We were moving a relative to the Rockville area from NJ so decided to use a local mover. I was impressed by how Josh handled the call and just decided to go with 495 Movers on a hunch. They handled the insurance and scheduling promptly and correctly. And the guys they sent, Santo and Rodi, were GREAT! They showed up on time at both ends and were incredibly professional, patient, obliging, and quick. When a couple of times we mistakenly let them move some items onto the truck that were to be left behind -- no problem or attitude; they moved them back out right away and kept going. Our estimate of how much we were moving was pretty far off the mark, it turned out. They said that they would have brought a bigger truck. When these two were finished, there was -- no exaggeration -- probably an inch or two between the stuff and the back doors of the truck. I DO NOT KNOW HOW THEY DID IT. It was like a giant puzzle that they put together with no false moves. And they provided plenty of packing material for us to do some of our own packing. I was told (by a professional organizer) that an IKEA unit we had would probably not survive the trip. It did. They reinstalled it, too. They took apart and put back together a table. Can I give NO stars? After Nate offered to give me the refund I have been asking for in exchange for deleting my bad reviews online, instead replacing those reviews with five-star reviews, I snapped. I went to Small Claims Court, and the District saw fit to issue a judgement in my favor against 495. Especially because they never even showed to court on multiple court dates. Researching my case, I discovered all sorts of irregularities in 495 Mover's business paperwork: their Registered Agent is a dry cleaner's in a strip mall on Bladensburg Road, for instance. Illegal? No. Dodgy? Well...I'll let DCRA figure that out. Also, be aware that this business also operates as Montgomery County Movers and Bethesda Moving, sharing either a physical address, phone numbers, or COO/CEO names (not to mention pictures of 495 trucks on all three websites). read more

I had the this company move my stuff from the POD complex in Manassas to my new apartment in Arlington VA. I spoke with several movers and these guys weren't the cheapest nor were they the most expensive. We originally scheduled for 10:00am, but they called and asked if we could move earlier so we set the time for 7:30 am. The POD place is sort of hidden off the road, and both of our GPS units delivered us to the local police station about a half mile from the where we needed to be! So I cannot fault them for being late. Three movers emptied my POD and loaded the truck quickly and efficiently. My stuff was already packed, and I had a some left over packing supplies which they used. They packed two sofa's by wrapping them with blankets and that plastic wrap stuff. The packing job was impressive, a much better job than I could have done myself. The price for packing the two pieces came out to $136 in materials. We discussed the price of materials and came away with something we could both live with. When I move again I'll order supplies from Uline.com or Costco and use the movers expertise to pack and move my stuff. I will use this company again on my next move in six months. They were reasonably priced, and treated my stuff well. Nothing was broken, they were late but I understood why because my GPS let me down too. They worked well together as a team and did not waste any time. My complaints were addressed in a reasonable manner. Let's face it moving is stressful. Here are a few things I learned about movers. The movers insurance covers sixty cents per pound for damaged goods. Your renters insurance doesn't cover your stuff while it is being moved. If you have something dear to you pack it and move it yourself. Ask for extra insurance sometimes the mover will include it at no extra charge. The movers are not slaves. Have some drinks and snacks around to keep them gassed up. For some reason movers like to work early in the day. So if your apartment building charges you to move in and out schedule the early times. Ask if the people moving your stuff are employees of the company or temporary day laborers. If you aren't sure about how much stuff you have, and how much it will cost to pack it up, have the mover come out and take a look. They think about our stuff in terms of cubic feet and pounds. We think about our stuff in terms of family treasures, and replacement costs. Don't skimp on the packing materials. read more

Please don't use this company. I should have read the negative reviews first, but I didn't. I can abide one or two things, but jacking up the price of the deposit without a single warning, trying to get me to sign a sales agreement without a price noted, forgetting to move an entire section of my house, damaging property without telling me, leaving trash at my old residence, and calling me a liar to my face is too much. Full story below... My family's experience with 495 movers was not pleasant. After a sewage backup, my renter's insurance covered a move under my plan. Decided to give 495 a try. Spoke with Josh on 27 June 2015, and the first words I said were "I am authorized a move through an insurance claim, and I've never had to file a claim before where I'm using a moving company; can you help walk me through this process?" He quoted me $200 an hour which was all-inclusive, accounting for packing materials, manpower, and the fuel costs. He then asked if I would be able to pay a deposit equal to one hour of work ($200). I told him I wasn't able to pay the deposit, that's why I was filing a claim through my insurance. He put me on hold. When he came back, he said before he could "lock-in" the date, I would have to pay a deposit. I could make the deposit on 30 June for a pickup on 1 July, after I got paid. Josh said that was fine. 30 June; I called back, but now the deposit was $400. Why the increase - it's a short notice deposit and move date so now it's doubled. That's fine, I would have to pay my $500 deductible regardless. Josh thanked me and specifically told me on the phone "Since you're going through insurance, when the crew gets done with the move they will hand you an invoice to pass to your insurance company." I thanked him and hung up. (total estimate=$2,600) On 1 July, the moving crew called me with a few minutes to spare for their arrival window and asked for further directions to my residence. The driver was lazy and I don't remember his name, but the two other crewmembers, Cisco and Charles were ok. I showed them around, and the driver had me sign the initial block for insurance or not, and attempted to get me to sign the other block where the move is over and done with. The segment which indicates the hourly rate, crew size, number of trucks, and the overall estimate of the move were all blank. I did not sign it for obvious reasons. (the driver was quick to fill out that he arrived 15 minutes earlier than he actually did though) While doing a walkthrough, I noted several gouges in the drywall on the staircase. Both the driver and Charles watched me take pictures, but neither of them said a word about it. When completed, the driver whips out his folder and informs me I owe them money and cash or check would be fine. I was only supposed to get an invoice to send to the insurance company. The driver says he doesn't know anything about it, and I could pay with a credit card with a 5% surcharge tacked on. I tell them the insurance company is supposed to take care of the rest, per Josh's instructions. Charles offers to call Motie, and Motie tells me the same thing. I inform him of the entire conversation I had with Josh. Motie tells me I'm supposed to pay for the move, and my insurance reimburses me for the cost, and his guys can't leave without payment. He suggests I pay for the move minus the 5% surcharge, and he'll settle with my insurance carrier. The next day, 2 July, Josh calls and he says that I never told him it was an insurance claim. I remind him of our first conversation. He persisted that I said nothing about insurance. So I quote the call verbatim, and he's the one who informed me about the deposit, and the invoice to be sent to my insurance. He asked for my carrier's number and I gave it. Josh hung up and called them, then called me back and said everything would be straightened out when I received the checks from my insurance. He asked if I could pay for the move now or would I have to wait for the checks. I told him I would have to wait. Josh sounded disappointed, mentioned again that I never told him it was an insurance claim, and that he would call me back within a couple days for a status update. Since starting unpacking, I've noted several things. They didn't move my computer monitor, my wife's mixer, took apart her vanity but did not reinstall it (mirror supports got tucked in a separate box), corn starch exploded in the pantry box due to crappy packing, brand new toy box and coffee table got scratched up, they didn't pack up ANYTHING from my full bath, they packed kitchen utensils in a used mop bucket, and they left trash at my old place. There's other things missing, but this is too long now. On 10 July, 2015, called Josh to make the payment. I tell him I haven't heard back on the wall gouges or the damaged property. He sent me an email with the information afterwards. They also charged the 5% surcharge, but they did process a refund. Bad experience overall. read more

We reviewed multiple moving companies out of Maryland area, and out of the three we looked at, 495 Movers was the fastest in response, as we were needing a last minute moving quote. Over the phone and e-mail, we spoke to John about the type of items being moved, and he sent over a quote shortly after. 3 movers arrived early to our appointment time, and they moved swiftly from packing to moving items to the truck. They took great care of the items, however since we were only putting them in storage, we won't know for sure if there is any damage during the transport until later. Special shout out to Jose, who managed the team very well and each mover worked well independently and as a team. Be sure to review the estimate thoroughly, as first time movers may find some verbiage slightly confusing. However as we have moved several times already, John (sales) and we were on the same page on expectation and execution. We would recommend 495 movers to others. **Tips: make sure you understand their damage policy of $0.60/lb and up to $50 per item. I scheduled 495 movers to do my move from Rockville to the Tyson's area. They were 45 minutes late, but made up for it in their customer service, speed, and careful handling of my items. They wrapped all of my furniture with blankets for free and just shrink wrapped my mattress for a small fee. Of course, traffic was terrible heading south in the morning, but I was not charged extra travel time. My entire move was under 3 hours, but I agreed to pay the minimum anyways which is the 110/hr x 3 hours. I was not going to fight it as I agreed to that knowing. The woman who handled my quote, Tyeisha, was great and dealt with my moving concerns and pre-move jitters. The quote was accurate and there were no surprises. The only thing they did not mention on their website (I did not see it at least) was a security deposit of $80.00. This is made when you confirm your move. It is not refundable which is the only downside. I would use them again. read more

The rate was lower than other companies, but unfortunately they seem to drag out the time as much as possible, and it ends up costing about the same as anywhere else. On the one hand, they were thorough and took relatively good care of stuff. On the other hand, they seemed to take a long time with preparations -- carefully wrapping in blankets and tape -- that the whole move took ages and cost far more than I expected. Also, I was told I would get three guys. The two movers were hardworking and friendly. The manager guy spent most of the time talking on his cell phone instead of doing much moving. The price is probably about the same as the bigger movers, ie. not that cheap. The service was okay I guess. There were a few things they were not well prepared for. But overall it was disappointing to have the move take far longer than I wanted, and for it to cost much more than I expected. My only issue, and it's a small one, is that while I used their boxes and checked which room the boxes should go, those instructions were only occasionally followed. Too bad that the 495 Beltway, itself, isn't nearly as efficient as 495 Movers!!! We originally arranged Colonial Van Lines (Florida) to move us. At the very last minute, Colonial Van Lines abandoned us!!! They told us on the day of the move that they couldn't move us. Luckily, we got a referral to 495 Movers from JK Movers. Moti from 495 Movers came to our house on the very same day to bail us out, after Colonial Van Lines dropped the ball. After a walk around and quote that morning, his team showed up within a couple hours to start packing and loading! Our experience with 495 was a little disappointing. We were given an estimate of approx. $4200 and the total move would be performed in one day. After loading our furnishings the crew decided it would be too late to unload so they wanted to unload the following day. We were then charged another hour of travel time and it appeared they took their time to get at least several hours added to the original estimate. Most of our items was being placed in storage so there was no unwrapping or reset up of beds, etc... The crew left for an hour for lunch but only deleted a half hour from the time log. read more

I used 495 Movers to relocate from Baltimore, Maryland to San Diego, California in the summer of 2013. A cross-country move like this is stressful under the best circumstances, and 495 Movers made it an even worse experience. Several boxes and a set of shelves were lost (or stolen), their contract employees that delivered my belongings were rude bullies, and the management/contacts at 495 Movers were dismissive and rude once they had my money. On initially contacting Jacob at 495 Movers in June of 2013, he was very helpful and understanding in helping to plan my move. They offered a comparable estimate for moving my two-bedroom apartment across country. The movers who arrived to pack and load my belongings were also very polite and competent. Basically: when 495 Movers still wants your money and your business, they will go the extra mile to make you feel safe and comfortable. This treatment will change once they have your belongings and you are under contract. Upon delivery of my belongings in San Diego, the subcontractors were rude and dismissive. At first they refused to unload the truck without additional cash paid directly to them, because my new apartment was set back from the street and behind another building. This situation had been made very clear by me BEFORE delivery was attempted, or even scheduled, and was within the maximum distance as noted on my contract. The subcontractors ultimately agreed, after they failed to shake me down for more cash. They remained very loud, rude and aggressive throughout the unloading process, and when I contacted Jacob at 495 Movers directly, during the delivery, he said only that he was "sorry for the inconvenience." The aggressive nature of these subcontractors caused me to make a very serious mistake: I failed to account for every box on the checklist as it was being delivered. I felt bullied and intimidated by the movers, and I felt like Jacob at 495 Movers was no longer my ally in this process. After the movers left, with my apartment in disarray, I realized that two boxes of comic books were not present, and that a set of four shelves from a cabinet were also missing. The comic books valued more than $200, and the missing shelves made the cabinet unusable. I contacted Jacob at 495 Movers about the missing items, and he sent a terse email directing me to CSI, where I could make a claim and seek damages. My claims were denied in total, because it was my responsibility to note the missing items upon delivery. This is all very legal. 495 Movers has acted within the bounds of our contract. But my items are still missing -- comic books with monetary and sentimental value, and a set of shelves -- and 495 Movers will no doubt continue to treat customers with dismissive disdain once money has changed hands, and will most likely continue to employ subcontractors that care nothing for the objects being delivered, or for the customers already undergoing a stressful moving experience. 495 Movers, their employee Jacob Kuhn, and the subcontractors who delivered most but not all of my possessions, let me down and ignored me when I sought a resolution. Potential movers: they are interested solely in your money, and not your peace of mind. Do NOT employ 495 Movers, and know that while they might treat you with respect at the beginning of your move, once they have been paid, you will no longer be a concern of theirs. I repeat: do not use 495 Movers for your relocation, local or cross-country. They're dismissive and rude, at best. Very disappointed with 495 movers!!! BEWARE - they are a SCAM. I urge you to not use them. We had movers already scheduled for our mover, but after doing additional research I got nervous by the movers we had selected. This is when I saw the great reviews for 495 movers. I called them and spoke to Josh. Josh said they would be an in-person quote for our move, which the other movers did not do. He explained to me that by doing this it would provide us with a realistic quote because others movers constantly come in over their quotes resulting in the customer paying more than they thought. This all sounded reasonable to me (boy was I wrong). Moti came and did the in-person estimate with my husband. My husband walked him all over our house to include the garage and shed. Moti kept saying to my husband over and over that our house "would be an easy move." He told my husband they would need two trucks. They sent the estimate, which was double of what we would pay with the mover we had scheduled. However, in talking to Josh he explained how they would wrap and protect our belongings and take full inventory. We decided to go with 495 movers especially since they had to move us out, store our stuff for a week, and then deliver it to our new house, and we thought paying the extra would give us comfort on the moving day. The morning of our move got off to a bad start when they only brought one truck and the movers said we would need two. We called back to the office and they said the quote was only based on one truck and for two we would have to pay more per hour. We had a back and forth with the office especially since Moti, their boss, told us we would need two at the time of the estimate. They finally brought another truck. It took them 12 hours to move the stuff out of our old house. This is MUCH longer than they had estimated. We have three small children and two dogs, and it was very hard and complicated having doing the logistics. Thank goodness for good friends and family when the movers took hours longer than they had predicted. The actual guys doing the move I have no complaint with. It was hot and they were hustling! They were nice and friendly and I do appreciate their hard work. When we called back to discuss how they were already close to the estimate, Josh said not to worry and when they drop the stuff at our new house in a week we would work something out and to CALL him when we go to pay. For the move into the new house, I confirmed FOUR times with 495 movers that they would be there between 1030 and 1100, as we settled that morning at 930. They called at 0745 in the morning and said they were about to leave. I, again, reminded them we had a confirmed time and they could not come earlier. 495 movers decided then to put them on a new job and they did not get to our house until after 1pm. When we called OVER AND OVER again on why they were late, no one could tell us. One of the reps even admitted that they screwed up. So....when they FINALLY get to our house, it then takes them another 8 hours to move us in. It is dark now by the time they get done and, again, we have three small children. They broke a crib, despite all the hours wrapping, and we are missing the tiles for two outside tables. When it comes to payment time, Josh cannot be reached. Luis talks to my husband and has to call Moti (what a crap show!) and they decide to only take off $250 but to call the next day and we would work something more out (see a pattern?) They are now over 1K+ their estimate. The estimate Josh and Moti assured us would be correct. My husband tired and holding our crying baby, paid them. We called the next day....no answer. We left messages, no call back. I put a stop on the check. The next day and the day after, we called and called. Finally, they return our call 4 days later. They tell us that the guys worked those hours and we need to pay them. However, they were the ones that royally messed up our move! We decided to pay them, but $1155 over the estimate. They made our move SO much more stressful than it had to be. I could not believe by going through these movers and agreeing to pau double what the other company quoted us, we would have such a horrible experience. I urge you all NOT to believe the good reviews as they are likely false and hold this company accountable by not giving them your business. read more

We are very pleased with our recent move with 495 Movers. They were prompt, careful, friendly and so easy to work with. Our moving consultant Patrick came and provided an accurate estimate and helped us understand what to expect, all of the costs and how to prepare. We had not moved in almost 30 years. Autumn in the office kept us informed of plans, helped us get extra boxes and packing material on short notice and was prompt at answering our questions. We packed our small items ourselves so the move was primarily disassembling furniture and packing it along with loading all our boxes safely on the truck. As the Chief Logistics Executive of one of the embassies in Washington DC, I decided to use the services of 495 movers during the annual AIPAC convention. From their early arrival to their late night departure, every procedure they made, every interaction with the embassy personnel, and every item they prepared for storage and movement was done with courtesy, extreme efficiency, and tireless diligence. The crew leader, Tom vinocur, coordinated the work sequence and transportation of our valued goods in a great manner. There was never any wasted time or movements. All packing material free, Movers were very personable and friendly and very efficient and professional in prepping the furniture for the move. Everything was unloaded and placed where we requested. UPDATE: Wanted to provide an update that upon reading my review the customer service team has been proactive and responsive and adjusted some of our charges to reflect that we only had 2 persons at delivery. Thank you to Monica and her efforts to get this resolved. Company is very responsive until they make a sale (*note that the actual movers were wonderful*) and then there is a steep drop off in communication - radio silence! I was very disappointed with the communication and lack of professionalism with the ops team during our long distance move to Chicago on 8/6-8/8. I have now tried multiple times, with multiple persons, to have a discussion of what went wrong. I was promised return calls and never heard anything, thus the reason for this review. For the expensive price tag of a pack and move, you can find a company that actually responds to your questions and concerns! Our issues were as follows: (1) Not at all proactive with communication. The day before delivery, the company reached out to tell us there was a delay with our delivery. We were understanding and were promised an update between 9-10am the next morning, which we never received. At noon, after calling 10-12 times and trying multiple extensions, I finally reached someone who was able to provide an update. (2) In our agreement, 495 Movers promised us 3-4 delivery persons for unloading in Chicago. This is a main reason we chose 495 movers. However, only 2 movers were at the delivery end of our move. The delivery was late (as described above) and had fewer people than promised so it took well into the evening. We reached out to customer service, and to our sales rep Josh (twice before getting a response!), for a resolution - or at the very least an understanding of why this happened. We were very clear with our concerns. Josh promised a response from him or someone else at the company the next day. 4 days later, still haven't heard a peep. read more

I went with 495 Movers because of their outstanding review online: google and Angies list. I did have to get direct delivery because I was moving from MD to TN and it seemed no one else was moving in this direction. I paid about $5000 for this move of just a one bedroom. Yes, pricey for just one person with very little but I did do my research. Some quotes were higher and most were lower but after much comparison it came down to timing, budget, and reviews. Spoiler, I will never base my final decision on reviews again. This was my first experience and I would not recommend 495 Movers to anyone based on my experience with them compared to other people's experience with other companies. At the time of pick up, the two movers were very efficient and secured my belongings very well. Upon arrival nothing was broken or out of place. So what did they do wrong? 1) They did arrive a day late without conveying this information to me. I found out it was because they found another person who was moving to NC. Maybe I don't understand the whole direct delivery concept, but I thought my belongings would be the only things on the truck. Additionally, since my stuff was sharing a truck with someone else's the cost of the trip should have been split and at this point is it still considered direct delivery!? I called the manager and he explained they would arrive the following day but didn't disclose why they came late. I acquired this information through a conversation with the driver. 2) At unloading, there was one mover in uniform and the other was a guy in flip flops with random clothes on. I asked him where he came from and said TN. In other words, the "professional" mover hired someone off the street in my neighborhood to help him move my things. I have a few personal things wrong with scenario. A) This person is a stranger in my home who lives in neighborhood b) this stranger now knows not only where I live but what I have in my apartment. Although he seemed like a nice person I do not feel comfortable as a woman living alone to be put into this situation. On the 495 Movers website they state that their movers are professionals with background checks, etc to give the consumer ultimate stress free relocation experience this was not the case for me. 3) I had to request that the mover help me put the bed together but he did assemble the recliner and did place everything where I wanted it. Everything else I had to assemble myself (coffee table and stools). Once all items were in the apartment, it was paperwork time. I signed and the mover asked "you're paying with cash right?" I responded no per our conversation when you picked up my things I stated I was paying with money order. He then asks if I have any cash because he wanted to pay flip flop boy. I said no I have no money. I just hope flip flop boy got paid and doesn't come knocking on my door. 4) He asked if I wanted to see the truck and I said ok. After looking at the truck he steps in ready to leave and I said there are still unpacked boxes and trash all over my apartment. I even fetched a box with the plastic wrap and paper and the driver says "we don't take trash". There were multiple 495 Mover boxes plastic wrapping, paper, all over my apartment. Including a few boxes left unpacked with the fabric furniture pads in them! Now I'm stuck with this mess and probably need to hire a service to get rid of it. In my experience this is not a customer service driven work ethic. The movers have a lot to improve on. Every time I called to speak to manager they were friendly and nice, although the phone connection seems to cut in and out sometimes, but that mindset to spread on all levels of the work place. Also the company does pride themselves on using recycled packing materials but the mover was not willing to take the boxes back with him shows that sustainability is not a priority with company. Even if I paid for those boxes, at the end of the day, it's their name on it. The state of TN does not have recycling streams in most apartment complexes from what I've seen, unless you go to recycling plant. If a mover needs help he/she should be able to go to their superior and ask for more assistance. In my opinion there should always be two people no matter the load. It would have been a lawsuit if flip flop boy got hurt carrying my things up the steps and I am not picking up that tab. read more

We were very satisfied with a recent move from Maryland to Vermont. Eugene answered all my questions on the phone, and the move on both ends happened exactly as he said it would. The three movers that came were very polite and pleasant during what can be a stressful time. They wrapped, moved, and unwrapped all items very well, and nothing was damaged. The delivery even occurred a day earlier than planned. I would definitely use 495 movers again and recommend them highly! read more

Recently moved from DC to NYC. Tom was amazing and matched a lower quote so that I could go with 495 movers per my job's relocation policy.
