My friend and I visited on a Tuesday around 7PM, parking was a little annoying since it was so busy and we ended up parking further away in front of Target, which was fine, but something to consider for anyone who prefers better accessibility. When we arrived there were no other customers, and the spacious interior was nicely decorated--pristine and colorful. It would be a great spot for a casual date night for sure. That said, I can see why the prices are higher than at most other Vietnamese restaurants. My friend ordered phở, while I chose the bánh hỏi with pork and chicken. My dish arrived in about 10 minutes. The scallion oil on the vermicelli added a nice touch, the meat had a great char, and the portions were just right. The cutlery was also eye candy and there was hand sanitizer in the sauce caddy too. I noticed the bánh mì was priced at $11, which seems a bit steep for an average-sized sandwich. While I didn't try it, I doubt there's much that can justify double-digit prices for bánh mì idk. I also spotted bò lúc lắc on the menu, which I might try if I decide to return. Overall the restaurant hits all the right notes with great food and a lovely casual atmosphere. read more

Sadly the pics of the food here look great but my personal experience was much different when I had dined in. The menu is very nice and hold a variety of items to chose from like rice, noodles, rolls, banh mi, and other items. I was excited to try a few items like the Pork Spring Rolls. They were just ok as the flavor was just not there for me, and the sauce was just terrible. Compared to places in Westminster where you can find Nem Nuong Cuong that are just addictive, this one here was just alright but the sauce made it worse. It was just like a salty sauce. Along with that, I wanted to try the vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and rocket shrimp. When the food came out, the pork was definite not grilled, it was sautéed as there was no grilled texture or flavor. The best part of the dish was the rocket shrimp but it was just one piece of shrimp. The presentation was also not that great as shown in pictures online. Lastly I requested the rolls to come out first for an appetizer but the entree came out maybe 3 mins into placing the order so I questioned the freshness of the food. I found this amazing Vietnamese restaurant in Tustin Marketplace called 399 Vietnamese Kitchen. I have to say, this is the best place to eat in Tustin Marketplace if you are craving some Asian food. I completely fell in love with their meat quality and taste. The salmon plates and salmon cube dish are so moist, juicy, and full of flavors, and they pair so well with plain rice and flavorful veggies. Their lychee lemonade is also very fresh with perfect sweet level. The pork meat in Loaded Banh Mi Fries was tender like jerky, with a soft and perfect thickness, and a delightful sweet taste. I also tried some unique cultural dishes, like the crispy spring roll, which was the best I've ever had. The servers are excellent, super friendly, and provided excellent recommendations. We even got the chance to learn the heartwarming story of the owners: a mom and daughter team. They use their own homemade recipes, with the mom as the chef. I can't forget to mention the restaurant's decor, so pretty, modern, and showcases Vietnamese culture. It's a great spot for family, friends, and dates. I got com tam (a rice dish) and they ran out of rice at noon on a Friday - didn't even know that was possible. (For more details: after ordering, they told me about a 10 minute wait and I went outside to wait. I came back about 10 mins later and they said another 5 mins. I went back about 5-8 mins and THEN they let me know there was no more rice and if they could substitute with noodles.) When they gave me the plate, they offered a metal knife but it really didn't cut well. Also, the dish should come with an egg-loaf-like thing but it was simply a fried egg. No fish sauce (nuoc mam) was given; just a sauce that I would like to believe is for the veggies because it didn't taste anything like fish sauce. It was sad to see Thai Spice, a long-time restaurant fixture at Tustin Marketplace, go out of business but 399 Vietnamese Kitchen is a more than adequate substitute. With a menu offering rolls, banh mi sandwiches, vermicelli, pho, rice dishes, wok fried dishes, and beverages & desserts, there is something for everyone. We visited on a weekend during the lunch hour and to our surprise, it wasn't too busy. We were seated quickly and ordered/received our lunch in a reasonable amount of time. The server even checked on us once to see how we were enjoying our meal. I ordered the Vermicelli (Bun) - Pick Two and selected the Grilled Pork and Grilled Pork Patty as my choices of protein. It was a hearty meal that actually filled me up. I also sampled the Shaking Salmon Cubes that my wife ordered, and we were both impressed by how delicate the salmon was prepared. My only criticism of the establishment would be the pricing - $16 for Bun and $24 for the Shaking Salmon Cubes seem overpriced but maybe that's the going rate these days? New favorite Vietnamese food spot!! 399 Vietnamese kitchen is located in the border of Tustin and Irvine -- super close to the market place in Tustin! Parking is easy in the lot outside of the plaza. They don't take reservations and can get very busy during the dinner hours so be sure to get a good time to go in! The staff are very helpful and friendly at the front. Valerie was great with our service and she always had a smile on her face. The food tastes authentic and super homemade here. We started off with some shaking beef with rice. But you can also get it with garlic noodles or fries. Next we tried the Vietnamese steak and eggs! This was by far one of the best piece of steak that I have ever had!! It came with two pieces of soft baguette :) the lobster pho had the biggest lobster tail. They definitely don't miss out on the size of that lobster!! The bone in rib pho was also huge. P.S. get the house made LYCHEE SLUSH!!!! I loved every sip of it and I'm craving it again :-) Overall the experience was wonderful! I'll be back soon to try out other menu items. This is an okay Vietnamese Pho place, but there are better options out there, especially in Lake Forest. I don't think I'd return. We went in during the weekend at dinner time, but there were many empty tables = not so good sign. The staff were friendly but they didn't seem to regularly clean the condiment containers. The sriracha bottle cap had so much of the dried out sauce, and this was the case for several tables. Kills your appetite before you can even begin. I got the Brisket Pho ($16.00) and my partner got the Combo Pho ($18.00); we also added the Egg Rolls ($12.00). The veggies were fresh and clean. The biggest downside was the broth: it was too sweet for both of us. The broth flavor is soooo important for Pho; this usually determines the success of the restaurant. I really wanted this to be my regular Pho place, as Lake Forest restaurants are a bit far, and a few places that are good in Irvine charge $20 or more per bowl. Feeling relieved, I immediately headed to the restaurant to give it a try. I came with a friend and was greeted immediately when we entered. The front counter is directly in front of you when you walk in, and the menu up above (if you're ordering to go). With only one family in the restaurant at the time, we were seated right away. As we were being directed to our table I couldn't help to notice how modern the interior was. Being the fatty that I am, I ordered some finger food to try and my usual dishes that I would order at a Vietnamese restaurant: Thit Nuong, Vermicelli w/ Grilled Pork & Rocket Shrimp, Rocket Shrimp, Nem Nuong Cuon, and Egg Rolls (Cha Gio). Well, how was everything? - Thit Nuong: The usual rice, veggies, and grilled pork with a side of the nuoc mam sauce. Though not as authentic as other places, the pork is pretty good. Definitely different than other places, but not bad at all. - Vermicelli w/ Grilled Pork & Rocket Shrimp: Same as the above except with vermicelli. I only got Rocket Shrimp because they didn't have grilled shrimp available. Pour the sauce all over and you're good to go. - Rocket Shrimp: Simple, fried, and good. - Nem Nuong Cuon: They come in a pair with the peanut sauce. The ingredients have an equal ratio. Pretty good. - Egg Rolls (Cha Gio): I was expecting the usual egg roll wrap but these came out wrapped in glass noodles. My first time eating it like this and it was pretty good. Crunchy. Service was good. Everyone was friendly and hospitable. Prices are a little high but it might be because it's in the Irvine area, haha. The first sip of broth was hearty but as I got into it, the broth got saltier and I kept reaching for my water cup. I was hoping for a wedge of lime to cut some of the saltiness but we were given a lemon wedge instead. I expected the brisket to be tender since it's been braised for 4-hours but it was dry and tough. I was also really sad with my spring rolls. Felt it lacked texture and flavor. We enjoy the food. We do a lot of take out from this place. We have dined in from time to time. Highly recommend the Pho, shaken beef, various noodle dishes all good. Nice decoration too especially for a shopping center place. I think they must be understaffed. Staff on the floor need to do a lot more ABC on tables that have turned. Remember cleaning is as important as the food. You shouldn't leave dirty dishes unbussed on like 7 tables when you only have two or three covers sitting there in post-lunch rush day parts. If you only have three tables, you aren't busy so you have time to clean. Unbussed tables ruin the experience for dine-in, and people you're just seating shouldn't have to look at it. It also doesn't look good to walk-by customers because you can see the disarray through the windows. You may be turning away walk-bys. don't do that. it's hard enough to make a buck in restaurants doing everything right. Doesn't mean the place is dirty, just not organized. My message is ABC. ABC. ABC. Your food is really really good, but you aren't helping yourself by leaving tables unbussed for 30 min or more. We want you to succeed. read more

Here is my experience. Space is comfortable to dine in, services were quick and nice. That s about all the positive things I can say. Portion is small, especially for the price is about 20% - 25% higher than other local Vietnamese restaurants. We ordered the Combo pho is $19 and rib bone pho $20. My husband found the protein in the combo pho was significantly less than other places. And my rib bone pho only comes with 1 bone. Taste of the broth was okay, texture of the noodle is good, not mushy. But the rib bone was extremely chewy and not edible. I had to let the staff know and requested it to be taken off the bill or get a discount. They ended up taking it off the bill. You can see the photo attached. I've been anticipating the arrival of 399 because prior my local decent pho place was Tea Bo but sadly they bit the dust last year. My only confusion so far is with their Egg rolls. On their website they mention using the traditional rice paper wrap but that wasn't the case with our vermicelli bowl. Although disappointed the egg roll tasted good. The grilled pork was packed with flavor, just wished there was a little bit more. 8 out of 10. I wanted to try their Pho oxtail but it was sold out so I went for the next best thing, the combination Pho. The meat ball, tendon and tripe portion was perfect. 2 slices of brisket & approximately 4 tiny pieces of tai was such a let down. My only suggestion would be to increase the price $1 and double the brisket & tai. The broth was the highlight and the herbs and veggies was nicely prepped and fresh. 8 out of 10. In conclusion it's not at the caliber of Pho 79 but for Irvine it's a nice substitute when you get that craving close to home. read more

Where is the peppermint leaf? TIA To? I wished they would've add that. It brings so much flavor. As for the grilled pork? You need to grill it with a more bbq color. The meat was too undercooked. It was missing the charred color and fragrance. I do appreciate the young and friendly staffs. They were friendly and attentive. Price was a bit pricy compared to other similar restaurants, so I was hoping for some larger filled rolls. When I received them and opened the box, the rolls were about the same size as others so a bit sad that I paid $17 for 2 rolls, now hoping the flavor will take it over the top to explain. The price. My first bite I took a piece of shrimp, I saw the shrimp had not been cleaned out, still poop inside the vein, so I spit out what was in my mouth! Couldn't believe it. I was hungry so I cleaned alll the shrimps myself before eating, what a disappointment especially for the price I paid.
