I'm going to redo my review of this restaurant because there are new owners now. I previously rated this restaurant 4 stars, but under the new ownership this place deserves 5 stars! It's absolutely amazing! I've been coming in on a weekly basis now since I enjoy the food so much. The last owner I thought the food was very good, but I felt the entree portions were too small. Now that's not the case the entrees are all a generous portion and so are the appetizers. The dishes they have are so innovative and perfectly prepared. The fish specials change frequently and each dish is better than the next. My favorite appetizer is the octopus tostada it's outrageous! I order it week after week. Another top appetizer are the crab beignets, and also they make one of the best Hand cut steak fries that are perfectly seasoned. For desserts I like the banana pudding, chocolate peanut butter ice cream, and this blueberry dessert I had. Only one dessert I didn't care for it was some sort of mousse cake. Everything else has been delicious! I'm so impressed with everything under the new ownership, and I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. read more

Great service and great food! This place is on point with the oysters. They give you a list and let you know which oyster is from where. If you wanna try all, get the sampler oyster platter. You can take notes and revisit later if you wanna order more. Washington and Canada were our favorites flavorful little guys. It is a BYOB, so we brought a Don Julio Reposado tequila. Amazing when sipped and complements the oysters very nicely. We had the soft crab appetizer and Brie bites. Soft crab was soft yet crunchy thanks to the batter used. Brie bites reminded me of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a crunch and a very Brie ending. Very tasty indeed. Manager even came by and asked how our meal was. Delicious! So, I love the Toute. The food is good, the service is good, the owners are great, and everything just works. I've been wanting to go to 100 Steps for a while, so we decided to do it NYE. The owner Jim is a ridiculously hospitable person, you feel like you're family when you're there. My wife was 9 months pregnant at the time, and she could not get on the high stools, so they quickly moved us to a better spot, no complaints, no issues. 100 steps is a bit more romantic that Toute, it has a really cool wine bar feel to it, dark everything, comfy seats, nice music. ....As I was finishing up this review, I found out they sold this place, hopefully the new owners take this concept and run with it. read more

Outstanding Dining Experience What a find! We chose this restaurant for the Raw Bar and a recommendation by a friend. The food here is wonderful and the staff is helpful and friendly, which really make dining an experience. We were greeted at our table by one of the owners, who was kind enough to share the history of the restaurant and the chef. The food was all amazing. For starters we went with the Oyster Sampler and had two of each of the East and West coast varieties. We enjoyed the Chipotle Mignonette that was served with the oysters. The oysters were very fresh and worth the price! For dinner we chose several of the small plates. We really liked the Burrata. The Octopus a La Plancha was well prepared and was loaded with flavor, the Swordfish was seared to perfection, and the Skirt Steak served alongside the Mushrooms was a great combination. Everything was seasoned well and you could easily identify the spices (nothing was muddled) used by the chef. Our waitress was helpful in choosing dishes and had actually eaten the food. We had a great night and we would recommend this restaurant to everybody. This is a BYO establishment, which we were aware of in advance. We came prepared...but next time I would bring two bottles of wine. You really could just sit and try everything here. We'll be back.... read more

Sophisticated, mature menu for the foodie - welcoming enough to bring in a case of All Day IPAs and slam some raw seafood. This is the type of joint that I go right up to the raw bar and would probably never consider actually getting a table. Oyster selection is some of the best you'll get in the area. Let me tell you about these damn steam pots though - absolutely intoxicating smell. Very few things better to me than slamming some IPAs with a buddy, slurping some Oysters at a raw bar, and going to town on a Chorizo mussel steam pot. Could have spent our money somewhere better. There weren't enough dishes on the menu that were uncomplicated with odd miss matched ingredients trying to hard to be hip. Every dish was just mehh. Amazing place! Had such a great dinner with my boyfriend one night here that we know this is now on rotation as a place to visit very other month. We came around 7 on a Saturday and we're told there weren't any tables but the raw bar was open. No problem! That's were the action is anyways! Sat at the bar and couldn't help but realize it was really really hot in this restaurant! Not sure if it was the open kitchen concept or that no windows were opened. It did eventually cool down but jeez, so hot!! From the raw bar we got a double sampler so we tried each oyster they had. Delicious! Fresh and cold - no complaints! We also tried the octopus tostada which was light and full of flavor - tostada with a lime creme sauce, charred octopus (cooked perfectly!) and some red cabbage. It only comes with one tostada but it's okay to split for two people. I went with the catch of the day which was an orange roughy fish which was cooked to perfection and topped with walnuts and on a bed of Brussels sprouts, some blood oranges, a carrot purée and a few drops of yogurt. Such an amazing meal! I am so glad to have had this - I highly recommend getting the catch of the day, whatever it is that day! My boyfriend went with the mussels in a Thai curry sauce which was super flavorful and it must have been a whole pound of mussels! We went for dessert too; lemon pie for me and a coffee ice cream with espresso for him. All in all I highly recommend coming here! Might be a little expensive but for a special night out this hits all the marks! We went back for my husband's 36th birthday and a date night within a month. Kara is back and I'm so glad! It's now our go to date night place! My favorite thing to do is to leave work early and hit up the oyster happy hour. Never a shell or a crab in an oyster! Their tagliatelle was phenomenal and the scallops were the most perfectly cooked I've ever had. The happy hour on a Wednesday was empty so we got their A++ service! Staff is pleasant, location is great, only thing that is taking stars away is the fact that they r way overpriced on most of the menu items, a dinner for two ( some oysters, 2 apps or salads, and 2 entrees) shouldn't cost $200, when u r bringing ur own alcohol, the money wouldn't b an issue if the positions weren't so small, like really small, love the food but there just isn't enough for the price. read more

Used to love going here before they changed to a new owner. Went here for dinner with bf's family and I would say the food selection is not as exciting or adventurous like it used to be. We had the fresh oysters and clams which was very good and fresh. The appetizers we got was good such as the cauliflower soup, pasta with lobster, ricotta gnocchi, and kale salad. The entrees fell short, we had the catch of the day, OHS pot, hanger steak, arctic char, and local mushrooms. I think they can improve their entree selection better. Beware! Check Credit Card Statements!! I Visited the restaurant on Saturday 10/26/19 with two other people for a late dinner. Normally I would review the food and atmosphere but need to comment on their service and business practices this time. The total bill for our food was $110. I gave the waiter $40 in cash and the remaining $70 was split between the other two in the party; $35 each. A $20 tip was left on one credit card for a total of $55, and the remaining card was left unchanged at $35. A group text today revealed the staff decided a $20 tip wasn't enough and charged BOTH credit cards a $20 tip. Sad to see this happen here. Been to the restaurant plenty of times previously but this will be the last. I never forget shady business practices. The restaurant was notified, but no return call yet. Charge was disputed with the cc company. I will update the review if there is an appropriate resolution from 100 Steps. Update: A credit is being issued for the $20 read more

I am the pregnant lady Anthony V is referring to in reviews below. As he stated, food is always good and the waiters are always exceptional. However, I was asked to sit at a high top, I stated that I could not. I am 3 weeks from my due date and 5'1 in height. I would need a hoist to get into that chair. When asked if I could sit in the high top I told them it would swell my ankles. The hostess spoke to the manager. The manager came over and said that was the only table they could give me ( I had a reservation ) So, I said I guess I have to leave and he said yes. I walk out. See one friend I was meeting, then the other two friends. We are discussing outside where we should go now because they ( manager) will not accommodate the pregnant one. That is when the waiting staff over hears and says they can give us a low table if we want. I say yes because one friend came from NYC, the other Staten Island and an other from Bergen county. I don't want us trying to find a place to eat at the last minute in spite. When the manager went to make his "rounds" he skipped our table, initially. Anyone, that frequents 100 steps, know he circulates, asking how everything is. Eventually, he stopped at our table and did not ask how everything is, instead he simply stated behind a gritted smile " is this table low enough" Needles to say, my husband and I frequented this spot for two years, as we live in Cranford. We have bought many friends and family members here as well but we will never, again. This is not because the food is bad or waiting service is bad but to be turned away because I could not physically sit at a high top when I had a reservation, is upsetting. Moving forward, there are many fine local restaurants in Cranford with great food and service, that we will gladly support and bring our business to but never again at 100 steps with the current management. read more

I usually don't write reviews as my GF will comment on places that we've been to however she was out of the country tonight and I had the opportunity to dine here tonight with a friend. Total disappointment would be an understatement. The only reason I gave two stars is because the quality of the bay scallop dish was very good. First, the waiter kept forgetting items that I requested from the beginning of the meal right to my coffee at the end when I requested milk. Second, there was an extremely loud group of people behind us in a rather cramped space. The couple next to us even commented that they couldn't hear each other over the noise. Management did nothing to quiet the table down. Third, the portions were very small for the price charged. Finally the restrooms had paper towels on the floor, one toilet did s not work and the sink top had water all over it, no one was keeping tabs on the restrooms. There are so many better choices out there for the money. This is a wanna be higher end restaurant but will remain sub par unless lessons aren't learned. read more

We are regulars to A Toute Heure and enjoy the food and atmosphere but did not enjoy this second restaurant by the same owners. We had a group of 8 get together for a nice Friday evening out and nobody at the table really enjoyed the food. I'd give this a 1.5 star if I could. My wife and I arrived early for our 8pm reservations at 7:30. We were greeted by friendly staff and seated promptly at our waiting table. However, that is where the service ended. The rest of our party arrived by 8PM and not once in that 30 minutes did anyone ask us if we wanted our bottle of wine opened, a glass of water or bread, etc.. Thank goodness we ran into friends and we had good conversation because the service at that point was terrible! After the rest of the party arrived, we were all wondering how the menu worked. When the waiter finally got around to explaining it, he was not very confident in his explanation which left us all trying to figure out what to order. We basically ordered one of everything off the entire menu between the 8 of us (2 entrees each, an appetizer for each couple and Oysters). You had to order 2 entrees each because the plates were EXTREMELY small and did not fill you up at all. The 2 entrees in my opinion were not even enough and the price for the two was already too expensive. The food took forever to arrive and while we all enjoy a nice evening together and usually linger quite a while drinking and eating, it literally took 2.5-3 hours of us being there to receive our meals. The appetizers were very good and so were the Oysters but the main courses were just not good, too expensive and not filling. For a BYOB place, the bill should be pretty reasonable but it was way too expensive for what you received. My wife and I are not afraid to frequent expensive restaurants but expect much better service and much better food. We wound up eating a ton of bread during the evening due to the slow service and lack of food. If I were to improve this restaurant I would start with the service and then the food. If you are going to serve small plates of food then the prices should reflect that, instead they charge more for ONE small plate of food than a normal size entree at a comparable restaurant and you have to order two small plates to even be remotely satisfied. The only positives I can say I enjoyed was the cheese board, the Oysters and The Lamb entree. We enjoy A Toute Heure and will continue to visit that restaurant but will definitely not be returning here unless a lot of changes are made. read more

This is one of the best dinners we have had in the food challenged Garden State in a while. If I could it 6 stars I would, and they are not even officially open yet! All charcuterie and bread made in house. Decor very nice space. Service very competent. We tried: Lamb rib chop.........ah-mazing! So impressed. Great ambiance and definitely come between 4-5:30 for the happy hour half price oysters. We had 42 oysters and steak fries. They were fresh and perfectly shucked. Service was fabulous. I joined friends who are into oysters. They did enjoy what they had but did say they thought oysters were overpriced. They have tapas so we ordered a few things to share. Everything was good but portions were small and pricey. This like their sister restaurant across the street is very popular so make reservations well in advance. It is very loud inside too. Great food and amazing service. Love the involvement and interaction the owner has with the guests. He truly makes you feel like family. Apps: My date had the east coast oyster sampler, he was very satisfied. We shared the butternut squash and ricotta toast. Lovely balance of flavors and texture, one was enough to share. Baked oysters were also very good, but you only get four, so keep that in mind if you think someone may want to taste. Mains: The OHS mussel pot was excellent! Great flavor. I don't like cilantro, but you can't taste it at all in the dish, which was great for me. The Mushroom pasta is definitely a hearty choice. This place strives to be something it is not. It thinks it is trendy, but is in what is basically a strip mall on a Cranford street. It thinks it is imaginative. It thinks it merits the prices it charges for decent but not terrific food. I was disappointed. Three of us shared meatballs, a house salad, sautéed shrimp, salmon ceviche, a pasta special and grilled octopus. The meatballs were good, as was the sauce. Same for the shrimp. The octopus was really dry and flavorless. The salad was bland. The ceviche, while fresh, lacked any sort of punch. The pasta tasted cheesy but lacked any other real depth of flavor. The Parker house rolls that came with al of this were really good, properly salty and buttery. Service was friendly. Prices are high considering the middling quality of the food. I loved this place! Cranford has nothing else similar to this raw bar/fresh seafood concept. It's a delicious alternative to the typical restaurants in the area. While it is quite expensive (especially for the suburbs), 100 Steps is a great place to splurge on a nice dinner. In lieu of ordering several of the small plates, we decided to share the large $100 raw bar tower. I think this was a wise decision as it allowed us to sample 6 different types of oysters, clams, lobster, crab claws, and shrimp. All was delicious. A nice added touch was that the manager (owner?) personally stopped by our table to make sure we were enjoying our meal. 100 Steps is a great date-night location and some of the best fresh seafood you'll find in North Jersey. read more

Didn't think we could get this good of a meal in NJ, but the Carbines have found the formula for great food, atmosphere and service in Cranford. 100 Steps is roomy, modern, hip and delicious. We started with East Coast and West Coast oysters--described in size and taste accurately by Philipe our waiter. He also suggested we order 2 plates each for our main course so we can share--I'm was skeptical but he was spot on. The rabbit ragout with some kind of ravioli was off the charts delicious, The fried artichokes were a big hit too. My friend has the pounded lamb steak and he wouldn't shut up about how good it was--not the norm for him. My wife's charred octopus dish disappeared before we had a chance to get a taste. Great coffee and desserts rounded out the evening. Congrats to the owners--other restaurants could take a page out of this winning formula. read more

Food: Mostly awesome. I asked my server to bring me his favorite app out of a couple of selections I provided him. He brought me the gnocchi which came topped with burrata and in a marinara type sauce. It was absolutely terrific. The gnocchi specifically were on a different planet. My wife had the tomato salad to start. Very fresh and tasty. I'd get both again. My entree was the mussel pot which came in a tomato based broth. Very good, but I prefer the ATH pot across the street...it's got a nice spice to it which I enjoy. My wife had the short rib which was cooked perfectly. Served over some type of corn purée which I thought was delicious, but it was a little sweet for my wife. Dessert was the s'mores. I'm glad we got it, but the ice cream that came with it was not our favorite. They served it with a smoked vanilla which kind of tasted like bacon. Next time, I'd ask them to just give us some regular vanilla. Nonetheless, awesome meal! Service: On point. Our server was polite, attentive, and knew the menu very well. The owner also came around to check on us which was nice of him. Couldn't ask for much more here. Atmosphere: Clean, romantic, welcoming, we were there on a Wednesday (for our anniversary) and there was live music which was actually really nice. It was soft, not loud and annoying. Very impressed with this place. Who would think Cranford, NJ could showcase such culinary craft. Let's start with the atmosphere. The decor is reminiscent of a 20 something girl's first apartment, but you know what, it works. Down to the wooden crates they use to mark tables in between courses, I guess the word I'd use to describe it is: quaint. Raw bar: very fresh and expertly shucked. A great variety of both east and west coast oysters. The littlenecks were plump and delicious. I'd like to try the ceviche next time. Homemade cocktail sauce was balanced, not overwhelmingly sweet or horseradishy, really brings out the flavor of the raw bar. Some notes on the food, the crostini was great, needed a saltier component but was good. Seasonal veg was asparagus, I could have done without it but I ordered it for my mom. The frito misto was calamari on steroids, the sauce on it was great. Skip the octopus, I was a little disappointed. It was cooked very well but I wasn't a fan of the beans and BBQ sauce. The meatballs were okay. Growing up Italian, I always try meatballs when I go out, but nothing comes close to my family's recipe. The star of the show? The shrimp. Oh my god, get the shrimp. Dip the bread in it. You won't be disappointed. Dessert? Sticky toffee pudding cake. Yup. Service was great, Katie was friendly and attentive. Cranford has no shortage of restaurants, that's for sure. And sadly, not all of them should still be open. But 100 Steps is a place that I hope stays open for a long time! An oyster bar? Yes please! We tried this cool little tapas/BYOB on a whim and were completely happy with our experience. It's a small place but they can pack the house without it feeling overcrowded. Our oyster knowledge has always been limited to wedding cocktail hours so when we asked questions, the staff was very knowledgeable. We ordered the mixed dozen of oysters because we wanted to try them all. They were very fresh and so tasty. The shigoku oyster was our favorite. We paired the oysters with one of their cheese boards. It was just so good. In addition to that, we also ordered the fried baby artichokes as well as the cockles, smoked bacon in bonito broth with salt cod croquettes (it was a little salty but still good). For dessert we tried the chocolate truffles and the salted caramel budino. Both tasty, but nothing overwhelming. I usually find myself more interested in the food than the desserts anyway. Overall, everything was incredibly delicious. You will end up paying a bit more than your typical night out but this place is worth the indulgence. One little thing that was a little bothersome was that our waitress brought us our check before we asked for it. It's a pet peeve of mine no matter where we go, especially when customers are still finishing their dessert, wine, etc. It's not like it brought down our experience but just stood out to me. I'm sorry but Cranford, NJ is not the Upper East Side. But apparently, 100 Steps thinks it is. My husband and I went yesterday for brunch based on the reviews. While the setting was lovely, it is so over-priced for the quality and quantity that, frankly, I don't know how they stay in business. While the service was conscientious, I had to ask three times for a pepper grinder - the first two times, the grinder was empty and the server didn't bother to check. Now as to the food. We ordered a half dozen clams on the half shell to share. While they were tasty and fresh, they were each the size of a quarter and the charge for 6? $2 each. Then I ordered the fried oyster Benedict. The oysters over so overdone, all you could taste was the crunch. And for $24 at brunch, I expect more than just two soggy English muffins with overdone oysters and a sprig of parsley plunked down on a white plate. My husband had the chicken and waffles. Over-friend chicken strips with two half-waffles for $20. There are so many nice places for brunch in Northern NJ, particularly in our hometown of Montclair, I can't see ever trying 100 Steps in the future. read more

After dining at OHS' sister restaurant, A Tout Heure, numerous times, my wife and I were finally able to try OHS tonight. It was delicious! A totally different vibe than ATH. Much more casual and laid back. The clams on the half shell were so fresh that you could taste the ocean's brine - delic! We also split two pasta dishes which were very good too. Our server, Fabiola, could not have been nicer and more attentive. I'll admit after reading a lot of the reviews on Yelp, I was a little nervous about the service. However, we had some of the best service ever tonight. If I had anything constructive to say about the restaurant it would be this - I thought the dessert, for what it was (a chocolate torte, on the smallish side), was overpriced at $10 (funny enough though, I thought the prices for everything else were just fine). The decaf coffee I was served was also very burnt. Oh well. Certainly didn't ruin the evening. All in all, OHS certainly lived up to, and exceeded, our expectations. 100 Steps was great! My wife and I have been to ATH and LOVED it, so we were excited to try 100 Steps. We went for our anniversary dinner last night and it was very good. We had a couple oysters and the scallop ceviche, everything was so fresh. The scallops were "bangin". They had a long list of oysters from both east and west coast, be sure to ask for their homemade hot sauce. We also had the grilled octopus and sun chokes. The octopus was perfectly charred. For our entrees my wife and the potato gnocchi and I had the braised rabbit. We shared the dishes and we both really enjoyed everything. The atmosphere was awesome, so clean and beautifully lit at all times of the day. I love the raw bar set up, it makes me want to go back to just have a couple freshly shucked oysters The service was really good, the owner came by to say hello and run through the menu with us. We met him last time and he is very personable and welcoming. I don't know if it was us or not but the hostess wasn't very friendly and didn't really make the entrance to the restaurant very comfortable. The hostess did open our wine right away and poured our glasses for us. Maybe she was just too busy that night. Going here is always a great idea. For my husband and I it is a little bit of a splurge as we always want oysters, plus an appetizer. The oysters are always delightful and fresh, and the descriptions are spot on. We like to get a sampler and they give us a pencil to take notes, which is cute. Waitstaff is extremely attentive. Husband got the scallops and was blown away by the coconut leek purée that came with it. I got the mussels pot. The broth was so flavorful and they gave us freshly grilled sourdough to dip. The attention to detail at this place is what makes it special for us, from the pencil with our oysters to the two tiny, fresh lemon cookies that come with the check. Sometimes life has its special moments, and why shouldn't you spend it in a special place? I've done it many times and many different ways at this little town favorite. My favorite is to start my time at 5pm. Yes its punctual and early, but for happy hour oysters why not, the early bird catches the finest oysters at an amazing price! Roll it over to 5:30 and the dinner menu begins. Several plates later, tons of wonderful food in my belly, life is so satisfying. But the best moment and memory is seeing my mom have her first luxury meal in her life. She felt special dining in this beautiful decor, enjoying all the foods. Have to agree with Jennifer about the mussel pot , had it last night. Disappointed. Went with 5 people , no one was thrilled with their dinner .
