AMBIENCE: I love the overall feel of the place. They implemented social distancing and masks are worn. They have some outdoor seating but it is limited due to spacing. I love the live plants in the building as well. It is very warm and greeting. SERVICE: the waitress was dry around the clock no matter how bright your personality may be. I felt like I was in a comedy sketch where no matter how pleasant I was it was like, "So you gonna order?" Vibe from her. Yeah wasn't fond of the service. Not to mention I was feeling like I had to make an effort to get my food at every turn. You leave my bowl one spot... I ask am I supposed to bring it to the register to be rung up... " it doesn't matter, you can leave it there if you want". I go to the outside seating and realize I don't have my wings... "yeah we call your name so you can come get it". This is my first time here so... yeah you could have told me that after asking about my bowl looking confused as a child on a spinning wheel. Anyways... on to the food. FOOD: I LOVED the Asian wings. Full of flavor and the wings weren't skimpy. As for the bowl, I enjoyed the flavors that I put together. I do have a take away... most contents of the bowl were luke at best. The warmth came from the teriyaki sauce at best. I will say that this is partially due to most contents being out ... basically like a poke bowl place. Maybe if the rice wasn't like sticky rice, I could wrap my mind around it not being a certain temp. BUT THAT KOKEE NEVER DIAPPOINTS. and they have ice cream i haven't tried yet. Oh and I noticed they have cake slices in their fridge display! So I gotta go back for the dessert section and wings alone lol. OVERALL: I give three stars. I do this because the service is minimal at best and the zzaam bowl is the selling point so... for it to be the main item off with sticky rice and luke at best protein... it just didn't sit well with me. Especially for those prices. I spent 21 bucks for the bowl and wings. A part of me wanted to give 4 stars though due to the milk tea and dessert options being so awesome including their zzaam Asian wings. I really think that service is a vital part of the food service industry which is why I always appreciate effort made and am thrown off when the absolute minimal is given. Stopped here for the first time and order a bowl with spicy chicken, hot wings, and fried dumplings. Wish they had some kind of list of all of the food and sauce options with a description of what they were and tasted like for people that have never came. Never spoke to anyone until the very end when I got my order since you ordered off a kiosk. The bowl was meh and the chicken was extremely overcooked to the point where it was so dry it pretty much crumbled. The fried hot wings on the other hand were very good with a spicy sweet heat that I would definitely get again. Zzam Came for a weekday lunch in a party of 4. Because of its location in a strip mall there was plenty of parking. I ordered the Korean street ramen which comes with meat option (I chose spicy pork), rice and kimchi. I also got a Thai Milk tea with boba. Glad we were able to get a late night meal from Zzaam, here's why: Food: B+ We ended up getting two of the Zzaam bowls (basically bbimpap) for take-out. The food came out on time, but unfortunately we weren't able to pick it up until later than expected. But even after picking it up, the food was solid and the ingredients were cooked well. Price: B The food you get for the price is great. The bowl had a lot of vegetables and ingredients and enough rice to mix well where you don't feel overwhelmed by just rice. We called letting them know if we could cancel because we weren't able to make it in time, but they offered to stay open a little later so we could get our food. We all ended up getting the bulgogi beef which is a dollar extra but worth it. They had so many things to choose from and so much customization available. You choose your protein than your veggies than your sauce. No matter who you are you can find something you like. So this supposed to be Korean style dining/take out right. To be honest, I've had better. However, for a place here in VA it's okay. They got chicken wings that are over priced for what it is but it's decent. I've tried the jap chae and it's dry which is wild because they are wet noodles! The Mando is good but again over priced you can go Walmart and or any grocery store and find a bag of 10+ for the same price and cook it at home for cheaper... also I like the chicken katsu it's crunchy and yummy but the sides they have where they let you pick that's in the little glass case I feel like have sat out for days and are over fermented. They have rice bowls, ramen, boba tea and best of all their restaurant is a total vibe. I loved all the choices of Kokee tea, their fish bowl on the table and all the many plants. Yesterday, on 25 AUG 22 I visited this place and thought life was good until the moment when as I was driving home I realized that there was a black hair in my taro drink. I parked my car at the nearby parking barfed a couple of times and disposed of the drink. Stay away from this place it's not worth the squeeze. I used to love boba and have been to this place multiple times but this one instance ruined it for me. If you're like me and you grew up in these streets, you remember a time when you had to walk 30 miles in the snow to Richmond just to get something other than Applebees. Well the times are definitely a'changin and the tri-cities are getting a lot of new and diverse places to eat. Zzaam is a cool new fast food option on the scene. Think Korean chipotle without the gi upset. They have a build your own bowl/burrito option thing going on which I have tried, but not my favorite. What I really dig is the Korean Street Ramen, which you can get spicy or spicy. Just kidding it comes in mild, but don't be a punk get the spicy. They also have wings and chicken/pork katsu which will be next on my list to try. I am sad that they put this in the same location as Koreana. The restaurant has been there forever and is the OG Korean place in the area. I do think the two are very different and you should check out both for totally different experiences. read more

Our group of nine ordered a variety of rice bowls and Korean tacos as well as mandoo. Each bowl comes with your choice of protein, toppings, and sauce, mimicking a Chipotle-style setup. While Zzaam! does not skimp on portion size (you get a HUGE bowl for $8!), our group unanimously thought that the bowls were just subpar, with an insufficient amount of protein per bowl. The mandoo (dumplings) were decent, but again, nothing to write home about. The individual who ordered Korean tacos didn't finish his dish, noting that the spiciness of the sauce overpowered the other flavors in the tacos, making them less than enjoyable to eat. The idea of quick Asian food is always alluring, but in the case of Zzaam! I would suggest looking elsewhere to satisfy your Korean food fix! read more

I have mixed feelings about the place. It's definitely not an authentic Korean restaurant. It's more of a fusion with Americanized cuisine. They do have some unique twists and flavorings of traditional dishes I'm used to and a unique method of serving. The price is pretty fair for the amount of food you get and you do have the option to get the traditional korean side dishes such as kimchi. This place also has a bubble tea bar with quite the variety of flavors to choose from. I wasn't a big fan though as I found the bubble teas to be too icy. Reminded me of flavored slush. I don't mind getting their chicken katsu platter. The facility itself is super clean, easy to locate, and have plenty of parking. I do give this place a solid 3/5. Mine was yet another case of "I'm going to Taco Bell - oh wait, what's this place?" I was surprised to discover that Zzaam is a tastier alternative, and for around the same as I would have spent anyway! I let staff members know that I was a first-timer and they were polite, patient, and extremely helpful with figuring out what combinations would make my experience great. I had a general idea of what I wanted after browsing the menu and was allowed to sample the spicy chicken and one of the sauces to see if they were "THE" level of heat I was looking for, and not more. As other customers have pointed out, the selection process is very similar to Chipotle - pick a style, pick a meat/ protein, pick your veggies and sides, then pick your sauce. Very straightforward but with a great variety to choose from (a LOT of bang for the buck, too)! I ordered a noodle bowl with spicy chicken and broth, a great mix of veggies and sides (which all seemed to go together very well), and got to try some of the sauces. The creamy chili sauce is great if you're dipping off to the side (a staff member recommended against mixing it in with the noodle/ broth dishes since it's mayo-based). The signature ZZAAM! sauce had a nice bite to it but wasn't overwhelming and will probably be my choice from now on. I've noticed others recommend specific items (like chicken katsu) but didn't see them anywhere on the menu - not sure if they're similar to "secret menu" items but I'm sure to be back to find out! Staff members were awesome to work with and they all made me feel welcomed in the restaurant. Everything was clean, service was spot-on, and my experience was very memorable. It looks like they've got a nice variety of brews on tap, so I'll have to come back and explore that side of the menu as well! So breakdown: korean fusion that takes korean flavors and allows you to transform them into basic dishes with some spin-offs (cheese in a bimbimbap?) came for a quick bite on sunday evening, wasn't crowded (thank goodness). This is a walk up, place your order for seated or to go. Now if you're hungry like I was when I arrived, PLEASE take the moment to peruse the menu. it's structured but you may miss items like COMBOS plastered on the wall that i completely bypassed. I went through an entire order of bimbimbap (up to 6 toppings and a mix of sauces) and added a full order of mandoo (6 fried korean dumplings). Now the dumplings were fried with the order so they weren't soggy and old, but i only received three of the six. I said i'll take the other portion of my order so they wouldn't have to go through the motions of crediting my card back. Now, this Korean lady comes out asks what they did, ask me how much I paid, then reprimands one of the young ladies within my eyesight and earshot. The lady brought me the rest of my dumplings (thank goodness because they're crunchy things of goodness) but then there was some miscommunication so she pulled all three ladies together to instruct them on proper management channels (good approach but not really a proper place). they all proceeded to complain and theorize on the issues (still within my earshot) when the Korean Lady goes to the back. I'm a HUGE fan of the Hull Street location of Zzaam's, can't say enough good things about it. When I heard one was opening up near my parents house(they are also fans) I was so excited. I went here with a friend of mine after telling her how good it was. She was impressed, yay another fan! While I liked my bowl of Jap Chae, I was slightly dissapointed with the service and atmosphere. Hull Street is very personable. When I said I was ordering the JapChae bowl with spicy pork, they started putting it together. The person making the bowl did not ask what topping I wanted and very speedily threw some toppings on it and sent it to the back to be prepared. I was a bit taken off guard because I'm use to choosing my toppings. Luckily I'm not too picky so I accepted it. It did taste yummy. I went back again with my dad another day and got the kimchee burrito. I ordered it the exact same way that I order at the other location yet for some reason it tasted different, bland. Due to my ever love of the fresh food that Zzaam's provides we went back again to grab food to take home. I ordered the salad(my new favorite dish) and yay! It was tasty and fresh!
