Found this hidden gem while looking for something local to eat. First realize that all the good stuff IS NOT located in a tourist filled area. If you are curious enough to go look for experiences, you can find them- but get off the beaten path. This jewel is seriously in the middle of a warehouse district. Go find it. It will be worth your while. Loved it. Start with the Filipino lemonade (the tartest that I have ever had). Just when you think that first sip may pucker you mouth in, you get the little sweet burst of pineapple. This was awesome. I keep thinking about that lemonade. Ordered fish and chips, a dessert and a shave ice-milk boba drink. While waiting for the order, the lady recommended that I head over to the Chip factory outlet across the street. The chips were made to order with the flavors you like. Ordered the taro and sweet potato chips. The place was hopping. Cars kept coming and people kept walking away with hot bags of chips. They even have an airplane safe box for takeaway. Now back to pick up the food: ah. So interesting. The lady talked me though how to experience the boba, shave ice creation. On the top, it was purple ebi ice cream with little seeds on top. Tucked around the edges were generous bits of purple potatoes. I know it sounds different, but the flavor combos we're amazing. Mixed in at the bottom were tiny jewel colored bits of goodness. And of course, not to forget, the fish and chips were perfect strips of mahi in a tempura batter. The fish was fresh, hot and absolutely Devine. Did I say that it was served on a bed of hot chips? I asked for extra malt Vinegar and went back to the car to enjoy. All around me customers are were coming and going. Seems like this was a regular eatery for surrounding area. Parking is either local - on the street or on the front on their lot. Tons of traffic. I've been to Hawaiian Chip Company over a dozen times and somehow managed to not take notice of Olena, located right across the street. In fact, they share additional parking space with Hawaiian Chip Company. Olena used to be located at JABSOM but moved to this location over a year ago I believe. Their customer service is amazing, super friendly, feels like family. They have an up to date website that has their entire menu with detailed descriptions of the menu items which is good for someone like me who has a very restrictive medical diet. I order the vegetarian empanada and let me just tell you, one is Not Enough! It's so delicious, you'll be craving more. The food is fresh - you can take the difference! Filipino lemonade which consisted of calamansi and pineapple tidbit pieces at the bottom of the cup. That drink friends was so refreshing on a hot day. You step up to the counter where you're greeted by Rose(?) a super- friendly lady along with her 2 sons. In a few minutes they serve your your drink and have you step over to their condiment table for the large boba style straw. A well-rounded menu, albeit a bit sparse. Still, I'd rather have a solid menu of awesomeness than a big menu of mediocrity. Each dish they offer is thoughtfully done, from the sous vide chicken salad to the red wine beef stew to the beautiful sliders. And the idea that you can have any of the sliders as a rice bowl! Mind. Blown. These guys get a solid star for having their own parking lot in the middle of All That Crazy. You know what I mean. Just knowing they are on Republican Street is enough to put anyone off. But this establishment has easily 8 stalls that they share with Hawaiian Chip Company in a super clean lot that has lots of room to turn around - no creative driving required here! Their interior is really nothing to speak of. Nicely set up, very clean. You can see right into the prep area, which also looks squeaky clean. One refrigerator for drinks, another to display desserts and such, and one more for miscellaneous stuff. Absolutely no seating at all. So sad, but this is my 1 star that I feel like I just can't give up. I feel like they could have 1 or 2 small tables or a bar with some seating, but they just don't. Apart from the obvious, this is so important because the truffle fries just don't travel all that well. Mine had to sit in front of the car AC because I was so hot, so I ate them on the way back to the office. When I first took a bite they were A-MAZING. For real. But they got slightly less amazing with each mile, because they could not retain their heat. They do leave the boxes open when they first give them to you because it is SO much better than having soggy fries or a wet sandwich, but if you could just eat it there it would be amazing until you were done. Needless to say, I started eating in the parking lot. Hehe. I ordered one Adobo Oink and Moo slider and one Beef Brisket. These are served on taro rolls, so you kind of get the idea of size. That said, one slider probably would have been enough, especially given the fact that I got truffle fries too. The Beef Brisket comes topped with a lilikoi bbq sauce that is really to die for. Super flavorful. The brisket itself is moist and tender. For $5.50! The Adobo Oink and Moo was a completely different thing altogether. Braised pork belly adobo is stacked on a beef patty and is topped with just the right amount pickled red onion (I am SUCH a fan of pickled onion). For $5.95! Is this a deal or what? To me the pork belly didn't taste overwhelmingly of adobo, but the buttery taste of the fat and the overall texture of the belly is literally perfect. The beef patty, similarly, is done just right, not at all dry. One thing to note, the sandwiches usually come topped with coleslaw, but for travel they are packed separately. This really shows some thoughtfulness on the part of the chef to maintain the integrity of the dish and to enhance the experience for the consumer. I also ordered a Filipino lemonade - caramelized pineapple chunks and calamansi juice. They very thoughtfully provide a large straw similar to ones you get at a bubble tea place so your pineapple can really be part of the experience! So great! Next time I may try the cranberry refresher, but I am such a sucker for anything calamansi I can't promise anything! They advertise that they do some catering, which I will consider for the future just knowing how amazing this pork belly is. I spent over $20 at this place all by myself. I know. I stumbled on Olena by accident and it was the best accident ever! Wendy saw me reading through the menu and stopped and chatted with me. She was so passionate about the quality of the food and was very knowledgable about celiac and gluten-intolerance. While, I do not have celiac I am gluten-intolerant and adhere to a gluten-free diet. Eating out can be very tricky. But Olena offers many gluten-free options - an out-of-this-world beef stew, fall-off-the-bone lilikoi bbq ribs, tender-as-can-be brisket, and my MOST FAVORITE their gluten-free Almond Tarts - I routinely buy 6 at a time. Since my first visit, I have met Rose who is a dynamo and goes above and beyond for their customers. John, another Olena team member, is always bright and cheery. I went to check this place out when they first opened because I always get fresh taro chips across the street. The ladies that work there are the coolest. I can't say enough good things about this place. I got off the plane, drove here as my first stop, and I couldn't have made a better decision. It was such a good decision that over the course of 7 days I made it again...and again. Every menu item is great. Thank god Olena's was able to open back up again (Now at the Dole Cannery Food Court and with seating this time, too!). Olena's is a hidden gem among hidden gems in terms of food and atmosphere. Having tried everything on the menu (without exaggeration!), I can say that the fish dishes Uncle Ron makes are far and beyond anything I've ever tried on the island outside of high-tier, expensive sushi restaurants. The Blackened Ahi and the Mahi Mahi are extraordinary; if I had to choose a final meal while on death row, the Blackened Ahi would be it. Although the Ahi is a little pricey depending on market price, it is well worth it. Other standouts include the red wine beef stew, adobo pork belly bowls, and the chicken bahn mi (though you really can't go wrong here!). I used to get either beef stew or adobo pork belly weekly for lunch. Also, there are a few days/holidays which contain special, limited-time menu items so keep an eye out on their instagram as some of them sell out quick! read more

OMG, I just had the apple strudel at this place and it was just heavenly!!!! The lady who has helped me Rose, was super nice, I really enjoyed talking to her. Even the chef himself came out of the kitchen to say Hi. The place is super clean, it is easy to see that it is run by a true professional. Olena is the type of place that you find and then don't want to tell too many people about because it's so good! I ordered entrees from their website a couple of days in advance. The website is very easy to navigate and to place orders. After you place your order you'll receive an email giving you a number to call when you get to the restaurant. The restaurant is located in a warehouse area on Republican Street near the Hawaiian Chip Company. When I drove up to the restaurant the parking lot was full (maybe about 7 stalls) so I parked on the street. There was a line of people standing at the take out window ordering or waiting for their food. I called the restaurant from my car to let them know that I was parked on the street. The guy that answered the phone told me that he'd bring my order to my car. The guy was at my car in less than 3 minutes and thanked me for ordering food from Olena. I ordered the BBQ pork ribs with Lilikoi sauce, the prime beef brisket and the adobo pork belly, all with Olena's Jasmine rice and pineapple Cole slaw. The first thing you'll notice is the nice presentation (see photos) which enhances the foodie experience. The BBQ pork ribs were fall off the bone tender, the adobo pork belly tangy and tasty and the prime beef brisket also break apart tender and delicious. The Jasmine rice and pineapple Cole slaw paired well with the ribs, pork belly and the brisket. This was easily my favorite meal of 2020! I'm going to try the red wine beef stew and the Chef's halo halo dessert on my next visit. I can't believe that I didn't try this place sooner. What a great find in the last month of this crappy year. It's a good thing that the people at the Honolulu Chip Company mentioned it. I guess you can't keep good places a secret, the word eventually gets out and portions get smaller and prices go up. My favorite things on the menu: 1) Fish & Chips (sub truffle fries!) 2) Plantation Ice Tea 3) Banana Poi Bread The Fish & Chips are a great portion that doesn't leave me feeling like I'm gonna die. I'm not a big fish person, so I feel like it says something when I enjoy Fish & Chips. These crunchy, bite size pieces of fish are easy to eat and don't have a very fishy taste. If you're smart, you'll substitute the regular fries that come with the plate for truffle fries -- always tasty and flavorful! I also think it's hard to find the perfect Plantation Ice Tea, but here at Olena's, it's just the right blend of sweet pineapple juice and tea. Come early, or they may sell out! Olena's is run by Chef Ron and Rose. Rose really is the sweetest person -- I swear she knows every customer by name and makes everyone feel like they're part of the family. There's something to say about neighborhood eateries that not only make good food, but also embody that communal feeling. It's really nice to see. I ordered food twice from them during my vacation last week in Oahu and even swung by to order food from the Grab & Go for my plane ride home. I went there a few years ago on my last visit and Olena's food was delicious this time around as well. Their food is freshly prepared (made with healthy minds and hearts) and is not processed. I would highly recommend all their dishes including their grass fed burgers, soft and tasty beef stew, gluten free pork belly dishes, and soba noodle salad (so good and clean feeling to eat). You have to order their drinks (like their calamansi / pineapple lemonade, Thai coffee - all really refreshing) and poi deserts (brownie / banana and chocolate chip are irresistible) to top off your meals. Guys. Today is my dads birthday and thanks to me being a law-abiding citizen + the stay at home orders, I couldn't even wish him a happy birthday in person. What's the next best thing?
