A comedy of errors led me to lunch on the South side today. It's a long story…read more.. I've wanted to try Chicken Heat for some time. I love fried chicken and I'm a glutton for punishment... Although I errored on the side of caution and steered clear of the ghost and Carolina reaper levels. I walked in at about 1130 AM today and was greeted straight away! The gentleman at the counter asked if I needed a menu. But like any decent foodie I'd already done my due diligence online. I ordered a hot chicken sandwich with pickles and slaw, an order of the Nashville shrimp, and a grape Sunkist soda. I want to say the total was $18 and change before tip. He let me know it would be about a 10 min wait. Mannnn... Talk about hot and fresh. I unpacked it in my car. And hot in more ways than one... I loved that the styrofoam container for the shrimp was vented so the breading didn't get soggy. The spice level on the shrimp was excellent. A little burn, but not enough to completely overpower the delicate taste of the shrimp itself. I'd read a couple of reviews that said the spice levels on the chicken sandwiches were to the milder side so I was confident ordering hot. Those reviews were wrong. Lol My tolerance might be down a little but this was way way past the "Iowa hot" we usually get in the metro. Thank God for the slaw and the soda. There were no tears but I could sure feel it. It was so very good! Portion-wise the sandwich was massive. There were enough shrimp it was worth the money. I can usually put down two Popeye's and here...one was sure enough. I finished my lunch as one happy camper. Good show guys! I didn't feel like the extra carbs today but next time I'll definitely sample the collard greens, the mac n cheese, the onion rings, and anything else that catches my eye. I hear they do catfish on Fridays... And I love me some catfish! While my order was take out there is an indoor dining area available. To order enter through the front and head to the Right. The dining area is kind of a seperate area with it's own set of doors. After ordering head back towards the front and it's kind of to the Left. Make sure you check their sites (below) for their hours... https://chickenheat.com/ https://www.facebook.com/flameonheat?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Finally stopped by Chicken Heat for the first time at their new location. I'd tried their sandwich…read morea while back when they were still selling out of the truck. Honestly kinda mad I waited so long! It's even better than I remember. I had their "hot" sandwich the first time, and I wished it hurt a little more, so I tried the "xl" spicy this time. It was pleasantly spicy, but still not as punishing as I wanted, so I'm definitely going to try the next level up next time. The sandwich itself was HUGE, the chicken was juicy, the breading was crisp, bun was fresh, and the pickle+slaw was a nice accompaniment. All in all, a solid and satisfying sandwich (even if it didn't leave me in tears). Partner and I also got a side of fried okra, and that was a good treat! Only slight disappointment was that they didn't seem to be set up for dine-in, so had to wait a car ride home before inhaling this delicious dinner.

Was a little confused about where to go because the exterior didn't match the name of the business…read more But I trusted my nose and followed that amazing smell of chicken! The women who welcomed us and took our order were so friendly and the chef let us know it would take a bit because he was dropping it in hot. I was surprised to find several drummies instead of a big piece of chicken but made sharing much easier. Chicken was hot and crispy and seasoning was amazing! The waffle was good but was outshone by the chicken. Overall amazing experience and will be following this business and checking them out again!

It was also my first Yelp perks event. Instructions were not clear on what to do when I arrived. Was able to see someone was asking who were at a laptop. A man came out and announced they were going to be making our meals fresh and they would start coming out. I made the assumption he was the chef and owner. I would have enjoyed hearing the history of the business and more from the event coordinators. Hearing their story would add to my word of mouth references when someone asks what have we been doing that is new. When the food came out it was piping hot. It would have easily made a 20 minute drive home and still stay fresh. I choose the original chicken. It had good classic flavor and appearance. I was surprised it was wings and drumsticks as I was expecting a large chicken breast or thigh. The smaller chicken was easier to eat and manage. Chicken was not crisp which made it feel more home made then other restaurant too. It looked and tasted hand breaded which was a great treat and I prefer. The waffle was nice sweet add to the meal. I will definitely try this combination again. As we were eating, we were served fresh peach cobbler. It was so hot it steamed when I opened the container. I immediately stopped eating the chicken and moved to the dessert. It was delicious. Runner then cobblers I typically have. There was enough food I shared with my spouse when returning home.

We parked in the back and the first impression was great - the smell of actively smoking meat on the way in is always a positive for me! Inside, we found the decor to be clean and modern as was the storefront when I stepped out to take a picture for this review. As is almost always the case when we are out for dinner, we started with drinks - my wife opting for the Coconut Mojito (see picture) while I ordered the Caribbean Sea Margarita (see picture). Both were very good and are highly recommended, although they were a bit pricy...especially for their size (although that seems to becoming the norm everywhere). The menu was a bit limited, but did have some very unique dishes (see picture) - one of the main reasons that we love restaurants like this! For dinner, my wife ordered the Suya Pepper Shrimp (see picture) and I went for the Jerk Chicken with Coconut Candied Yams and Jollof Rice (see picture). The chicken was extremely tender and delicious...just be aware that it was served in what is likely a very traditional African / Caribbean style - chopped into small pieces with numerous bone fragments. We both thought the flavors of both dishes were wonderful - so would recommend them and would definitely order again. If you are looking for a unique African / Caribbean food and drink experience in downtown Des Moines...you will definitely enjoy a stop here!
