This used to be one of my wife's and my favorite places--a charming French bistro with great food and an atmosphere that always made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, our most recent visit completely changed that. We had reservations for a Saturday evening and were seated promptly. That's where the positive experience ended. After being seated, we waited 20 minutes without a single acknowledgment from staff--no greeting, no water, nothing. Meanwhile, other parties who arrived after us were attended to right away, which made the situation even more frustrating. After more than 30 minutes of being completely ignored, we decided to leave. It was honestly one of the most uncomfortable and disappointing dining experiences we've had. As strong supporters of local restaurants, this was especially disheartening given how much we used to enjoy coming here. Sadly, this experience has permanently changed how we feel about this place, and we won't be returning. I hope the staff takes this as a reminder that every customer deserves the same level of attention and respect. read more

I had bookmarked Épernay Bistro for a while, and finally came here for dinner with my husband on Wednesday. We came here a couple of times when it was still Billy's Boston Chowder House. The brick walls and blackboards looked familiar. There's still a long table in the middle. With the new chairs and tablecloths, the place looked more classy than before. The floating shelves at the top of the walls were all lined with wine bottles. There're some gigantic bottles towards the back as well. It's quite a nice place to have a quiet, intimate dinner with the causal, yet upscale vibe. There're about eight tables (1-2 persons@) while we're there, and service was attentive, despite having only one server. For the $80 dinner for 2 special, we got to pick one item from each of the first two selections to share, two entrees, and one beignet each. We also added a beet salad to share, and my husband had the wine pairing. For our first course, the two baked oysters were cheesy and rich. It would be better if they were bigger, though. Our second course, the caramelized onion soup was perfectly prepared, one of the best I had ever had. The beet salad was refreshing, and the dressing was so tasty that it made arugula tasted good. I had the sole as my entree; it was cooked well, light and delicious. I took a bite of my husband's slow braised short ribs; it was tender and flavorful. The beignets were delightful, and paired really well with the dark chocolate and salted caramel sauce. I really appreciated that all their hot dishes came out really hot. Overall, it was a really enjoyable dinner. Would be back to have the onion soup again and try other items on the menu. read more

We tried Epernay Bistro for the first time last week and tried their $80 Four Courses for Two menu (menu shown). We added a beet salad to augment the meal. We also added one $45 wine pairing. We chose the baked oysters to start. The seasoning and taste was good, but the oysters themselves were incredibly tiny, which was disappointing. Normally, it's two for $12, and if we had ordered these for $12, it would have been even more disappointing. I didn't know oysters came this small! Next was the French onion soup, which was very good. Cheesy, lots of onion, flavorful, satisfying piece of bread under the cheese. Perfectly fine portion size to share. And serve hot, which was great. The beet salad we added ($16) was very good too from a seasoning standpoint and it was a good size to share. Just nice to have some vegetables to go with the food since we opted for soup from the featured menu. For the main course, my wife had the sole, which she enjoyed very much, and I had the Beef bourguignon, which was also great. Good size portions for both, taste spot on, also served delightfully hot. Finally we had the beignets, which were smaller, but tasted great and the sauces were more than enough to drench your beignets and still have extra to eat alone if you're so inclined. We were! The wine pairings were all good, and while I'm sure the port would have gone well with the dessert, I opted for the Sauternes wine, which was pleasantly sweet yet still refreshing and not overly sweet/"thick" like port can be. Service was excellent. Even though there was only one server for everyone, we never felt it was lacking in any way. The decor was pleasant and comfortable as well. So all in all, it was a very pleasant dining experience with the tiny oysters being the sole disappointment. Came here for dinner on valentines weekend and it was a great choice! The inside is super cute and vibey. We did the dinner for 2 for $40 pp, which includes the baked oyster, French onion soup, risotto, beef bourguignon, and beignets which I thought was a really good deal. My favorite tho was definitely the smoked salmon soup. So much flavor and just tasted sooo good, you have to try it! The risotto was really tasty too. Also the beignets came out warm and were fried to the perfect fryness and exceeded my expectations. The Moules are out of this world and better than any and ALL the ones we have had in France! The baked Brie was amazing! As new residents to Los Gatos we tried this hidden gem on Sunday and then had to return for more deliciousness the following Thursday! Our server was named Yvonne. It's located on a quiet small street. Parking is a bit difficult. It wasn't busy in the morning. It's great for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. I've always enjoyed their special menu. We ordered what they called Epernay burger, which has cult. We came here for a date night and loved the food, but a bit dismayed by the service. Small narrow restaurant but the tables are spaced out in a way where we had ample of privacy for our date. The most disappointing part of this place was the service. The waitress did not seem interested at all in serving us, and when she finally did come by would put on THE fakest smile. When you have $500 caviar on the menu (not that we ordered it...) the service better sweep you off your feet! Regardless, we enjoyed the food and drinks. I liked my red wine (though there aren't too many options for red wine by the glass), and appreciated that they offer half glass additional pours, so you can sample various wines within a more reasonable budget. The salmon pate was a nice appetizer to start with, easily spreadable. My husband loved his french onion soup which had ample amounts of melted cheese on top for me to steal. We also had the burger which was cooked to perfection and very juicy. I absolutely loved my Sole fish dish. So disappointed in this place. We had heard good things so we went for brunch in the afternoon on a Saturday only to be told that the chef had to leave so they weren't serving anything until later that day. A couple weeks later we decided to try going for brunch again. We were seated, then someone came out and once again said that the chef had to leave, so no service. Seriously, this is how you run a restaurant? We wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and try one more time, so we tried a Saturday for dinner. The service was so, so slow, nobody is engaging or friendly. The food was not that good and to make matters worse I had asked to take the rest of my meal home. Glad I got to cross Épernay Bistro off my list of places to try, and it was a huge plus that the overall experience was delightful. My husband and I were on a double date with our friends, so I appreciated the restaurant's intimate ambiance. This place was the most authentic when it came to service. We were at dinner for nearly 3 hours, which reminded me of Paris. The food took a long time to be prepared, and I felt that the wait staff was not as attentive. As long as you're not in a rush, champagne it up and enjoy hearty conversations at your table while waiting a while for your orders. We ordered a couple of appetizers including a charcuterie board and bacon wrapped dates stuffed with cheese. My favorite among the apps was their selection of cheeses. They tasted fresh and had very distinct flavors and textures: a type of hard cheese, a semi-soft like a manchego, a tart and creamy one like goat cheese, maybe a sharp cheddar?, and definitely a soft brie-like cheese. The entrees were fantastic. 3 out of the 4 of us got a beef bourguignon, and I got the filet. The beef bourguignon was incredibly tender, but I did think it could've used a little more salt. My filet, however, was excellent with every bite. The meat was cooked to medium rare perfection, and I enjoyed the other elements on my dish, such as the onions and potato 3-cheese puff pastry. I came here for brunch with two friends on the weekend! We all had the french toast, which was fluffy and very sweet. We also each got a spritzer drink, mine I believe was called Tea Thyme while my friends each got a ?strawberry?-cucumber refresher. While we all enjoyed our french toasts (though it does lean on the sweet side--and I didn't even use the maple syrup), the two cucumber spritzes had a little bit of a weird after taste that we didn't enjoy. I did like my tea thyme spritz, so it might be good to choose your drink carefully! The restaurant itself is nicely decorated with a lovely little outdoor patio space. We also had a very friendly server. I would come back again, but maybe try some other parts of the menu! read more

IMHO This was a great choice for our couples' New Year's Eve dinner. Such a cute little gem on Main Street, where I don't normally visit. That's gonna change! The menfolk ordered a dozen oysters, $46 and escargot, $17. We ladies opted for the Truffle Pommes frites, $14, which came with ketchup and house made aioli. I can attest to the yumminess and crispiness of the frites. This was followed by a beet salad, $16, bibb salad, $16, French onion soup, $16. Our entrees were Boeuf bourguignon, $34, 8 oz. Filet mignon, $52, and Sole Sautee, $34. Both men thought their meat meals were good, but not great. I loved my sole and would definitely order it again. Portions were good and we definitely brought home leftovers. For dessert, we enjoyed the beignets, $12 and strawberry shortcake, $14, and a glass of Tawny Port, $14. We did mention it jokingly because we didn't want to be rude. I have never had filet mignon 'boiled' before, it was their special for Valentine's Day with crab. This small and cozy brassiere had a very nice feel and took you away from the hustle of downtown Los Gatos. Started off with 2 sets of Champagne pairings which is a great way to sample higher end Champagne without paying the bottle price....highly recommend! For the beginning of our Parisian meal, the onion soup had more cheese then what I am use too and the broth was slightly on the lighter side of past onions soups tastings but still delicious in its own way. The salmon rillettes was excellent and very generous in portion size as it had ample chucks of dressed salmon and paired very well with the Champagne. The entrees of duck confit (1/4 piece) and the Petrale sole (which was the special) were both generous in size and each were prepared well as both were tender and packed a good amount of flavor; I would have to say the sole was a little underwhelming when compared to the duck. Dessert recommended by the waiter was the Beignets paired with home made dark chocolate sauce and a salted caramel was a nice finish to the meal; the beignets themselves were a little dense but the salted caramel helped resolve that issue. Personally, this restaurant was a surprise disappointment for me. From the photos and how packed the place were, I had high expectations. Foods were salty for most of the dishes from the soup of the day, escargots, short ribs, etc. the snails were also not fresh. I do think the service was average as well. Restaurant is cozy and on the dimmed side. I wished I could say positive things about it, but after a 2h drive, I felt it was not worth the efforts. I didn't finish the foods, and I didn't bother to pack them. Overall, it was just meh. It was not horrible experience to have 1 or 2 stars, but it didn't deserve anymore than 3... Tip: parking is available down the road by the park. Don't spend time circling the downtown route like I did as there are many lights and pedestrians. read more
