Being that I love the whole idea about 1960s (or is it 1950s) diners, I made my way to dine here within a few days of becoming aware of it. The decor is cute and kitschy, just like Al's on Happy Days. The music on the juke box, the booths, decor and even the waitresses uniforms all worked in concert making me feel I took a trip back in time. I ordered pancakes with blueberry compote, sausage and eggs. Everything was cooked well, but the pancakes lacked flavor. The blueberry compote was clumped ontop of the stack, and ran off the plate as I attempted to eat. The restaurant was so cold that the butter hardly melted. After a few bites, the pancakes were too cold to enjoy if I wanted to finish them. I was also put off by the a la carte pricing. Wife ordered the chicken fried steak...loved it. I never eat that kind of thing but she made me taste a bite and I enjoyed it. Perfectly seasoned gravy and a huge portion. Side of veggies were in a garlic butter and they actually seasoned them with salt & pepper. THANK YOU. I love tuna melts and this one was superb, stuffed into toasted rye bread and served with a massive amount of perfectly salted and crisp fries. It is sad to know what a place was and then to see what it has become. We had a very mediocre lunch and service, and I am being generous. As with so many things post pandemic, 5 & Diner has suffered. Service was ok. My husband's Philly Cheese Steak tasted like the meat had freezer burn. There was melted cheese at the bottom of the bun, not in the steak mix. My hamburger was rare to raw, though I ordered medium rare. The waitress insinuated twice that it was my mistake, because their medium rare is "very, very rare". We won't break their bank, but we won't be going back again. I don't think I am wrong in expecting to get what I ordered for a $15 hamburger. Water was never checked, apologies for any inconvenience never extended, and no follow up on our satisfaction or if we needed anything else. While there I saw 3 people having to come to the front to request their check. Decided to let it go and just see what we could get done in the restaurant. Walking up was another sad atmospheric revelation where there are pool noodles wrapped haphazardly around guard rails. not even new pool noodles old pool noodles, discolored cracked and damaged. Opening the door I immediately saw cracks in the floor and tile showing the base construction. Inside was not much better. Screaming barefoot children ran up and down the length of the restaurant. An older gentleman who placed this order was told that they were out of mushrooms. The waitress legitimately asked him "is that not good enough for you?". Luckily I knew my table was clean mostly because it was still sopping wet and I had to dry it off with napkins. This is a place I used to enjoy coming to eat for under $20 for two, for the same basic meal! On our most recent visit to town, we were staying at a resort that offered a $30 dollar breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, hash browns and coffee), so we were pleased to note that 5 & diner was virtually around the corner. Even though the restaurant has been here for many years, they keep it looking fresh, with a 50s decor. The service was delightful and the food was delicious and plentiful. Also ordered the open face Chili Size burger and the Steak Bomblette. The pot pie was absolutely wonderful, filled with potatoes, peas, celery and chicken. Very creamy and a crusty crispy dough on top, important for me is it's not salty. The Chili Size was decked with mountain of chili and beans. Toasted buns and beef patties cooked to your doness. I love bringing my kids here but now I'm wondering if I can even take them there anymore since I was chewing on my French toast and bit into a staple. After feeling that electric jolt biting into a piece of metal with fillings in your molars, I spit out the bread and there was the staple. The food is great and never had any complaints, the service is pretty great too; however the manager on staff right now (June 16, 19) didn't want to take responsibility for the staple in my food. She kept blaming the bread company and the Uber eats delivery person (it was IN the bread so it's impossible for the courier to do it anyway) and then tried to say I made it all up and then hung up. So I'm disappointed because if I wasn't the kind of person who chewed their food, I'd be making an ER visit after swallowing a staple right now. I got the BYO skillet with mushrooms, onion, and turkey sausage, and it a little underseasoned, but that's why there's salt and pepper on the side! Their onion rings are breaded and deeeelicious. Good service, good food, DELICIOUS malts! The 16th st. restaurant is my favorite location. If you do not like or do not care for meat, you can substitute a black bean patty for any burger, which I opted for, SO GOOD... Way better than expected. Yum . I'm from a group of highschool students who frequently visit 5 & Diner after theater productions ( group of 20+) typically around 11 pm. Tammy has been our server every single time (4+)and she has always been a fantastic waitress. Not only does she have the patience and abilities to successfully host a group of rowdy, tired, and hungry teenagers, but she also always brings a positive and efficient attitude towards us. We came in at 10:30 and were all paid and finished by 11:30. We all sincerely appreciate her and her positivity, it always makes our night. Came in while I was waiting for my car across the street. This place is kind of dark, which is weird given the jukeboxes and neon. It feels like a run down diner. The waitress I had was Morgan, she was nice and attentive - the service was no issue. The food was subpar, I got a BLT club which was sandwiched between three slices of lettuce. There was very little bacon and an overload of bad lettuce. I only ate half of it because it was so disappointing. I don't know why I expected much else, but this place was not good. read more

He kept on offering things to us, and checking in on us. He would ask us,"Do you need more water?", "Is there anything else I can get you?", and "How is the food?". Our food came quick and was enjoyable and filling. We got a variety a things, including the short stack of pancakes. If you wanted whipped cream, which is free of charge, you get a whole bowl of it! Very disappointed in both the service here and the attention to detail with their food. When I think of a locally owned diner, I assume a welcoming vibe and a caring attitude when it comes to customer service. This place lacks both. Seriously appalled by the way they believe they can speak to customers here. It's NOT OK. Also, last time I checked, an omelette ones standard with cheese. Both of our omelettes were served without cheese inside. We also did not receive the side items we paid for. So many things get overlooked here, makes you wonder what else they are overlooking. NO THANK YOU. Regardless, it was a terrible experience. We want to support local small businesses through this pandemic, but this lazy "I don't care" attitude is a huge turn off. Spike was nice.., our waitress not nice at all. ... bad attitude, made us very uncomfortable by being so irritated serving us. Ruined our dinner to be honest.
