When I brought this up they didn't act surprised and knew they had done it. "we haven't updated our menu prices" - no smiles. but somehow they had time to update their charging system? This is one of the very few places in town where you can order sushi delivery till 2am and as bad as you might think late night maki may be it's actually not bad. I ordered conveniently through Yelp by way of Eat 24 which was an extremely smooth process. No language barrier on the phone, timely drop off, and didn't even have to walk down my stairs to meet the delivery dude. The rolls were surprisingly fresh, the pad thai was tasty, and their chili sauce added an excellent kick to make my food spicy which is just how I like it. It wouldn't exactly be my first choice for Asian food during normal hours, but if I get a craving after hours again I'd definitely order from Zoku. read more

This is an update to my previous review. It is, with a heavy heart, very discouraging that I have to update my review. Zoku recently opened a second location, further from my house which I have not tried yet, and it seems that the A team has left the location near my house. I suspect the A team has gone to open the new restaurant, leaving the B team in charge at the location at Kedzie and North. BRING KATHY BACK! As a die hard Zoku fan, I was surprised when a received an order that was not only sub-par with falling apart sushi, but the instructions regarding my order had not been followed. I said to myself, well everyone has bad days - no worries - and didn't think twice about it. Then another order, equally disappointing. Ok, people have rough weeks too....I'll give it another go again. Third time, fourth time - all equally disappointing and at this point I've sunk too much money into second, third and fourth chances. I'm so sorry Zoku, but this isn't working for me - our one way relationship - we're going to have to start seeing other people. Not only does Zoku rival Chicago sushi spots like Rise and Mirai,( at half the price) but this corner pocket hide away reminds me, from the colorful manga animea Japanese Gods and Monsters painted on its walls, to the ultra hip Asian Art Institute student waitresses, of the first Sushi joints that popped up in Brooklyn in the early 90's that served the most explosively fresh cut of sushi and sea crustaceans, that could only be haggled over only at 3:00am from the old Fulton Fish Market. Zoku harks back to the "pre foodie", era, back in the day when the best food was found in those out of the way neighborhood cracks and crevices, as opposed to the shiny places where the Midwestern foodie zombies swarm to be seen and be seen. This is the 2nd time I went there and I used a $40 groupon. I totally scored. Me and my bro got the caramel crunch roll (the absolute best roll in the city..none of the others can compete w/ that roll), the sexy dynamite roll, the zebra roll, a large bowl of spicy ramen (i recommend trying real ramen, never tried it other than cup o noodles..wow..for 3.50 it's filling and sooooo good), and a bowl of miso soup and 2 cups of tea..and for 8 more bucks i got an unagi roll and a yellowfin roll. The wait time was significantly long the first time i went, which is why I recommend getting a bowl of soup..the ramen..is omg amazing..or some appetizer. I need to try the other appetizers. My bro is a sushi snob so he knows his sushi and hands down their best roll is ther caramel crunch roll..it comes to you warm and oh so good..i would recommend getting 2-3 rolls and then getting the caramel roll last..omg..soooo good. The groupon and the coupons really help, especially if you're a big eater. The basic rolls where you can get at any sushi shop and even jewels are reasonable. It's when you get the special rolls that the price picks up, which is why I recommend using a coupon if you're going to gorge (3or more rolls) or sample the best of what they have to offer. If you're a skinny girl and 1 roll is too much for you, then you're fine. But w/o a coupon can be resonable. But, even if you have a bowl of ramen and a roll..you're good and that's under 10 bucks! If you get 2 special rolls, it can be close to $20..or you can get a special and a regular roll for under $20! It's in the hood..I live in the hood, and at first I was thinking, why is this place here..now I'm glad it is..it's too intimidating for your typical snooty person to come there and gives you the experience to try really good sushi w/o feeling like you're in a foo foo place. read more

I don't know how we're ever going to try a different sushi place after having Zoku. Their menu has traditional rolls as well as contemporary new favourites. When you first enter you are greeted warmly by not just the hostess but also the sushi chefs, very welcoming. They have the most amazing mural on their wall that features Koi fish, Dragons and a tiny tasteful tribute to Godzilla! The music they were playing wasn't the typical new age stuff you find in moist sushi places, which was a nice change of pace. It was more along the lines of Portishead and Cowboy Junkies and groups of that nature. The volume was at the perfect level, just loud enough to hear but not have to talk over. Fresh isn't an accurate enough word for their sushi and sashimi. I swear the fish MUST have been swimming no more than 24 hours before being put on our plate. We purposely stayed away from our traditional favourites because they had such a unique menu we didn't want to waste precious stomach space with things we already knew we liked. I started out with the spicy Miso soup which I've never had before. It was the perfect amount of heat, just enough to warm your mouth but not put it on fire. We had Lava Scallops which is baked scallop in homemade creme brulee with sweet soy sauce, and it melted in your mouth. We moved on to the Carmel Crunch which is a salmon roll that is quickly deep fried to make the rice crispy and the heat seems to caramelize the sugar in the rice giving it an amazing crunchy sweet flavour that complimented the richness of the salmon. We also tried a couple of their sashimi specials Katsuo tatki and Kampachy Usuzukuri. I enjoyed the Katsuo much more than the Kampachy,. The Katsuo is a light fish (seared bonito) that had a nice light citrus kick to it. The kampachy is a more dense dark meat which typically I'm not a fan of but tried anyway because you never know. As I said earlier the fish is crazy fresh and had a really appealing aroma to it, but I didn't care for the flavour, but that's just my preference. My boyfriend enjoyed this dish immensely. I also recommend the Komodo Cry roll, which is variation of a dragon roll but served warm with melted chihuahua cheese in it. The service at Zoku can't be topped. Unfortunately I can't remember our servers name but she had beautiful long dark hair and was more than helpful and attentive without being intrusive, three of my favourite traits in a server. Ordered delivery, which I'm usually hesitant to do when it's sushi, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Escolar Jalapaño Classic Maki - fresh and crunchy jalapeños had just enough kick without overpowering the hamachi. Sweet Potato Maki - Best roll in my order. There is something about sweet potato tempura that makes my heart sing and this roll brought that love to another level. Avocado Maki - nothing much to say other than the avocado was fresh, creamy and delicious. Vietnamese-style Veggie Spring Roll - not my favorite in Chicago (hence the minus one star), but okay. The sweet peanut sauce was very watery and too tangy, it overpowered the roll. I definitely want to try this place for dinner at the restaurant after such a great delivery experience. They are the best option for sushi in the Humboldt Park area and have very reasonable delivery/online ordering fees. Their noodle dishes are also quite good. I ordered delivery and it arrived hot and in ample proportions. The only reason I wouldn't give this place a 5/5 rating is that their maki selections are primarily made with spicy mayo and no other sauces. It would be nice to see more rooster or eel sauce, maybe a honey wasabi aoli but I don't want to sound too greedy! If you like spicy maki, they've got you covered. Recommendations: Lard Nar Noodle Dish, Spicy Tuna Maki, Chicago Maki, Escolar Avo Maki. BYOB, they don't have a beer/saki menu. read more

Zoku seems like one of those Asian restaurants that tries to do too much. I bet their sushi is really good. I, however, can't resist possibly finding the next greatest pad thai, so I only tried the Thai side of things. After seeing them pop up on grubhub, I took a shot. It was okay. The pad thai was a bit bland and had no hint of spice to it. It was kind of dry and gummy by the time it arrived, and delivery took a very long time (which was probably a contributing factor). The Pad See Ew was gummy and I could taste the noodles more than I could taste the sauce. It just wasn't great. Knowing full well that I'm probably a victim of ordering the wrong thing, I will try Zoku's sushi at some point in the future and possibly eat my 3-star review. read more

I tried this place using a Groupon and was very delighted with what I got. The sushi was pretty good and fresh. The thai food was also not bad but I'd stick to the shushi. We had the BLT and that was ok since the flavor is quite overpowering. However, we had the octopus sushi and that was my favorite. Service was great, prompt and polite. The spicy miso was by far the best I have had, the touch of sesame has enhanced the quality of the soup. Apart from that nothing was memorable. I have only ordered take out and delivery but I have not been disappointed. I will save the sashimi for when I am in house. I have had the Lava Scallops every time I have ordered and Carmel Crunch roll was really good. Their sauces are AH-MAZING! I had the best fried calamari last night that I can't stop thinking about it. It was fresh and tender. It was my first visit to Zoku. My initial thoughts of a pan-asian sushi restaurant in Humboldt Park bears a caveat - it's either hit or miss. The sushi is a hit so far. Oh, I wish I had liked Zoku more. It's the closest sushi place to our house, but what we got was pretty standard at best. The rolls we ordered were pretty dry (how dry?!), they were so dry they gave my throat razor burn. Um. That being said, they have really tasty crab rangoon. I'm a great connoisseur of crab rangoon, and I'd like to officially place them in my top five (which means that if that crab rangoon were on America's Next Top Model, it would be going to a distant land to do culturally insensitive photo shoots). Like I said, it's the closest sushi place to my house, so I'll continue to go there and hope that things get better. I have really high hopes for you, Zoku, step it up! read more

Zoku Sushi really crossed the boundaries on sushi. Their signature makis are unique and definitely are must trys from this restaurant. My personal favorites are Sexy Dynamite and Zebra, and trust me, the odder the names, the better they taste! They also have a variety of hot Thai dishes. I have tried most of their noodle dishes and I believe they have the perfected the Pad See Ew. Whether its beef or tofu, their see ew is perfectly cooked. I recommend trying it with extra egg. Also, their crab rangoons are quite delectable. I am quite picky about crab rangoon and Zoku did a fine job with them. They are a good balance of wonton and filling. Definitely a great appetizer before any meal. The interior still has some work to do, but with good food, it isn't noticeable. It's a nice, relaxing environment with good service and good food. Not the best sushi I've ever had, and not the cheapest sushi I've ever had, but I've learned that the two are nearly mutually exclusive in Chicago, so I'll take what I can get and Zoku is as good as anywhere around south Logan/east Humboldt park. Granted, I've never been inside, only ever ordered on grubhub, but it's been great every time - acceptably fresh, even when I get delivery on 100+ afternoons. Well-formed maki, just the right amount of sticky to the sushi rice, spicy mayo that isn't too spicy. They're pretty gluten free friendly, too, just make sure to specify that your rolls need to be prepared with clean hands on a clean surface and cut with a clean knife to try and lessen the cross contamination possibilities from things like their tempura rolls (and even if you don't have a soy allergy, you might want to say you do, because I don't think they seem to understand that soy sauce isn't gluten free), and 95% of the time, it'll be fine. No clue as to the quality of service or the ambience, but for quick, cheap, acceptably tasty and mostly-reliable makizushi delivery in Logan Square, Zoku's where it's at. read more

This place was horrible. I went in and the lady had horrible breath speaking to me. Maybe it was the culture. She looked very pretty but she smelled so bad and she was very rude to my husband and I. Also the food took much longer than expected and we got the wrong order. They charged us more. This restaurant was a mess. There was one other table and my table and they seemed as if they were struggling. I also ordered from them because they were open late and I decided to give them one more try. Once again I got the wrong order and the driver who delivered my food reeked of cannabis. I made a comment about it and the man asked me if I wanted to purchase some.... I think they should do Background checks on their delivery guys. I was very upset. Their work is not very professional at all. This place is horrible. We bought a groupon a few months ago and when we got there they were closed so we went somewhere else. Planned to return the groupon but then forgot. Since we were in the area Sunday we decided to use it. After ordering I decided to check yelp and saw that the most recent review said food poisoning. We should have just left then but my boyfriend Said we'd be fine. He was wrong. We both had to call off work and are now suffering from FOOD POISONING. This restaurant doesn't even deserve the star I gave them. The food is not that great and costs too much for what you get. We will NEVER be back. read more
