Hi! I came in on February 13th at around 8pm to do a school project at this diner. I found it very enjoyable as the waiters and staff were very welcoming and friendly. I had the sour dough French toast with a banana milkshake on the side. I got my food in roughly 10 minutes which comes with no complain as it all came out warm and ready to eat! Whoever made this country gravy knows what they're doing. There is only one other place that serves a large portion of Chicken Fried Steak and that place is called Black Bear Diner. What I love about this particular place is their chicken fried steak. Breading is crispy and meat is tender just the way I like it. The atmosphere is neat and a true diner experience. I wanted lunch so I had a plain ole cheeseburger which was 1/2 lb and juiced and cooked medium which I requested. The fries are good but there could have been more seasoning added. Everything came out hot. My bf had hungry diner and it was good. The pancakes aren't fluffy but they are still good. Overall i was skeptical since I had read the reviews but it was good. Only thing I didn't like was hearing the employees bitch about each other but our server Cindy was nice. Love the old diner look and feel, open 24h. The cheeseburger was exactly what I wanted so good. The put some seasoning in the fries which I love. I'm not sure why, but my experience at 5&Diner was excellent several times in the same week! I'm local, and had visited years ago - but for some reason had not gone back for breakfast. My recent experience was GREAT! Delicious fresh bacon, eggs, good coffee (Ok it's diner!) and the old time '50s is just a great breath of fresh air from all the other breakfast places that are swamped, over priced, and to be honest are not at all any better. (Can you spell avocado toast?) My compliments to the 2 waitresses and the waiter that served me several occasions. Courteous, funny, and very obliging without having to ask! May 17, 2025 - 5220 N 16th St, Phoenix, AZ 85016 I took my family here after shopping, for a fun lunch. We entered the restaurant and stood waiting to be greeted/ sat just like any other typical restaurant. After 10 MINUTES of standing there, with zero acknowledgement from the 3 people I could see working the front of house, I went up to the counter. Again, I stood there for several minutes with employees rushing by and no word. Eventually, Spike came to the counter and asked if I had been helped. I told him that I had not, but wanted to know the wait on a table. His response, "oh there are 5 of you" , which I of course responded yes- because there were 5 of us. To which then he responded with, he wasn't sure. "All of the tables I have available are for 4 people... and that table there (pointing), with those 2, that seats 5 but they like to have dessert" I in return asked him why he didn't come and speak to me 15 minutes ago if they didn't have availability for/ couldn't accommodate a party of 5. His response to me, verbatim, "why would I come over there and talk to you?" My response "because you work here?" In turn, he became defensive and the conversation turned very heated. He told us to leave & I told him where he could shove it. Bottom line, this was hands down the worst restaurant experience I have had in my entire life. I had no problem waiting, but to stand there with no engagement from ANYONE that worked there is absolutely unacceptable. As a business, you should greet your customers. It shouldn't be my responsibility to greet & seat myself. On top of that, I should not be told by a representative of this restaurant that it isn't their responsibility to confirm party size by greeting them. If I could give zero stars I would. 5 & Diner is one of those comfort food places I tend to go to when in need of something that can stick to your ribs! Tammy was very attentive and friendly! I was having a bit of a down day, and she managed to turn that around! Now, my partner and I have been indulging The Wolfe Pit's reviews on frozen Country Fried Steak dinners. Well, I thought I would do this one better and actually try the real thing! I'm not a connoisseur of Country Fried Steak, but you don't need to be one when this was one of my first real experiences with the actual dish. I will say, from the onset, my meal came out hot and ready in a short amount of time, about 15-20 minutes, but it was fairly fast since it was just the beginning of dinner service. Now, my partner is Southern, born and raised, and had indicated that the meal looked like it was supposed to, especially with the amount of gravy present on the steak. The breading was crisp and crunchy, and the gravy was very rich and savory! I added a lot of pepper to mine because I really like pepper anyway, but the gravy itself was very good! The mashed potatoes were on point and paired well with this dish! The veggies of the day were pretty good, fair, but the star was the King Kong Country Fried Steak! Well worth the price, filling and when I say it's filling, it really is stick to your ribs filling! Take it to go if you fill up quickly, but the bang is worth your buck! So, if you have a chance, come down here with the efficient and friendly service and staff, equipped with a pretty excellent sense of humor. Just make sure to ask for Tammy and get yourself a milkshake while enjoying the classic diner atmosphere! Down to earth and festive, you won't regret it! First time eating at this diner. Upon walking in I really liked the ambiance and the retro atmosphere. Would have loved to have eaten our late lunch outside but it was 98 degrees. A/C inside was working great. We were quickly greeted and seated by a lovely hostess who was also our server. Very nice and friendly. Like some other people who have given reviews for here, I was a little disappointed that the table jukebox was not working, or just turned off, or simply didn't work at all because they are decorative only. No big deal. Other retro music was being played over the loud speaker throughout the diner which was fine. On to the food. My wife ordered the turkey club which she absolutely loved. Plenty of turkey and fresh ingredients. The fries were very tasty too. I decided to order what is advertised as one of their signature dishes, the meatloaf. I was excited because I absolutely love a good meatloaf paired with mashed potatoes and gravy and sautéed vegetables. Nothing here could have been further from what anyone would expect from a good meatloaf. On the contrary. It was the worst meatloaf I've ever had, ever. Dry, overcooked, the sauce was burnt onto it, probably from overheating it in the salamander or whatever oven they use. All being hid by a tasteless gravy. I'll be honest, I don't have the stones to send food back. I just suffered in silence, sipping lots of sweetened coffee to get it down. I'm really glad it was me who ordered this and not the wife or there would have been a scene potentially. I'm sure they have other good food to serve here, but the meatloaf today was horrible. We stopped in for lunch today as we were looking for a retro vibe and outdoor seating. This place has both. Service was friendly and fairly quick. Our waitress was super nice took the time to chat a little bit. We sat outside, good distance from others as it was early and not too many people around. Hubs had the patty melt and said it was 'just like when he was a kid' and I had a simple Turkey sandwich and veggie soup. VERY fresh veggies, including cauliflower, broccoli, you name it, was in the soup. I did have to add a little salt and pepper, but otherwise; very good We would never eat inside at a place like this during Covid- super small and cramped in there, as well as they were not enforcing mask wearing. What a great find! It is the perfect picture of an old fashioned diner with the red booths and juke boxes at most tables. We patiently waited to be seated while the only waitress was dealing with a difficult patron. She was patient and kind to him while taking his order. We were seated at a big booth and our drink orders were promptly taken. We all ordered ice tea. She came back to us right away and told us she was brewing a fresh batch. She took our order. We were 2 couples and ordered sandwiches to split. When we received our food she had the sandwiches split into separate plates. That made it much easier for us. The sandwiches were great and. Y friend even commented that the French fries were crispy as she had ordered. We ordered a banana split and the apple crumble for dessert. The ice cream was very creamy. A good time was had by all! We stopped by around midnight and we were quickly seated. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The inside was clean and not busy. We ordered our food right away and it didn't take too long for it to come out. I had the bacon cheeseburger and my friend had the turkey blt. The turkey blt is huge and can easily be shared between two people. I did inform the waitress that the burger was going to be shared, and they surprised us by already cutting it in to two and plating it separately. The service was great.
