Asked to move to that table but the couple right behind us got it. I'm pregnant so couldn't order a cocktail. Asked if they could make me a drink but make it a mocktail and he said no?????!!!!! EVERY other restaurant when I asked to see mocktail menu they say- we can make any drink on the menu a mocktail. Calamari- disgusting. Steak- not the best. Pasta dish- ok. Soooo overpriced for the food you get. Will never be back and DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!! And didn't even get to see the sunset which is what we came for. read more

This was our anniversary and while it was busy we were given such a great table and a wonderful server. (she was blond and happy and very articulate) The pasta dish was incredible and the wines to pair with them were too - I am excited to return and get one of their larger booths. The interior is downright steakhouse meets the old west with a ton of good brass chandeliers. Live music was going on in the bar area and I cannot wait to get into all of that when we are back to the beach again. Everything was PERFECT! Arax Gugasian has done an incredible job with 21 Oceanfront (located at 2100 West Oceanfront) and we would most certainly return on our next visit to Newport Beach! In business for around 12 years, our experience at this establishment was superb. We started our meal off with some really tasty escargot - $18 and some cocktails from the full bar. My daughter had the rack of lamb - $52, wife the ribeye - $65 and me the Chilean sea bass - $55. We all tried each others entrees and the consensus was unanimous... every one loved the taste of their own and everyone else's plate as well! The main dishes do not come with sides so we ordered the au gratin potatoes - $16 and the Brussels sprouts - $15. These too was ultra tasty! We sat in the alley west section and had an epic view of the Pacific Ocean as the sun went down. The decor in this place is super cool and gives off an old school Board Walk Empire type vibe to me. Marina was our server and did a stellar job taking care of us. I would highly recommend anyone looking for impeccable service to request her section. The wine menu was extensive and the year and vintage of what I picked was exactly what was brought to the table. BRAVO here! Old school vibes for sure. If you grew up knowing the area ya'll will know. It's been around forever, quite humble looking on the inside and still charming on the inside. My friends and I would joke about having our graduation here when we were 8 years old. Fast forward and we did have many celebrations here and it's still standing and hopefully it will continue for decades to come. To be honest it's more 2.5 stars if that was an option. I don't think the price matches up with food and quality of service. Our bill came out to 230.00 yet I felt like we weren't really taken care of. I'm not sure if it's because we're a bit younger, but who knows. The food overall was not that great. Drinks were good. I am from Philadelphia it was in California to visit my girlfriend. She lives about 30 minutes from Newport Beach but I did my research and landed on this place for a romantic date. The service was 10/10. The drinks were also 10/10. The food was close to perfect but if I'm being honest the sides were not that great. That being said the chocolate soufle is 100% must. Absolutely lovely place. Came here for my wife's birthday and it was nothing short of amazing. Every one of the staff was nothing short of courteous and glowing. View at sunset was stunning. Food is a 10 out of ten. The suggested jumbo lobster tail was amazing as was lobster mac and cheese. My filet center cut was delicious and au gratin potatoes hit the spot. Had a couple of the blueberry lemonade gin drinks, and almost always recommend subbing in the Botanist. We got two entrees following half a dozen oysters- I got the scallops and my partner got a steak (I don't remember the cut!). Both were fantastic, and we had also ordered a side of lobster mac n cheese as well as grilled asparagus to split. It was a luxurious dinner that was significantly contributed to by the attentive and respectful service, as well as the low-key atmosphere (it wasn't crowded at ~7pm on a week day, so it was comfortably quiet). We're looking forward to returning the next time we'd like to have a special evening, and also just for a relaxing drink (probably that blueberry lemonade again) at the bar that faces the ocean (most locations on this strip get an A+ for sunset views) read more

Went here last weekend for restaurant week. They charged $105 per person when the reservation was made. Nobody in our party minds paying for good food.. but in all my adult years I have never had such horrible tasting food at any restaurant. Even though the set menu was not cohesive.. if the food would have been good it would have been fine, it was just that bad. Our server only asked us once how we were doing and it was right after bringing drinks, never again did he check on us after the food. I am almost positive he could tell we were dissatisfied. I am not sure why they thought it would be be a good idea to participate in restaurant week and then serve what we got. I will never go back or recommend this place to anyone. This is a new restaurant to my wife and I even though I know it has been around. We thought this would be the perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was! First of all, prepare to valet. Parking is a nightmare at the pier. The valet is well worth it.Connected to a hotel, 21 Oceanfront has a great view of the beach and Newport Pier. It reminds me a lot of 555 in downtown Long Beach. Old school, upscale vibe albeit with more seafood options and a much better view. Our waiter was very friendly and made the night special. We started with a bottle of wine and the fried cauliflower. This appetizer is a must have. Our entrees were the filet and swordfish with sides of asparagus and mashed potatoes. The swordfish is huge and delicious. I couldn't believe I ate the whole thing. I was very impressed. The filet was very good as well but I still remember that swordfish. Took my husband there for a per- father's day dinner. Their service was AMAZING!!! The ambiance was very romantic, and the live music was a NICE touch. The appetizers were delicious, and the lamp chops were tender and cooked to perfect!!! One would think the entire meal was going to be as tasty. However, the main course was least to be desired. I had the rib eye steak, and my husband had the filet mignon. My steak was chewy and had no flavor, and my husband's filet mignon was on the dry side. One would think for the prices the main courses would be better. BUT our sides were DELICIOUS!!! The asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes, and the lobster mac 'n cheese were outstanding. The morning started with an empty room in a basement, beautiful but too many tables too close together once it was full. One of the servers even hit me in the head with his elbow while filling water glasses for another large table. It wouldn't have been so bad, but he did not even apologize. There was one server and one person busing the tables when we were there and the service was extremely slow. There just weren't enough servers to serve the amount of patrons. The table was not bussed before they served us our main meal which came quickly whether or not there was anywhere to put it down. It was set on top of glasses and phones, and whatever else happened to be there. It was served too quickly and hastily. For a fine dining restaurant I would say it wasn't so fine. I've been to this restaurant a few times in the past, and i remember the food being top notch. Definitely 4 stars for the past. But i ate here recently with my wife and had a completely different experience. Im not sure what changed, but right now the judgement of the kitchen staff is questionable. We were celebrating our anniversary and staying at the Dorymans Inn (upstairs). I got a bowl of french onion soup and was embarrassed for the chef and the restaurant. To be fair, the rest of the food was great as expected...but this soup should have never been served to a single patron...not even at a low end restaurant. I cant imagine that this dish would have passed as "good" anywhere in the world. The onions werent even close to brown & carmelized. They were grey and translucent, as was the broth. There was none of the carmelized onion sweetness that is the focal point of a french onion soup. If this was all that was available, we should have been told that they were out of soup. A can of campbells soup would have been 10 times better... and im not exagerating. We're not the kind of folks that send food back, so we just left the full bowl of onion water that we paid 15 buck for. 1 star for the onion water read more

Don't come if you don't want to be disrespected. Our party of 9 dined here for first time to celebrate a special birthday-- we expected a pleasant evening with delicious food and excellent service. Instead, we were served with attitude from the snooty manager. We ordered the lobster tail, among many dishes, which was going to be shared amongst the table. When it came, a few of us noticed it was very salty, but decided to just deal with it. When another member of our party tasted it, they pointed out that it was way too salty to consume, especially for the price we paid and the quality we expected. It was cut up into pieces, so we put everything back and told our waiter, who sent the manager. The manager's immediate response was that it was eaten so there was nothing he could do about it. The lobster was already a small portion, but more than half of it was left even though it was split between several people. He had a very condescending tone, saying it was more than half gone, so it was not their problem and he could not do anything. Even our waiter came back shocked that the manager did not provide a solution and responded so defensively. Luckily our waiter was very kind and asked the chef to try to fix it, although it was still very salty and inedible after. As someone who works in fine-dining, this is absolutely NOT how a restaurant should be run. We spent hundreds of dollars on this dinner, and were not able to enjoy it to the fullest because of the extremely rude behavior of the manager. He disappeared and could not even look us in the eye as we exited the restaurant. Do better. Learn how to treat your customers appropriately and with respect. This should be the bare minimum. Food wasn't as good as I expected considering it's fairly upscale and the bill reflected it. I ordered the filet mignon and 12oz. lobster tail for my girlfriend. The filet and the lobster were a bit over cooked when we actually ordered the filet medium rare. I also ordered the lobster bisque and it was a bit bland when commonly it should be on the rich side, right? I found myself looking for a salt shaker to give the flavor a jump start but I guess since we're in an upscale restaurant they won't have those readily available so I just tried my best to enjoy it but was utterly disappointed especially because there was hardly any lobster in it. It was garnished with probably a t-spoon of lobster crumbs but that was about it. As for the restaurant, I was highly impressed. I love nostalgia and this place was decorated very classy and nostalgic. We sat on a table for two up towards the front with a window view of the beach and water. It was during the evening right after sunset. The red rose and candle light on our table made it very romantic. We went on a Monday evening so the restaurant wasn't at all near capacity so we practically had the dining room to ourselves it felt very exclusive. The service was good the servers were friendly and attentive as they should be nothing out of the ordinary. Would I come here again? Perhaps I would give it another visit because the restaurant is very nice. I'll just be little more specific on how I want the food to be prepared maybe mention to please do not overcook the lobster. read more

I've always passed by this restaurant when going to the pier so decided to bring my boyfriend here for his birthday. They accommodated to my request of wanting to be sat where we had an ocean view. When we first got there we realized it was pretty loud probably not the best place to take someone for a romantic date. Our waiter Colin had very good customer service. However, it did take a long time for our food to arrive. The couple sitting next to us arrived 15 minutes after us; they were able to finish their whole entire meal and leave before we even got our main entrée. This is one of those places where you just come for the view and to drink. I had higher expectations for the food considering we were basically right by the ocean. Appetizers - Calamari 5/5 The best dish of the night! I recommend Main Entrée - Filet Mignon 1/5 No flavor at all. Ordered mine Medium well but still very chewy. I had to ask for salt and pepper to season it myself. Feels like a TV Dinner you just popped in the microwave. Not worth the price! Main Entrée - Salmon Filet 2/5 Cooked perfectly. However, no real flavor at all. The broccoli tasted like it was cooked in Taco Bell's hot sauce. Side - Truffle Mac n Cheese 1/5 Rating this a 1-5 is being nice. ZERO FLAVOR! Bland pasta drenched in bread crumbs. I could make better Mac with a krafts box. I regret getting this. I am a huge fan of mac & cheese so I was very disappointed. Drink - Jack with Sprite and Lemon 5/5 Let's just say the bartender was not stingy with the alcohol. I noticed that unlike the tables on the first floor, this room had no flowers on the table and no windows. The salad was very plain and we had to ask for extra dressing. The filet mignon was fairly plain as well. The bathrooms were extremely small with only one stall and one urinal. The staff was nice and it wasn't terrible, but far from worth $400. read more

I am professionally trained and hold a Master Professional Chef degree and I was part of an exceptional restaurant in St. Helena, California with one of the three best chefs in the world. Tonight I had the opportunity to reaffirm what I have know for a while, but have yet to declare as I wanted to me certain. It is not the only excellent delectable they have, but their Baseball Swordfish at 21 Oceanfront is not only the best Swordfish I have ever had, it is without a doubt the Peter Lugar of Swordfish. Peter Lugar would be honored to serve such a dish. If you are within 500 miles of Newport Beach and you do not have this dish, you do not love great food. Honestly. read more

It wouldn't have been possible to choose this restaurant if not for Visit Anaheim.org. Per website, there will be a 15% off food portion of the bill. My reservation is at 5:45 pm, but we arrived early. The front desk was nice enough to seat us. We ordered Lobster bisque, shrimp scampi, Asian Pear Salad, crispy parmesan parsley fries, Chilean Sea Bass and Chocolate Soufflé for dessert. The Lobster Bisque was delicious, with a rich and flavorful taste. The Shrimp Scampi, on the other hand, had a rather ordinary flavor. The Asian Pear Salad was a bit too sour, possibly due to an excess of vinaigrette. Unfortunately, the Chilean Sea Bass was still cold in the middle, so we had to request that it be cooked more. The Chocolate Soufflé looks good, with crispy exterior and a velvety, soft interior. However, the chocolate sauce, unfortunately tasted diluted, almost as if water had been added. As our dining experience neared its end and the bill arrived, I presented a pass indicating a 15% discount. Carley, our server, who had been exceptionally pleasant from the beginning to the end, took the initiative to involve the manager. Unfortunately, our encounter with the manager took a turn for the worse. Despite presenting the coupon and acknowledging its authenticity, he rudely denied honoring it. He went on to explain that there was no agreement to offer a 15% discount through the website. Looks like I am not the only one who complained about the manager based on the other reviews. I cannot recommend 21 Oceanfront. The food lacks any distinguishing qualities, and the overall experience is further marred by an inconsiderate manager. Server ensured me my meal and dessert were gluten free and then in conversation after eating he described gluten as something to do with being vegan and not eating dairy or potatoes. I ended up getting incredibly sick with an autoimmune flare up for almost a week. Unacceptable dishonesty from this guy who was more like a shady car salesman. This is definitely a wonderful restaurant for a date, a business meeting, or even a classy function. Food is great, no complaints! Filet was cooked to perfection, sides were amazing, and Cesar salad was something to note as well. Dress code enforced, which is actually nice. No beach attire!
