Time for an update since my last review was approximately forever ago. The fact that 54 Mint is still around says a lot about its staying power in the tough SF restaurant market. Dining has changed since they first arrived on the scene, but Roman classics like cacio e pepe, suppli, panzanella, and amatriciana with guanciale, plus friendly service are still a draw. Our Italian waiter knew the menu and made good suggestions. We stopped in before a show at the Warfield and it remains a solid choice for pasta and a pre show (or pre Cirque) dinner. read more

I came here with a couple of my friends and we had a great experience. I really like the server for our table a lot he was really sweet and gave really good recommendations. I really enjoyed the gnocchi a lot, and the tiramisu was a good ending to our meal. The carbonara was a little heavy, but the bacon bits were so good. Always loved 54 Mint. Came with friends and decided to share a couple of huge specials with friends. The food was amazing!! For appetizers, we had: The Vignarola salad delicious!! The combination of pea shoots, artichoke, and fava beans was an interesting twist on green salads. I just loved it! Pescetti Fritti was addicting! These little fried smelt dipped in their caper aioli was the best!! I could eat this and the salad alone. For dinner, we had: Bisteccone (30oz ribeye) - flavorful and tender. This is definitely a huge dish to share! There were 4 of us but we couldn't finish it. The potatoes were on the crisp side. The broccolini was a little overdone. The Roman Holy Trinity of Pasta came with 3 bowls - Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe and Amatriciana. Another entree meant for sharing. Each bowl was one serving. Cacio e Pepe and the Carbonara were both good but I found it too creamy. The Amatriciana was a good third to have. It had a bit of heat to break up the other two creamy pastas. I would love to report on dessert but sadly they didn't have what we wanted. I wish when the waiter handed us the dessert menu, that he would've mentioned that because he was gone for about 15 min and had to wave him down to order dessert. One of the best carbonara pasta Ive had! I believe the pasta is house made and it was cooked al dante! The pasta was creamy and the meat added a nice savory flavor to it. It can be a challenge in trying to narrow down a perfect Italian restaurant in San Francisco. Which takes me to "54 Mint Cucina Romana", a well-known establishment that has been around as far back as 2009. Located directly off of Mission St and tucked in between 5th & 6th St's in the Financial District, this place is centered in the heart of the Mint Plaza as well as the San Francisco Mint where currency was once produced in the late-1800's. Today this area serves as a focal point for gatherings, events, and other life moments. Reservations are strongly encouraged but not required. To keep things safe, I booked a reservation via-OpenTable about a month prior to dining here. When the day arrived, we came right on time as we were seated for our 5:30pm dinner reservation that was set for Friday 2/13/2026. The upstairs includes a long narrow dining area with a full-on granite bar and exposed bricks while the downstairs offers the majority of the seating complete with several dozens of award-winning wines, a communal dining table (for large parties), and a very cozy yet modern twist to Italian dining. Once seated, we were given food and drink menus as well as a carafe of iced water and two wine glasses. As for our drinks, I go with a refreshing "Peroni" (Lombardia) lager while my lady opts for the "Dolce Alba" mocktail; this includes white peaches, agave, and ginger ale. We then start off with their "Pane E Olio"; this consists of soy-rice-wheat bread, focaccia and grissini. It also includes a serving of extra virgin olive oil. As for our main entrées, I went with the "Coda Alla Vaccinara" This consists of braised oxtails, tomatoes, carrots, celery, and pine nuts. My lady went with their "Bucatini All' Amatriciana" which offers long hollow pasta, San Marzano tomatoes, Guanciale, and Pecorino Romano cheese. The drinks arrived first and were beautifully presented in upscale glasses. My Peroni was cold and crisp while her mocktail hit the spot without the alcohol. Our bread variety with EVOO also tasted delicious as that feeling of starving quickly dissipated. Now onto our meals! My oxtail was impeccably irresistible as they did not skimp on the amount of meat that was served. Her pasta was also cooked to perfection while the thicker texture of the noodles gave this a nice hearty entrée. Overall, we were both impressed as the service from our waiter, food quality, and wait time exceeded our expectations. All in all, "54 Mint" is an excellent Italian restaurant in San Francisco that I highly recommend. Even though it does not have that nostalgic old-school charm of other Italian eateries in the city, this place is cozy, and intimate yet modern and chic all under one roof. Come by for lunch which is open weekdays from 11:30am-2:00pm or dinner which is open daily from 5-9pm with slightly longer hours (until 9:30pm) on Friday/Saturday. Found this spot out on a whim and so glad we tried it tonight. Amazing food and friendly staff. We felt so welcomed and the patio area was popping with the beautiful weather today. We ordered a few dishes to share. SOLERO mocktail. 4/5 Refreshing but tart! SUPPLi Al TELEFONO 5/5 amazing dish to start off with! Fresh and hot and had that cheese pull. Tomato risotto with delicious mozzarella inside. Not greasy at all! CiCORIE 5/5 Beautiful presentation salad and light for warm weather. Lightly dressed but we did say no gorgonzola. GNOCCHi Al RAGÙ 5/5 This dish was smacking. Little gnocchi pillows that were soft and fluffy in an amazing tender beef ragu! This is a must! As described, cute lil place tucked back off of any main street. Walked from our hotel so not sure what parking is like but it wasn't obvious. Pleasant service. Limited menu, but with some variation. Extensive wine list but is all Italian and the majority on the very pricey end. Don't know enough about their wines and my one fall back, they were out of. Pasta is home made and fresh. My family spent two weeks together in the Philippines, enjoying breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So, we decided to do something different for Thanksgiving. Instead of stressing ourselves out as many people do on that holiday, my partner and I chose to go to a restaurant so that we could avoid cooking and cleaning that night. I found a restaurant on OpenTable that offered an affordable Thanksgiving prix fixe meal for the four of us. There were only a few time slots left, so I reserved the latest one at 8:00 PM. I wish I had chosen the 4 o'clock time slot because we had to wait an hour to be seated. We were finally seated at around 9:00 PM. Then we discovered they had run out of the pre-fixe Thanksgiving meal. How is it possible to run out when everyone had to make reservations? Did they miscalculate the count? Did they accept walk-ins who ordered the pre-fixe meal, leading to an inaccurate count? What on earth happened? I reminded myself to be grateful for getting a table and to appreciate the fact that I was safe, despite having to drive and walk through the rough streets to get here. I noticed a guy twirling a crowbar on the street, which made us want to park in a garage. There were also some creepy homeless individuals wandering around. Unfortunately, I couldn't walk fast enough in my heels, so we would have had to run from the car to the restaurant, which was pretty scary AF. Anyway, back to this restaurant that had an overall rating of 4 stars. The Margarita was excellent, and it calmed my mood. My man enjoyed his Negroni, too. We had different red wines with dinner, and although I don't remember the names, we liked them. The server was nice enough to let me have a tasting pour of the two that I was indecisive about. Overall, the food was delicious. The octopus was a fantastic starter, setting the stage for what was to follow. The Vegetarian Lasagna and Rigatoni were both flavorful and fulfilling. My daughter had wanted mashed potatoes, but since they were no longer available, we opted for the fried potatoes instead. To my surprise, they turned out to be quite tasty. However, the flourless chocolate cake didn't quite live up to the standard set by the other dessert we tried. This is a very nice, high end restaurant that feels like a magical hole in the wall in the middle of the tenderloin. We came here before a show at The Warfield for a quick bite. We ordered two of their mocktails, which were perfect and not too sweet. We enjoyed the burrata toast and broccolini as our appetizers, then shared the gnocchi ragu for our main entree. The serving was large enough to comfortably share between the two of us, and it was absolutely delicious!!! The best gnocchi I have ever had, hands down! It tasted like home, total comfort food. Bucatini Pasta - this definitely had potential to be better. The only con about this was the red sauce was a too salty. I'm not sure what kind of meat was in it, but it was probably like bacon or pork belly, which was pretty good. Good proportion of tomato sauce and meat. Pasta was cooked very well, al dente style. If only they put less salt, it would've been perfect or perhaps added some spiciness to it. I will say the ingredients tasted fresh though, and it did not have a heavy greasy feel to it afterwards. Cacio e Pepe - this was amazing, a very good pasta dish! It wasn't too rich or greasy, it had the perfect amount of cheese. It was not heavy at all, and it did not feel overwhelming like some cheese pasta dishes can be. I shared it with my friend, but I definitely could've eaten my own dish myself. Pasta was cooked to perfection, al dente. This is a winner, and I would definitely get it again! Oddly enough, this cheesy pasta was light in a good way. Delicious! Highly recommended! Tiramisu - while this was good and the proportion of ingredients was perfect, I will say there were some odd chunks in there. It was almost like cottage cheese pieces in there, but I'm sure it was the mascarpone cheese. But it just added a weird texture for me and I would've preferred it without that. I've been to this restaurant a few times since the location is super convenient. Overall, the food and ambiance are solid, but the service has been pretty hit or miss. On our most recent visit, we were seated downstairs at a communal table, which I didn't love. The group next to us was celebrating a birthday and was very loud, and because of how close we were, it was hard to hear each other the entire meal. Our main server was kind and attentive, but there was a mix-up with our entrees. We were a party of three and all ordered pastas. Someone else dropped them off quickly without saying anything, and it wasn't until we had already started eating that we realized we'd all been given the wrong dishes. Because this was a more formal, professional dinner, none of us felt comfortable flagging it at that point or switching plates after we'd already started eating. 54 Mint is arguably the only authentic Roman Italian restaurant we have in San Francisco. The owners and chefs are from Rome, and the ingredients, recipes, in-service are all authentic Roman. We are so lucky to have this restaurant, let alone for it to deliver on DoorDash. I've tried a lot here, but my two favorites are the gnocchi Bolognese, and the Cacio E Pepe. You also simply can't go wrong with the tiramisu. The wait staff is exceptional- 10 minutes after ordering I realized that my dish had guanciale in it (unsafe for pregnancy) and I am newly pregnant. Been here twice now and enjoy this place. Nice neighborhood gem in an alley. Two floors - a top floor with a bar and some seating, patio seating and a downstairs. I like the privacy and intimacy of the downstairs seating area. They have a great selection of wines from Europe. I got the Etna Rosso wine from Sicila- which is solid and one-dimensional, however great if you don't fancy anything bold or strong. Pasta was fantastic. For antipasti, we started with the Polpo e Patate- the octopus was great, cooked well and soft. For paste, I was told the chef's favorite is the Tonnarelli Cacio E Pepe, which was great and best eaten hot. For secondi, we got a seasonal scallop pasta - the scallop was soft and tender, and the tomato and pasta favors blended to perfection. Boyfriend and I went for Valentine's Day, and the ambiance was perfect. The entrees are phenomenal, so well made and flavorful! Our appetizer came out a bit late and almost cold but they quickly fixed that and gave us complimentary tiramisu. There was plenty of bar seating available and the restaurant was filled with couples and families. We ordered some burrata to start and I got the Bucatini, which was super delicious. The burrata was creamy and a perfect appetizer. The inside of this restaurant is very nice and well-lit, however, it is off an alley that is often littered with trash, so be careful when walking there. read more

We had the most wonderful time here last night. I'll admit, I was a little nervous going in because I had read some reviews mentioning slow or inattentive service. That was absolutely not our experience. Our server was fantastic, warm, attentive, and perfectly paced throughout the evening. The busboy was equally impressive, constantly clearing and resetting the table without ever interrupting conversation. At one point my scarf slipped onto the floor and he quietly picked it up and folded it for me, which honestly just captured the level of care we felt all night. Truly some of the best waitstaff we've encountered. Inside, the space is cozy and charming. It genuinely felt like we'd been transported into a small trattoria in Italy. This place was amazing! We walked in on a Friday night without reservations, looking for a quick dessert. The hostess was very accommodating and sat us at the bar near the bartender Jose, who was very charming and welcoming. We were celebrating two birthdays and my friend was craving tiramisu. I found this place on yelp and the reviews of their tiramisu seemed off the charts! We just had to try it! I had never had it served this way before, in a round cup. The first bite I took was so creamy that I was satisfied from that one bite. I let my friend finish the rest, and she did not hesitate! I felt like Joey from Friends in the episode where he doesn't like to share food, and couldn't control himself when he ate all of his date's chocolate torte lol "uh oh" Inside was nothing like I had seen before, where parts of the restaurant were downstairs, I guess with the way Mint Plaza is set up. Went last night with five friends. Was seated for 20 minutes before we even saw a waiter, and this was because we went to look for him. We put in our food and drink orders at once to move things along faster. Our food arrived- drinks had not. Their cocktails take painfully long to arrive. The Brussels sprouts were tasty but my pasta was way too salty, I had to down water the rest of the night. Waiter never came back to check on us (we had to keep asking other staff for additional orders) and when we questioned the slow drinks, he just shrugged. Now I understand why- when the check came, an automatic 20% gratuity was added. Our waiter had zero incentive to tend to us. This was the same experience we had last time we came (also a group). I would NOT recommend this place for groups. My suggestion for management would be to add 15% mandatory tip for groups then let the group decide if the service deserves 20%. Upon arriving, I got a warm greeting from the staff. Our waitress was nice and attentive. I had the carbonara. It was full of flavor and a good sized. I left full after the meal. The only issue is the parking situation. The restaurant is located near a less favorable part of town. I parked at yerba buena garage. First, two items on the menu (butternut squash and brussel sprouts) were not available and instead subbed with mediocre dishes such as cheese and tomatoes and a very sour arugula salad(?) (An Italian dinner and NO bread served...?) Second, the entrees took about 45-50 mins to come out after the antipasti was served. All the items were lukewarm at best, especially the lasagna. (Which was 'vegetarian' and very, very dry.) The best item was the turkey, which we were served a small portion for two. The short rib wasn't too bad either. I never even knew an Italian spot like this existed, but I'm so glad that I came here for dinner. It's giving cute wine bar vibes for an Italian spot. I got the BUCATINI ALL' AMATRICIANA and it was good! Nice portion too. For dessert I got the tiramisu and it was delicious. I ate the whole thing up. The porchetta was dry though. Overall, I would definitely recommend the spot again and it's good for groups and they don't rush you when you're dining here. I would definitely try their other pastas next time too! read more
