Burns Medical School in Kaka'ako, but has moved across the street from the Hawaiian Chip Company! How convenient! They share the same free parking lots! When you walk in, you will be warmly greeted by Rose Ling, the Manager. She is so helpful and enthusiastic! Wow! I want everything now! I was aiming for the Salmon plate first and got distracted by the Filipino Lemonade and the Cranberry Refresher. (The humidity in the late afternoon has something to do with it!) Yes - I went right before closing, so I got all of my questions answered and had lots of attention since I was the last customer of the day! So I've been here a few times and got different items to try each time - banana bread, brisket bowl, oxtail soup, and prime rib. While some of these dishes are great, I think that others could be better is there was more salt added to it as it was a little bland. However , I do understand that they try to keep it minimal but sometimes it just needs that extra bit of salt. Pricing is not bad for the items and it's pretty comparable to other places. Service is really great. The lady out front is always super nice. Location is in the Kalihi area next to the hawaiian chip company. I have been wanting to try food from Olena for quite a while now and I was so surprised that they were open on a Sunday!! Ordering online was easy and quick! I got online confirmation and a text message when my food was ready for pickup! I chose curbside pick up and Rose answered my call and was so sweet and pleasant! My halo halo craving was fulfilled and I loved that there were bits of Okinawa sweet potato in it! My family ate the brisket bowl and hamburger with truffle fries. Everything was delicious. I have been following Olena on Instagram during the pandemic and lockdown. A few weeks ago I finally tried their Prime Rib Thursday special. I ordered four meals, one for myself and the other three for my daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Rose who answered the phone and took my order was so nice and helpful. WOW! Wish I took a picture but we could not wait even for one bite. Thursday night is Prime Rib night, came with buttery mash, Popover au jus/gravy and some power-packed horseradish cream. Oh and a salad with wonderful dressing! My Breville smart oven did a reheat on our med-rare meat for 12 minutes at 350 and it just warmed it to oven temp with full pink intacted. The event was outdoors/indoors in August so you can imagine how hot it was! Olena's Calamansi drink really hit the spot. The calamansi fruit is kind of like a lemon, but much sweeter and milder. What I really liked was that Chef Ron caramelized fresh pineapple bits and added that to the Calmansi drink to give it a more tropical taste. The calamansi and the caramelized pineapple was the perfect pairing for a refreshing drink. Even though this drink isn't cheap, $5 for a small cup that was mostly ice, I would not hesitate to buy it again and again. Their pork belly adobo is very much melt in your mouth fatty, in the best possible way. I wasn't sure what the olena rice was but paid extra to try it was it was worth it. The phone was promptly answered & the lady was enthusiastic & friendly. When we arrived for pick up, we were greeted by 3 smiling counter employees. Food: 3* We were disappointed after the rave yelp reviews & instagram posts. Nothing was terrible & nothing was stellar hence the 3*. Prime rib: Includes a popover, mashed potatoes & green salad. I adore popovers & bake them myself. Popovers are best fresh out of the oven or they deflate & get soggy which describes the popover. The mashed potatoes were bland - needed butter. The prime rib was tender although over cooked (I requested rare & it was medium well) & under seasoned (this is unusual for me to say because I rarely add salt to my food & use a light hand while cooking). The green salad & dressing were good. Red wine beef stew: A regular beef stew which I normally don't order when dining out. The description alludes to Beef Bourguignon which it is not. It was ok. Both lunches were lukewarm. We only drove 10 mins to eat them at the tables at Costco because didn't want to eat in the car & didn't know of another nearby option. Chocolate chip cookie: On par with the Cookie Corner - good cookie although not memorable or crave worthy. Sampled the banana & mango breads which were fresh though too sweet for me. Parking: There were spaces available in the private lot probably because we arrived after peak lunch time. Might return to try the ribs & brisket - although not in a rush. We did walk across the street to check out Hawaiian Chip Company. read more
