It was getting late and this place was convenient and open and had seemed to have good ratings on Google. So we had to try it out. It was a cold date. There was no one in the restaurant, but the staff was very friendly and it felt like a private event just for ourselves. We got a traditional Taiwanese appetizer and some spicy sautéed fish in a sizzling beef and pepper platter. All we're good, especially the fish definitely worth trying. Solid Taiwanese food spot! Plenty of seating and also has large tables that are perfect for group dinners or celebrations. We liked everything we tried - some of the standouts were the Taiwanese 3 cup chicken, beef in black pepper sauce on sizzling plate, and the string bean with bean curd. I do wish the stinky tofu was a bit "stinkier" and bolder in flavor. Braised pork with rice solid and comforting, as expected. One dish we are hoping to try was the smoked duck, but unfortunately they had run out that night. Definitely something I'd want to try in the future. OK Canaan is the sister restaurant to OK Ryan on College Point Blvd with almost identical menus, but OK Canaan on Main St has a much larger dining room, accommodating much larger parties. In fact, my son was here a few months ago when a friend of his took up the whole place for his birthday party. The Taiwanese cuisine here is solid and I would make this a regular stop in our dinner rotation. Street parking in the neighborhood can be a little challenging but not impossible with some pay spots directly in front of the restaurant if you get lucky and spots around the corner by the Botanical Garden. Some of my favorite dishes that we always get are the 3 Cup Chicken and Tea Smoked Duck, both very flavorful poultry dishes. Other favorites of our family are the Stir-fried Cabbage & Chinese Bacon and the Braised Pork Rice, which comes with a tea boiled egg & pickled cabbage. My son always wants an extra Braised Pork Rice because he wants a whole bowl to himself. The menu is quite substantial and it will take quite a few visits to go through. As someone born in Taiwan i like checking out Taiwanese restaurants. This one is amazing. The food tastes are quite yummy without being too much. We had the ba wan, the ba ke soup(pork), Taiwanese stinky tofu, and salty egg covered bitter melon. All the dishes were great, very well flavored and something our party enjoyed. The search for the best beef noodle soup continues, and Ok Canaan seemed like a promising candidate from Yelp reviews. My fiance and I arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday, and the restaurant was quite empty except for 1 other solo diner. We ordered the beef noodle soup ($15) and got our order within 10 minutes. The BNS here is just okay/mid at best. While it definitely tastes like a taiwanese beef noodle soup, it's lacking depth in the broth and in the flavor of the beef. The menu also notes that this is supposed to be spicy - we didn't pick up on any spice. To their credit, portions are hearty, beef is tender, and their pickled mustard greens are decent. I'm not the biggest fan of the noodle choice, which didn't quite pick up the flavors of the broth. Service is kind & efficient. This is per my personal preference. Wanted to get dinner in Flushing with Taiwanese food and came across Ok Canaan due to the great reviews. However the dinner was a bit disappointing. The waiter was extremely friendly when I walked in and the entire time during dinner. Even though it was just her manning 4 tables and take outs she still managed to check in on us throughout the dinner. We ordered a couple of dishes. 1. The braised pork over rice was good however I felt like because the braised pork was pretty saucy there should've been more rice. There was very little pork and a lot of sauce as well. 2. The three cup chicken was kind of bland, didn't really taste the soy sauce / basil much. The flavor was very light. 3. The beef in black pepper was good but nothing mind blowing. 4. The duck blood soup was also a bit bland. 5. The sweet and sour fish fillet was a bit over powering. I felt like the sauce would've been better suited for pork and the fish would've been better with a lighter flavored sauce. 6. I think the chicken cutlet was pretty unique. It wasn't breaded, it was more so coated with something like the Korean rice crispy. The chicken also wasn't dry it was pretty moist, perfectly cooked but a little cold. Also I think it would've been better with some dipping sauce. If you are looking for a spot to eat, I'd still recommend coming just to try it out. Ambiance could be better. Lighting was not great either but that might have been due to the scaffolding on the outside. Food though was on point. Items I ordered: - Stinky tofu - finally found a spot that makes it good like back in the day on Prince street called 66 Prince. - XO eggplant vermicelli - this dish was so flavorful and was delicious. I could eat this all the time. - Braised pork over rice - was so delicious as well but I still kept going back to the XO eggplant vermicelli dish. Tried the butterfly bean coconut drink - probably only thing I didn't really care for. Save your 7.50. Just tasted like coconut milk with coconut jello on the bottom. Located about a mile south of Downtown Flushing is the strangely named OK Canaan Taiwanese Gourmet. Ever on the lookout for Taiwanese comfort food, I drop in for dinner on a Sunday. Ambience: the interior is very .... Red. When we walked in at 7 PM, it was empty. This is not a good sign to be empty on a weekend during dinner time. Food: we ordered: Shredded Beef with chili - a staple of any self respecting Taiwanese restaurant. The beef was tender, but it could have been spicier. 3/5 Gua Bao - pork belly served in a steamed Bao. The Bao unfortunately looked like they reheated it . Instead of being moist and steaming, it had some cracks on it, suggesting it dried out. It's a shame because the pork belly was on point. 3/5 Fried Intestine - the other staple of Taiwanese restaurants. This was the star of the meal. Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside. 5/5 Paratha with Curry - I wasn't aware this was Taiwanese ... it's a grilled flat bread with a chicken curry dipping sauce. For those familiar with the Thai version of this, you will be disappointed. 3/5 Service - we waited unusually long for the food. The shredded beef and Paratha finally came out as we were almost done with dinner. This slowness is odd, considering we were one of three tables in the whole restaurant. The other table complained about the delays and canceled some of their order. From what I could tell, there was only one waitress and maybe one person in the kitchen cooking. Stumbled upon this no frills restaurant. We ordered the braised chicken leg over rice and the braised pork belly over rice. Both were really tender and flavorful and a great combo to eat on a fall afternoon. We love that the dishes came with vegetables and a cold cucumber appetizer. Legit sh't right here. They offer three different kinds of stinky tofu. We got the classic appetizer version of deep-fried cubes. It came with 20+ pieces and could've easily fed four people. The beef noodle soup was pretty good, but I prefer bok choy to Chinese spinach as the veggie. However, the "red stew" (hong shao) flavor was on point with just that spicy kick you want on a cold winter's day. The eggplant vermicelli wasn't bad, but I don't like dried shrimp, so it wasn't my favorite. SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS HIDDEN GEM!! The food was DELICIOUS, tasted beautifully homemade, was full of flavor and generously big! We had the beef noodle soup (not pictured) which was one of the best I've had. My favorite was this Braised Beef and Tendon stew, soooo delicious and soft. Salt and pepper chicken was so tender and flavorful I cannot recommend this place enough. Everything was really affordable for the family-sized portions. The server (who appeared to be the owner) was really nice and gave us these desserts as a finisher! This place seems family owned and serves really authentic comforting homestyle food. I have ordered from here before, and the beef noodle soup was one of the best I've had in a while. the soup had depth of flavor and the beef was well flavored and tender. Since I was in the area, we decided to stop in for lunch. Even though our server was extremely friendly and polite, the freezing cold restaurant made it difficult to enjoy our lunch. Yes, it was a cold, rainy day, but turn on some heat for the customers. My noodle soup was cold before I was even halfway through. The soup and beef were still delicious but the addition of broccoli was just weird. It absolutely did not complement the noodle soup dish. And I get it, many small establishments will use whatever fresh veggie they have on hand, but the strong taste of broccoli just does not go together with that dish. No big deal, I just picked the broccoli out. However, the overcooked noodles were difficult to overlook. I did enjoy their stinky Tofu, it was very stinky. They also had a sweeter dipping sauce that was different from most others that are very spicy. Would I go again? Possibly. First, I was very impressed by the service and communication of the staff. I made a reservation for the Friday after Thanksgiving for our friends gathering of 16 people. They kept in contact through text by providing menus, recommendations, and allowed us to pre-order, to make things easier. During our time there, they were very accommodating of our large party, which was very helpful. The restaurant itself is no frills, and relatively small - this was a bit tricky as the table barely fit our large party - other restaurants that we have been to have been able to put a larger circumference table on top in order to expand the seating, but this wasn't an option here. It made for some very cozy seating! They also have a cute photo opportunity in the form of a Taiwan shaped frame. Now the food. We ordered string beans, corn chicken soup, 3 delights tofu soup, seafood noodle soup, young chow fried rice, 3 cup chicken, flys head, xo eggplant vermicelli, smoked duck, and fillet steak. Honestly, all of it was amazing! Our only problem was not getting larger portions with such a large party. Some standouts were the 3 cup chicken (very tender and flavorful), smoked duck (amazing smoky flavor and tender), and fillet steak (lots of flavor and cooked well). The soups were very good as well, and the flys head was tasty and well prepared. Afterwards, we had taro in hot syrup for dessert and they also gave us some extra desserts of nougat. We came here looking for a good family lunch and that's what we got. I can count on my hand only a few good taiwanese restaurants to be found in Queens. This place was a solid choice for finding some of my favorite taiwanese dishes. It's mostly family style though they do have rice platters for lunch. We ordered the 3 cup chicken, flyheads, pumpkin tofu egg casserole and salt and pepper pork chop. This was enough food for about 5 people. The 3 cup chicken had flavor though it came out a bit dry but had plenty of yummy basil in the dish. The flyheads though very hard to eat were nice little pellets of flavor and the waitress had warned us it would be a little spicy and honestly the spice made it even better but the forewarning made me look out for the little red birds eye chilies studded among the chives. The best way to eat it was to scoop this on top of your rice bowl and shovel into mouth. I didn't get to try the stinky tofu and honestly not brave enough to but we did get a wonderful pumpkin tofu egg casserole. The soupy contents were a little burst of flavor every time you bite into the bouncy tofus. This dish also had broccoli, cabbage and carrots and the pumpkin just added a tiny bit of sweetness to it. My favorite was definitely the salt and pepper pork chops. I mean who doesn't enjoy a nice crispy fried bite? The cutlet was moist on the inside and every bite was crunchy all the way through. So simple and executed properly made this so enjoyable. This place is a bit off the beaten path and is part of a deserted area of Flushing so expect a quiet meal here. The waitress was very attentive and food came out timely it was almost like we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The restaurant was not as big as it looked from the outside. There were maybe about 5 tables tops. Probably great for takeout. There was just something about the water I did not like so maybe order the tea instead. We were looking for a quick bite to eat after visiting the Queens Botanical Garden and stumbled upon OK Canaan which is conveniently located across the street. The restaurant had just opened for the day, and we were the first customers. Upon entering you immediately notice that the décor is mostly red, as in, red walls and red table cloths. There is a ramp to the left of the entrance, along with a small set of stairs leading down to the dining floor. We ordered the Taiwanese Style Lo Mein, Pork Chop Combo, Fried Chicken Leg Combo and scallion pancakes appetizer. The Lo Mein was okay. It had nice flavor, but I've had better elsewhere. Same with the scallion pancakes. Luckily, both the Pork Chop Combo and Chicken Combo were delightful! They both came with some pickled vegetables, steamed cabbage and boiled tea egg. The rice that came with it had minced pork on top. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had a nice crunchy skin. The pork chop was tasty and tender. I would come back just to eat these two dishes again. The waitress was super friendly and helpful. And the service was fast! We barely waited five minutes before the food was delivered to our table. Was looking for a place that served lu rou fan because the trains weren't working to go to taiwanese gourmet. This place is underneath some scaffolding when we went and was a few blocks away from the 7 station but it was worth the walk. Went on easter sunday and it was just us, another family party and one sweet server helping everyone with a smile and graciousness. We pretty much ordered everything fired lol and it was all great. The lunch box combos serve the rice in the shape of taiwan which is so cute. The popcorn chicken pieces were fried crispy with generous amounts of basil, however the pieces were just a little bit bigger than bite sized. I really loved the fried fish filet lol, a little bit sweet without being soggy. so good and the lunch combo is a great deal. fly's head was good and the salt and pepper pork chops were great. lu rou fan is yummy too, trust me each person needs their own portion or else you'll be fighting for it. the server gave us some free dessert at the end that was homemade by the chef. extremely sweet and homey feeling restaurant, come support! read more

Maybe one reason is that I stick to ordering traditional Taiwanese dishes even though the menu is a mixed bag of food from all parts of China, including Cantonese, Szechuan and northern Chinese cuisine to name a few. Lot of reviews I read said some of those dishes were good. I usually stick to the regional food that the restaurant should be known for, so I will not be commenting on anything outside of Taiwanese food here. There are a few dishes done quite well enough that I will come back for them specifically. Top three dishes I have tried are Minced Pork on Rice, Three Cups Chicken, and Stir Fried Cabbage with XO Sauce. It's not to say that their other dishes are bad, such as the Taiwanese Stirred Fried Rice Noodle (they used vermicelli instead and I don't know why, but tasted decent), Fried Stinky Tofu, or Fried Pork Chops, but none of them were really memorable. The epic fail for me was the traditional Taiwanese dish of Stirred Fried Pork Kidneys in Sesame Oil. Check out my picture, it came in a bowl of broth, rather than coated in sesame oil. If you want to try the real thing, walk ten minutes down to Main Street Imperial Taiwanese Cuisine. All in all, service was okay and place is clean, nothing special but not bad either. I will stop by every once in a while for the dishes I really liked. Hopefully, when I do, they can convince me that they have more to offer. read more

I think Ok Canaan is certainly more than OK. In fact, when they're on their A game, they're one of the better Taiwanese options in the borough. Similarly to their sister restaurant (#1), they have a really good selection of food, which is not completely limited to Taiwanese fare. With a quality mix of good food and service, I would consider them a go-to establishment. As puzzling as the English name is, the Chinese name (台灣好滋味) is far more straightforward ("Delicious taste of Taiwan?"). It's not a big restaurant by any means, but they've done a good job enabling groups of all kinds to enjoy a meal here. The interior is clean and extremely red (walls and table cloths). The latter is so Asian that it's kind of awesome. In terms of the food, there's a lot to like. Their fried salted basil chicken (鹽酥雞) is a little too easy to snack on, the dongpo pork (東坡肉) is nice and fatty as is their minced pork over rice (滷肉飯), their flys head (蒼蠅頭) is remarkably solid, and their smoked duck (招牌熏鴨) is surprisingly tasty. I also feel strongly about their eggplant and pork (茄子肉) and three cup chicken (三杯雞). That's a good amount of dishes and I think they've managed to impress each time. Some dishes I haven't been so high on have been some major Taiwanese classics that I wish were just a hair better. These include the oyster pancake （蚵仔煎), beef noodle soup (牛肉麵), and the stinky tofu (臭豆腐). The latter wasn't all that stinky, despite being pretty good overall. I think a pungent odor is practically required to get this dish right (#1). Service is friendly and super accommodating. They're willing to make substitutions and are good about conveying all requests to the kitchen staff. They used to tout they were a no MSG establishment and used to have a killer special of 3 dishes + a soup for $27.50. While the price per dish have certainly risen over the years, I feel they've made some substantial improvements to the overall variety of their food.
