I had the most delicious burger here last week. I was alone so I sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Five Star burger and it was to die for. Crispy bacon and crumbly blue cheese... just yum! I was also offered the chipotle mayo and wow! It was delicious. It was a huge burger and I took half of it home. I also took a piece of lava cake home with their salted caramel ice cream. It was sooooo good. They had a fun beer on tap called Squirrel Nuts. It's a peanut butter ale and it's bomb. I came here for a friends night out and hadn't been in forever. They didn't used to have a much of a vegetarian/non-four legged critter menu, but that has much improved! I had the garden burger and the frickles. Yum fried pickles, they were amazing and on the happy hour menu! The garden burger was also very tasty. I love to support places that provide vegetarian options, 5 star is now on my list. Happy hour was a great time with drink and snack discounts to spend time with friends. The staff was very pleasant and checked on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. The place is pretty standard diner style in decor, but that's to be expected. My wife and I came here for dinner and were quite significantly let down. The server who sat us barely acknowledged us and neglected to provide us with napkins, which we had to ask for twice before we received any. When we received our food, there were multiple things missing including a sauce we had requested and at least one add-on to one of our burgers. My burger tasted fine, but nothing special. The real kicker was when, a single bite into her burger, my wife discovered a dark, unmistakable, two-inch hair firmly wedged into the meat of the patty. Although our server apologized and comped the price of said burger, our ruined appetites left the rest of our food half eaten. We still had to pay for all of the rest of it despite leaving as soon as the bill was paid, which was $50 before tip for a single burger, fries, cheese curds, and two drinks. Five Star Burgers should be called 2 star burgers. Brought the family for an early dinner and as soon as we walked inside the air smelled musty so we sat outside. It wasn't much better, the atmosphere wasn't too inviting and outdoor furniture was uncomfortable. We got an old timer burger and one of my kiddos got a grilled cheese with "fruit" we were expecting fresh fruit but the plastic container it came in said fruit. The burger was very bland, no taste and the bun tasted like plastic. The sweet potatoes fries were ok. Service was friendly and ok, it was not busy when we arrived but it still took awhile for our food and to get the bill. So it's been a long while since I've been to 5 star and I'm chagrined that I haven't been back sooner. The experience has been the best I've had this year. We were promptly seated and Tammy our waitress was outstanding. I went with my son and daughter and Tammy was a great hostess and very informative, my son and I got the bison burger my daughter had the chimichurri burger . I've always really enjoyed 5 Star Burger, they were one of my go-to take out options during the heaviest parts of lockdown. They did a great job during that period providing amazing burgers and fries. Last night I had dinner on the patio with a friend and honestly it wasn't what I wanted it to be. The service was very friendly and I love their patio but the burger was overcooked and missing a key ingredient. My go-to has been the bacon brie burger but without the tomato marmalade it just isn't the same. It wasn't bad by any means just not the best it could be. I still happily ate it, along with some sweet potato fries that were also overcooked. I really hope last night was just an off night. I always forget the have a great happy hour, definitely need to remember that in the future. They have great cheap mixed drinks and awesome sliders, definitely worth the visit. Neighborhood eatery that was crowded for lunch, but got a table right away. Yes there is patio seating when available. Although the restaurant seemed a tad dark in lighting (maybe because of Halloween, idk...) it was extremely clean, friendly staff and I enjoyed that hormone-free, chemical-free, unfiltered burger. GOOD NEWS: - Alistair our waiter was great fun, really energetically dynamically friendly. And extremely good at staying in touch making sure we were doing fine during our mini snack-a-thon devouring fried green chile strips. Top notch service!! - Breaded green chile strips were fried nice 'n crunchy and were tasty. Not as strong on the chile taste as I'd hoped, but it did come into play enough to register. My dining partner, who is a semi regular here for the strips claimed they were fried darker than usual. Mayo & mustardy dipping sauce was a nice complement to the crunchy strips. - So two stars for a couple of good points. BAD NEWS: - *STANK!!!!!!!!* Walking in the front door, we were clubbed with an overwhelming stench that was a mix of what smelled like industrial chemical floor sanitizer, old frying oil, and other unidentified noxious odors. Hyper strong! We're talking "peel your nose right off your face" or perhaps "this retch test is not a test and we hope you have some killer good laundry soap waiting for your clothes at home because you're going to need it" strength. The temptation to turn heel and flee was real, palpable, and seated right about at the solar plexus. Nonetheless we stayed, munched our fried green chile strips, and had a chat. The fact that my nose eventually grew used to the stink makes me suspect my olfactory facilities don't have my best interests at heart. As others have mentioned, interior runs a bit to the dark side. The burger came out as ordered - add surprised look here! I usually order rare to get med-rare. Well, this was rare. Two lessons here 1. order near the way you want it cook and 2. Some steak places in town need to take note! Needless to say the burger was juicy & delicious. Dressings came on the side so you got as much or little as you wanted. I went to 5 Star Burgers a couple weeks ago with my sister. It is one of my favorite places for happy hour. They run specials on their fries, sliders, beer and wine. The beer at happy hour is $4.50 and wines are $5.00. I had the burger slider and turkey slider which were both delicious. I ordered a side salad which consisted of spring mix, diced tomatoes, cucumber, radishes, sweet onion, sunflower seeds, shredded cheese, and croutons with blue cheese dressing. Their salads are always fresh and delicious. Our server Cerra was awesome! Very attentive and friendly. It's a nice atmosphere, never too noisy and they have a nice patio to sit outside when the weather is warmer. I would definitely recommend 5 Star Burgers. When I say we've been coming here, I mean we visit at least once a month for many many years. With that said, our last experience was so bad, we will very likely not ever be coming back. We ordered our regular! What we crave and come back for. The Lamb burger, Bison burger and their previously delicious burger of the month. Our burgers were rare... I mean cold and bloody. We thought its was an oversight and returned them to be cooked more. We got them back and again... rare! Just seared on the edge we cut into. Weird. So we asked again... if they could please get our bugers to the temp we requested, Medium-Well and asked for a managers over site. The manager came and was incredibly rude and accused us of not ordering our meal correctly. He approached our table from behind the bar as if he was going to fight with us. When I attempted to deescalate... He was extremely argumentative then decided to make an excuse that the Bison has a "special" temp that can't be modified. We were all seriously in shock with his behavior! We were being so kind and patient. Then when we told him only one burger was Bison, he became more angry when he was corrected. Our burgers were returned a third time... When they came back, they were burnt! I mean black and hockey pucks! They burnt our burgers out of spite! Our waitress was very apologetic and said, "The cook in the back is a rookie." She didn't have an excuse for the "manager". I had the build-your-own burger option with Gorgonzola cheese and sautéed mushrooms. The build-your-own burgers do not come with sauces or have suggested sauces to add; they come dry. I've been coming to 5 Star Burgers for the last 10 years. Hands down one of the best burgers in Albuquerque. The service is always consistent. I've never had a bad experience with the staff. The restaurant is clean and has a sports bar type feel with a nice bar area to watch the game. Prices are fair and inexpensive. I dropped by during a busy Friday night and service was excellent. I ordered a Green Chile cheeseburger of course and it was cooked to my preference. The green Chile had good flavor and heat. I love their French fries. When you walk in it is very dark inside. There are a lot of people i side and not much for distance. I think they maybe make an effort to distance bit with so many customers it is easier to seat everyone Ordered the frickles aka fried pickles. Over cooked and greasy!! Not good I hope this was a one off. So I ordered the lemonade and got a refill then next was refill was a no. Waitress said if she gives me a refill she will charge me another lemonade, another negative, and for the price of the lemonade. I know why it is so dark inside. The cooking. Brought out fired pickles, frickes, and they looked like they were fried in old oil. They were dark, over cooked. Burger is as good. I must say it is one of the better burgers. Waitress said fries feed 3 to 4, nope!! I was expecting a large fries, no, not large and for the price. It is not worth it, nix the large fries. Wildly unethical... and an extremely rude manager/bartender. Placed a to go order and the bartender charged 20% for a "service fee" (gratuity). We asked him, he rudely averted the question and went to another ticket. When questioned again... he shortly snapped back that it was for orders over 100 dollars. I asked if that's normal for to go... and he ignored yet again. When picking up, we asked to speak to the manager- he stated he was the manager- so I told him I thought it was pretty unethical to force customers to pay 20% for "service" when no service was given. He shrugged and laughed. Went back to business. Won't be back... and we had been regulars for YEARS. Update: Owner's response misrepresented my original review- I never said "unfair". I said unethical. I would happily and always have tipped more than "fair"... mandatory, however, is unethical. I firmly stand by this... as I read through more of her responses to other unhappy customers... and realize now - the owner is as rude and short as the managers she employs. Continuing the update- our food was wildly subpar. Which brings to question the "service" on even their to go orders. For clarification... we live less than a 2 minute walk away. Therefore- the food being of poor quality had nothing to do with the time it took to get it home and served. I would question whether the "help" was particularly unprofessional with our order due to my questioning the mandatory gratuity charge. After the owners responses - I wouldn't put it past them. Fish and chips - again luke warm both the fish and fries. Served but forgot the coleslaw and tartar sauce. I asked for them 2x but server didn't bring it. I did send back the green Chile strips before the dinner arrived, I eat them in your place often and know what they should taste like. When server brought the fresh set he said "these for sure are fresh, if you don't like them maybe green chili strips aren't your thing" - RUDE! He was a younger male with dark hair, slight build and thin facial hair. Tammy another server was super friendly with her tables and this server was just a dud. That with food being served after sitting a while was the gist of my poor experience. About 7 years ago, this place was definitely 5 stars with service, food and atmosphere. But today is another matter. Service was good but not great. We arrived and it took a while to get a server. The greeter was ok. I had to get the attention of another server and she was not happy that I asked her over to the table. She was visibly upset with me and our server. The food was pretty good. I had the special, Christmas Burger with an extra egg. It has a good taste but the meat was not even close to occupying the whole brioche bun. I made a remark and it took 2 servers and a manger to decide on what to do. They took a whole $1.50 of a $45 ticket. Wow, I had to argue with the manager to get the discount off the burger. He finally took the whole burger off the ticket. But I think that was just to get out of his hair. He was defensive. But maybe he just had a bad day. The ambience was once modern and artsy. It's now filled with aging plain tables and chairs, limited bar drink choices, old flat screen TVs, and beat up restrooms that need new fixtures and a fresh coat of paint. It's been a while. I'll be back to try my ole haunt again someday but not until more yelpers say there's been changes for the better. At least ask us if we'd like another beer after our glasses have been empty for 10 minutes. I miss the old crew. They'd never let your thirst get a foothold. Sometimes I write reviews to remind me why I don't go back someplace. It's easier for me to remember. With 5 Star, I get the idea management is absentee or just lost interest. Ordered the "Unburger", once again you can tell no decision maker has ordered and ate this item. The bun was hours away from being stale, and covered the taste of the burger. Made everything so dry. I like tomatos that haven't been in the refrigerator. The refrigerator just ruins the flavor (pro tip), and we've got enough problems with tomatos in Albuquerque. I like red onion for eating raw. The white onion missed the mark. Not sure what the watery sauces I received with my burger where, but it wasn't anything I could identify and didn't have a great taste. Another way you can see management isn't around, was the tattooed up bartender who took my order was way more interested in his cell phone then the customer in front of him. In fact, while I was waiting, he spent 90% of the time, looking at that damn phone. The young busboy had no one to direct him or train him on "how to behave in the dinning room", don't touch your hair, don't touch the back of the banquet, don't spend 10 minutes clearing a single table, wear your mask properly, make eye contact. Shame, because I truly believe restaurant work is an awesome first job and great training for the future. Of this strip mall, only the UPS Store hits the mark. This is a haven for Keto and non Keto folks alike! My husband adored the $1 ice cream cones with the choice of vanilla, chocolate, or salted caramel ice cream! The green chile mayo is a must no matter what you order. I went with the turkey burger cobb salad and substituted grilled chicken for the turkey patties and held the croutons for the perfect Keto meal! I don't leave reviews often but had to after the horrendous service today. I've been coming to this location on Academy since they opened and have been back often as I support local business. Even during Covid I made the point of placing many orders of takeout to make sure we did our part in supporting during difficult times. Service and food had always been great, except today. Sad! I asked about portion size of something I always order because same size but more than double the price. And server told me with an attitude of being bothered "if this is only about price" and turned and walked away. What!!! No care at all. Then went back to the bar tender and a VERY loud volume to make sure we heard her complaint and went on for about 10 minutes complaining that I asked about size/price. It was only a question and not personal to her, she took it that way. So to say the least we left knowing we would never return. And we live in neighborhood and have bought several gift cards as gifts. Never again!! Lesson learned. One server ruined it by her unprofessionalism. read more
