Filet mignon, seared ahi tuna, chicken saltimbocca

I tried out The Tavern last week with a group of friends and I loved the cozy semi-private rooms they have on the side of the main dining room. Service was excellent and they provided complimentary garlic-y warm bread in a tiny little cast iron pan. I ended up trying the special sampling 3 meat entrees for about $44: filet mignon with crab cake, sesame seared ahi tuna with Thai curry on rice, and chicken saltimbocca on risotto. The chicken saltimbocca was phenomenal on a creamy wild mushroom & asparagus risotto, prosciutto, madeira demi glace, and parmesan fondue. The crab cake was delicious, but the filet mignon was burned on the outside and a little bland. I liked the spicy Thai curry sauce that came with the ahi tuna. The portion sizes are on the slightly smaller side for the price but it's nice that you get to try the different entrees. The half-baked chocolate chip cookie we ordered for dessert was amazing--gooey on the inside, pairing perfectly with a scoop of peanut butter ice cream.

Wow. We were given a gift card by some friends for here and came for "date night". It did not disappoint. Did not have a reservation but was able to get a table anyway. Nicely decorated and a well stocked whiskey/bourbon selection! We tried to get an assortment of dishes and enjoyed everything! The crab appetizer was an interesting blend of tastes and textures and the edamame is a great one also! Our server (Phillip G) was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. He made our first visit comfortable and memorable with his service. Fair warning, this is a nicer place. Keep that in mind for what to wear and what you may expect to spend. My wife lived the Roman Empire drink, as it uses her favorite gin. I'd love the recipe! There's still a little bit on the gift card, so we will have to go again!

The Tavern hits the spot every time. People ask me a lot where they should go in STL and The Tavern is always a high spot on the list. I'm not sure how they do it, but it's elevated without being over the top. It feels special but isn't a once a year special. Bravo. I met a friend here to get drinks and apps! I got an aperol (tends to be my choice here) and we shared a couple different dishes. we shared a ceaser salad, tavern sushi, toasted ravs, and burrata. I think my favorite was the tavern sushi, and the ravs were amazing with the Boursin cheese! Can't wait to come back!

Great ambience and service with food. We ordered the burrata , sushi , sea bass for dinner all spectacular

Sally is a triple threat and I need the world to know. She's an amazing server, welcoming host & makes a killer Cosmo! From start to finish Sally made sure we were well taken care of; making excellent recommendations. I thoroughly enjoyed the tagliatelle; flavorful, filling with a perfect seafood selection. My dining companion raved about the blackened halibut as well. Yes Sally was our designated server however it was very apparent that teamwork is encouraged here. Several employees working the dining room checked in to make sure we were doing ok. That's impressive in 2025 dining. Last but not lease the open kitchen ran like a well oiled machine. I'm counting the days to an encore. Bravo, ~Christy

The Tavern Kitchen and Bar has a very cool vibe. Aaron waited on us and provided superb service and hospitality. We ordered a couple of apps, entrees and a dessert to share. The Manchurian cauliflower app was my favorite! Seafood Tagliatelle was surprisingly light and tasty. We ordered the chicken saltimbocca but unfortunately found it dry and kind of bland. The bread pudding was served in a very hot cast iron skillet, but the bread was actually cold and firm which was disappointing; we enjoyed the ice cream though.

Had a lovely meal here celebrating a special occasion. The service was fantastic. Demi, our server, was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is great. Cool and welcoming. My husband had the tasting plate special. My salmon was cooked perfectly. The rice didn't have much flavor, and the skillet vegetables were half delicious and half a bit oily. I filled up on the salmon though. We will go back again for sure. I love that they had lots of gluten free options. So much love for them for that.

I have had a couple opportunities to visit the tavern again (ok, maybe 5 or 6) and I have to say that it our current, favorite restaurant. Excellent food, changing menu with creative and well executed dishes, great bar program, and solid professional staff. New items I have tried. - French thief cocktail (4.5/5) my new favorite cocktail. Love it. - braised short ribs with butternut squash ravioli (4.5/5): This is a fantastic dish. Tasty sauce, well executed short rib - bone-in short rib, saffron risotto (4.5/5): This holiday special was very tasty. Well executed giant short rib served with decedent and rich risotto - Elk chop (4.25/5): Lean, rich, beautiful chop served with amazing and rich sauce. I swapped out the veggies for some Brussels. - poke appetizer with wontons (4.5/5): Light, fresh, bright sauce, excellent crispy wonton chips. - wagyu burger (4.35/5): fresh ground and thick. I went with medium rare but think medium might have been a bit better for this rich and fatty cut. The fries in this dish are addicting! - Blackened Alaskan Halibut (4.5/5): love this dish. Mild but flavorful blackened seasoning. Rich sauce pairs well with the udon noodles. Oh yeah, we'll be back! Oh yeah, we'll be back.

Oh my goodness! We've wanted to get here for a long time, as our son highly recommended it. It was soo worth the wait. Amazing! The bread they bring is quite delicious. We started with appetizers, the freshest shrimp cocktail and the wagyu potstickers. Then I chose the crispy soy salmon. It was perfect, crisp but so tender inside, with delicious wok cooked veggies. My husband had the tasting board special, with small versions of three entrees. We finished with the donuts. Delish! The vibe is so fun. It's next level cuisine but at the same time feels comfortable like a neighborhood favorite. We can't wait to go back.

    How thoughtful!

We had the best birthday celebration here! Michael took excellent care of us throughout our meal. As a vegan, they were able to accommodate without a problem. Ample parking!

My husband and I have been to this restaurant 3 or more times. We have come by without reservations and they still had a table for us. I love the ambiance, not too light or dark. The waitstaff is super awesome! He knew all the specials by memory. I love the entrees offered as well as the desserts. I had an amazing shrimp pasta, which was a large portion. This was so delicious. I had an order of the kung pao cauliflower. This dish is so amazing, all the spices just explode in your mouth. YOU have to try this dish. I also had the roasted Brussels sprouts with almonds, which were just as delectable. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which was chilled, semisweet and delicious. For dessert I had the half baked chocolate chip cookie which was served in a skillet, yummy good. This is a wonderful venue for parties, family and friends. The entrees are pricey, but if you are looking for a restaurant that makes you feel at home while dining, this place will not disappoint. There does not seem to be a problem with parking.

I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. It has an incredible rich sauce consisting of a mustard beurre blanc. It also comes with lemon and goat cheese au gratin, braised leeks and crispy prosciutto. Recommendation: ask for everything on the side and just add lemon on the fish. The bread they serve consists of biscuits smothered with the right amount of spices to make it delicious. We were stuffed but we wanted something sweet so we tried the half baked chocolate cookie with a scoop of ice cream. It was way too much but it was worth it. This is a fun restaurant with lots of energy. Our server was funny and delivered great service.

This was my third visit, and my group and I left happy as any time I've been! This is a laidback space with beautiful, delicious eats. The service was impeccable, and our waiter had great insight and recommendations for food and our beverages. We opted to share a bottle of the Quilt Red Blend-- highly recommend for a fruity, smooth Red. Not pictured, was the sushi appetizer we all shared--an absolute must! I had the tuna, and the curry was exquisite; go for it if you like some spice.

OpenTable showed a reservation available here, so we finally decided to give it a try--and we're so glad we did. Everything was fantastic. I started with the Green Turtle cocktail, made with Broker's Gin, cucumber, and basil, while my wife enjoyed a glass of Friulano. We opted to share several small plates, which turned out to be the perfect choice. We started with the Brussels sprouts and the goat cheese with bread, both excellent. I also had a cup of the chowder, which may have been my favorite thing of the entire meal. My wife ordered the nightly salad special with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, and balsamic dressing, and it was fresh and delicious. We considered ordering the flatbread as well, but by the time we finished everything else, we were completely stuffed. The service was spot-on from start to finish, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and everything was very reasonably priced. We're already looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

We're not regulars by any stretch of the imagination, but we've been here a number of times over the years. Sometimes it's just my husband and me, sometimes family members join us, and we've brought friends here as well. Nobody has ever not been happy they came here! We had a reservation and were greeted and seated right away. They have a big blackboard where they write the special drinks of the day, so I always have to check that out! They have small plates and entrees there. We almost always do all small plates. The exception is the shrimp and grits because we really like it! This time we did all small plates. The stuffed portabellini mushrooms were a newer menu item and they were SO good! I could have ordered more of those and been fine without anything else! Our next favorite was the oven baked goat cheese. We literally get it every time we come here and it's always delicious. Then we had the Nashville Chicken Sliders. They're good, but nothing super special. Our last item was the short rib street tacos. I'll just say we won't order them again. They weren't bad, but they were lacking in flavor. My cocktail was from the specials list. It was the Bitter Bonfire - made with mezcal - and it was so good! I think my husband had a Manhattan. We will, of course, be back again!

It turns out we've been driving past a Kirkwood treasure all this time. This is "upscale-casual" at its finest--professional and refined, but with a neighborhood heart. Service & Logistics The service here is exceptionally polished. From the friendly hosts to our knowledgeable server, everything ran like clockwork. We even had a visit from a gentleman I presume was the owner (likely Bob, who has been at the helm for decades). He didn't just "check-in"--he saw we needed a few items and personally took care of it. Pro Tips: * Reservations: Don't look for them on OpenTable. They use their own dedicated form on their website, which is simple and efficient. * Wednesday Wine: If you can, visit on a Wednesday. They offer half-priced wine bottles with your meal--a fantastic value for their extensive collection. Cocktails & Drinks The bar program here is excellent, and the bartender was friendly and engaging. * White Negroni (4.5/5): Though they may not have had Suze (the drink wasn't perfectly clear), the bartender absolutely nailed the flavor profile and balance. * Barrel-Finished Manhattan (4.5/5): Their use of an in-house barrel finish makes this classically executed cocktail a real standout--highly recommended for whiskey lovers. * Wine: They have an awesome selection. Definitely ask your server for recommendations! The Food: American Fare with a Global Twist * House Salad (4.5/5): You have to try their house dressing--it's a creamy garlic style that reminds me of the classic Mayfair Hotel dressing. It's incredibly tasty and a true St. Louis staple. * Blackened Grouper (4.5/5): As someone who loves Florida grouper, this hit the mark. Lightly blackened with a fresh mango salsa; vibrant and perfectly executed. * Rainbow Trout (4.25/5): The orange tarragon cream sauce is the star. It was perfectly balanced--enough to enhance the fish and rice without being "soupy." * Pilot House Chicken (4.5/5): A delicious, well-seasoned chicken breast. Savory, juicy, and very well-prepared. * Extras (5/5): They start you with lavash crackers and butter, and the hot, fresh rolls are dangerous. They even finish the night with powdered sugar cookies--a classic Sunset 44 touch. Dessert * S'more Cheesecake & Chocolate Martini (4.5/5): We opted for this beautifully executed, unique dessert. It was yummy on its own, but ordering a Chocolate Martini to accompany it was the perfect move. The Vibe: It definitely skews toward a more mature, quiet crowd. It's the perfect place if you actually want to hear the people you're dining with.

Parking was relatively convenient--street parking is available, and there's a nearby lot about a block away if needed. Upon arrival, the restaurant immediately gives off a refined, upscale atmosphere that feels well-suited for business dining or a special night out. Service was a standout. The dining room manager handled our group and was engaging, attentive, and polished throughout the evening. Service overall was excellent and well-paced. One logistical quirk worth noting: there is only one restroom on the dining room floor, with additional facilities located downstairs, which felt like a slightly odd setup for an otherwise thoughtfully designed space. As for the food, expectations were set extremely high by the enthusiastic and somewhat over-the-top menu descriptions--phrases along the lines of "the most amazing thing you'll ever taste." Unfortunately, while the food was good, it didn't quite live up to that level of hype. The calamari appetizer and Mayfair salad were both solid and enjoyable. The whole branzino was visually impressive, with the head and tail removed tableside, making for a nice presentation. I did encounter a bone, however, and the accompanying white bean side fell short of expectations--the beans weren't as creamy or flavorful as anticipated. Overall, Madrina delivers a very good dining experience, particularly in terms of service and atmosphere. While the food was good to okay rather than exceptional, it was still enjoyable. With a more measured approach to describing the menu, the experience might feel better aligned with what ultimately arrives at the table.
