time is quick. When I first started going there, it was great. Sure, they'd sometimes flatten a hook in a hook and eye, but otherwise they were reliable. I don't know whether they're under new management or something, but now they're just terrible. Half the time, my clothes come back smelling heavily of the dry cleaning chemicals -- indicating that they're not conducting the process correctly. There's no way you can go to work smelling like that. It's such a disappointment. I think I'll be trying new cleaners in the area. It's true that this place is cheap, but that doesn't matter if I have to stand in line twice to clean the same clothes. read more

I've been going to this drycleaners for both drycleaning and mostly for alterations on ill fitting clothing. I found their prices so reasonable and their alterations were great at first but during my last few visits I've gotten back pieces of clothing that I was charged for that never actually got altered and then when I went back to have them altered only a few pieces were returned to me. I will plan to have all my alterations done elsewhere for future needs. read more

At this new location the guys were all standing around laughing and joking and acted like I was a nuisance for disturbing them The guy with dreadlocks finally came over to assist me but was not professional or polite...I know this is zipps but if you don't want to deal with the public get a different job! read more

Poor customer service. I brought a pair of pants to be dry cleaned. After I tried to pay by card I was told it had to be cash, which I didn't have. Rather than be empathetic or work to find a solution, the lady behind the counter wordlessly pulled my pants back out of the drawer, tossed them in the counter, and said, "You gotta have cash." Nothing more. So I took back my pants and walked out. What is frustrating is that she could have told me they have an ATM on site, but didn't. (I learned they have ATMs after the fact.) I would have happily used it to get cash had I known (I'm new to Zips). A really unpleasant experience. All she had to do was be nice about it and I would have understood. Do not take anything that is expensive to this cleaners the will destroy it. I took my red Ann Taylor blazer to dry clean on my first pick up the blazer was dirtier that when I drop it off, the second pick the totally wash out the color of my blazer. The manager did nothing and said that I brought it in like that. This was my first time having my blazer clean. I did not have a receipt for my blazer but I will be getting in touch with Ann Taylor for some kind of evidence so I can file a claim against then and file a complain with the BBB. read more

My wife and I began using ZIPS Van Ness after our longtime dry cleaner closed. The rates were great and given the long lines one often encounters our assumption was they must be pretty good. However, they began losing clothing. Two substantial pieces of my wife's. I filled out their silly form and they said I'd be called. I inquired on two subsequent visits and was told I'd be called. We began using another clearer in the area and have been very happy so far. When we did a drop off and pick up there we went over to inquire AGAIN about the missing garments. We spoke to a manager and he brought out two item. But they were not the two we were looking for. I asked calmly if the manager could check again. He was not pleased, but did. He came back with 4 bags containing 10 items (fortunately) the two my wife was concerned about were in there. We will never use this place again. read more

My love affair with ZIPS DRY CLEANERS is officially OVER!!! Over the last year, I've been a loyal biweekly customer. I was especially impressed with their quick turn around on dry cleaning.....and their decent prices. Over the course of the last two months, I've had a total of 5 dress shirts that were RIPPED (in the elbows) after being dry cleaned........complements of ZIPS DRY CLEANERS! In addition to the cost of each shirt, I had also spent additional funds for alterations on several of these shirts. The last time I picked up dry cleaning, I examined each shirt before departing the ZIPS premises. Voila.....ANOTHER ripped shirt. I left that particular shirt, along with a ripped shirt from a previous batch, for the Manager to examine upon their return. This past week, I get a call from the Manager. This individual had the audacity to PROJECT THE BLAME for the ripped shirts onto me. He stated, "the blue shirt looks rather worn in the elbow, and the yellow shirt......well, I can't really tell." Both of these shirts, I wear maybe once a month, and were not that old The blue shirt (as a whole), was a thinner material.....but NOT worn. THE YELLOW SHIRT WAS A BRAND NEW SHIRT (eat your words Mr. Manager). He also boasted that ZIPS cleans over 1,000 shirts per day, and has never had complaints about ripped shirts. I question the validity of that claim, based on my experience over numerous visits. If you have ever had a bad experience with ZIPS, I encourage you to RESPOND to this REVIEW! In the end, the Manager offered me a STORE CREDIT (the cost of cleaning the RIPPED SHIRTS toward future dry cleaning cost). NO THANK YOU.....I'm officially FINISHED with ZIPS DRY CLEANERS! Last week there was bleeding on a new shirt. I let it go. This week they lost my order. Disappeared. I turned it in Thursday evening, and by Saturday morning the order was lost on a rack somewhere. All alone... and surely scared. Zips refused to set aside someone to locate it while I waited. Instead, I am asked to wait 2 more days and come back Monday evening, with no guarantee my clothes will be there. I was told that is all they can do. And no, they did not offer a refund or a voucher or apologize for the waste of gas and time... They only offered a shrug. So don't use them if you need something the next day, or the day after, or even the day after that, or the day after that. But if you do, be sure to say a Hail Mary for the safe return of your clothes or, if you are more proactive, borrow a friend's blood hound just in case they need help tracking your clothes! UPDATE (9/1/2016): Two phone calls and one week later, my order still cannot be found. I have been told I have a month before they will consider reimbursing me. I don't want to be reimbursed. I want my clothes. I am told they are looking for them, but I don't believe it. Zips could care less. It deals in volume, and it is a numbers game. Customer satisfaction and being able to reliably track orders are not top concerns. Please give me a shoutout if you have a bloodhound that I can borrow! read more

I have been going there for years, every week. Never had a problem with the quality of the service. Cleaning is on time, often earlier then when promised i.e. well,before 5:00 pm of same day. They send me an e-mail when my clothes are ready. Parking lot is a pain but otherwise great prices and the staff is just fine. The have a points thing so periodically I even get discounts. read more

Like many have already said, DO NOT bring your clothes here... at least definitely not the ones you care about. I'd often wonder why I'd make the trip all the way up Connecticut Avenue to go to this place and then regret it... and this time, I've decided to stop going altogether. Too many ruined garments and too many errors. My white pants (which I dropped off because of a strong cigarette smell, no stains) came back with half of it stained in pink, and my dress was also stained/dyed two different colors and was missing beads. Not to mention that both came back with "sorry we couldn't remove your stains" tags-- an appalling misrepresentation of the fact that THEY stained both garments and ruined them. I'd only worn my dress once, too. Prior to that, I've had clothes come back with small stains that weren't there before. There was also the time when I submitted a pair of pants to have them hemmed (after the Korean ladies put safety pins through the pants hem and I told the cashier so), and they came back dry cleaned and not hemmed. Cotton pants. Really- who the heck would ask to have cheap mass-produced machine-washable cotton pants dry cleaned?? Then there was the time when the items weren't ready even though I came a day after the timeline given. The service is awful, and the money I've lost from ruined clothes is more than whatever I might have saved over the past few years. Stay away from this place. $2 or not, I'm mad I wasted my money here! Yes, they were efficient and yes they were timely, but my clothes have a musty smell. Now, I have to take them to another dry cleaner to make sure they are clean. I got these done specifically for an interview and refuse to go smelling like must. If you need cheap dry cleaning on regular stuff, just get Dryel and throw your clothes in the dryer because I question if they actually dry cleaned my clothes. We've been lugging piles of dry cleaning to Zips for a couple of years now. For a $1.99, you don't expect the best service or results, but the counter staff has always been friendly and efficient. Occasionally, we would get items that seemed a bit smaller than when we turned them in, stains that were not removed, or clothes that didn't smell like they had been cleaned. And we dealt with it for what it was. On our last visit, we were told that Zips could not find an item that we had left for alterations. We took a look at the clothes they cleaned while they searched for it and brought a couple of items that looked like they needed re-cleaned to their attention. A manager told us that "we would just have to agree to disagree on that" and that a silk blouse that appeared to have 2 chemical stains on it were "most likely where we had dropped food on ourselves." The fact that a manager would ever speak to a customer that way was appalling, let alone a customer who was waiting for the staff to find a lost item. The accusatorial tone continued and the item was not found during our visit. We alerted ZIPS corporate office and they promised to follow up. Follow up they did, while the item has been found, the manager who spoke rudely to us is apparently the owner of the store. From the reviews here, it looks like this location and ZIPS in general is headed downhill. Maybe it has to due with franchise expansion or perhaps there is something else to blame, but we'll happily spend more money at another dry cleaner from this point forward. In short: though the service is inexpensive you run the risk of getting your garments damaged or lost. The management is horrible. My experience: This is my very first post on Yelp and it is a shame that I need to use it on the ZIPS Dry Cleaners at 4418 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008. Even though I wasn't very satisfied with the quality for the service I remained a loyal customer of ZIPS Drycleaners for several years. I've had several issues with them over the years, I would just sensitive clothing in the care of a more trusted dry cleaners rather than taking the chance of sending to ZIPS. That all changed in September 2014 when ZIPS went beyond the minor issues and returned my garment with blue dye stains all over light gray pants. When I returned to the store, the manager was not helpful. In fact, he had a tone that implied that his establishment was not responsible for the issue. I bet after reviewing store footage her realized his error or perhaps he looked up the account and realized that it was unlikely. First he told me that the matter was in review. Then he would try to get the dye out of the pants. Then he said he would be in touch but didn't get in touch with me until I contacted the ZIPS corporate office. It's been 6 months since I've been trying get my pants back from ZIPS. The store manager finally told me that this "fell through the cracks" in January but it's March and he still seems to be failing at contacting me or replacing the pants. I would not recommend this dry cleaners to anyone. It is worth the extra month to go to an establishment with enough integrity to at least be responsive and own up to their mistakes. I promised myself that I wouldn't be the person that only posts negative critiques on Yelp so in return I plan on writing a good post about an amazing establishment. I would give them negative stars if I could. First of all, they don't take credit cards...it is 2014. The locations in Maryland which are just a few miles away take credit cards. The people are extremely rude. They would rather talk to each other and flirt openly with each other as opposed to talk to customers. I understand this place is cheaper than other dry cleaners, but your clothes don't get cleaned. My last set of clothing had stains that weren't there when I dropped them off! The last and final straw is my couch covers. I have plain white couch covers...similar to a thicker sheet. I got two of them cleaned a Zips months ago. How do I know this? I left the tag on there to remember. I bring it in and the guy says we can't clean this. I am puzzled since they clean comforters AND they cleaned it the last time! He calls over a young lady that says we just don't do this and offers no explanation. So...if I had claimed it was a comforter, would it be ok? They just walked away with no explanation. Stupid! I brought a new pair of never been worn jeans, to Zips in Van Ness to be hemmed. Not too difficult you'd think? I specifically asked the seamstress and the people who generated the ticket NOT to press/iron the jeans when they'd finished hemming the jeans, and what did they do? you guessed it. They pressed them and now I have distinct creases on the side of my jeans which are turning white with every wash! I asked to speak to the seamstress and she shrugged her shoulders and said, "it's nothing to do with me speak to the manager". Which I did. The manager by all appearances seemed to be an adult, but it was like speaking to a surly teenager, Monosyllable responses from the manager would be putting it mildly. In essence, eventually, he explained that once anything is altered by the seamstress it then goes back 'there' where they have no control of the item back 'there', It gets pressed because it's in the system and there's nothing they can do once it has gone back 'there'. My question was why didn't someone tell someone that I specifically asked that the jeans NOT be pressed. He said that that's not possible once it goes back 'there'. My next question was "why can't a Zip employee interact with another human Zip employee ​and tell them specifically what was agreed upon at the onset?" The manager's response was a shoulder shrug. Maybe, to make it simple, all complicated requests should be written on the ticket in a big red crayon? Bottom line: My new jeans look silly. My recommendation is only to use Zips for very basic dry cleaning and nothing else. My message to Zips is: Some of your employees are very nice to deal with, some are not. The message that should be reinforced weekly is: The customer is not the enemy! read more

Extremely hit or miss, I guess. This place was recommended by a friend who got twenty suits dry cleaned here for almost negative money and told me they were terrific. My girlfriend's not a liar and I reeeaaallly wanted to believe. But I took in 15 items and got one of my skirts back very freshly starched and pressed, yet sporting the EXACT stain I had taken it in with. I mean the spot hadn't so much as faded! (And it was a really dark spot - yet came out easily when I nervously washed the delicate garment by hand). The clothes (that were actually clean) didn't smell great either. Guess I've been spoiled by expensive, "green" dry cleaners. At least I can count on them coming back clean. Sorry, Zips. Not a fan. read more

Quickest, cheapest, most consistent Cleaners around. I wouldn't go anywhere else! Email notifications when your items are ready? So clutch. Saves you a trip there in case your order isn't done, and serves as a handy reminder to pick up your clothes. They also do basic tailoring and stain removal for very cheap! So worth it! read more

Horrible - after two years! I have been coming here for a little over two years. My last round they lost a belt to a dress and it is silk so I can't ever replace it. And - they washed a $110 shirt that I specifically said had to be dry cleaned so that it wouldn't bleed. Guess what - it bled! It is ruined! So when I asked what they would do to compensate me they said 'sorry.' So sorry but you all are horrible and I will not be back. read more

Cheapest in the area and you get what you pay for! Girlfriend's clothes came back smelling strongly of moth balls, they couldn't remove the stain on one item (which was readily removed a few days later by our regular cleaner in Cleveland Park) and one item had an extra stain on it after getting it back. One other thing, don't expect a significant other to pick up your stuff, they've been known to ID for pickups. We called about this policy and got mixed directions from different employees. I have been going to Zips for years and liked the fact that they are inexpensive, even though the parking lot is *terrible* (I got dinged in that lot). I went there in December and some time later, when I opened my package of shirts, I realize that they had given me somebody else's shirt (thanks, I was on a trip and needed the shirt.) I returned it to Zips and made out a form for a lost item. After a couple weeks I returned and they showed me a couple more shirts, asking if any of them were mine. None of them were. He said they needed to look some more and after a few more weeks I returned. They still couldn't find my shirt, but wanted more time. "You have to give us some time." Today I returned and they said that they had no copy of the form I made out and "couldn't" reimburse me (as promised). The manager said that he would phone me tonight. He didn't. It has been five months! No shirt and no reimbursement. I had overlooked poor service in the past: they had burned the pants on *two* of my summer suits. They ironed a jacket on another suit so that the lapels stuck out. They had ripped a shirt. Now they have lost a shirt altogether, gave me a run around, lost my paperwork, so they "are unable" to compensate me. I had thought the poor service and damaged clothing was a quid pro quo for the low cost. I no longer believe that. I did the math: two ruined suits, one damaged shirt and a lost shirt, a ding in the parking lot. Did I mention that the tailor is substandard? I had work done - patching up some small holes in a garment - only to see that half of them weren't done. So yet *another* trip back (I live in Bethesda) and having to deal with that horrible parking lot! I have to ask myself if it has been worth the trip when I have I have cleaners in my own neighborhood. I do wish these people would pay attention to their work. ---/ I am updating this review and increasing my rating by one star to two stars. They reached out to me and gave me a store credit and also a check - but even on this, they fell short. It took several months, a few visits, numerous phone calls (including being left on hold for long periods) and when I left messages, the calls were not returned. They lost my shirt in December 2014 and now, in August 2015, I finally got a check. That isn't great, but they did try to make it right. I have used them a few times. They are close and cheap and do a relatively decent job. HOWEVER, this last time, they LOST my clothes. Over $600 worth. AND, they will not do anything about it! Further, I spoke with the so called store manager (not sure he really is given his attitude and lack of maturity), and he basically made me feel like it was my fault they lost my clothes. What?! This is a no-frills, no-nonsense dry cleaner. I probably wouldn't trust them with anything worth a lot of money, but since I have nothing like that in my budget-conscious closet, I'm happy to trust them with my sweaters and work dresses for an unbeatable price. Be aware they lost clothes--I know low price is an important factor, and as long as you get a decent cleaning/laundry service that should be a good deal. With that price I didn't expect an extraordinary cleaning or customer service. But last time I went to pick up my clothes, I noticed that one of the shirts in the bag didn't belong to me. They said this is the shirt that I turned in - as if I cannot recognize my own clothes. - All in all, they lost one of my shirts, and they didn't pay too much attention nor help me about this situation. They gave a receipt for the lost shirt. They said they may or may not find the shirt. If they cannot find it, after 30 days I can fill a claim!! Well, it's good as long as they don't lose stuff but it's a risky game. Personally I'd rather to pay a bit more rather than finding somebody else's belongings with my clothes and most importantly loosing my own. So I actually had a really good experience with Zips. The only things I don't like are the ridiculous lines and the only cash BS...argh. But besides that, I was quite pleased!! The guy who was helping me was a bit grumpy at first, but he ended up making jokes..I was there for a while haha. I think because I was nice to them, I'm not sure but my stuff was ready wayyy ahead of time, and was done perfectly. I am definitely going back. DONT GO on saturday, as previously stated, and be prepared to pay with cash, but you shouldn't need more than like $20. Oh, I also got alterations done there and they were done very nicely as well. Much better than I expected, so I'll definitely be going back for that. The stitching looked like it was sold to me that way, you couldnt tell I had fgotten alterations done at all. read more

I have never been to a "discount" dry cleaning place that does such a good job. I won't complain about their mediocre cleaning - you get what you pay for - but they are also unethical. They lost 2 shirts I had made. They were expensive, so I've been trying to get reimbursed. Over 2 months, I've spoken to various employees and managers multiple times. They always say, "I'll call you once I [submit your claim/get approval/talk to X person/etc.]" But it's clear they're just lying, because no one has EVER called me back. It's just a run around, and I'm sure if I don't file a case in small claims court or something they will never actually pay me a dime.
