I've been going to Tequila for six years now. As a landscaper I eat here typically 2-3 times a week. This place was once a thriving gold mine. It seems all the gold is gone, and the mine is now dry. That's how I feel about Tequila. About two years ago they renovated, added a larger food case, and the owners changed hands. Now nearly two years later the food has become depressingly bad. For starters the recipe's have changed or have been altered to reduce cost which is odd considering the food is more expensive than ever. Two years ago an empanada was $1. A year ago it was $1.25, and now it's $1.50. That would be fine if it was the same empanada they made two years ago, but the recipe has changed, no more cheese oozing out with flavor, no more golden flaky crust and tender chicken or beef. Just dried up fillings in a fried coating that just tastes old. Papusas... burnt, stale, how long have they been sitting there? The previous owner would never allow this, and all the people who used to work there four years ago are seemingly gone. I'm not going to say it's all bad, but they definitely don't take pride in their food anymore. I used to get breakfast here, and they'd be ready at 7:30 with a bunch of fresh cooked food. Nowadays it's empty inside or yesterdays leftovers. No chorizo? Albondigas? Stuffed poblano? I can go on and on, but I hate kicking someone when they're down. Every damn time I come to this place I am never disappointed. I have dreams of their food. The place and people are always a joy to visit. I highly recommended everything. I can't tell you how much I love this place. My only issue with them is they aren't closer to me. Even if you don't like Spanish food, the Cuban sandwich is only $8 and can feed 2 people. Called before going. Asked what time they close girl says twelve. Show up at around 9:45pm with wife and daughter see two girls with shocked look on faces....they are closed. Walked in talked to Francis owner. Told him I called what was told to me. He made it sound like it was a language barrier. Girl on phone understood what I asked don't play me for a fool. Never had problems like this with previous owner Juan. I guess I'll take my appetite and $$$ where they understand me. Their faces spoke a thousand words where any language would understand. The food is just okay. The thing that I don't like about the place is the price fluctuates depending who I come with. It is very strange and goes up and down getting the same thing so it's not because I'm getting something different. When I come with my boyfriend for instance who had never been here till I brought him, the food came out cheaper. Anyway I don't like places that do that. A gem of Puerto Rican, Central American Cuisine. It's a store front with some tables. Hot items to go or eat in. Food is delicious. The Tequila Sandwich(A jazzed up Cubano) is amazing. I was so excited to find a place out here that had pupusas!!! Maybe I am spoiled by the home made pupusas that my El Salvadorean students bring me, but they were much fatter than I am used to, and the taste was a little off. Just mind-blowing. The best puerto Rican food on the island bar none. It might not look like anything on the outside but on the inside where it counts this place is a thing of beauty. The food is out of this world and the proportions are gigantic. Seriously I almost feel like i'm stealing from them everytime I buy their food like i owe them more. The taco salad, and cuban are some of the highlights for me. Service is fantastic and friendly. When I go with a group of 4-6 people to sit down there we are given usually a free appetizer when we sit down before out food gets there. We never asked for anything they just give it to us. Sometimes it's tortilla chips and dip and sometimes it's empanada's. Don't judge a book by the cover this place is magical some of the best quality food on the island and it's in a little hole in the wall. go and try for yourself you will leave a very happy person I promise. Note: you might wanna split a meal with a friend like the Taco salad cause the thing is monterously large and practically impossible for 1 person to finish. This is the place for a great Cubano sandwich, rice and beans are spot on. The Tequila special sandwich is hot but very tasty, you just cant put it down once you start. Ohhh I love this place, I mean the people that works there and the owner all very nice. There food is excellent, I love there specials. I like the pupusa they make with pork and cheese and serve with a tangy and spicy cabbage salad. I like there pork and rice, rotisserie chicken and rice and many more. This place is a hidden gem. Every single dish I've ordered is absolutely delicious. I know I can try something new each time I come back and it will be amazing. The pernil (roasted pork) and pollo guisado ( chicken stew) are some of my favorites. For side orders, the rice and beans are a must and so are the sweet plantains. Not to mention the empanadas are large in size and have a ton of meat in them. I liked the beef ones the best, kinda spicy. Super friendly staff and very generous portions. A+ read more

Came here a few times already and had lunch to go last week but I've only gotten the home-cooked buffet food and empanadas. I've tried at least half the items on their buffet and everything has been excellent (except for 1 that's wrapped in banana leaf that I wasn't feeling tastewise). Try the fried chicharones. The portions are big but be careful because the prices don't seem to be consistent and I don't think I've seen them listed anywhere. I've been charged $5.99, $7.99, and I believe $9.99 once (when I decided to try 3-4 things) but they've all been the same portions so I'm not really sure how that works...maybe I'll ask how much next time before ordering. The chicken empanadas are very tasty (a little bit greasy) and a buck each cheap so I've brought home a few for the fridge on multiple occasions. The beef empanadas are so-so, good for a try. The guy behind the counter is nice and will spark up a conversation every now and then if not busy. There's a few seats inside and it hasn't been crowded when I've gone during lunch and late dinner but this has the feel of a bodega with snacks, drinks, etc. all around you. Tastes like Puerto Rico. We were in PR over the summer and left there dreaming about the amazing food to be had in their famous kiosks. During a chance discussion with a stranger recently, I complained about missing the food and she recommended this place. I never would have found it otherwise and I'm SO glad I did! I have frequented this spot for many years, but only now have i decided to give it a review. For some time now I have noticed that the food quality has decreased, portion sizes have shrunk and prices seem to rise every few months. I got an order 2 months ago and was shocked that the prices had increased significantly, around 30%, compared to the menu I kept in the house. I just got back today from picking up food and realized that the prices shot up again as I looked at the "new menu". "New" as in the same menu but every price shot up. The food is ok and was always convenient, but now they have priced themselves right out of my market. It's a Latin deli, not sit down restaurant. $4 for a papusa, $10 for a Hungryman, $3 for a tamale, $11 for a Cuban sandwich. read more

The best Spanish food on Long Island! I've never had a mid-step at this restaurant. Every item on the menu has a home cooking taste to it. Large portions at a reasonable prices. I really like this place but the last time I went in there seemed to be new people working there that were not as friendly. Idk if it's new management or just who was on that shift but service should always be a priority. That being said, the food is always good and it's so convenient. Found this place through yelp when my son was playing soccer at diamonds in the pines fields....I used to hate going all the way there for games, but now we make it an excursion! The food was sooooo good. My son got the cuban sandwich (we highly recommend it). he is 16 and ate halt before his game, half after and was FULL!!! That is a statement, right there, yes it is huge! He is so active that he can eat a house, but this did the trick and he LOVED it, I took a bite and, oh my gosh, it was so good!! Then we went back another time and had the buffet...I am sure I dont want to know the calories, but the pork was off the charts..tender, tasty, can't make it at home for the price or quality,...so good. This is really a hidden gem. I wish I lived closer because I would take out instead of cooking a lot more often. However, this is a bodega, not a restaurant, so buyer beware. Not everyone can deal with that scene no matter how good the food is. We happen to love the quality and experience of authentic cuisine, the one that hasn't been hyped up and supercharged to meet the "american" standard. Yes we are americans, like these folks, but have no cross cultural reference and, therefore, love culture through food and people and love that people like this, who do have a cross cultural reference are really opening their homes and hearts to us through their cooking . If you like that too, try it and I am sure you will love it, if not stick to the chain restaurants. As far as price difference, I have found that the more warm and friendly and comfortable you make people feel the better for everyone.
