The restaurant is located away from the crowded tourist areas and on our late afternoon visit we easily found a table. Service was excellent and we loved the spinach dip. My wife and I were booked at the Hotel de la Poste. 3rd Block Depot is the hotel's restaurant and bar. We only ate at the restaurant a couple of times for breakfast but enjoyed the bar almost each of the 5 nights we stayed at the hotel. The food was REALLY good especially the beignets we ordered twice. First were the Bananas Foster Beignets! Wow! A day later we ordered a plate of traditional Beignets covered with powdered sugar and served with a side of caramel sauce. Can you decadent and delicious? They were some of the best beignets we tried while in New Orleans. The bar was stocked to the brim and had a very friendly staff to welcome guests and prepare the perfect cocktails. Of course I had to try a Sazerac, the signature cocktail of New Orleans. The Sazerac was the first cocktail to be mixed and served in New Orleans and the United State. 3rd Block Depot's take of the cocktail, "3B Sazerac" was very good. I didn't have anything to compare it to since I had never tried one. My wife and I would grab our cocktails and head out to the hotel's beautiful courtyard. The fried chicken was soooo good! Definitely the highlight of our meal. My husband had the fish which he enjoyed. Our waitress was absolutely hilarious and so much fun to chat with--great service always makes a difference, and she delivered. Since the restaurant is inside a hotel, it wasn't crowded at all, which made for a nice, relaxing dining experience. We were seated right away, our food came out quickly, and we never had to wait for anything. The restaurant was clean, had a somewhat trendy vibe, and overall was a great place to enjoy a meal. The food is delicious and flavorful. The ambiance was casual. The service was great. When we first arrived, it took 2-3 minutes to be seated because the only server, who is also the host, was having a conversation with a customer. The server was friendly; he stated it was his first day after transferring to NOLA. I noticed that our server was very attentive to detail - he even asked if we had any allergies that they needed to be aware of! He even asked if we are OK with our food coming out all at once or to start with appetizers. He checked on us a few times throughout our meal and later started a conversation with us as well. The food was very flavorful. We were surprised that the Crawfish Dip was served with tortilla chips when it states crostini on the menu. The Yakamein was very flavorful. The shredded pork was mildly spicy to a Minnesotan taste bud, we don't do spicy well. I also tried my husband's braised short ribs and everything was flavorful and the meat was tender. I came here to meet with some others ladies for a party. The restaurant had several empty tables when I walked in yet no one acknowledged my presence. Neither the hostess nor the gentleman with her on a Saturday after Mardi Gras at 11:30AM did not acknowledge me as the walked back several times. There was no bartender til 3pm at this time so we could not get drinks as we waited for our entire party to arrive. Mind you had reservations too. The hostess was also the only waitstaff for the entire restaurant and bar. Needless to say, she was not happy about it all. The food was fine. I got breakfast because I thought that could not be messed up. Over easy eggs were overcooked but otherwise ok. Friend got the salmon beignets which were good. We had mimosas which were premixed. Completely forgot to take picture of our food. Overall I thought the experience was only ok. Considering the average cost for each entree was about $17 or more I think there are better places to go. While there two young ladies staying at the hotel wanted to use their hotel credit before they left but were told it would take 30 minutes to be seated again since the hostess had many roles to fulfill. read more

The staff was very rude. We called the establishment to apologize and let them know we would be about 10 minutes late to our reservation and they tell us the kitchen closes at 9:30 so it was no problem (thought they would be super nice after this!). As soon as we walk in the waitress tells us the bartender is "the slowest one she's ever seen" so we ordered drinks and food immediately after sitting down to make everyone's lives easier (even though there were only 2 groups in the whole restaurant including us). The waitress also asked us how old we were and when we answered, she laughed and she side eyed us. We then asked if she would like to see our IDs to confirm to which she said "no I really don't" (thought she was joking but unfortunately she was not). Drinks took 45+ minutes to get back to our table even though 2 of the 7 were glasses of wine. The first two meals got to our table at around 9:45 (over an hour after ordering) and the waitress rudely told us "yeah I had to make y'all's food because the kitchen staff left so be patient" while rolling her eyes when asked how long it would be for the rest to come out. The food was also not good at all. The last 4 meals got to us closer to 10pm so we did not leave the restaurant until after 10:45. Overall horrible service and food especially for the price. The waitress spent more time in the corner loudly complaining to her coworker than providing the service she is being paid for. read more

The interior of 3rd Block caught my eye as I was waking past it, so I made a dinner reservation for two on a Tuesday evening. The walls of the interior consisted of shelves lined with various glowing bottles, which made the restaurant look very modern and elegant. When my friend and I entered the restaurant at the time of our reservation, there were only a couple parties present, but we were seated at a wobbly table. The host himself noted that the table was wobbly, so we were confused as to why we were not just seated at another table, as there were plenty available. We ordered the crawfish dip, crabcakes, chicken breast, gnocchi, and crispy brussel sprouts to share. To our dismay, the food took an entire 50 minutes to come out. While waiting, we even called the host over to confirm whether or not our order had been put in, and he said that he would go and check to make sure. The crawfish dip had colorful tortilla chips with a healthy-sized bowl of the dip and the crabcakes (2) were beautifully presented with a pile of red cabbage slaw in between and an orange sauce drizzled on the plate. The side of brussel sprouts also looked very tasty. In terms of the mains, the abita beer brined chicken breast looked very underwhelming as it was a small piece of chicken in a shallow soup of the cassava root purre and chicken au jus. The gnocchi, however, was a colorful dish with grape tomatoes, butternut squash, and kale. Both my friend and I were huge fans of the crawfish dip and the crispy brussel sprouts. The chicken, as it appeared, was just alright and the bone in the chicken breast was unexpected and made it difficult to eat. The gnocchi was tougher than we expected, so it was probably overcooked and the crab cakes had a slightly weird non-crabby taste to it. Overall, I was a bit disappointed in our experience at 3rd Block. I had high hopes for the restaurant, but many of the dishes did not meet our expectations and the extensive wait for the food to come out despite the lack of a busy restaurant was frustrating. if I could give this place six stars for the food, I would definitely done that. It was one of the best gumbos I've had absolutely perfect. I also had their seared peach salad, which was absolutely perfect for what I wanted. My daughter got the bacon burger and fries which she said was very very good and the fries. I was also curious to see if it had the same feel as Sobou when it was in the space. The space is still cool looking and inviting. Food-wise, the dishes were good. The short ribs were nice and tender and the meat pies had a lovely pastry crust. I wasn't too thrilled with the crab cakes for the price....when you look at the photo, they were definitely on the small side for the price. The Doctor did like the Abita Beer Brined Chicken Breast with charred okra, cassava puree and a kale chip. And the King Cake was a beautiful presentation. The big issue for me was the service. The woman that waited on us was very nice and she was from Wisconsin. It was nice to connect with her. The problem was that I think that the only people working the entire restaurant were her and another gentleman, so it took awhile to get drinks and food. Not sure why the restaurant would have so little staff serving on a busy night, but for me it messed with the overall experience. And I felt bad for the folks working. Dinner with friends on a Wednesday night. I started with the "Hooch of the Day" for a drink. It was supposed to be a "cosmo-y" type drink, but that is not how I would have described it. Overall, I left feeling like the restaurant has a great deal to be improved here, but some dishes are incredibly good! First off, I have to commend the service - every staff member, from the host to the server, are incredibly kind and friendly. However, the level of service here is not up to standards for a nice restaurant. They failed to clear our table after the starter, and did not replace our cutlery. The table had scrapes and was not wiped either. In regards to the food, we ordered the brined chicken breast, yakamein, slow braised short ribs, and gumbo. I would rate the last two dishes a 5, but the first two a 1. The chicken breast was dry and the skin was not remotely crispy. Please don't order the yakamein. But I am surprised to say the gumbo was delicious and the short braised ribs were a hit with all family members. The mashed potatoes were savory, and the ribs were incredibly tender and fell apart with a fork. We got beignets for dessert - another 5/5!! read more

We arrived early evening and were hungry so we thought we'd just give this place at the hotel a try. We couldn't have been more pleased with our meal. We shared a citrus salad and blackened chicken pasta. Both were absolutely delicious and I would recommend both if you like those type dishes. We also shared the bananas foster beignets for dessert. Both dishes were "starters"; small on portion size but priced like brunch entrees. The Muffuletta Panzanella is a salad, with field greens, swiss cheese, salami, ham, an olive relish and croutons. There were a few bits of thinly sliced meat and cheese on top of the lettuce. Surprisingly the olive relish wasn't very flavorful and the salad needed something more in the way of a dressing. The best part of the salad was the tasty croutons. The 3rd Block Hot Chicken had 4 small bites of chicken thigh and a couple pieces of very fatty pork belly, on top of the gouda grits. Well this place was a hot mess tonight and it's hard to know where to start. So I'll start with the gumbo. It was actually quite good. Served with potato salad instead of rice, it had a nice rich flavor and lots of sausage to make it a hearty example. Really enjoyed it. But then there was, well, almost everything else. Like service that made us wait to see a waiter for 15 minutes after seating. Or the hour in between courses. Or the water glass that I couldn't get filled. And then there was my main dish: an oyster risotto. This was the oddest risotto. It was like a cornmeal kinda dried polenta or something. It just was bland, dry and not good. I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The fried oyster were fine with it but this was a total miss. I can't even remember the last time I ordered something this inedible. Tough to say on a place that is striving to be so much better. The gulf fish from my dining companion was far better. Wish I had ordered that instead. We did start with a crawfish dip that was fine and a meat pies that were like empanadas but just not as good. It's a nice decor instead but our room was very loud. The acoustics only amplified it with one loud table. It's tough to recommend this place given the hit or miss nature of dinner. We were in the Quarter and at that point of the day where we wanted to rest our feet and grab a happy hour drink. I do love a good hotel bar and this city has no shortage of them, but 3rd Block seems especially inviting, with its bar set back and plenty of seating at it/around it in a lounge setting. The bartender is super friendly. It's quiet and peaceful (at least at 6pm it was). I'll report back with my second visit... this place begs a return. read more

Walking into the restaurant, the vibes are immaculate. The decor is beautiful, intriguing and engaging. Naturally, we highly anticipated our meals, but they unfortunately weren't anything special. The Natchitoches meat pies weren't very flavourful. The debris flies were subpar (some might say something was wrong with the accompanying sauce). The fish was good, however a little too salty. The pork chop, however, was very good. It was paired with such a YUMMY sauce. Definitely a highlight of the meal. Ultimately although the decor was fantastic and the pork chop delicious, the rest of the meal paired with the high prices didn't make this dining experience worth it to me. The service for NYE was extremely poor. It was not properly managed at all. Arrived on time for reservation to be told our table was not ready when half the restaurant was empty. Went to the bar to grab a drink while waiting patiently. No one ever came to us after 30 minutes. Husband went back and they said they could find us when table was ready and gave it away. The bar is literally just steps from the hostess stand. Finally sat 45 minutes after reservation to wait to be greeted by server. He appeared to be running lost tables himself. Waited forever for drinks. In fact got first course before drinks. When food arrived husband's course was cold (Seafood Gumbo and Cornbread) seafood gumbo had no seafood just the shell of a crab. My meal was like warm but tasty. Ordered more drinks that never came and husband went to bar to order new drinks, so server took them off the bill. Final straw of disappointment was going to the ladies room before leaving. While using the restroom, someone outside knocked a male, I responded to let him know I was inside...he still came in and I kept speaking to let him know I was in there and saying hello with no response. He continue to pick up the restroom and take trash out while I was using the restroom. It was the most uncomfortable situation ever. Told my husband who asked for manager, who had already left for the evening. This was not even 10:30pm. Reviews allowed me to book originally and for an evening like this everything was a disappointment. Will continue to put this info out there as the service was unacceptable. read more
