Lovely local organic coffee house... despite it's confusing name. It is at the intersection of Blount and Martin. They stay open until 7pm generally changing to an evening wine bar. I have only been there during the day. Great coffee and tea options, and Kombucha as well. Owner Christine is new to area and has newly purchased business about ~6 months ago. First and foremost she is about customer service. She has a loyal following for quality food, drink and service. Example of customer service: Being of Indian decent, I asked of she can doctor the Chai to a more authentic flavor than all the rest of the shops with the super sweet syrup in milk. She made a concerted effort and now I order it instead. Definitely worth a visit and also for a hang with friends. Small coffee shop on the corner with lots of natural light. More modern and industrial vibe with a menu that crosses from day to night, as the full coffee bar also serves alcohol. "A robot made my coffee!" I was seeking out a few good coffee shops online before coming to Raleigh, but 42 & Lawrence somehow got overlooked in my searches. When I walked by, I saw this crazy coffee contraption and stopped inside to see what it was. Yes, it's computer-ized pour over coffees. I was caffeined out that day, so mentioned out loud that I might come back the next day to try a coffee. The barista heard me and told me it was $2 pourovers on Wednesday, so obviously that got me to commit. I came back and had the pour over. It was a fun experience to watch, but at the end my coffee was still just a coffee. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I've had some pretty amazing pourovers in my life and this wasn't one of them. Maybe I'll have to make another visit in the future to try another bean to see if I can be wowed up to 5*. But they got very close, very very close... read more

These guys are great at taking feedback & working it in to make their customers' needs - and it shows! I love their large nitro cold brew on tap, it's so frothy & has great fruity notes! You can even buy a 4pk of Larry's nitro cold brew in cans there too... or singles for on-the-go with other juices too. Their draft latte was good, but they couldn't quite get the CO2/NO2 mix right so they took it off the menu... but their hot lattes or iced lattes are equally good- if not better! I like that you can also grab a Boulted Bread croissant or other local pastries there too. It was warming and clean inside with a beautiful view of the streets outside their big windows. I love that they serve their coffee in mugs if you don't get it to go so I can see their pretty latte art. The way they decorated was just really cool and made for great atmosphere. Kind of a nutty flavor on top where the creme rises with froth. If your thing is syrup flavored weak medium roast latte's, then this is not your place. I had a great experience here. The vibe is calm and inviting. I went at 9:45 on a Saturday and there only a few customers who had set up for what looked like an all day study session. I got an iced pour over (Ethiopian) and I was very satisfied. The notes listed on the menu were prevalent - I recommend waiting 4-5minutes for a good iced pour over! Lastly, the atmosphere of succulents and white tile were in good company with the jazz standards being played through the speakers. I stopped in on a Sunday morning for a nice pick me up! This is a really cool coffee shop. They have a very hip vibe and atmosphere. The shop is small, but light, open and clean. The designs are fresh and new. It is surrounded by windows, so a lot of outside lighting comes in. I had a quick espresso. I didn't see much to eat, so I decided to go somewhere else. We always loved grabbing a quick coffee since opening, but they don't do any decaf drip or a pour over. The drinks we've bought the last 2 visits we waited over 20 mins for and we're wrong. Today was our last visit. We ordered 2 of the 5 of their signature drinks, a dairy free/decaf version of the headless horseman and the PSL. I caught her as she was pouring regular milk, which she proceeded to throw out. They she started on the headless horseman again and poured the mix in both cups so we walked away with a headless horseman and a psl/ headless horseman combo sugar bomb. When you pay $7+ for a specialty coffee, you expect more. Such awesome coffee beans and atmosphere, but unless you are looking for a long wait and questionable end product, I'd steer away. read more

As for service, cleanliness, and coffee this place is great. Good atmosphere. The reason it is not 5 stars is I recently bought the unicorn lemonade because I wanted less caffeine. The person that prepared it did not do so correctly and put too much butterfly tea in the mix. Because of this it was incredibly bitter and upset my stomach. An easy mistake though. I understand this is mostly a coffee place. Also not that you need to ask for a key to the restroom in order to go. That is a slight inconvenience if they are busy. read more

Great place to duck away in during a rainstorm! I met some friends for lunch down the street and we wanted to walk around but because of the pouring rain we decided to try out 42 & Lawrence instead, and I'm glad we did! I had a delicious caramel latte and my cousin ordered an Earl Gray "plus" tea (or something like that). The only thing I found surprising was that they did not offer regular Earl Gray tea, but this tea had lavender notes which were pretty nice. As a group we shared a number of the pastries, which were super tasty! For those looking for study spots it was relatively empty on a Saturday afternoon and gets great natural light. Great coffee place - definitely recommend it - been here twice now for their coffee soda! Place is located downtown but quietly tucked away on a street corner. The interior is really vibey but not too over the top - probably could use one or two seating locations that aren't just window benches. The service is really helpful and polite and they let you sample what they have on tap as well. Like I said before I have ordered the pomegranate coffee soda twice now - it is addicting! My cousin also ordered a hibiscus/basil/lemonade which was also really light but packed a lot of flavor. In the hot south if you are walking downtown Raleigh - grabbing a drink from here will definitely quench your thirst! read more

This coffee shop is underneath Skyhouse, one of the tallest apartment buildings in downtown Raleigh. Very clean design inside with lots of great natural light which always keeps me in a smiley mood. The woman who greeted me was very friendly and willing to list some items not on the menu yet (like cold/iced options) including iced latte on draft. Yes, on draught! She gave me a sample - wasn't for me but very good if you're curious. Instead she suggested coffee with their homemade spiced chocolate syrup. It was perfect. And they have skim milk, which I love. It was about $5 and change. A little on the pricey side but they're going for upscale brews and vibe here. I asked for the wifi code and they said they encourage "offline working" and have books to read sitting on shelves too. Which is cute and all - but let's face it - people need wifi to do work these days. So I'm not sure how long they'll stick to that policy before they cave and find it may bring more business if they have wifi. Anyway...overall good place. I would definitely go back for a treat. Not a place to go to daily but definitely could be a once a week treat for myself, who is a freelancer working from home, who likes to get out once in a while during a work day! read more

Fresh pressed juices, a locally brewed kombucha bar and house made coffee shrub soda round out the standard coffee and espresso offerings by talented baristas. Well worth mentioning is their nitro latte, a deliciously foamy treat made by compressing milk and espresso with nitrogen to give it a mouthfeel and a frothy head similar to a stout beer. Pastries by the local and highly delectable lucettegrace round out the carefully curated selection of high end nibbles and sips. Be prepared to eat on premises or leave a small refundable deposit for lucettegrace's fancy glass dessert tumblers. While seating is limited in this small corner spot, they have all the amenities including a few outdoor tables from which you can watch the busy downtown world going by. Give the people a choice. And 42 & Lawrence did give the people a choice by joining the crowded downtown Raleigh coffee bar scene, across the street from City Market. What do they offer, apart from a clean, smart interior that is a mix between a laboratory and a Victorian hotel lobby with white marble tops with sleek chromed taps that peek out from the below-counter "Modbar" boilers. There are 14 counter stools, plus four more around the lone tiny table here. So, this is more of a take-a-break place than hang-out-and-write-your-novel joint. I like the sharp hard surfaces, but I can see how it would get echo-ey and loud in here. Come here if you like Larry's Beans - which is served at nearby Lucettegrace, Busy Bee, Level Up, Buku, Humble Pie, and Daily Planet Cafe. Larry's espresso beans are more heavily roasted to give you a more dark chocolate, toast, and earthy taste that is heavy on bass notes. This is the more "standard" style of espresso that most people will think "yeah, this is how coffee should taste." Think more Pete's Coffee and Starbucks in style, but better. This contrasts with beans that are lighter roasted that allow more cherry/citrus/floral tones to peek through - like what you get from Counter Culture beans. 42 & Lawrence grind is also a bit finer - so your drink will be (perhaps because the place is new) super flavorful, but slightly muddy. I like it this way, but others may not. It will be a matter of preference. Some will prefer Larry's, Some prefer Counter Culture. Some like other beans. The angle to this place, apart from Larry's is the nitrogen cold pours. Cold storage and processing enables more yummy coffee aromatics & volatiles to be extracted into the coffee while leaving some of the more bitter elements behind. This enables a coffee to be more nuanced beans (like those fruit/floral beans I talk about before). If you process it under Nitrogen, the flavor won't oxidize as fast. I have yet to try the cold processed ones - but this is the gist. But you should come here if you enjoy a great big dark chocolate bar of an espresso-based drink. I am sitting here at work enjoying a coffee that I literally finished an hour ago because the wonderful coffee flavor is still in my mouth. read more

Couldn't be more excited to try this place finally and couldn't be more disappointed. Why? Service, service, service. Plus the coffee wasn't very good... The regular coffee was so bad we dumped it out. I like specialty drinks and ordered a latte. The staff gave me a mocha and when they told me that and I questioned a mocha when I ordered a latte, they told me it was the same thing. Umm, I don't think. Needless to say, it was a mocha AKA chocolate and not very good. I think I was most disappointed with the "I'm better than my customers" attitude of the staff and how rude they are when I questioned if I had the right drink. We arrived around noon on a Sunday morning and there was a fairly long line, however the two baristas in the store were super friendly and able to get us served super quickly. In their defense, they say they would like people to "interact." I have lots of feedback that I could ramble out on that, but I'll have it so a "face to face non-digital" conversation here at 42nd & Lawrence if you'd like to hear it. For me, I'll think twice about coming here because I won't be able to work. If I want to read, that's great. Overall, I respect their decision to keep the place "old school." No ambient music playing in the background. I've only been once, so maybe it's different, but I definitely noticed. Oh wait, it just kicked on. Someone must be looking over my shoulder. I had an espresso and a pour over of the Experiment 92 (a washed Ethiopian). The espresso had good crema, but honestly it just tasted like the beans were over roasted, too dark for my taste. Not a huge fan of mechanical "pour overs" and this one in particular was just weak and watered down (not sure of their ratio) but just very weak in any distinguishable flavor. Great seating area and bar along with plenty of windows for light. I'd honestly come back just for the seating area and WiFi, but not the greatest coffee experience. Fantastic location. The best locally roasted coffee. The finest locally baked sweets. Warm, friendly staff. Take your time, ask for a pour-over. It's going to be worth it, I swear. I was SO EXCITED to finally try this place out! But be warned, customer service was SO WEIRD. The lady at the counter was not helpful and not personable. She may have been having a bad day, but...a barista's attitude really sets the tone for a shop. The draft latte was what we tried, and it was tasty, though a bit small for being a bit over $5. My friend enjoyed a pastry, but I was sad to see there were no gluten-free options. I love Larry's Beans a lot, but I don't know yet if this shop will be added to my regular rotation.
