The pizza here is delicious and we enjoyed the ambience and appreciated the owner Matt stopping by to help us with our wine selection. We've also ordered pizza to go in the past as well and we've been very pleased with the crust, presentation, and overall taste. My only constructive feedback is on our salad and service. The Caesar salad was delicious but I wasn't a fan of the large leaves of lettuce. If I have to cut my salad, I'm going to be disappointed. Our waiter was fine but we waited on salads for quite a while. I understand the pizza needs to cook, but at least bring out the salads quickly. Bottom line though, it's the best pizza in town and we will continue to go back. read more

1929 has moved to Edwardsville IL and this review is on the new location. The new space is even better than the prior one - it is not cramped and I believe there are more tables. The menu has expanded a bit and it seems that they have more specials. The Share Board also added house made crackers which are mind blowingly good. We have been to 1929 multiple times and it never disappoints! My most recent visit was with my sister; I had the house salad and we each ordered a pizza and split a bottle of wine - so so good!! 1929 opened with instant popularity. The owner is great and very personable on Instagram and has built a great following. Which means they fill-up their tables fast and you'll most likely have to wait, if you do not get there early. The night I went, I was there when the doors opened and within a half hour it was packed and had a waitlist. Since I was dining alone, I offered to sit at the bar to keep their tables available. I like the industrial feel of the dining room and the open kitchen. It's kinda cool to see your salad and pizza being made from your table. I enjoyed a glass of Portlandia, a red blend from Oregon, to accompany my Caesar salad and Pepperoni pizza. It was what the menu paired with my pizza. The salad wasn't a typical Caesar, instead of chopped Romaine, it was made with large whole hearts of Romaine. Some would complain that they'd have to cut it into bite size pieces, but it didn't bother me. I also liked how they use breadcrumbs instead of traditional croutons. However, the house made dressing needs to be tweaked. It needs more anchovy flavor and for me personally, I'd love to see some white anchovies as a garnish. The star of my meal was definitely the pizza. It's a traditional red sauce, topped with salami, pepperoni and house made mozzarella. I ate half at the bar and took the remainder home for next day lunch. Reheating it in the air fryer, it was just as tasty. The service was a little bumpy, but once they get their sea legs, I think they'll be fine. Opening a new restaurant will have its bumps. They've got their main attraction, pizza mastered. Now they can focus on customer service. I will return to enjoy a, Four Cheese or Sausage and Peppers pizza. read more

I work in IL and Wood River is not terribly far from there even though it's probably 45 minutes from home. 1929 Pizza & Wine has been on my radar so I decided to swing by after work. They're only open 3 nights a week and that makes it a little hard to get to. I walked in a few minutes after they opened and asked for a table for one. The hostess said she wasn't sure where to put me since they have a lot of reservations. I assured her I'd be quick about it and wasn't looking to sit there all night. I have no problem dining alone. I'm guessing this place seats about 50 ish people and by the time I left right before 6 it was close to being full. I did get sat within two minutes but it was over 10 minutes after that before my server finally came to the table and acknowledged me. I ordered water, potato pizza, and Caesar salad all in one breath. I believe the owner dropped off my Caesar salad and failed to notice I still didn't have water. A few more minutes went by and I did receive a table bottle of water and filled my first glass myself about 17 minutes after being seated. I think we can agree this is not the tone the restaurant should want to set for the meal. The salad didn't have the umami I'm expecting from Caesar. There was no anchovy taste and no acid. I did like the texture of the breadcrumbs instead of a crouton. The pizza came out just as I was chewing the last bite of salad. So on to the Potato Pizza (roasted garlic, EVOO, thinly sliced potatoes, herbs, Parmigiano Reggiano, sea salt, black pepper)... The garlic and rosemary flavors were great. The Parmigiano cheese and black pepper were sparse and I don't think I got any sea salt. The crust was a little heavier and less airy than I think it should have been. I personally liked the amount of char on the edges though. After two slices I called it and asked for a box. My server brought out the check. I pulled out some cash and asked for $5 change. The server explained they didn't have it and she was giving me $10. I did have a $5 bill in my wallet so I handed her that which made it a like a 26% tip instead of just $1 had I just kept the $10 bill. If it says somewhere they don't take cash I totally missed it. Had someone said they prefer a card I totally would have taken back the cash and gladly handed her a card. My final thoughts are... The pizza oven is beautiful. The remodel of the building is really well done. The salad was a dud. The pizza was good but I think it would be better if you increased the moisture or hydration of the dough so it's airier. The service could use some improvement mostly regarding timing, pacing, and the importance of acknowledgement and beverages. read more

They have a great atmosphere for such a small place! I can imagine it will be a great hangout when the weather is a bit nicer and they have the garage style doors opened. I believe the wine prices are slightly high if you enjoy a good drink, but the selection is good and I enjoyed the house red quite a bit. I think the food items were priced appropriately. The wood fired pizza is amazing and the salads are equally as good. I highly suggest the house salad, a traditional Italian style salad with onions, croutons, vinegar and oil dressing and blue-cheese crumbles. We didn't get the Caesar salad, but it also looked equally amazing. My only complaint would be the croutons were not really seasoned and a bit too crunch for my tastes. read more

The first thing I did this morning was tell just about everyone I know how good the bread was (on the table board). Some friends and I popped by for dinner and the place is incredible. Cozy without feeling cramped. Warm ambient lighting. I ordered the table board and it was amazing. Warm olives, roasted garlic, various butters, ricotta-type cheese with honey (?) and the aforementioned bread. Get. The. Bread. Between four of us we ordered three pizzas and that was plenty to share with leftovers for all. We tried the mushroom pizza, pepperoni, and the special which had prosciutto. All delicious. The crust is perfect. We shared two bottles of wine -- their list is fairly extensive and nothing seemed overwhelmingly expensive. Going out with a bang, we shared a few dark chocolate filled cannolis. All in all a terrific experience. Both of the owners chatted with us and several other guests and our server was excellent. this is a great place to eat. they bake their own breads used for their appetizers, bruschetta and make their doughs for pizzas Their pizzas are not like anything you have eaten in past. they are actually pretty to look at. First time there. Please of free parking around the restaurant. Had a reservation and the hostess seated us right away. Started with the Bread and Butter board, a small plate of bread and 3 different butters, and a Caesar salad. Bread was great and salad had great flavor. For pizza, we went with the Special - Carbonara and the Sausage and Peppers. Both pizzas were delicious and the pizza crust was the perfect. The Carbonara pizza was phenomenal. Two people can easily share a pizza but we just wanted to try a couple different ones since it was our first time there. Ended with the cannoli, which was a lemon curd this week. It was also very delicious. Everything was made from scratch with fresh ingredients and you could really tell. Service was exceptional. Wine choices were great. Definitely try out the wine pairing! My wife and I were excited to find this place. We made the reservation (I was warned they book up quickly) and were greeted by an exceptionally nice young lady who greeted us and escorted us to our table. The restaurant was very clean, conservatively decorated and bustling with a low hum of customers enjoying their food. Our server was Kip - who I must say did an amazing job serving us. We started with the Artisan Bread and Butter app. All Freshly made - warm and delicious. Artisan Butter - Herbed / Honeyed etc. were all top notch with the Brined olives app - All made in house. I have to say as simple as it might sound , the apps. were the perfect accompaniment to our wine - We had a white Bordeaux to start. Ordered 3 different pizzas - Handmade dough - All pizzas were top notch - Crispy on the outside - tender on the inside. Fresh mozzarella - all fresh, homegrown ingredients - we later found out from Amy and Matt (owners). It quite honestly the best pizza I have ever eaten. A second bottle of wine - Pinot Noir was consumed as well. We had so much fun! We followed up with dessert - a delicious Cannoli - homemade (of course) This was a milestone birthday for me (50) - and I have to say 1929 made it the best birthday ever. We have eaten at 1929 twice, having their mushroom pizza (twice) and their daily special pizza which was a fantastic combination of spam and peaches. I've told a number of people about that combination and get pretty consistent, "that's odd" type responses but I encourage everyone to give it a try if it is available. Service has been great, nice selection of wine, salads are very good, also. Worth the trip to Wood River if you don't live or work nearby. Hopefully downtown Wood River will develop into a Foodie hub building off 1929 as a catalyst. read more

Had a great time last night at 1929, this place smells amazing when you walk through the door.Make reservations, it was busy, which tells you this place is legit. Had the bread board-amazing and delicious, hands down best bread I've had and I make bread. I had the Greens, which was fresh, zesty, a little spice it was dynamite. My sister had the mushroom and she also found it to be delicious. Matt and Amy are amazing hosts, we felt well taken care of and will be back to try out additional items. Our experiences at 1929 Pizza and Wine have been no surprise - after all the Chef and Baker are Amy and Matt Herrin so we expected nothing less than culinary pleasure - and we got it! They are creating truly elevated pizzas in an open kitchen wood fired oven worthy of the 40 minutes it takes us to get there. Our first visit we started with fire roasted garlic and bread - the garlic was perfectly roasted - sweet and mellow drizzled with EVOO and served with slices of house made foccacia and naturally leavened bread. We followed with the house salad which was simple and amazing - a generous serving of romaine leaves, red onion and maytag blue cheese (no - I don't like blue cheese and don't do dairy as a rule but I had a little bite and in this combination I would eat it all day long if I could) The salad was tossed with a silky, perfectly balanced lemon vinaigrette and house made (of course!) croutons. then the pizza arrives! on our fist trip we had the Greens pizza - pesto, walnuts, kale, EVOO and a sprinkling of imported Italian parmigiano reggiano...... sublime! we also shared the potato pizza - thinly sliced potatoes, evoo, rosemary and sea salt and on a crust that was cracker thin and crisp in the middle building to a chewy, pillowed edge with a perfect char. The evening ended with a house made cannoli that made my husband's eyes roll back it was so delicious - crisp pastry and perfectly sweet chocolate cherry filling. Our 2nd visit together with friends we started with the roasted garlic again but added the oil marinated olives which were served warm. They were satiny-tender, delicious and flavorful! We split a salad and this time had the Vegan option Ceasar Salad which was outstanding as expected. For pizza we could not resist both ordering the evening special......thinly sliced butternut squash, arugula, balsamic drizzle and (for me because I avoid dairy when I can) a Vegan Parmesan. my husband's had the parmigiano reggiano and he was quite pleased - as was I. We split a bottle of Portlandia Blended red as suggested by the owner Matt and it was a fruity, smooth complement to the pizzas. Just so you know - there are more conventional pizza offerings and from what we saw from surrounding diner's reactions they are equally delicious. Pacing from the kitchen was perfect on both evenings - we never felt rushed or ignored. The food came out allowing us to enjoy our food, wine and company. We were well attended but not interrupted by Wait Staff. I'm look forward to many more meals and are so grateful Amy and Matt have brought their crafts to the Metro East!
