Having dined here many times in the past I considered it a go to option for reliable great food and service. After receiving an email recently from the restaurant it sounded like they were treading water and needed more business. With that in mind I tried to make a reservation for 5 on Open Table for an upcoming birthday but was unable to reserve through them for 5 and was instructed to contact the restaurant directly. I called three times over two days and left two messages as well as filling out a contact form on their website. After several days of no response I gave up and reserved elsewhere. It is so disappointing to try and help what has been a stellar restaurant and not receive any response to my requests. read more

They are the safest location in town for a dine-in, date and dining experience. You check in at the counter and from there, everything is taken care of. They take reservations, and have each table not only separated, but each table has a curtain separation. It is a rule that you keep your mask very close so that you can put it on during every interaction with the waitstaff. Also, they have a filter in their air system that makes sure that all the air that is pumped into their restaurant is filtered and as safe as possible. This restaurant spent the time they had being forced to close to (even) better their restaurant (if that is even possible, with new renovations, safety precautions, and more delicate and precise pasta making machines). Although this pandemic has hit everyone hard, 3 Doors Down Cafe & Lounge has rolled with the punches, made the absolute best of it, and come back better than ever. We had two glasses of delicious wine (thank you to our server for the recommendations), I also had a draft Manhattan (GOOD LAWD!!!! It's like a pairing of a spiked dessert that has a liquor kick that you want and need), fresh bread and spread, a massive bowl of steamer clams (my husband had never experienced these...clean plate club, plus the sauce is like nothing I have tasted before. I have to go back to figure out what their secret is...I think it is freshness), fresh beets with chives and fresh ground pepper, their house caesar salad with toasted anchovie crumbs, and a pappardelle with beef and pork bolognese. $91 Of course I tipped $25. Please do the same, if not more! Everything was so safe and delicious! In a time that everything is scary, but hopefully getting better, please support local businesses! I'm sorry to write this about our neighborhood restaurant, a place I've eaten at dozens of times, but the restaurant has now become so lazy. The menu never changes, though yesterday of two entrees on offer, one was unavailable--on the weekend. And what was available was bland. The pappardelle pasta special was overcooked and gummy, the Bibb salad served with a watery glug of dressing. Don't even mention desserts, which are all sugar and no flavor, the same desserts that have been on the menu for years. A few weeks ago we had the peppermint ice cream which our server highly recommended: it tasted like cough syrup with little bits of unchewable candy cane mixed in. Somebody in the kitchen is making food but not tasting it--and if you can't trust your server.... There used to be a small but good variety of appetizers on offer. No more. I'd hate to see 3Doors close, but it seems to be on the verge of no return. read more

Pork came over polenta - not listed on the menu and this almost did me in (I abhor it). She was kind enough to suggest nearly 10 places for happy hour, and 3 Doors Down Cafe was one of those on the list. HAPPY HOUR: 500-930pm, Tuesday thru Thursday; Sunday, 400-900pm After a extensive day of driving, shopping, and sight-seeing, my friend and I were definitely looking forward to enjoying happy hour. We looked over the menu and ordered: 1. Pugliese and white bean spread: Good. Generous portions of bread and spread are provided. 2. Salad--bibb lettuce, chives, bacon, creamy garlic dressing: Very good. Decent portion. Just enough to share between the 2 of us. Loved the dressing! 3. Baked macaroni & cheese: Cheesy goodness. Delicious. Recommended. 4. Pasta--tortiglioni with vodka sauce & sausage: My FAVORITE dish of the 4 items we ordered! This is incredibly good. So delicious that I almost wanted to be selfish and order my own. Really I did. I mentioned to our server at how much I loved this dish and he told us that it's their specialty/signature dish. This magical place was one of my early introductions to the Hawthorne area. We had an amazing dinner with a group of friends and it was so good that I almost didn't want to return. Well, after sampling so many of Portland's other fine and not-so-fine restaurants, I recently returned and it wowed me once again. On my first visit, we started with cocktails at the wrap around bar and I had the wickedly spicy vodka penne pasta with sausage. The serving was large enough to share and I remember how outstanding the table service was that evening. For my return visit, we didn't bother moving to a table and my group just enjoyed drinking and eating at the bar since it was so pleasant. I ordered a vodka sour with their fabulous house made blood orange sour mix. If that wasn't delectable enough, it comes with two different types of cherries. I do have a weakness for cherries. One was a regular maraschino cherry and the other was a special creation of the bartender, Matt. He also has a weird science experiment going on behind the bar (which I told him looks like ears floating in a jar), but is really chanterelle mushrooms in some strange looking brew. The rustic bread with the white bean spread is simple and delicious. Since I wasn't terribly hungry I ordered the scallops starter as my meal. Three beautifully prepared scallops with kale and smoked bacon. Mmmm... doesn't bacon make everything better? In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I was in the company of my friends who are regulars here both times. So I think our party received a little extra special attention from the owner and wait staff since we were in their esteemed presence. But, the prices seem reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food and the service is way above average. Practically perfect for a nice neighborhood place. The Best (and I mean THE BEST) restaurant chef in Portland is the head chef at 3 Doors Down Cafe. This glorious triple-bay storefront off Hawthorn & 37th is my favorite place in Portland. They have some truly interesting and beautiful artwork on the walls but It's NOT pretentious, just TOP NOTCH. It's a warm & wonderful, uncrowded & delightful place to really enjoy the excellent service and unequaled, inventive Italian gourmet cuisine. I've been to other famous places in Portland and this place is less well-known but, guess what, it's better than most, if not all, of the others. I Can't wait to go back! Great ambience and food! I wish I lived closer, but wait...no...that might end badly. I would become one of those stalkerish patrons that eats every meal there. The bread and bean spread they serve with it is fantastic. I could just sit and eat that...for...every...meal. The Pan Fried Brussels Sprouts and Risotto are ah-mazing!!! I could seriously eat that risotto every day. It was that good. Our server was a little blah, but I'm beginning to suspect this is a Portland thing. The atmosphere is super cute, with mismatched chairs at the tables. We stopped by here during whiskey week I believe, and found out they had a lemon drop slushy. The service was great, I would say our visit this last weekend had exceptional service (with a shout out to our waiter Steve and Jeff). Everything I have tried food wise has been "finish your plate" delightful (New York strip steak, house made ziti, and whatever pasta was on special this last weekend, and cannot forget their bread with white bean dip). But we order AT LEAST 2 lemon drop slushy's each, rain or shine those are so tasty! Not to sweet, not to sour, perfect for a sunny day! The patio is perfectly shaded and cool on Portlands warmer days! Go check them out and I hope you get Steve as your waiter! They are definitely trying with Covid and I respect that. Although wasn't to found of the set up with the clear plastic screens what can you do during these times. The service was a little slow for how little guest that had in and had to call our server down twice for more drinks and our check. My dish tho was phenomenal. I enjoyed every bite. Hit or miss, and not inexpensive. Every time we've eaten there it's been with a large group and at the preference of others whose company we wished to share. And every time about half of us were relatively happy with our meals with the other half somewhat less than pleased. During our last visit the favorite dish at our table was the sweet Italian sausage with tortiglione in a tomato and vodka cream. 3 Doors Down can be a bustling place. Came in for dinner on a Saturday night around 6pm. The bar was the only option but it was totally open so we decided to grab a spot. Bartender was super friendly, had funny stories and was great with recommendations. By the time we finished our meal, there were two other couples at the bar, so still not horribly crowded. Waters came first with bread that came with some sort of bean spread. A nice touch to have along with some standard butter. I ordered the pasta dish with mushrooms, bacon, poblanos, cream and chicken meatballs. It was delicious! A little on the rich side so I couldn't finish it all but it was definitely worth every bite. The rest of the menu items looked good as well, and I had a hard time deciding. If I wasn't just visiting I would definitely return. Nice ambience for a date or just a one on one meal. All I can say is this place is amazing. We had reservations for 7:45 and they got us right in. The vibe of this place is really nice. Nice bar to sit and wait for your table and they have both inside and outdoor seating. We ordered a bottle of wine from a pretty extensive wine list. The prices were what you want to pay. We ordered a Spanish red that was $36. They brought some really good bread and a white bean dip to spread on the bread. The dip with the bread was very good. I ordered the the spicy ziti with vodka sauce and sausage. My wife had the trpenne (triangle shaped penne pasta) with corn, heirloom tomatoes in a white wine sauce. The tomatoes made the pasta along with the light sauce. She said it was one of her favorite pasta dishes she has eaten. Our waitress was nice, friendly, and helpful. Located off Hawthorne Street in SE PDX. Really good food but the experience was marred by really high noise levels. For starters, we had the Burrata Cheese with Squash and Micro-greens - the squash was raw and really delicious. One of the best clean tasting starters I've had recently. We also had the Stuffed Mozarella Aranchini - nothing special, portion was teeny. Aside from the Burrata Cheese with Squash starters, 3 Doors Down's main courses are the stars of the menu. I ordered the Pork Chops and my dining companions gave a taste of all their pasta dishes. The Pork Chops was moist, the au jus was perfectly flavored. I loved the Rapini and Sweet Peppers that accompanied the dish. The server allowed me to substitute the mash potatoes with more Rapini and Peppers- My own Paleo version. All the pasta dishes were delicious. The Sheep Cheese Risotto with Beets was delicious. The rest of the pasta dishes I had tastes of were excellent too. 5 stars since most of menu items I tried were delicious. Noise level is quite loud. I'm not sure why it was so loud since most of the patrons were conversing at normal levels. Perhaps it's the lack of soft surfaces (including the chairs) in the restaurant. read more

We've been regular customers of 3 Doors Down since it opened. While we lived in the neighborhood, it was our go-to place for dinner and pretty much every family milestone. We spent many a New Year's Eve there, too. The food has always been and continues to be great, the service is warm and welcoming and the atmosphere is what the Hawthorne district is all about. The clams alone are worth driving across town for (and we do, even though we've moved out of the neighborhood) and the pastas are inspired. This has been a Portland staple that i've known about since I moved here 15 years ago and yet I still had never gone until now. It was absolutely fantastic! I really don't know what they did with halibut, but the flavor was unreal. We also had some pasta which we found out included homemade sausage. My wife had an old fashion and I ordered one of two cocktails they have on tap, which I have never heard of. I had the Manhattan, pictured in this review, and it was wonderful. You would never know it wasn't made 5 min prior. The ambience was great. The staff were wonderful and helpful. And the prices were reasonable. Just went to 3DD again after many years. It's very much the same. Kind of romantic, kind of street savvy. Matt has always been one of my favorite bartenders in Portland. He never fails to hit my drink spot. The Attorney's Privilege was a nice delivery of bourbon. The almond gave it a summery twist We over-ordered but it was date night. Why were the olives so addictive? Was it because they were briny and oily all at the same time or because they lingered while we took bites of chicken liver pate? Since we over-ordered the scallops were next. So perfectly crusty on the outside and delicate. I've never had a scallop served at a better temperature - very, very warm but not hot. The lovely sauce and asparagus were welcome but overshadowed by the perfection of scallops. (We asked and the secret is a very hot pan with half canola oil / half oil for two minutes a side. I don't think I could ever fine tune it to this degree.) Wine? Sure we'll have a bottle of 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. So well on its own while we wait for the entrees but a great accompaniment when they arrive. The pork chop was a great reward for a tough day working in the yard and shrimp with fettuccine was tomato-y and delectable. After a bite of my husband's pork chop I started to fantasize about melding the flavors of pork and mash potatoes with my tomato sauce. These are the thoughts good food should inspire. The service is discreet and conspiritial. The kind of place that makes you feel welcome. We didn't have dessert because we finally accepted our limitations but next time I'll leave room. This is one of my favorite all-time restaurants in Portland. My husband and I have been eating here for years and it is a solid, outstanding restaurant. The service is wonderful. Many of the servers have been working here for years and remember your name, your drink, and your favorite dishes. It is a warm, friendly atmosphere that starts with the owners who also work there. Second, the food is consistently outstanding. Penne pasta with vodka sauce is always a winner, but you can't go wrong with any of the dishes really. I've also tried many of the specials and they do not disappoint. Finally, the drinks are really good. My favorite is house vodka sour. They make their own mix in-house.
