Went to 801 Local for a date night, and it was a bit of a mixed experience. The line to get seated was backed up out the door because the hostess appeared unsure of where to seat everyone. Thankfully, another hostess seated us promptly since we had a reservation. The decor gave off a bit of a cruise ship vibe, which was interesting. The dining area was very noisy and felt cramped, but somehow, we still couldn't hear the conversations at the table next to us, which was a plus. Our waitress was fun and full of energy, which brightened the experience. She recommended the Lindbergh spritz, which was delicious with its floral notes. This one arrived without any tinge of pink you might expect, almost looked brownish in the dim light but taste is what matters and it was the worst cosmo I've ever had, very bitter not sure what that was from. Moving to dinner I opted for a traditional half pan roasted chicken with whipped potatoes. The tiniest bird arrived a Cornish hen no doubt trimmed into two pieces a drum stick measuring no more than 4 inches, no thigh or wing and a tiny breast so not a true 1/2 chicken by any means, maybe 10 bites of actual meat and my dream of a take home lunch now gone. Absolutely no seasoning at all, none whatsoever to be detected. The whipped mashed potato were plated proportionately and were gummy and over worked-not a fluffy whipped potato that I was hoping for. The saving grace were the perfectly cooked vegetables hidden under the chicken which were not abundant but much appreciated. The restaurant is located near the same complex that houses Lifetime Fitness and is conveniently tucked away from that facility's hustle and bustle. This restaurant goes a long way to filling the void left behind when Cardwell's closed and is a perfect place to slake one's thirst and get fortified after doing some retail damage at Plaza Frontenac. Coming at the earlier end of happy hour, it was easy to be seated in booth near the bar area. Towards the end of the visit, the bar had filled up considerably, and was practically standing room only. It looks like the restaurant/bar draws in a mix of patrons, from nearby office workers to regulars looking to socialize at the bar, and even families coming for dinner. The quality of the drinks (perfect martini!) and food is excellent. The sliders and tuna tacos were standouts--definitely do not sleep on the parker house rolls with fresh butter. Today I took a friend to 801 Local for dinner at 6:15PM. We were immediately seated upon arrival. It has a nice decor and the service is prompt and polite. We each ordered wine and my Chardonnay and her Sauvignon Blanc were good. We ordered the Parker House rolls as an appetizer. I also ordered a Caprese style tomato salad. Both of these arrived at our table within 15 minutes, the rolls arriving first. The Parker House rolls were hot and delicious! An herbed butter came with them, it was excellent. For entrees she ordered the Salmon and I ordered the scallops. We shared a side of asparagus. The salmon was delicious I was told. The scallops were served on a risotto flavored with truffle and cooked with mushrooms. It was delicious. The scallops were smallish and there were only 3 on the plate. They did have good flavor. Overall the restaurant is nice but noisy. It's not a place for a romantic dinner. For a business meal it is fine. The tab was $166 for us before the tip was added. Excellent food here, though you do pay a premium! We got the tuna lettuce wraps and the atomic shrimp cocktail as appetizers. Both were around $14-16 each, but I definitely recommend the wraps since they were delicious and so light! The atomic shrimp were great too, just pretty spiced due to the horseradish in the cocktail sauce. For the main course, we got the shrimp pasta linguini and the local burger, which were about $29 and $19, respectively. The pasta was extremely rich and had a healthy serving of shrimp, as well as a side of crispy bread. The burger was juicy and flavorful due to the generous amount of bacon/cheese on it. I've visited 801 local many times now, mostly for happy hour and consistently enjoy it. It's busy during the weekends, and on pretty evenings the patio gets packed. The space is very warm and inviting with beautiful woods throughout. The bar is enticing with all the rich wood. It's almost impossible to find a spot at the bar in early evening after work and you definitely need a reservation for a table in dining room. The happy hour offers great options, and the food is always high quality, cooked well and flavorful. On this visit, we had a different experience and ordered from main menu. The smashed burger was the least favorite thing I've had here. Patties were overcooked and the sauce reminded me of a BigMac (which I personally don't care for). The fries weren't well cooked either. The crap dip was very citrusy, creamy, not the chunky meaty kind I prefer. However I really enjoyed this and would get again. It was nice and warm and spread easily on the toasted bread. Most of the food was good: calamari appetizer, lobster bisque, salads, filet mignon. I had the prime rib, and it was not good - very tough to cut and chew, no real flavor. My friend who ordered the same entree said his steak was very tough as well. The mashed potatoes that came as a side were good, but the broccolini was bland and also a bit tough. Overall, I was looking forward to a really good steak dinner, and left disappointed. For my main course, I ordered the prime rib and I was not disappointed. It was, of course, too large for me to finish so I took the leftover home. My prime rib was prepared perfectly and was well seasoned. It was also served with garlic whipped potato, broccolini and au jus. My husband had the seared salmon an he was happy with the preparation and the flavor as well. I skipped the dessert as I got too full from the appetizer and my steak, however, the dinner was overall a wonderful experience and the service was fantastic! If there is one thing I would complain about it, it's something that someone else had already said which is that the place has bad acoustic and can be quite loud. As always, let's start with a good news. My wife had a wonderful fillet and our son enjoyed a delicious prime rib. I had the swordfish which was off the menu and it was delightful. I brought my own bottle of wine because I wanted the 2012 Camus anniversary and while 801 has a nice wine selection, it was special occasion and we wanted to celebrate with something top-notch. Secondly, the service was wonderful. I told our server we wanted a nice casual pace for dinner and she allowed us to take our time and enjoy our conversation without feeling rushed. When she was with us, she was completely attentive without being pushy or overbearing. The price point for the meal was what I expected, and it was reasonable. The only downside was the noise. If you're not sitting out on the patio, you're going to feel like you're shouting the entire meal if you're there on a busy night, which we were. Would love to see them try and address their terrible acoustics with the sound company. It might cost them a few bucks, but I think in the long run, it would pay off if they could bring the decibels down a bit. read more
