I was warmly greeted by a few different associates. And then came Kyle -- He was attentive to me while I asked a lot of product information questions about the brand. I was amazed at how knowledgeable he was and more amazed that he had only worked there for a few months. He seemed like a very seasoned and well trained employee. I ended up buying a pair of Kizik's on the spot because of Kyle's fine service. I work in a retail store that sells shoes and I get a pretty handsome discount, so I don't often shoe shop at another store. But I was so wowed by Kyle's service that there was no way I would leave the store without purchasing from him. Did I mention he pulled up one of those low stools and helped me put on the shoes and made sure they fit properly. Who does that these days! Usually, they bring the shoes out, drop them at your feet and head off to do something else, only to return if you want to buy. There's a reason his business card says "Rockstar Sales Associate." She was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to understand what I was looking for. Kay had me try on a few different options and really focused on getting the right fit and comfort, rather than rushing the process. Telling us she strongly recommends we sign up without knowing what our needs are. As soon as we were able to get a word in to politely decline, her energy shifted from pushy to straight up cold. As if it was personal. Here's the thing - my family and I shop at REI very seldomly. Hence why we have no use for a paid membership. And now after the last two experiences, we will never set foot in an REI store ever again.

I'm not even sure I could call the customer service rude because it was actually non-existent. Zero smiles, zero eye contact and zero "hello, can I help you?" A worker walked up to me while I was waiting to get into the dressing room and simply said "name?" And proceeded to write down my name without any further comment. When I exited the dressing room, the second woman present didn't even ask if everything worked out, lacking any acknowledgement of my existence. While looking through the sales rake, I made a friendly comment to the worker about not being able to see the see anything without my glasses, and she made no attempt to return the friendly gesture.
