While many people are getting savory breakfast/lunch items here, the baked goods should not be ignored. Many of them are very rich and/or very large, so could be a centerpiece of a meal itself. I was especially blown away by the 1886 Chocolate Cake. 1886 Chocolate Cake: Pure chocolate indulgence! A moist devil's food cake in the center, encased in gooey chocolate sauce-like frosting then studded with crunchy little chocolate balls. So much texture contrast. So much chocolate. It's obviously very rich, so take your time enjoying each bite. Cinnamon Roll: HUGE! That's really how you have to describe this. And a very generous amount of sweet cream cheese frosting on top. The dough seemed more croissant-like than gooey cinnamon roll. Which works well paired with coffee, but could upset cinnamon roll purists. Pumpkin Coffee Cake: Feels like something you'd get at Starbucks this time of year, but higher quality. The drizzled frosting on top helps give a sugar boost to the spiced cake base. Also another great pairing with coffee. Confetti Popcorn: Looks so colorful and fun. Coated in a candy shell that makes it taste like Franken Berry. A little funky, but in a good way. read more

Swung by this place one morning for breakfast one morning. I heard it was pretty good, so I wanted to check it out on my last full day of my Austin trip. No reservations or anything like that. You just walk up to the counter, place your order, take a number, and find a seat. There were plenty of seats available on an early Saturday morning. I couldn't not order the Chicken + Waffles (texas shaped waffle, fried chicken, sunny-side up egg, yellowbird jalapeño hot sauce). Loved the cliche Texas-shaped waffle, and it was cooked very well. Crispy on the outside, fluffy and chewy on the inside. The fried chicken was a liiittle over, but the flavor in the breading was good. The gooiness of the egg and the hot sauce all added up to a good little meal. I also got my hands on the Paris Texas Benedict (two poached eggs, brie cheese, ham, croissant, hollandaise sauce, country potatoes). An eggs benny with the deep deep flavor of brie was just what I needed. So much unctuousness. Be warned, there's no relief here. It's Just indulgent. I didn't mind. And the country potatoes were made of three different potatoes, normal, purple, and sweet. That was a unique touch that really made this dish worth the order. Overall, I was a fan. I like the vibe and decorations but its not even 25 mins I sat there, my daughter was still eating and I was about to order more food the waitress put the bill on my table and the restaurant was not even busy and I looked around I see only one table was given bill which was an Indian guy. This is a place you come for the vibe for sure. It's a little pricey for what is served but there is just a bit of an upscale flair on everything on the menu, as well as a Texas flare. The servers at the register and the table were very nice and helpful, no complaints there! The interior of the cafe is attached to the Driskill hotel itself which is old and beautiful. The food reflects that upscale Texas charm - I had the pecan/berry Texas waffle which is fluffy and delicious, with a sweet cream and fluffy butter they serve it with. My mom had eggs hollandaise which was also very good. We had Bellinis which were a bit strong but that's not a bad thing! She also got an almond croissant which was delicious. The plating is lovely! The bill came out to about $80 for two people with all this so it's nice crazy expensive but it's a lot more than a cheaper brunch you could get in a less upscale space. Nonetheless, I wanted to try it and I'm glad I came! Parking is a hassle, I actually parked on the other side of the bridge for free and had to walk all the way to the hotel (about 7-8 blocks) so that was a bit much. They validate for some unknown amount in a nearby garage but just know it can be a bit of a hassle/cost to park. I don't personally plan to come back because of these factors, but I'm certainly glad I tried it and would rec trying it to any brunch/nice cafe lover! read more

Situated within the beautiful Driscoll hotel in downtown Austin, this cafe has all the charm you could hope for in a place that started out in the 1800s. The breakfast menu has a really delicious and decent selection ranging from your classic eggs Benedict to egg white omelettes. I highly recommend the avocado on toast with poached eggs and the egg white omelette stuffed with fresh garden vegetables and feta cheese. First off this building is beautiful. We chose to sit outside it was a nice morning. Staff was very nice. Coffee was wonderful white chocolate lavender latte. Food was very good. I loved the informal seating because it didn't look like it would be that way because of how fancy it looks. Never felt rushed and it was relaxing. Quite modern on the inside and historic looking from the outside. I ordered the orange juice and asked if it was fresh. They said not onsite, but yes. It felt store bought unfortunately. The Texas shape waffle was really nice. Mildly warm and soft on the inside, light crisp on the outside. Just how I like it. Nice fresh fruit and maple syrup pair. The bacon was phenomenal. I also enjoyed the egg and toast. I liked how the side potatoes were colorful and not homogeneous. Overall, I'd quickly go back and recommend to friends. Just not the orange juice. This place is about as you expect it. Food looked great and was good. Long line to order and not too bad of a wait for food especially after how busy it is. It is kinda cool to see the chefs create works of art and dishing the items out quickly and perfectly while waiting in line to order. Now when you find a seat and get your food you have the entire line watching you eat while they wait. Feels a bit cramped but that's kind of how it goes at such a popular place. This is the type of restaurant where you order and pay at the register. The line can be long from time-to-time, but they have their system down; the line moves fast. This was my absolute favorite breakfast in my trip to Austin. It is a order and sit down type of place. Luckily, we barely had to wait in line. We were also happy that they still serve breakfast food past 11. We went to Caroline at 10:45 and left dissapointed because they stopped serving breakfast. We were so happy that not many doors down we could get breakfast here. We ordered a Hippie Hollow and Croque Madame, both were absolutely delicious. Portions were great. We both loved the fingerling potatoes. A lot of places can't do these potatoes right!!!! They're either undercooked or cold. These were hot and delicious. I highly recommend both these especially the Hippie Hollow if you're a fan of goat cheese! The food presentation is aesthetic AF, see pics. They have an option for every taste bud. We ate here several times over the previous weekend as we stayed at the Driskoll hotel. They had a brunch from 8 or 9 until 2 most days. We got breakfast mostly but it was very good. Between Shana and myself we tried different kinds of eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, toast, coffee, apple juice and their bar. Everything was very good, the bacon was the highlight for me. No one was taking cash of course but you could tip in cash in a cup. You could eat there but in limiting our exposure to others we always took it to go. The staff is super nice and after just two visits could remember my wife and her drink order(coffee) the way she wanted. My go-to spot whenever I am in Austin, especially during winter when you can dine in the Driskill portion and sit next to the giant Christmas tree. Looks and smells like Christmas. We did the Afternoon Tea service, which I heard a lot about. The room was nicely decorated. The hostess greeted us with a glass of prosecco, which is refilled throughout the service. Food was mediocre. Scones were dry. The bread for the tea sandwiches were extremely dry. The macaroons were good. The cake and match cookies tasted weird. My husband and I only had a bite of each of them. Service was average. The staff was slow to refill our tea cup. We didn't receive our 3rd tea and had to flag a waitress to request it. We wanted to eat in this historic hotel for Sunday brunch. It took 40 minutes in line before we could order, but our food arrived quickly. We chose a table outside on the patio and there were plenty of empty tables. The place had one of the best chocolate croissants I have ever had. I love that they use real utensils, not plastics and fabric napkins. I wish the tea came in a china or mug. They definitely get stars for being opened this early in the morning. And of course, they get stars for having some of the coolest ambiance on the block. The décor is pleasant. It's a nice open space with really tall ceilings and arched windows complimented with copper bar and ceiling as well as pillars. And apparently, they don't skimp on the size of their pastries. As you can see from my photos , the cinnamon bun and croissant are large and in charge! The menu is extensive and filled with all the things you really want to eat, and it had a wide selection of fruits, pastries, and traditional breakfasts , as well as lighter fares like yogurt and granola. There's a nice sounding pleasant music coming through the speakers. But I admit it's a tiny bit loud early in the morning, and it's echoing through the mostly vacant dining room. It appears to be mostly self-serve in some sense. They do bring your food out to your table when it's ready, though. They are losing a star for the barista spilling coconut milk all over my shirt sleeve and having a very nonchalant attitude about it. They're also losing a star because in my husband's fruitbowl, the strawberries had some kind of strange looking center that they didn't cut out and was very apparent. In addition to that, his bacon was pretty overdone, borderline burnt, And the hollandaise on my eggs benedict was underwhelming for me in both flavor and quantity, Although I'm not sure I would have wanted more of something that was less flavorful, so it's kind of a catch twenty-two there. Also, the brie was seemingly skipped on as well, which is what I was looking for in particular with this benny. I was very happy that the potatoes on my plate were not just plain potatoes but purple Okinawan potatoes and orange sweet potatoes as well. I'm giving three stars because even though overall, this place is pretty epic and the decor is great, and it looks like it has everything you want, they kind of drop the ball on just a few little details that would have made the experience a much better. read more

My search for the Austin area's best (/world's best??) cinnamon roll is officially complete. Imagine the softest, fluffiest, butteriest croissant that you've ever tasted, then increase its size 3x, then put cinnamon butter in between each of those zillion folds, then put a vanilla bean butter sauce on top.....and you'll have the cinnamon roll from 1886 Cafe in the Driskill. It is a gift from the gods. It has changed my life and I'll never be the same. I encourage you all to go partake as soon as humanly possible. PS if you're thinking it doesn't look like there's cinnamon, there definitely is. It's just made with cinnamon butter throughout instead of blobs of cinnamon goo. Been to the Driskill bar many times but never actually eaten here, but finally had the opportunity so we stopped in for a late breakfast/brunchish. Aside from egg options or salad, they don't really have any savory gluten free options (it's mostly sandwiches) so finding something enticing was a bit difficult. I ended up going with a burger and just getting double fries instead of a bun ($16), and I asked for medium rare; I've definitely had better burgers for cheaper, it was overcooked and just didn't have much flavor to it. The fries were good enough, service was good and quick, and it's a really nice place; bit of a shame on the food though. It can be tough to find breakfast spots in ATX so while looking for something close by, the menu looked appealing at 1886. For this to be located in the historic Driskill Hotel, I expected top notch service, so I was a little taken aback by the sign that greeted us upon entry. You are to scan to QR code, order your food at the counter with the barista and then seat yourself. Completely was expecting something a bit more upscale. We were also a little put out by the barista/cashier with her short, snippy replies when asked her opinion on certain items. They do have an impressive breakfast selection that does not involve tacos. We decided on the chicken and waffles, chai tea and almond croissant and the meal more than made it for the baristas attitude. The food was amazingly delicious. I will say that it is sad to see so many establishments reducing their quality of staff due to a shortage of employees and that makes most people with standards decide to take their business elsewhere. read more

The coffee was good, the sandwich and fruit were fine, and the cin roll was delish! BUT as expected the price was INSANE! Being from WA state where spots like these are every 10 feet we didn't think it was anything special. If you're staying at the hotel and want something quick it works, or go around the corner to the little grocery store and grab something better and cheaper. This has become one of my favorite breakfast places. The level of service and quality of food is consistent. Beware, if you have a large party - you might need to wait as space is rather cozy with limited tables. However, you will not be disappointed. I always order the Austin American Breakfast plate - just the right amount of food for me while my husband loves the Smoked Brisket Hash. You move through the line rather fast and the line will end up at the beverage station. Order your drink and then move down the line to order your food. 18% gratuity is already added into your bill. We got the most amazing and flaky cinnamon rolls I have ever had. Piled on top was a delicious cream cheese icing. I did the chicken and Texas stamped waffles.
